Welcome to QUEEN STREET STADIUM Good afternoon and welcome to our visitors from the other side of the ring road, AFC Wulfrunians, for this important FA Vase clash. While at this stage of the season there are still a number of non-league clubs focused on the FA Cup, the FA Vase and FA Trophy competitions kick-off this weekend and both competitions offer the most realistic chance of reaching Wembley Stadium.
painted banners, wore the blue and white and followed the local boys to Wembley. Just under 14,000 were at Wembley and despite the fact the day ended with a 1-0 defeat, it marked the start of a love affair with grassroots that lasts until this day.
I have to say that the FA Vase is the best National competition that there is.
The disappointment of that defeat was washed away when the Yeltz returned two years later and beat Fleetwood Town 3-1 at Wembley - yes, the current League One side!
Now, I may be slightly biased as my first exposure to football at this level was when my mates told me about this local team who were just a few games from Wembley.
Amazing to think how things have changed for both clubs, as Fleetwood were rising up the leagues just a few years ago, Halesowen were on the brink of closure.
Their ground could be seen from the back garden of the house we just moved into, it was Halesowen Town and the year was 1983.
After the win over Fleetwood, the following season was probably the best with a barnstorming 6-3 replay win over Warrington Town in the semi-final at Telford United securing a place in the final where Southall United, including a young Les Ferdinand, were on the end of a 3-0 Wembley defeat.
The first game I experienced was a 3-1 quarter final home win over Shepshed Charterhouse that gave them a two-legged semi-final against Burnham for a chance to play at Wembley Stadium - a Burnham side that had beaten the previous seasons winners, Forest Green Rovers, 4-0 in their quarter final Yes, the current day moneybags Forest Green Rovers how times have changed!
That seaon marked the first of 7 consecutive appearances in the first round proper of the FA Cup for Halesowen so perhaps the belief that success breeds success is apparent during that dramatic rise for what we now consider to be one of the biggest non-league clubs in the area.
As an 11 year old kid, this was some experience as we jumped into my mates Dad's car and trekked down to Burnham along with hundreds of other Yeltz fans holding onto a 2-1 lead from the home leg.
I'll always have fond memories of this competition formed by those early years of watching Halesowen Town with my mates and I'll always remember having dreams to watch games further afield at exotic clubs like Bristol Manor Farm, Almondsbury Greenway and Not only did they hold on but a repeat of the first leg scoreline saw us book a place at Wembley Stadium for Newastle Blue Star. a date against VS Rugby - division rivals and a So much imagination as a kid and one that I am trying relatively local derby! to impart on my Premier League obsessed nephew Coaches were booked, full of team mates and parents from Hasbury Rangers, my Dad's team as we all

HODSON'S VOICE - The Chairman Good afternoon, and welcome back to Queen Street, where today we welcome players, management and supporters of AFC Wulfrunians as we take a break from our league programme and venture into the excitement of Cup Football with the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FA Vase - the biggest competition in non league football. In fact, cup football is very much the theme here at Queen Street in the next couple of weeks, as next Saturday Cheadle Town are our visitors in the Staffs FA Vase and then, on Wednesday October 21st, Wolverhampton United visit us in the First Round of the JW Hunt Cup. Added to that last Wednesday's visitors Shawbury United will return to Bilston to play a League Cup First Round tie on Wednesday November 18th so there is much drama and Cup action scheduled for Queen Street in the coming weeks. Someone, I think it was supporter Alan Hammersley, commented on Facebook recently, that though we're still early in the season, following Bilston was like taking a roller coaster ride and its a perfect description - it's certainly never boring is it?!
Players and Management have changed periodicly in order to accommodate those improvements but importantly, just as we don't scream and shout when things go well, we don't panic and make knee jerk reactions every time we hit a sticky patch and that's vital if we are to instil stability and consistency into the club. Andy Rutter, Danny, Lee and then Pughie did the Club proud in their time with us and Jon and his staff were installed in the Summer to take us to the next level of our planned progression. Already we're seeing the benefit of their experience, with us being a much harder team to beat and in patches, we've seen some wonderful football. Jon has seen just two players remain from last season, and assembled a good young squad, proud to represent Bilston. They are young and keen and will make mistakes occasionally but they'll learn from them and with your support and encouragement, become the team you want them to be. Let's not also forget that because of the support and history of our club, there's a lot of expectation when they pull on that orange jersey, plus lesser teams seem to raise their game every time they play Bilston - we are still a 'scalp' to be had at this level - we see that week in, week out.
