Chimp Haven – Keithville Nestled in the woods south of Greenwood, Louisiana lies 200 acres, home to more than 300 chimpanzees.

Chimp Haven, established in 1995, has provided a forever home and quality care for retired research and entertainment chimps as well as those caught up in the “Joe Exotic” world of pet trade.

Three to four times a year, Chimp Haven opens its doors to the public, allowing everyone to look into the weird world of another type of primate.

Native to the forest and savanna of tropical Africa, chimpanzees have been used in biomedical testing for nearly a century as well as the entertainment industry. Most chimps were tossed aside when their use was up before Chimp Haven was founded.

Chimps are more closely related to humans genetically than any other species, making them a perfect animal for testing purposes. During the 1980’s, the US Government launched a massive chimpanzee breeding program, using the offspring for HIV and Hepatitis studies.

Those programs have declined since the late 1990’s, but research chimps were still in need of a secure and loving environment for the late stages of their lives. Chimp Haven saw the need, and has provided quality services for those animals for the past 15 years.

William Harper "Bill" Towery, Shreveport real estate icon and beloved husband, father, and step-father, died on Sunday, December 20th, 2020 after a courageous battle with Covid 19. Towery was 82. A lifelong resident of Shreveport, "Papa" was a pioneer in independently owned and operated residential real estate firms. Known for his thoughtful, trustworthy, steady demeanor and character, Towery provided hundreds of employment opportunities for those who worked with the Towery team.

After two years as a Phi Gamma Delta at the University of Oklahoma, Towery graduated from Centenary College in 1962. Following his subsequent service as a 1st Lieutenant in Military Intelligence in the United States Army, Towery returned to Shreveport in 1964 to begin his career at J. Wesley Dowling Real Estate. After 22 years at Dowling, Towery launched his own company - Towery Real Estate - which he ran until his retirement in 2012.

Towery was Shreveport Realtor of the Year in 1992 and President of the Shreveport Board of Realtors in 1994.

A gifted artist, Towery loved painting and landscape architecture. He painted daily and could regularly be seen curating his self-constructed fountains, fishponds, and backyard gardens. Papa was a witty, funny, quirky and loving man. His loss will leave Shreveport and his family with an enormous deficit of kindness.

Preceded in death by his parents, Dick, Sr. and Harriet Towery, his brother Dick, Jr. and his son, William Harper Towery, Jr. Bill is survived by a family he adored: wife, Sue Towery, whom he loved unconditionally for 45 years, his daughter Stephanie Towery Hollis and husband Ted, son Michael Towery, step children, Sigrid Rasmussen Williams, Johnny Rasmussen, Paul Rasmussen and wife Ashley, and 14 grandchildren - Madeleine Hollis, Emma Hollis, Carla Hollis, Cassie Hollis Jeselink, Alisha Myers, Grace Williams, Lila Williams, PJ Rasmussen, Arden Rasmussen, and Luke Rasmussen, and great-grandchildren Jade, Brentlee, Bryce and Kambri, and Sister-in-Law Suzanne Towery and her son Alan Towery.

Charles "Charlie" Edward Weed Charles was born on May 31, 1931 in Shreveport, Louisiana to Charles Mitchell Weed and Ivy Fleming Weed and went to be with his heavenly Father on Friday, December 18, 2020 in Shreveport, Louisiana. He graduated from St. John Berchmans Catholic School in 1949. He attended Louisiana State University and was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. After college, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a communications specialist stationed in Japan.

Charles held various sales positions before joining Southland Paint Company becoming Executive Vice President in the 1960's. He was Vice President of Corporate Development for the Michigan General Corporation from 1969 through 1982 and became Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer from 1982 and thereafter retired from Michigan General in 1984.

Charles had a larger than life personality, was charming and would be immediately recognized for his beautiful smile and boisterous laugh everywhere he went. Early in his life Charles found his love of sports. He excelled in football, basketball (all-city team) and baseball. Later, while in the military, he took up golf and became a low single handicap. He also loved gardening and could always be found caring for his plants on his patio or tending to "Sophie's Garden" at Betty Virginia Park which was dedicated to his little yorkie, Sophie, and his late wife, Charlotte.

He was a major contributor to bridge in the United States since the 1960's.

He was a top-flight player, administrator and teacher. He competed and won at the highest levels winning the Grand National Team Championship in 1975 and the North American Open Swiss team in the summer of 1978.

Additionally, he won many sectional and more than 50 regional tournaments.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Charlotte Morgan Weed and sisters, Delores Colbert and Mary DeFriend. He is survived by his two sons, John Charles Weed and Jim Weed and wife, Lori; stepson, Scott Bryan and wife, Lisa; grandchildren, John Charles Houston Weed, Dalton Weed and Sawyer Weed; sisters, Peggy Pernici and Carilyn Wallace; a very special niece, Christy DeFriend and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Towery family would like to extend a special thanks to the extraordinary team of frontline caregivers who sacrificially served Papa for the past several months. That list includes: Sharon Sno, the nurses at Willis-Knighton North, WK-SICU, WK-MICU, 2 East, 3 West, 5 West as well as Dr. Le, Dr. Zhu and Dr. Sin. The family would like to thank the wonderful team of doctors, nurses and staff at Christus Highland Medical Center/COVID unit for their courage, The family will hold a graveside memorial at Forest Park Cemetery at 10am patience and loving care of Charlie. on Monday, January 4th.
