HOW MICROTRENDS NEGATIVELY IMPACT FASHION

Microtrends During a nightly scroll through someone’s TikTok For You Page, there was a lengthy ad from the clothing site Shein. In a time of laziness, I opted to watch the ad, revealing a fashion haul featuring a 17-year old showcasing an oversized box of clothes. The prevalence of such fashion hauls on platforms like TikTok and YouTube was eyeopening.

Upon further research there has been similar ads for different sites, using the same format and even the same clothes. Fast fashion’s notorious trend chasing and the rapid rise and fall of microtrends became evident. Microtrends refer to short-lived fashion aesthetics that dominate platforms like TikTok before fading into obscurity.

The dark side of microtrends lies not only in the consumption of cheaply-made goods but in the culture surrounding it. Wearing last month’s trendy dress might attract criticism in a world where changing styles via fast-fashion hauls is encouraged.

The alarming aspect is that, despite a general preference for ethical fashion, fast fashion items can still be found appealing. These vendors, adept at trend cycles, exploit online presences of consumers, enticing wardrobe changes multiple times a year.

The accelerated pace of fashion, influenced by microtrends, ahs shifted from four traditional seasons to 52 micro-seasons per year.

Consequently, garments are designed to last weeks rather than months, contributing to the staggering amount of clothing waste- 81 pounds per American annually.

While the solution seems to be donating to thrift stores, the reality is that only a fraction gets sold, and the rest ends up in landfills. The productions of disposable garments often involves poor workers in sweatshops, mainly from the global south.

Despite awareness of these issues, social pressures, and brand manipulations often downplay the ethical dilemma. The question arises: Is mass consumption for fleeting trends truly worth it?

Reflecting on an individuals own experience during and after the pandemic, they transitioned to ethical fashion, shopping at thrift stores, supporting sustainable brands, and altering their own garments. The shift not only led to a sense of pride in their sustainable choices but also garnered compliments on the longevity and uniqueness of their outfits.

While acknowledging the privilege associated with ethical fashion, there’s no excuse for those who claim they can’t afford it while splurging on fast fashion. In the end, the pursuit of constantly changing trends may not enhance one’s appearance or satisfaction, as personal style and sustainability often outshine the allure of fleeting microtrends.

The Gillnetter puts it perfectly when they said “The rise of microtrends has led to an increase in consumerism and a decrease in personal style.

Microtrends are bad for the environment, for the consumer, for the people forced to make them, and, most relevantly for the average teenager, they take away the self-expressive freedom of a personal style.”

However, contemporary consumers seek the latest trends but are unwilling to pay a hefty price, placing less emphasis on quality. This shift in preferences led fashion retail leaders to identify an opportunity in the market, giving rise to the concept of ‘fast fashion.’

Coined in the early 2000's, fast fashion in retail describes the swift transition of designs from the runway to current trends. Retailers adopted this approach to boost profits by streamlining key aspects of the supply chain, emphasizing rapid manufacturing at a low cost. The concept has reshaped the industry by fostering a quick response philosophy, enhancing forecast accuracy, and facilitating swift merchandise turnover for major retailers.

This strategy revolves around building clothing collections based on the latest fashion trends showcased in spring and autumn fashion shows across global fashion capitals. Fast fashion, despite being labeled as a disruptive force, has significantly benefited consumers by prioritizing simplicity, convenience, accessibility, and affordability, thereby positively impacting companies.

Zara, with approximately 1,600 stores in 58 countries, stands as the benchmark for fast fashion. Renowned for selling own-label clothes in the latest styles, Zara excels in frequently updating ranges and minimizing the time between design and production. The company’s efficent process has allowed it to produce around 30,000 units annually., featuring 18,000 designs within an average of 3 weeks. This shortened production timeline enhances product variety and availability while expanding the customer base.

While fast fashion has earned its reputation as disposable fashion due to significant associated waste, some retailers, like H&M, are addressing environmental concerns. Despite being major contributors to inexpensive clothing, these retailers are adopting recycling initiatives, converting discarded fabric into various products such as blankets, insulation, carpet padding, and pillow stuffing.