But whilst agreeing with the roller coaster euphemism, I We aint yer bog standard club - We'm Bilston Aye We?! would also add that at least the roller coaster is going in the right direction! This isn't meant to sound like the dreaded 'vote of confidence', it's simply trying to put in perspective how Progress has been made year on year and will continue far we've come, and how far we aim to go. to be made, because everyone involved, from Jon and his staff and players on the front line, to ourselves and Add into the equation the potential we have coming the backroom staff, are working their socks off to make through via Scott's youth team, and we can confidently this Club the proud place it used to be. mutter those immortal words, "The future's bright - the

FA Vase History The FA Vase effectively replaced The FA Amateur Cup in 1974. In that year The FA Council had decided to abolish the official distinction between amateur and professional footballers and this meant the end of The Amateur Cup and Amateur Internationals involving England.
The 2013-14 Vase competition was the 40th in history. Wembley has hosted 34 Finals, Villa Park and St Andrews two each, Upton Park and White Hart Lane one each. Thirty-two different clubs have got their hands on The Vase, donated by former FA Councillor Frank Adams. Whitley Bay lead the way with four wins.
Aficionados of The Vase competition tend to rate the 1992 Final between Wimborne Town and Guiseley as the best so far. Wessex League Wimborne had a modest record in the competition before then, having never ventured beyond the Third Round, but they embarked on a spectacular Vase journey that took them all the way from the First Round to For the first time in history, small clubs – even village clubs The Final. A goal down after 14 minutes at Wembley, the – had the chance of playing in a national final at Wembley. Dorset side fought back to win 5-3. When The Vase Final returned to Wembley, a record The first Vase Finalists were Hoddesdon Town from the Spartan League and Epsom & Ewell from the Surrey Senior 36,232 fans saw Truro City beat AFC Totton 3-1. Whitley Bay, the 2002 winners, achieved a sensational hat-trick of League. The Hertfordshire side edged home 2-1 before a Final victories from 2009 to 2011. crowd of 9,000. Two-hundred and twenty clubs entered The Vase in its first season but they did not include those clubs which had dominated in The Amateur Cup. Enfield, Hendon, Dagenham, Skelmersdale United and others at their level were immediately allocated to The FA Trophy.
Even a competition as democratic as The Vase had its elite clubs in the early years. Billericay Town, initially of the Essex Senior League, won it three times in four seasons. Halesowen Town, then in the West Midlands Regional League, appeared in three Finals and were successful in two of them. They even beat a Southall side that had a young Les Ferdinand leading the attack.
The Northern League’s dominance continued for two more seasons, with success for Dunston UTS and Spennymoor Town but Sholing, the Wessex League champions, broke that winning streak by defeating West Auckland Town 1-0.
Until the new Wembley opened in 2007 the record attendance for a Vase Final was the 26,489 who saw the drawn 1989 Final between Sudbury Town and Tamworth at the old Wembley. Tamworth won the replay 3-0 at Peterborough and Ian Moores, a former Division One player with Tottenham Hotspur, scored one of the goals.
That defeat leaves Glossop North End (2), West Auckland Town (2) and AFC Sudbury (3) as the only clubs to have lost in more than one FA Vase Final with Whitley Bay (4), Billericay Town (3) and Brigg Town (2) the only teams to have appeared and won in multiple finals and not taste defeat at that stage.
However, last season the Northern League's grip on the trophy was restored when North Shields came from behind to defeat Glossop North End 2-1 and claim the prize.

