New battle against developers as hundreds more new houses are proposed UP to 370 houses could be built on a greenfield site on the northern edge of Thornbury as developers continue to target the town. With nearly 1,000 new homes already built or approved in recent years - with others in the planning pipeline - opponents are preparing for another fight to stop the latest scheme for farmland south of Gloucester Road on the way from the town to Whitfield and the A38.
The outline application has been submitted by Bovis Homes and members of the Fear family, with two main access roads off Gloucester Road proposed to serve the site. Under the plan, there will also be a community building, allotments, play areas and a country park provided. The large rise in house building in the town is causing a large amount of concern among residents and council leaders.
Three sites at Thornbury Fields, Park Farm and Post Farm have already accounted for more than 900 homes, with a decision for further housing on land west of Gloucester Road yet to be decided. However, a proposal for up to 350 houses at Cleve Park, at the southern end of Morton Way, was refused by South Gloucestershire Council recently. Full story page 10.

Commenting on the cuts, Claire said: “Most local primary schools in this area face losing the equivalent of two teachers each and secondary schools each face losing up to 16 teachers. - but Theresa May doesn't care. “Under the Conservatives, funding per pupil is set to see the biggest cuts in a generation, while billions of pounds are being spent on divisive plans to expand grammars and free schools.”
In contrast, the Liberal Democrats have pledged an extra £26m of funding for schools across South Gloucestershire to ensure these Conservative cuts do not bite.

