h e n a n d r e w j a c k s o n arrived at the White House for his inaugural reception, thousands of people joined him overwhelming the meager security presence, pushing through doors and windows, and suffocating the small rooms. Waiters attempted to serve trays of orange punch, but the glasses were quickly smashed, the rugs muddied, and the tables overturned. The “People’s President” left for a hotel after an hour. The crowd departed the White House only when barrels of the orange punch were opened on the lawn.