THE GAFFER - Manager Jon Purdie Welcome to our near neighbours AFC Wulfrunians for this FA Vase clash. AFC are enjoying a good start to their campaign in the Midland Football League and will certainly present a tough challenge for our lads today. However it's a game that provides a relief from our league campaign at the moment after a busy few weeks of league games.
hopefully just being able to enjoy the challenge we face will reflect in the performance on the pitch. I felt we took a step in the right direction in terms of performance against a very good Shawbury United team on Wednesday who I expect to see challenging for the title and it certainly looks that way with their results so far. Thankfuly our squad is beginning to look a bit stronger after a couple of threadbare weeks due to unavailability and injuries so it gives us a few more options.
There is no pressure on us as, realistically, we are not expected to win being a division Lets get behind the lads in this exciting cup below Wulfrunians and our relative league game today. positions. Enjoy the game and encourage the lads! I just want 100% effort and commitment from Jon the players and can ask no more of them,

CASTLECROFT STADIUM / CASTLECROFT / WOLVERHAMPTON / WV3 8NA
Although AFC Wulfrunians only came into existence in 2005, the club actually has over ninety years of history behind it. This is because today’s team is an offshoot of Old Wulfrunians FC who were formed in 1922. Having operated in the Birmingham AFA for many years, the club grew and grew and by the turn of the new millennium the strength of the club was reaching new heights. By the end of the 2004/05 season the first XI had a batch of young players who were deemed too strong for the B’ham AFA, having done the domestic double three years in a row and having made three appearances in the Hunt Cup final at Molineux, so the decision was taken to step up to the West Midlands (Regional) League division two under the new name of AFC Wulfrunians. With the Memorial Ground not meeting the criteria for the League, Wulfs were forced to ground share with fellow WMRL side Wolverhampton Casuals.
denied promotion due to ground grading issues. More disappointment came as another JW Hunt Cup final at Molineux was lost, this time to Bloxwich United. The 2009/10 season was the most exciting in AFC Wulfrunians’ short history. It started with the signing of a long lease on their new ground, Castlecroft Stadium, and continued with an FA Cup run that saw them reach the second qualifying round having beaten higher division opponents Boldmere St Michaels, Chasetown and Kidsgrove Athletic before eventually bowing out to Blue Square North play-off finalists Alfreton Town. The league campaign saw them eventually finish 3rd after holding top spot for a long time. Disappointment came in the form of losing 1-0 to Bustleholme in the final of the League Cup.
The 2010/11 season brought another title challenge which ultimately ended in a 3rd place finish but they did win the JW Hunt Cup beating Gornal Athletic 3-0 in the The first season in the West Midlands (Regional) League final. FA VASE HISTORY AFC's first two ventures into the FA Vase ended with defeats at the first hurdle on both occasions - their first ever game in the competition in 2007/2008 ended in a 2-1 defeat away at Cadbury Athletic and the following season the fell to Barwell at the same stage. Their first victory in the competition came in 2009/2010 when they beat Dudley Sports 4-1 and followed that with a 2-1 win over Heather St Johns. In the 1st round proper they fell heavily at home to Friar Lane & Epworth 5-1, their biggest defeat in the competition which they also suffered at Heath Hayes in 2011/2012. 2012/2013 saw their best performance in the competition to date when they beat Pelsall Villa (4-0), Pershore Town (5-2), Tipton Town (3-0) and Shawbury United (5-3) on route to the 3rd round proper where they lost out to Borrowash Victoria 3-2 at home.
West Midlands Regional League Round-Up Shawbury United maintained their 4 goals per game average in the league this season with a 4-2 win at Bilston Town on Wednesday night.
The hosts took the lead midway through the second half but it was then Cassies turn to draw level from a set piece but depsite chances late on and a goal disallowed for offside, they finally left a game with a share of the points.