As the fast fashion sector grapples with the environmental repercussions of mass production, there are indications of a decrease. However, as long as retailers enforce corporate social and environmental initiatives and consumer demand remains high, the fast fashion business model is likely to persist in the foreseeable future.

Plato's Closet's sponsorship played a pivotal role in dispelling the persistent misconception that second-hand clothing is synonymous with a cheap or outdated aesthetic. Instead, our collaboration demonstrated how thrifted fashion can exude choice and sophistication, challenging preconceived notions about the appearance and allure of preloved garments.

Plato's Closet, a renowned purveyor of gently-used clothing at affordable prices, has become a cornerstone in the realm of thrift fashion. What do you think of our project, “Thrifting My Way” and its motive?

Monica: “I think it is very beneficial to get the word out on how to recycle your style! A lot of kids want to feel confident and dress how they desire but may not be able to spend a fortunate on brand new items! They can come to Plato’s and experience a whole new outlook on getting items 50-70% off retail price & you can sell to earn cash and recycle your old clothes so someone else can rock it! You guys are spreading the message and that’s awesome” Give us your opinion on thrifting and its impactful role in the fashion industry.

Monica: “I think thrifting is so cool because what is someone else trash can be a treasure! It doesn’t even have to be trash to someone, it could be that they are just out of that phase but it can help the next person that is in that phase feel confident to rock it! Thrifting is all a recycling era and I feel it benefits the person getting rid of the items and the person buying the items!

It can make people feel good finding things they have been looking for at a lower price or finding dupes of something they have been wanting but it’s too expensive!”

Heema Solanki, is a high school senior that studies at both Killeen ISD Career Center and Central Texas College, where she is working on her interdisciplinary associates for math and science. She is involved in clubs such as National Honors Society, Interact Club, Student Council, and DECA. Her hobbies include art and VASE. She founded this project back in 2022 with her then partner Michel Escobar, where they promoted thrifting while spreading awareness about the negative impacts and facts about fast fashion. Solanki is passionate about the ban and reduced usage of fast fashion, she cares about our environment and fashion which led to the discovery of the benefits of thrifting.

Ella Brzezowski is a high school senior that studies at both Killeen ISD Career Center and Harker Heights High School, where she studies general secondary studies and marketing. She is involved with her community and school by participating in DECA and Excel Club, and being involved in numerous Volunteering events. Her Hobbies include hiking, crafts, and volunteering.

Brzezowski is passionate about the environment and making the world a better place for everyone to live in, so when she found out the effects of fast fashion and its impacts she was determined to join a cause to stop it. Which is how she got involved with this project.

Brand Insight VXBEE BY V’JAE BROWN A Local Thrift-Based Brand By KISD Student VXBEE Brand was founded out of a deep concern for the environmental impact of fast fashion. Through upcycling preowned garments via screen printing and sewing, VXBEE strives to reduce landfill pollution and emissions. The brand’s mission extends beyond fashion, advocating for sustainable change and promoting body positivity, disability awareness, and inclusivity.

The Process VXBEE's clothing creation process begins by sourcing thrifted garments, aligning with their commitment to sustainable fashion. Once a piece is chosen, a stencil with a mesh outline of the desired design is prepared. This stencil serves as a template for the subsequent ink application. Ink is carefully spread over the stencil onto the clothing, imprinting the chosen design. The inked item then undergoes a thorough drying process to ensure the design adheres effectively to the fabric.

Finally, the dried clothing item is meticulously packaged for sale, often including branding elements that reflect the unique identity and eco-conscious values of VXBEE. This entire process highlights a blend of creativity, craftsmanship, and sustainability in the production of each distinctive clothing piece.

Brown is very involved with his community and school, he is on the YAC (Youth Advisory Commission) which works alongside his city council to plan and promote events for the city. Along with YAC, Brown works as a radio broadcaster to broadcast sports games to the district and city. It is also important to mention