Tockington Manor girl Agents needed for strikes gold in schools Thornbury Library championship
A PUPIL from Tockington Manor School is celebrating after claiming a swimming gold. Rachel Shutt headed the field in Under 13 girls 50m freestyle race at the The Independent Association of Prep Schools’ national finals. The Year 8 student looked to be in second position on the first length but managed a perfect tumble turn setting her in first position for the second and final length reaching the finish with an arms length spare. THORNBURY Library is on the look out for volunteers to help run their summer reading challenge. Animal Agents is the theme of this year’s popular challenge, and those volunteers who sign up will spend their time talking to children about the books they’ve been reading and helping with a range of activities in the library. Ellie, aged 17, who volunteered last summer said: ‘Volunteering has been a really enjoyable experience. It has helped me to meet new people and develop my confidence when communicating with others.’ Martin Burton, from South Gloucestershire Council said “Volunteering for the Summer Reading Challenge gives young people a valuable opportunity to gain confidence, skills and experience which increases
employability. It’s inspiring for children to have teenager volunteers from their own community encouraging them to read.” More than 6,600 children took part in The Big Friendly Read in South Gloucestershire last summer ,helped by over 70 volunteers. The theme of this year’s challenge is Animal Agents – a whole host of clever creatures, ready to solve all kinds of mysteries. It starts on 15 July and runs until 9 September. Libraries are also holding free activities throughout the holiday. The closing date for applications is 30 June. Volunteers must be aged 13 or over. Phone scammers disrupted as they targeted elderly Thornbury woman POLICE officers intercepted a telephone scam in Thornbury involving offenders repeatedly targeting an elderly woman and trying to defraud her out of £7,000. It was just one incident of people attempting to scam pensioners which were disrupted by the Avon and Somerset force as part of a national campaign against rogue traders. Detective Superintendent Carolyn Belafonte said: “Rogue traders target the most vulnerable in our society and will use any tactic to gain their trust before stealing from them. “It’s hard to comprehend the effect these crimes have on the victims – some never recover from the horror of having their homes raided. “The aim of the week of action was to help people feel confident about dealing with strangers on their doorstep.” Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner, Sue Mountstevens, said: "Rogue traders carry out the ultimate act of betrayal. "The exploitation of people through cold-calling and distraction burglaries will not be tolerated.”
Youth project manager to address AGM of Thornbury Volunteer Centre THE project manager of youth service provider Krunch South West will be guest speaker at the annual general meeting of Thornbury Volunteer Centre. Penny Baker will talk about the role in the local community of Krunch, which has operated in Thornbury for the past four years, as well as its current projects and plans for the future. The AGM takes place from 2pm on Wednesday, July 5, in the council chamber in the town hall. Tea and cake will be served and everyone is welcome to attend. Thornbury infant school continues to provide good education to pupils AN inspector from Ofsted said the good quality of education provided at Crossways Infant School in Thornbury had been maintained since its last full check four years ago. Sheila Crew, from the education watchdog, completed the first short inspection of the school since it was judged to be good in June 2013. She said executive head teacher Mark Toogood - who is also responsible for the neighbouring Crossways Junior School - had led the school through a period of considerable change since being appointed just after the 2013 assessment. In her letter to Mr Toogood, she said he had appointed new members of the leadership team who had particular skills
and experience to improve the quality of teaching and had taken on new teachers and a number of teaching assistants. He had been well supported through the changes by school governors and had also successfully addressed most of the areas for improvement that had been previously identified. Ms Crew said attainment in writing among pupils was now good overall, procedures for keeping pupils safe were strong and governors were
knowledgeable. Children in their early years also achieved well in reading, writing and maths. In a letter to parents, Mr Toogood said: “We are all very proud of the judgements and comments that the inspector made. “There are many strengths and areas that the school does well. There are also one or two areas where we can improve. “This is as it should be. The staff and governors at Crossways
Infant School are always looking at ways we can improve the provision at the school for the children, whether that is within a particular subject or the extra activities we can offer. “We are aiming to improve further in the areas Ofsted highlighted as well as other areas we have identified and I know that this will only be possible with the continued hard work and co-operation between all members of the school community.” As the school had already been graded as good, the short inspection only looked at particular areas so did not cover all aspects of school life.
Cyber hacking attack hit appointments at Thornbury Health Centre surgery A THORNBURY GP practice has returned to normal after being hit by the cyber hacking attack that targeted the NHS. The Streamside Surgery formerly Dr Male and Partners - is based in the town’s health centre and was among a number of NHS trusts and organisations affected by the recent incident. It caused chaos for those involved, with thousands of scheduled appointments cancelled around the country. Streamside Surgery had no computer access and could only run an emergency service, cancelling all routine booked appointments and blood tests. Its patients on repeat medication who needed new supplies were able to go to pharmacies for enough medication to last for 30 days. The practice was able to offer
a limited service three days later but said the attack had caused a backlog in activities such as making appointments and printing prescriptions. A fully functional service was operating on the fourth day. Steph Celso, the practice manager, said: “There are no reports of any patient information being compromised but the practice is taking the threat very seriously. “We would like to thank patients for their co-operation and understanding.” • GP changes have been announced at the practice, with Dr Mark Thompson now retired and Dr Syed Haque leaving. Dr Fiona MacPherson has joined the practice and a new partner, Dr Martin Wicks, will join the surgery in August.

popular contestants on Strictly Come Dancing, then went on to the Armstrong Hall to give a talk about her life within and outside politics, before answering questions from the audience. Other highlights of the nine-day festival included comedy drama from the Reduced Shakespeare Company, concerts by folk singer Cara Dillon and the electric string band Stringfever, as well as a talk on genetics by leading scientist Professor Robert Winston. Lord Winston also visited the Castle School earlier on the day of his visit to talk to students. The festival committee said comments received from those attending events had indicated it was one of the best ever and a big success.

A PAINTING of Ann Widdecombe created to promote Thornbury Arts Festival and the Severn Vale Arts Trail received a seal of approval from the former Shadow Home Secretary herself. Miss Widdecombe dropped by to see the portrait in Olveston before going on to officially launch the festival. The painting was the work of village artist and art trail participant Angus Macaskill, who creates pictures when inspired by the latest news and then displays them on the gates of his Churchill House home for passers-by to see. His image of Miss Widdecombe was based on an appearance on the BBC’s Question Time programme and also featured its presenter David Dimbleby. When told about the painting, Miss Widdecombe was keen to see it so stopped off to meet Mr Macaskill ahead of her appointment in Thornbury. She said the picture was “very amusing” and happily posed alongside it. She also said