Perhaps a harsh scoreline on the hosts who had taken an early lead and conceded the 4th goal late on when chasing the game but that is now 3 defeats On Saturday Wolverhampton Sporting Community on the trot for the Steelmen. play host to Dudley Town and with other sides above them in the FA Vase, a win could see either team Shawbury stay in touch with the leaders and jump back into the top six. currently sit 6 points behind the leaders Cradley with 3 games in hand, one of which will be played Dudley Town will be looking for the same outcome on Saturday as Bewdley Town make the trek to as they travel to Wellington Amateurs who currently Shropshire while Cradley and Bridgnorth both face occupy 21st position with only Tipton Town below FA Vase ties. them. Elsewhere on Wednesday evening, Tipton Town doubled their goal tall y for the season when scoring 3 at Bromyard Town - unfortunately they conceded 5 and are still awaiting that elusive first league victory.
Pegasus Juniors will be pushing for their 4th league win on the trot when they play host to Smethwick Rangers and victory for either side should see them climb into the top 6 just behind the leading pack.
And there I go, telling everyone in the last league round-up how Wolverhampton Casuals are the only team yet to draw a game - and on Wednesday night I was there to witness a 3-3 draw at Smethwick Rangers!
Subject to FA Vase replays there are two massive top of the table clashes in midweek as Tuesday sees Cradley Town head over to AFC Bridgnorth putting their unbeaten away record up against the home sides unbeaten home record.
Quite how they drew the game, with at least 4 great chances in the last 5 minutes, is quite puzzling but neither side defended well enough to warrant taking the 3 points that were clearly there for the taking.
Then, on Wednesday, Shawbury United host Willenhall Town who are the surprise package of the season so far and currently sit one place behind Shawbury in 5th.
However, with AFC Bridgnorth hosting Willenhall in Cassies took an early lead only to be pegged back a the FA Vase this afternoon, a draw there will see few minutes later. BILSTON TOWN UNDER 13 FLOODLIT CUP The Bilston Town Floodlit Cup was created in 2009/10 and still is the only midweek junior competition where every game is played under floodlights, at Bilston Town FC. It really is a unique competition that brings together teams from across the Midlands and offers them the professional experience of playing midweek, under lights, with teams having full access to all stadium facilities as well as having a referee and two assistants appointed to every tie. Limited to 32 teams and played throught the season on a Tuesday and Thursday night it offers teams the chance to play against teams they would never normally meet in circumstances most of these players will never experience again. From it's very inception it has caught the imagination of the teams involved, and every year the 32 places are quickly taken up, with several more teams on a 'waiting list' should anyone drop out. This season has seen teams from six different junior leagues around the Midlands enter the competition, including our first ever entry from the Tamworth League making it the biggest junior competition in the Country. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Bilston, the teams not only compete for the prestigious Floodlit Cup Trophy and Title of Midlands Champions, the winners also receive ÂŁ100 prize money, courtesy of the Bilston Rotary Club. It really is the biggest, best and most unique junior competition around and last season we had professional action images from each round of the competition courtesy of our partnership with ThreeFiveThree Photography. The First Round Draw took place on Thursday September 10th with the subsequent rounds being drawn after the final tie of each round has been completed. YOUNG 'UNS - Youth Team Report Good afternoon all!
Who knows, at end of the night we could be 1 more game away from the big boys imagine that!
It's been another week off for the lads whoch is not ideal preperation for our next match, the FA Youth Cup tie at Stourbridge on Monday.
The draw for the next round of the competition has given us or Stourbridge a trip to Pilkington XXX or Romulus - again, a massive incentive to get through this round.
Stourbridge have been in fine form this season sitting on top of the Midland Floodlit Youth League Premier Division South, so it will be a very tough game for the lads. That said, I know what I have in the dressing room so if we turn up with the same attitude as we have done so far this season we will give a good account of ourselves. Despite the small number of games the lads have played, so far this season three youth team lads have now got 1st team minutes which is great for the youh team set up.
After that, the football league clubs come into the draw so the opportunity to draw a full time academy team is just two victories away. Stourbridge know only too well how those games are to play in as they faced Bradford City at home a couple of seasons ago, just losing out on penalties in front of around 600 people so it would be great for our lads to experience something like that. And last year Kidderminster Harriers faced Blackpool at Agbborough in front of another healthy crowd and while the result did not go their way, the lads had a taste of a big cup tie atmosphere. For anyone wishing to travel to support the youth team the ground address for Stourbridge is in the away travel section of this programme.
