GO SKATE!
Go Skateboarding Day (GSD) is an annual promotional event organized by the International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASC). It grew from the All Star City Skate Jam held by Kerel “SriKala” Roach and Bryan Chin in 2002 in New York City, and was renamed Go Skate Day in 2004. Go Skateboarding Day was created in 2004 by the International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASC) to help make skateboarding more accessible through events held in major cities around the world. In 2006, more than 350 events took place in 32 countries. The following year, the IASC received Special Congressional Recognition from US Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez for its work in promoting skateboarding and encouraging young people to get outside and practice the sport. Celebrate the inclusion of skateboarding in the Tokyo Olympics! Olympic skateboarding features two disciplines: Street and park. In street competitions, skaters perform a variety of tricks on a course consisting of rails, benches, ramps, stairs and other features you might encounter on a city street. Olympic-style competition consists of two 45-second runs, and five singletrick attempts. The top four of those seven scores are added to determine the final overall score. In park, the course more closely resembles a hollowedout bowl, allowing skaters to ride up the side and perform tricks in mid-air. Skaters have three 45-second runs in which to complete tricks, and only the score from the best run counts. Both disciplines typically feature a variety of tricks, including board flips and grinds, where skaters slide a part of the board on the edge of a bowl or rail. More Information:

America By Rail Texarkana Union Station
T
exarkana Union Station is a historic train station in the Texarkana metropolitan area serving Amtrak, the United States’ national passenger rail system. The Arkansas-Texas border bisects the structure; the eastern part, including the waiting room and ticket office, are in Texarkana, Arkansas, but the western part is in Texarkana, Texas, meaning stopped trains span both states. The station was built in 1928 and was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Texarkana Union Station was constructed and operated by Union Station Trust, a subsidiary organization created as a joint effort between the Missouri-Pacific, Texas & Pacific, Cotton Belt and Kansas City Southern railroads. E. M. Tucker, chief architect for Missouri Pacific, designed the building with a track layout and overhead concourse reminiscent of the style he had used when rebuilding Little Rock Union Depot after a 1921 fire. The present structure replaced an earlier Texarkana station on the same site, and was opened for business on April 17, 1930, with a large celebration and dedication held on May 12, 1930, according to Missouri Pacific Lines Magazine, June 1930. The station and the federal courthouse anchor the south and north ends of State Line Avenue, the dividing line between Arkansas and Texas. In 1876, Congress mandated that the Texarkana railroad station would straddle the state line, and the building has entrances and exits into both states. Missouri Pacific and Texas and Pacific, the two carriers with the most passenger trains serving Texarkana Union Station, were able to operate through the facility without a backup move. Kansas City Southern and Cotton Belt passenger trains both made back-up moves to access the station. Provisions were made in the original station design for a restaurant, but as a result of the Great Depression, the only food service was provided by a snack bar and news stand. The station was listed on the National Register of
Historic Places in 1978. The imposing 44,000 square foot station features Renaissance revival architecture. Three large, arched windows flanked by decorative columns highlight its façade. This station was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Amtrak did not begin serving Texarkana until 1974 when the Inter-American was introduced. It was decided at that time the main waiting room and ticket counter would not be used because of the lack of access into the building for individuals with disabilities, and it was too large for Amtrak’s purpose. Therefore, the baggage end of the building was retrofitted to include a ticket counter and waiting room for Amtrak patrons, which is still used today. Today, Union Station’s main waiting room remains dormant as it has been since the last Missouri Pacific passenger train left in 1971. It is also one of the few privately owned active train stations in the country. It was purchased in 2003 by Jeff Sandefur, who plans to restore life to the station. The west portion of the station has been adaptively reused as a correctional institution. The first settlers in the Texarkana area were the sedentary Caddo Indians, yet the city did not gain its name until Europeans arrived. Texarkana is a portmanteau of the words “Texas” “Arkansas,” and “Louisiana.”. When the land was first surveyed, it seemed that Texarkana would be on the border of all three states. Some credit surveyor Colonel Gus
Knobel of the Iron Mountain Railroad (a predecessor to MoPac) with giving Texarkana its name. In 1876, Texarkana was granted a charter by the Texas Legislature. The city’s slogan, “Twice as Nice,” is fitting for a place with two mayors and two sets of city officials, yet the two sides share a courthouse, federal building, jail, post office, chamber of commerce, and several other offices. The state line bisects the Amtrak platform in Texarkana. At the stop, if you are on the west end of the train, you’re in Texas. If you’re on the east side, you’re in Arkansas. Local lore suggests that Boggy Creek, a swampy area southeast of Texarkana, is home to an anthropoid swamp monster, similar to Bigfoot or Sasquatch. A film dramatizing the stories, The Legend of Boggy Creek, was released in 1972. Two sequels have also been produced. Ragtime composer and pianist Scott Joplin resided in this city and former presidential hopefuls Mike Huckabee and Ross Perot were born in Texarkana.