Busy time for Thornbury Brownies 4TH Thornbury Brownies have had another busy few weeks including being introduced to the world of Yoga Lattes courtesy of Natasha Johnson. The brownies enjoyed this relaxing evening (as did the leaders!) They have also had a really interesting Dementia Awareness session courtesy of Dementia Action Alliance. 4th Thornbury Brownies were also really happy to receive a visit from PCSO Tony Blackmore, who popped in to deliver some hi-viz jackets which have been donated to the unit by Avon and Somerset Police to help keep us safe when we are out and about. The Brownies recently spent a weekend at PGL Liddington
enjoying a range of outdoor activities including canoeing, raft building, zip wire, giant swing, mountain biking, den building, fire lighting, vertical challenge course, as well as some indoor activities including fencing and a disco. All the brownies enjoyed trying new things, developing their confidence and learning about being away from home. Thornbury Lions THORNBURY Lions Club has planted two trees in memory of long serving members Leon Blunos and Malcolm Gregory. The club said the hardworking members were sadly missed but the trees would be a reminder of their contribution to the organisation they supported and their communities. One of the trees, a cherry, has been planted in Severn View Road, Thornbury, to remember Mr Blunos, who is the father of celebrity chef Martin Blunos - a former pupil at the town’s Castle
School. In Alveston, a beech tree has been planted on The Green in memory of Malcolm Gregory. The Lions were helped with organising the planting by Thornbury tree warden Judith Hurford. Meanwhile, Thornbury Baptist Youth Club has benefited from the Lions’ work to support its community and now boasts a table football game that was recently donated by the organisation.

n NEWS Rockhampton ready to roll as folk festival unveils quality line-up SCARECROWS have been appearing in and around Thornbury to spread the word about Rockhampton Folk Festival. This year’s event takes place in its countryside venue on Saturday, June 17, with a line-up that includes BBC Young Folk Musician award winner Greg Russell. Greg will be appearing alongside Ray Hearne, who describes himself as a Yorkshire Irish kid. Vocal Global, gipsy swing from The Schmoozenbergs, Fife and Strum and The Hosen Ones have also been booked to appear. This year’s festival has been recognised by Arts Council England and with its support, the organisers have been able to bring top quality artists to the village. They are also supporting young musicians, with the Wriggle Jigglers and Panache steel band set to entertain festival-goers. Tickets can be bought through the festival website, with Early Bird discounts only available until May 31. They are also on sale in Surroundings in Thornbury. Gates will open at 2.30pm, with locally produced food and drink available and parking provided next to the festival site. However, anyone who cycles to the event will receive a free slice of cake as a thank-you for leaving their car at home.

New booking clerk needed as Jane steps down THE team behind a main feature of Alveston’s village life is looking for a new volunteer to fill an important role. Jane King, the booking secretary at the Jubilee Hall, is stepping down and someone is needed to take on the task. The hall was a gift to Alveston from local benefactor Edward Bush 120 years ago to celebrate Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee. It has been a successful venue for many groups and events ever since, run by dedicated volunteers. Jane has been the booking clerk for four years - taking on the job after retiring in order to help the community and stay active - but is now moving on. She said: “I have enjoyed helping out. The hall has a strong group of volunteer committee members, who all do their bit and work well together. “My role involves liaising with the groups that regularly use the hall and managing the ad-hoc bookings, from businesses to private functions, christening celebrations to wakes and more. “Most of the work can be done from home using basic computer skills, but it also includes showing around people who may wish to book either the main hall or meeting room. “We hope to find a replacement soon as I will be unable to help at the hall after the end of June due to other

PLANS for another housing estate in Thornbury have been submitted, with Bovis Homes seeking permission to build up to 370 houses off Gloucester Road on the north side of the town. The outline application, drawn up with members of the Fear family, is for the development of nearly 60 acres (24 hectares) of land stretching from Upper Morton to Crossways Lane at The Knapp. If approved, it would take development further out into the countryside towards Whitfield alongside the B4061. In documents sent to South Gloucestershire Council planners, the site is described as primarily agricultural land split into a series of medium sized fields with hedgerow boundaries and crossed by public footpaths. The proposal is to develop it with the houses, a community building, allotments, play areas and a country park. Agricultural buildings would be knocked down and two primary access roads created off Gloucester Road. The homes would be a range of types, sizes and tenures, to include up to 35 per cent affordable housing. A “comprehensive transport strategy” has been pledged, along with “on-site mitigation proposals that address potential heritage, drainage, transport and environmental concerns”. The developers said if planning consent was given, they would expect to start building in the autumn of 2018, with completion assumed in 2025. An environmental statement submitted by the applicants said: “The north and northeastern edges of Thornbury are recognised as sustainable and suitable locations for housing growth.” It estimated the scheme would provide homes for some

