Every year you buy a new costume, you miss the ones that are right in front of you. We know how easy it is to turn to online shopping or seasonal stores when trying to create the perfect outfit for Halloween. Just because these are the first things you think of, doesn't always mean they're the easiest, most affordable, or best for the environment. Consider thrifting your costume and utilizing pieces you already have. By doing this, you're helping out the environment, which is greatly harmed by the manufacturing of clothes. There are plenty of pieces laying around your place and at the thrift store that can create the costume you 've always envisioned. Save yourself some money this year and find pieces that no one else has. By thrifting your outfit, you know you won't run into anyone with a costume quite like yours. The hardest part is coming up with the perfect look, but we came up with some ideas to get you going!

As a student, I mainly began getting involved with Thrift Club through attending the monthly thrift swaps and being a stylist for the thrift gala (my favorite event of the school year). Now, on the board I get to help my favorite club promote sustainable and slow fashion on a campus I love. I personally love thrifting because of the feeling I get when I find a piece of clothing I love after hours of searching through endless racks. My favorite thrift find is definitely my go-to pair of Lee black baggy jeans that I thrifted in Switzerland. This pair of jeans has now been in my closet for 3 years and I doubt I’ll be letting go of them anytime soon.
I started thrifting in middle school because I have always been interested in fashion and wanted to find clothes that no one else had! When I found out that UF had a thrift club, I started going to the swaps and knew I wanted to get more involved. I have now found my best iends through this club all while getting to promote sustainable fashion! When I go thrifting, I am looking for good quality pieces that I will want to wear for a long ime. My biggest thrifting tip is to check the material of the item and make sure to try it on! My favorite things I’ve ever thrifted are a beaded halter top and a pink cargo mini skirt. I am so excited for this year with thrift club & to meet all the new members!

For me, thrifting has always been a place of comfort and creativity. I began thrifting back when I was starting high school and searching for my true sense of style, and found such joy and passion in it that even now, in my third year of college, I go right back to the thrift store, tote and headphones in hand. Joining UF’s Thrift Club was a complete no-brainer to me, but the community and amazing individuals I have been able to meet through it has been nothing short of a blessing. Finding a group of people who are as passionate as myself for sustainability and fashion has been insurmountably helpful in allowing me to feel even more comfortable and confident in this trade, and has given me a space where I truly feel seen and understood What I admire most about thrifting is how easy it can be to find that perfect piece, or that one missing closet item, and have it become a staple for your everyday outfit.