Let's hope it will be a few more before the end of the One more bit of cup news is the next round of the league cup where we will host Oadby Town in the season. 2nd round after they beat Leek Town last week in Our game on Monday is at Amblecote and has a their first round tie. 7.30pm kick-off and It would be good to see some It will be another tough test so all support is friendly faces there so please come and cheer the welcome, the tie is scheduled for Queen Street on lads on. Monday 19th October.
Lewis Archer will be hoping to add to his hattrick against Hereford in the last round of the FA Youth Cup when we travel to Stourbridge on Monday evening.

More often than not, an official would prefer not to get a mention in The Non-League Paper.
Officials may be maligned by some, but where would we be without them and their dedication?
It’s a job where it’s much better to fly under the radar.
When starting out, it can be a lonely, dare I say, an intimidating job.
But sometimes we just have to talk about them and United Counties League flagger John Clark is no exception.
At the park levels it can’t be easy to turn up all by yourself and take charge of 22 players, plus substitutes, supporters and managers, all trying to put pressure on you and influence you.
On Tuesday night at Desborough Town v Harborough Town the 61-year-old reached a remarkable 1,000 games. Nearly all have been as an assistant referee since he ran the line for a UCL game back in December 1974. Clark remembers his debut fondly. The man in the middle for Stamford against Spalding that day was Brian Hill, who went onto take charge of the 1988 FA Cup final between Liverpool and Wimbledon. He also recalled an irate Stamford-supporting pensioner trying to attack the officials as they left the pitch with her umbrella! Something he assured was seen as humorous in those day.
If they don’t like your decisions then you are on your own. That’s why John says it’s so important for officials to help each other. “I just really enjoy it,” he told me. “But I can honestly say if all matches under the auspices of the FA were controlled by three officials then there would be more referees. “One of the reasons why there’s a fall-out of referees at grass-roots level is because they are all on their own. It’s like the loneliness of the long-distance runner. When these young lads start refereeing on the local parks, it’s them against the rest of the world.
Speaking to John it was clear how much he loves his time in the black. He says he’s made “I’m a big believer that nobody helps us many friends through the refereeing because they are not there to help us. So if we community and he plans to keep going as don’t help each other in our three person long as he can. team then we’ve got problems. We must When he does decide to hang up his flag, the support each other.” leagues in the area will no doubt feel his And we must support them. retirement. Without people like John giving by Matt Badcock, The Non League Paper up their time to do something they love, football won’t happen.
NON-LEAGUE PYRAMID SNIPPETS Game Abandoned in Last Minute AFC RUSHDEN & Diamonds and Kings Langley must wait to find out the result of their bizarre last minute abandonment on Tuesday night. Kings Langley took the lead in the 76th minute in the Southern Division One Central game but Diamonds seemingly sealed a point and kept up their unbeaten run with a Dan Quigley goal right at the death.
“Attendances have fallen by half since the opening day of the season and it was felt that a change at this point was required.” Head of recruitment Paul Ogden, a former manager at Northwich Victoria, Leek Town and Witton, will take temporary charge on Saturday for the visit of Ossett Albion in the FA Trophy preliminary round. Former Droylsden Player Jailed for Horror Tackle
The equaliser sparked anger from the hosts who felt NATHANIEL KERR, who played for a number of Nonthey should have been given the ball back by Rushden League sides, has been jailed for a year after an after one of their players went down injured. intentional horror tackle in a Sunday League game. The match restarted but there was to be another coming together in the fifth minute of stoppage time when Diamonds’ Brad Harris was challenged and both sets of coaching staff and players once again got involved.
Kerr, also known as Natt, most recently played for Droylsden at the end of last season but has also turned out for FC Halifax Town, Northwich Victoria, Ashton United and Barrow. He started his career at Crewe Alexandra and played three times in the Football League for Rotherham.

Both clubs are awaiting a decision from the Southern League on whether the result will stand or if the game will have to be replayed. Witton Sack Dundas After Ten Games
He was playing for Manchester Sunday side AFC Gold Cup when he attacked Stuart Parsons just two minutes into the first game of the season on August 30 last year.