Decision time for Thornbury voters
JUNE 8 is decision time as the people of Thornbury go to the polls for the general election. We’ve given the four candidates running in the Thornbury and Yate constituency the chance to present their case to the voters. Here’s what they had to say.
Luke Hall, Conservative candiate As a local man, who lives in Yate and who grew up in South Gloucestershire, it has been the biggest honour of my life to represent our community in Parliament. I have strived to be an active and passionate local representative for our area, influencing the government on the issues that affect us locally. Having lived here all of my life, I have been able to make progress on the issues that matter to us, like securing £500,000 to finally kick start junction 18A onto the M4 after a 30 year delay, a project that will help relieve the congestion that has affected our communities for too long. I have also been working to secure investment into local broadband – we have seen £1.7 billion being invested in extending superfast broadband provision, with 7,398 premises being connected locally and more planned later this year. I have also been fighting to protect our local green spaces in places like Thornbury, Charfield and Coalpit Heath, and have twice ensured the Government rejected the idea of supporting a new 3,000 house ‘Garden Village’ at Buckover, sending a powerful message to the Council and Developers that these poorly made plans are not right for our area. I am pushing to see better local bus services like the 82 to Southmead Hospital and have now secured a full review of bus serves in our area, which will look at bringing the 82 back to Chipping Sodbury High Street. Locally, I have worked with the Council to secure money for local health services, like the redevelopment of Thornbury Hospital, which will see up to 80 new NHS rehabilitation and mixed use care beds and money invested into Thornbury Health Centre. On all of these issues, having a Conservative MP locally means we have influence here and in government, getting the best deal for South Gloucestershire, rather than a lone voice shouting from the side-lines. If I am re-elected as the local MP, I will be using the influence I have in Government to see these issues through. Bring back control of our public services from profit driven investors, give our children a future that will not be filled with debt from student loans or pay day loans, as they struggle to find work with over 7 million jobs predicted to be lost to mechanicalisation. We see it every day now in McDonalds, Tesco, your local petrol station, jobs that were part time or needed when you were a student or retired are now disappearing; this is real and happening now, not in 10 years. We need a Government with the vision to see that we need our education system to be changed so that you no longer teach to the test but learn life skills and plan for the job we will need in the years to come. Invest in the NHS, not sell off millions of pound worth of contracts to private companies. Bring our trains and buses back under local and national authority control. How can the Government say only they can be trusted with the economy, when they have held wages back and in real terms the UK workers are 10% worse off after 7 years and the National debt has risen from £880b to £1.7t in 7 years? Teresa May said 6 times there would not be a snap election, Jacob Reece-Mogg said ‘the Tories would appear deeply opportunistic if there was’, who do you believe?
Brian Mead, Labour candidate It is a honour to have been selected as the Labour candidate for the Thornbury and Yate constituency and I look forward to meeting as many residents as possible in the election campaign. My background is that I have lived in North Bristol and South Gloucestershire my whole life and served as a Filton Town Councillor for the past 6 years. I currently work in the security industry, having previously worked for several years on the railways where I held local, regional and national positions in the RMT union. I am an active member of UNITE the Union, the Cooperative Party where I am local Chair and I am Secretary of Bristol Speedway Supporters Club. I am standing in this election to give people the opportunity to vote for Labour's policies of investment in public services and against the austerity agenda. This government's austerity policies have left tens of thousands of low and middle income people in the Thornbury and Yate constituency worse off in real terms than they were before 2010. The Labour alternative I will be fighting for will see increased investment in the NHS, education, and social care. Creeping privatisation of the NHS will be reversed, divisive and discredited plans for grammar schools will be scrapped, and a game changing programme to build social housing will be rolled out. Zero Hours contracts will be banned and the minimum wage will be increased to £10 per hour. Liberal Democrat candidate We all know Mrs May will be Prime Minister after the election but she will not be on the ballot paper here. The real question is which of the local candidates will best stand up for our area? My record as a councillor over the last ten years shows that I am a strong voice standing up for our community. I have campaigned with local people - and won - on issues from broadband to protecting green spaces, transport to health. I have lived in the constituency for 17 years and am bringing up my family here. I spent a decade working in the software industry, including for local small businesses. So I understand the pressures on our communities. As a parent with children at local schools, I share concerns over this Government’s funding cuts. Most local primary schools face losing the equivalent of two teachers each - and secondary schools up to 16 teachers. The Government has left the local NHS chronically underfunded, with delays doubling at Southmead A & E. Its damaging approach to the Brexit negotiations is putting local jobs at risk. As your MP, I will campaign for investment in jobs and training, more funding for our schools and an extra £26m for the NHS and social care. I want to make sure we have truly affordable housing, with transport infrastructure and services to support it, without destroying our much-valued countryside. I will fight to protect the “triple lock” introduced by Steve Webb that makes sure pensions keep pace with wages and inflation. I will campaign to protect the environment and want to give the people, not politicians, the final say on the Brexit deal. The Conservative MP here voted the way the Government told him to every time. Having worked closely with Steve Webb for many years, I know what a difference a strong local MP can make. I’D like people to be alert to vehicle crime after a number of vans were broken into in one morning. Tools and equipment were taken and damage caused to the vehicles which had been parked in Midland Road and belonged to people working on a nearby building site. Tradespeople’s livelihoods rely on their tools and their vans. Call to celebrate summer Police cadets abseil for with St Peter’s Hospice Thornbury charity ST Peter’s Hospice is asking people in the Thornbury area to host their own fundraising event this summer. People are being asked to hold parties across June, July and August to raise funds for St Peter’s Hospice. Organisers say it doesn’t matter whether it is a garden party, BBQ, tea party, picnic or something else. St Peter’s Hospice Community Fundraiser Esther Hall said: “Hosting a summer party is a great way to bring friends and family together to relax, have fun and enjoy some food and drink. We encourage
people to be creative” The hospice is hoping to raise £35,000 from their summer party campaign this year. The money would pay for a Community Nurse Specialist for one year, enabling them to care for more patients in their own homes.

