Superabundant Grace

“Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound” Romans 5:20 1. “The law entered that the offence might abound.” The law was not given to make men more sinful, but rather to expose their sin. As the apostle Paul declared in Romans 7:7, “What shall we say then? is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, you shall not covet.” The law discovers to us the utter sinfulness of our sin, lest we ever imagine for even a millisecond that any part of our being is without sin. The law declares, “from the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrefying sores:…” Isaiah 1:6. 2. “That grace might much more abound” —The terrors of the law make the comforts of the Gospel sweeter, in seeing how the one sacrifice of the LORD Jesus Christ satisfied God’s law and justice for the guiltiest of sinners, that where sin abounded, God’s grace super abounded, because of the LORD Jesus’ work of substitution for His people, Rom. 5:8-11. Grace reigns to life, eternal life, and this through righteousness, righteousness imputed to God ordained sinners for justification, upon completion of Christ’s work at the cross. A Texarkana Classic

he Ahern home was designed in the Classical Revival style by the Burdsal Company based on a floor plan designed by Mr. and Mrs. Ahern. The first floor consists of a central hall, music room, parlor, library, dining room, kitchen, butler’s pantry and powder room. The second floor consists of four bedrooms, two baths, a nursery room and a sleeping porch added in 1918. All six children slept on the porch during the summer.

The original gas and electric combination chandeliers still illuminate the home and gas and electric sconces can be found in the library and parlor. The wood work was never painted and, once a year, Mrs. Ahern personally oversaw the cleaning of all woodwork. There are six gas fireplaces in the house, four on the first floor and two upstairs; each has a unique mantle design with Italian tile in various colors.

In 2005, the Texarkana Museums System assisted the Ahern family in placing the family home on the National Register of

Historic Places. Through the efforts of Eleanor Horrigan, the youngest daughter of P. J. and Mary O. Ahern, the house was preserved and

plans were made to use the home as a living history museum . In July 2011, this dream became a reality and the Texarkana Museums System acquired the historic property and was excited to finally have a property on the Arkansas side of the twin cities. Your Texarkana Museums System hosts exhibits and cultural programs at the Ahern Home each month – generally on the 4th Saturday of the month. The property is also available for rent as a venue for small weddings, meetings, and events. This historic house museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am until 5 pm and on Sunday from 1 pm until 5 pm. Regular tours take place at 11:30 am., 2:30 pm., and 4:25 pm. To make an appointment for a tour outside of these times or for group tours, please contact us at 903-793-4831.