Judge Stuart Driver QC said he had no option but to send Kerr, who had previous convictions for violence, to prison for the harm caused.
“Let’s make it clear what we are talking about here,” he said. “This wasn’t a late or misjudged tackle in a football game.
and the Fans For Diversity campaign, run in partnership between Kick It Out and the Football Supporters’ Federation (FSF).
“We are talking about an assault where one man flew through the air and stamped both of his feet on another man’s leg, intentionally, albeit in the heat of the moment, causing him serious injury.
Players from all teams involved will wear t-shirts recognising Kick It Out and Fans For Diversity during the pre-match warm up, with supporters in attendance welcomed with badges, stickers, wristbands and fan clappers.
“This is a case where a great deal of harm was caused. It has had a serious impact on (the victim’s) life. “I have taken into account that this isn’t the kind of case this court normally deals with. You hadn’t been drinking and it wasn’t late at night. “But it was in a fast moving situation and in the heat of the moment, you did something which when you realised the consequences, you regretted.” Shaymen Appoint New Boss FORMER Oldham Athletic boss Darren Kelly has been named Neil Aspin’s successor at FC Halifax Town. The Northern Irishman was sacked after just nine games as Oldham manager and now has been tasked with replacing Aspin at The Shay. The ex-Halifax boss was sacked last month after a slow start to the Vanarama National League campaign and the Shaymen currently sit second bottom with one win from 13 games. Kelly becomes only the third permanent manager since Halifax reformed at the start of the 2008-09 season and the 36-year-old has signed a deal until the end of the season with an option to extend it. “I am delighted to be joining such an historic club,” Kelly, who will be assisted by former Forest Green, Morecambe, Chester and Stalybridge boss Jim Harvey, said. “This is a fantastic opportunity for me and I am excited about the challenge we have ahead of us.” Chairman David Bosomworth added: “We are delighted to welcome both Darren and Jim to the football club. They are both highly regarded within the game and we are confident they have the drive and ambition to take this club forward.” Non-League Day Update FOUR teams are dedicating their home games to Kick It Out as Non-League Day celebrates four years of partnership with football’s equality and inclusion organisation. Aldershot Town, Boreham Wood, Bromsgrove Sporting and Sheffield FC have nominated their home fixtures on Non League Day to the work of Kick It Out
Vanarama National League side Aldershot Town have renamed one of their stands ahead of Non-League Day. The ‘Fans For Diversity stand’ will help encourage inclusivity amongst Shots supporters, with the campaign offering ten season tickets for use over the 2015-16 season. In a new addition to activities this season, Kick It Out and Fans For Diversity will visit each of the home grounds on Monday 5 and Tuesday 6 October ahead of their dedicated games. The Kick It Out roadshow will see the organisation visit each club across two days, to deliver resources as well as host a unique event at each club. Starting at Boreham Wood, the roadshow will visit Aldershot before heading north to Sheffield for an overnight stay, with the two-day trip concluding at Bromsgrove Sporting. Director of Kick It Out Roisin Wood said: “We are delighted to be continuing our successful partnership with Non-League Day. “Over the past five years Non-League Day has developed into one of the most important dates for the semi-professional and amateur game, as it recognises a level of football which often doesn’t get the attention it deserves. “Last season was our biggest involvement to date, with Blyth Spartans, Dulwich Hamlet, Lewes and Marine all dedicating their fixtures to Kick It Out. This was a major success and we want to continue that with the clubs involved this year. “It is vital that the organisation’s key messages of equality and inclusion are spread across the NonLeague and grass-roots game and we are thrilled that Aldershot Town, Boreham Wood, Bromsgrove Sporting and Sheffield FC have agreed to promote the work of Kick It Out.” In other Non-League Day news, Redgate Rangers of the Anglian Combination will be producing their first ever matchday programme for their cup game against Beccles Caxton which will include a voucher for a pint of 'Redgate Rangers Lager' for just 50p & £1 of the £2 admission will be donated to the NLD supported charity, Prostate Cancer UK.