A GROUP of Volunteer Police Cadets have raised money for Thornbury Volunteer Centre after abseiling down Bridewell police station in Bristol. Nine teenagers and three cadet leaders from the South Gloucestershire unit took up the challenge and raised more than £600 for local charities,
including the Volunteer Centre. Cadet leader Sergeant Steve Ives said: “This was a really good event thanks to excellent support from the Avon and Somerset Police rope access team. Some of the cadets were very nervous and yet overcame their fears, all in the name of charity. We're all very proud of them.”

Thornbury Railway and Station THE railway line that ran from Thornbury to Yate, via Tytherington, was opened in 1872 after many delays and technical problems, not least Thornbury’s position at the bottom of a hill. It was eventually built with the station to the north of Thornbury Villa at the top of the town, near where Midland Way is now located. But the line always seemed to struggle to be viable economically and it closed to passengers in 1944, subsequently ceasing coal and freight traffic on June 20, 1966. One of the main entrances to the station for passengers was along the pathway that began next to what was then the last house in the High Street and part of the wall for the gateway to that path is still visible near this house, next to where the Tanners Court flats adjoin it. A map shows clearly that on the far side of the railway line was a line of trees forming the southern boundary of the railway site. These can still be seen along the side of the path when walking into the current Tesco store site. Meanwhile, the station platform was where a row of houses now stand in Midland Way - itself named after the Midland Railway Company that ran the line - and although there were sidings and a short stretch of double track as the line left the station, it soon narrowed to a single track, with the majority of the track always a single line. There was also a large turntable where the line terminated in Thornbury, which allowed the locomotive to be turned around. But there were no signals between Thornbury and Yate and the line was operated by using a gadget known as a train staff and key.
This was collected by the driver from the signal box at Yate and retained by him until his return - no driver was allowed to use the line without a staff so that accidents could not happen. This item is now in the possession of Thornbury Museum and can be seen there by prior arrangement. For much of its existence as a passenger railway, Thornbury had its own station master and Cooper Road is another of the last vestiges of the town’s railway past, named after long serving Charles Radcliffe Cooper, the station master from 1889 to 1921. Another reminder of the railway era is the road on the nearby trading estate which was named Short Way after engine driver, William Short. The presence of the railway in Thornbury also meant there was a surprising bonus for the town as the water tower at the station also helped to supply local

