Little Grand Canyon - Chidester, Arkansas
Y
ou’ve heard of the Grand Canyon (hopefully), and it’s more than halfway across the country. And yes, I realize the actual Grand Canyon was made world famous by
being cut by Babe the blue ox. Yet there is a destination in our own Arklatex, less than a two and a half hour drive from downtown Shreveport, nicknamed the Little Grand Canyon. Nestled away at the foot of the Ouachitas just outside of Chidester, Arkansas sits an amazing day trip for the family or a week long excursion. White Oak Lake and the waterways that run around them make
up scenery that is best enjoyed with the naked eye, face to face with millions of years of erosion and Earth shifts and deposits. White Oak Lake State Park provides lodging accommodations close by. From RV sites to primitive tent camping, there’s a spot for you. Check with park or state officials before making plans due to current restrictions. Whether it’s swimming, fishing, hiking, biking, or just fun old fashioned exploring, the Little Grand Canyon and surrounding areas are a can’t miss for a relaxing and re-energizing getaway. https://www.arkansasstateparks.com/parks/white-oak-lake-state-park

He was the oldest of 6 children. At the age of 17, Larry enlisted in the United States Air Force, and served his country proudly from 1948 to 1971. He retired as a Lt. Colonel, and was affectionally known to everyone as “Colonel”. Larry attended Boise State College in Boise, Idaho, and Louisiana Tech University. Larry served in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was a radar navigator/bombardier on RB-57’s, B-47’s and B-52’s in the Strategic Air Command. His crew was chosen to compete in the Royal Air Force World Bombing Competition and won 1st place.
Ura E. Spears
February 1, 1928 - December 31, 2020 On February 1st, 1928, nearly 93 years ago, Ura Ermine (McQueen) Spears was born in Jasper, Texas to Arthur and Gertrude (Miller) McQueen. She was the second of three children; an older sister, Mary Elizabeth (McQueen) Ziffle; and a younger brother, Henry Harold McQueen. Her more than 72 year marriage to the late Paul Watson Spears, Jr. began on her 18th birthday, February 1st, 1946. Together they raised four boys to manhood, Paul Watson Spears III “Joe”, Arthur Preston Spears, Donald Patrick Spears and Phillip Andrew Spears. Their offspring includes 7 grandchildren, 16 greatgrandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her siblings, as well as her daughter-in-law, Betty Francis (Gray) Spears, wife of Arthur Preston Spears. She served for more than 40 years as General Secretary and Treasurer of Local 229/AFL/CIO in
While serving in Korea, his sister Jane had her friends write letters to Larry in Korea. He Shreveport, LA where she enabled a workforce of some 350 members to secure employment in fell in love with one of them, Trellis Trotter, and married her upon his return to the the building trades throughout North Louisiana. Her retirement from that was followed by extensive volunteer work in her church and community. states. Larry and Trellis had 3 children, Marcy, Larry Jr. (Bud), and Ginger. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bossier City, LA for more than 60 years and

She had been a devoted Christian from her Trotter; his son, Larry Jr.; sisters, Jane Brookshire and Geneva Stanfield; brother, Max childhood and was committed to seeing her posterity know and observe the things of God. Ledbetter; nephews, Douglas Brookshire and Robert Ledbetter. Church was central to her being and she was there “every time the door opened”. She helped out in the kitchen and was deeply involved in “The Diamond Set” group at church.
He is survived by: his wife Frances Schroll Ledbetter; daughters, Marcy Boyce (Richard) and Ginger French (Rocky); grandchildren, Chris McHalffey, Ryan French (Jennifer), Samuel Broadway, Chad French, Sara Greenville; step-grandson, Tommy Boyce; greatgrandchildren, Corben French (Ramsha), Chloe French, Jordin Broadway, Morgan Greenville, Connor French, Caleb French, Joshua French and Vanessa French; and great-great granddaughter, Laila French; his brother, Charles Ledbetter (Margaret); and sister, Kathy Hurst (Andy). In addition, he is survived by nephews Dale Brookshire (Eileen), David Brookshire, Michael Stanfield (Teresa), Stephen Ledbetter (Diana), Andy Hurst, Adam Hurst, and numerous great nieces and nephew. Larry made the Air Force his career, and loved traveling the world serving his country. He and his family explored, camped, and traveled to every state near them. According to his daughters, it was a wonderful life. Larry was transferred to Barksdale AFB in 1966, and he and his family settled in Haughton.
Her interests included family first and travel was paramount to family togetherness. Having visited nearly all the National Parks, several World’s Fairs with family as well as many points of interest throughout the nation with the Church Travel and Tour Group from First Baptist. She was an adventuresome type and was always up to a challenge and soon she would master it with ease. For example, she owned a Honda Goldwing motorcycle with a sidecar attached and rode it until in her 80’s. She had ridden it along with her husband and sons on many adventures and logged thousands of miles pulling camper trailers from point to point. Her membership in the CMA Christian Motorcycle Association spanned decades and she and her husband were fixtures at the annual CMA Rally near Mena, AR. Having survived scarlet fever at age five and undergoing an extended stay in the hospital and several surgeries, one of which resulted in the total loss of hearing in one ear, she never let her disablement keep her from being an eager participant in things. She played the clarinet in the Bossier High School Band and was a Drum Majorette by sheer determination.
Larry retired from the Air Force in 1971, with honor and dignity for a job well done, and Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Donald Patrick Spears, Jr. “Donnie”, Robert Paul Spears “Robbie”, Arthur Preston Spears, Jr. “Artie”, and Phillip Andrew Spears, Jr. “Spike”. was the recipient of numerous medals and awards. “And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?’ I Corinthians 14:7 As in the distinctive sounds of life, so it is in the declaring of the Gospel of Christ, v. 7. Take for instance the precision of musical instruments. Why before a concert do the musicians take care to tune themWhat care is taken to play them exactly according to the notes and measures! Note the four aspects of every true Gospel message, sounded exactly according to what is written, in verse 6. It must be according to the revelation of God in His Word, according to revelation of the knowledge of Christ, by the faithful proclamation of Christ (prophesying), or by doctrine (teaching and instruction). Verse 8 uses the example of a trumpet that gives an uncertain sound, as in those who would muddy the waters and preach a mixed Gospel message (yeah-nay preaching-1 Corinthians 1:17). Under such preaching, who could ever prepare himself for the battle? The allusion is to the custom of sounding the trumpet, or bugle, to gather soldiers together and prepare them for war- Jeremiah 4:5. Sinners must hear the clear sound of electing grace (God doing the choosing), redeeming grace (Christ’s blood and righteousness and justification at the cross for the elect), and regenerating grace (the Spirit drawing each chosen and redeem sinner to Christ) through the preaching of the singular, solitary, sure message of Christ and HIM crucified! Anything less leaves sinners in confusion. God must grant the sound and the hearing!