The performer is currently on a UK tour but is taking time out
of his schedule to visit the show. Queen of Herbs Jekka creates new garden at showground site
Own a local business?
HERB expert Jekka McVicar has designed the first specially commissioned permanent garden at the Three Counties Showground. Jekka, whose herb farm is in Alveston, created the Health and Well-being Garden for the site in Malvern, where it was opened during the recent Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Malvern Spring Festival. It will now remain for use by Pathways, a charity for adults with learning difficulties, which uses gardening and the environment to introduce young people to the working world. Schools and educational establishments will also benefit from the garden. Jekka is the RHS ambassador for health through horticulture and the garden was the focus for a Live Well Zone at the festival. Known as the Queen of Herbs, Jekka was inspired by a holistic system of healthcare known as Ayurvedic medicine when designing the elliptical garden, the features of which include a cherry tree walk edged with lavender and a tranquil seating area. Last year, Jekka designed her first feature garden at the
Chelsea Flower Show, having exhibited there for many years and winning a string of gold medals for her displays of herbs. That garden, called A Modern Apothecary and including herbs grown at her nursery, was inspired by conversations with doctors and other care professionals about the benefits of plants and gardens to people’s health. It has now been recreated at St John’s Hospice in St John’s Wood, London. Meanwhile, award winning Jekka, whose many fans include royalty and celebrity chefs, is also working on developing a roof garden for Southmead Hospital. She is also in the middle of a series of open days at her nursery in Shellards Lane, with the next on June 2 and 3, July 7 and 8 and September 1 and 2. The farm will also host an RHS open day on Saturday, August 5, and will be involved in the National Gardens Scheme open days on Sunday, August 6. Thornbury Radio set for return to airways EFFORTS are being made by a new local consortium to bring community radio back to Thornbury. A not-for-profit venture Thornbury Media Community Interest Company - has been set up to bring a radio station to the airwaves in the town. Two founder members of the original Thornbury FM, Glyn Roylance and David Wrench, are behind the venture. That station broadcast to the town from November 2005 to April 2010 before becoming GLOSS FM to reflect its greater coverage area.
A licence application was then made in 2011 to the independent communications regulator Ofcom for a permanent FM licence but there were no clear frequencies available in the area. Lack of funding eventually forced the station to close in June 2012. But discussions with Ofcom on securing an FM frequency for the area have now re-started and the consortium is also looking into web broadcasting and DAB digital platforms for the proposed station. Mr Roylance said: “Thornbury FM proved there was plenty of local talent to
produce great local radio. Although Thornbury has a strong community spirit, it does not have a local radio station to help showcase the town. “Commercial stations don’t serve Thornbury, and the BBC stations focus on their regional briefs for Bristol, Gloucester and Somerset. Paul Jones and Dave Kelly return to Sodbury MANFRED Mann frontman Paul Jones is making a welcome return to Chipping Sodbury this July. He will be joined by co vocalist Dave Kelly and the duo, founder members of The Blues Band, will be performing their live acoustic set at the Baptist Church on the evening of Friday 7th July. Since announcing the concert organisers Cotswold Edge Events have been overwhelmed by the response and the July date is well on its way to selling out. Organiser Mark Lloyd commented, 'we knew that Paul and Dave are popular but the response has been incredible, everyone is really looking
forward to the pair returning to the town.' As well as their own original material, they not only know and perform the work of the greats, ranging from Howling’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker through to Sonny Boy Williamson - they actually played alongside them, and enjoyed their friendship. Fancy life on the Ocean wave? SEA cadets in Thornbury have launched a campaign to enrol more members into the youth organisation. The town’s unit has been running for more than 20 years but its leaders said not many local children or parents were aware of its existence. Although small they said it was an active unit, meeting twice a week at its centre - TS Battleaxe - behind the Castle School sixth form site in Gloucester Road. Junior cadets, for those aged
between ten and 12, meet on Thursday evenings, while older cadets aged 12-18 have sessions on Mondays and Thursdays. All run from 7pm-9pm. The unit offers a host of activities, some of which are water-based such as sailing, kayaking and powerboating, but others include camping, abseiling and, for older cadets, the chance to go to flight school. Cadets can also learn first aid, join the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, develop a range of new skills and make new
friends. The unit leaders said a number of the water-based events took place at Saul Junction on the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal in the summer. The cadets also have roles to play at local events such as the annual Remembrance Day parades in November. Medieval Barn looks to whisk you back in time AN historic barn in Winterbourne is giving you the chance to go back to the Middle Ages with a special Medieval Fayre Living history group The Company of Chivalry will be providing a vivid display of life in a medieval encampment during the 100 Years' war. Nicholson achieves Badminton dream after overcoming serious neck injury IT took 33 years but Andrew Nicholson finally won the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials - just 21 months after escaping paralysis in a fall that left him with a broken neck. The Wiltshire-based New Zealander achieved his long deserved victory with Nereo, the 17-year-old chestnut gelding who has previously carried him to a third and sixth place at the international, as well as team bronze at the London 2012 Olympics. In emotional scenes at the end of four days of competition, fellow riders gave three cheers to the 55-year-old Kiwi, whose CV had until then failed to include the prestigious Badminton title, despite a record number of completions and finishing as close as second. Before the 2017 running, Nicholson had completed the event an incredible 35 times. This year he made that 37, with a top 12 finish on Qwanza as well as nailing the title with Nereo.

That pushed him up to third position ahead of the final showjumping, where he put the pressure on by going clear with one time fault. He then rose to the top when 2016 winners Michael Jung and La Biosthetique Sam knocked down one fence to maintain second place, while overnight leader Ingrid Klimke had a disastrous round with Horseware Hale Bob to drop to ninth position. Return to Cabinet system for council SOUTH Gloucestershire Council has reverted to a system of being run by a leader and Cabinet members - five years after the arrangement was abandoned. In the see-saw change of governance, the council has been run twice by committees and now, for the second time, by a Cabinet. The change came into effect at the council’s annual general meeting, meaning the leader and executive members will take decisions either collectively as a Cabinet or individually as executive portfolio holders. Decisions will be open to scrutiny by all of the nonexecutive councillors via a scrutiny commission. Formal appointments to the various roles were also made at the AGM, with Matthew Riddle
as council leader and Cabinet member for the local economy and devolution. Councillor Riddle represents the Severn ward, comprising the villages of Olveston, Oldburyon-Severn, Rockhampton, Hill and Aust. Toby Savage becomes deputy leader and Cabinet member for schools, skills and employment. Other portfolio holders are Ben Stokes, adult care; Jon Hunt, children and young people; Colin Hunt, planning, transportation and the strategic environment; Heather Goddard, communities and tourism; Erica Williams, housing delivery and public health, and John Goddard, corporate resources. Councillors Ian Boulton and Claire Young share the chairmanship of the scrutiny
commission. Other non-executive chairmen and women appointed to head up various roles include Marian Lewis, health scrutiny; Nick Barrett, audit and accounts; June Bamford, development control east; Trevor Jones, development control west, and Keith Cranney, regulatory committee. Separately, Yate councillor Ian Blair was appointed council chairman after a year in the role of vice-chairman. Emersons Green councillor Rachael Hunt was appointed vice chairwoman. New date set for popular Berkeley Show after two washout years hit attendance BERKELEY Show will be held on its new date in June after moving from its traditional August bank holiday place in the calendar. The popular agricultural show was badly affected by poor weather for two consecutive years, which hit attendance figures and entries, and was not held at all in 2016. But organisers were determined to keep the show going and decided to move it to Sunday, June 25, for 2017. A number of new committee members were also taken on and they hope the show, which brings in families from both the surrounding area and further afield, will be a success. The event will open

Thornbury Museum creates new guide to town’s heritage trail A NEW guide to the Thornbury Heritage Trail has been published to help people learn about the town’s history and its important features. The trail was established to mark the new millennium and follows an easy walking route around the town centre, with an optional return along country footpaths. It starts outside the town hall in High Street, where a bronze relief sculpture of the town centre is located. The feature also contains Millennium time capsules which were prepared by local schools in 2000. Bronze plaques showing the trail logo are set into the pavement and show the direction in which to go to follow the route. On country paths they are fixed into wooden posts. The trail was created by Thornbury’s museum, where copies of the new guide can be bought for £2. They are also on sale in the town hall. *The museum has just opened a new exhibition about Thornbury Castle, which will continue until December. It looks at some of the finer points of the building’s architecture and how the castle was adorned in Tudor times. It also comments on the mid-19th century restoration and shows how the castle has been represented in art and photography over the centuries.

Thornbury looking good Squash marathon set after early season games to raise funds for Ezzy THORNBURY Cricket club was celebrating a clean sweep of victories at the end of May, with all four adult teams winning. The first team moved up to fourth in the West of England Gloucester/Wiltshire Premier Division Two, with a 6-wicket victory away at the Spa ground over Gloucester City Winget. Dan Davis has started the season well with half centuries in the first few league games. The second team secured their first win of the season after some close games, the highlight being Dave Hammond’s 132 against Hatherley & Reddings.

THORNBURY Junior Squash Club are preparing to play the long game this month as they aim to raise money for Ezzy Hodge. Three year old Ezzy has Cerebral Palsy and her parents have launched a fundraising campaign to raise £80,000 for treatment in America that could help her walk. The 24 hour ‘squashathon’
at Thornbury Leisure Centre on Sat June 17. There will also be a coaching session from 10-12 to help raise funds and this can be booked via Tim Miller at timmiller177@yahoo.co.uk. South Glos man shines at Castle Coombe meeting YATE racing driver Chris Hignell has had a great start to the season in the Castle Combe Saloon Car Championship in his new Peugeot 106. At both the Easter "Howard's Day" meeting, and the May Bank holiday round, he managed third in class. With 14 points he is currently laying tenth in the championship table. Hignell is one of only a handful of racers in the UK with an MSA national B race licence, being blind in his left eye following a life threatening accident in 2008. Experience prevails in President’s Plate MEGAN O’Connor & Brendan Wilde have triumphed in Thornbury Tennic Club’s President’s Plate competition, lifting the trophy for a third consecutive year. The plate competition is an annual mixed doubles tournament for club members. 14 pairs entered the tournament and were divided into two leagues of seven pairs each. Each pair played a set against the other six pairs in their group. Points were awarded on a league basis with winners of each group playing the final and second place in each group having a playoff for third place. The weather was very windy, making playing conditions challenging, but made little difference to O’Connor and Wilde, as well as Suzie Newman and Nick Mason. The two couples won won all their sets in the first league before facing each other in the final league match with a place in the final at stake. O’Connor and Wilde won a tight set 6-2. The second group was also very close with two pairs, Carole Boulton and Malcolm Worster and Jo Hargreaves and Felix Boyes, winning 5 out of 6 sets. The winner of the group was ultimately decided on count back of game scores in each set.

The final was played on the main show court. Megan & Brendan ultimately proved too strong for Carole & Malcolm and won 6-3, 6-2. This was the third consecutive year they have won the tournament.
The play off for third place was another close encounter: Jo and Felix beat Suzie and Nick 6-2, 7-6 (10-8 in a tie break). In all, 46 sets of tennis were played including 435 games across 6 courts. Wimbledon Draw The day concluded with
the ballot for the 19 pairs of Wimbledon tickets allocated to club members. The draw included several tickets to Centre Court, including the Ladies Final. The lucky winners can now look forward to their trip to Wimbledon in July.
