Thornbury Town v Patchway Town

EDITOR'S NOTES Good evening and welcome to tonight's GFA Challenge Trophy match against Patchway Town. I've lost track of how many times tonight's game was postponed in December. Thankfully we're now having some better weather, so we can get some games played. A well fought win against Malmesbury on Saturday means we keep up in the race for the title and with games in hand we're in a great place.

Apart from the league, the GFA Cup is now our only shot at some silverwave this season. So I'm sure the team will be up for tonight's game against our local rivals. Patchway Town currently sit at the bottom of the County League table, but we can't afford to be complacent as our visitors will be relishing testing themselves against a higher level opponent. The winner of the tie will play Cribbs Reserves in a couple of weeks time. Enjoy the game! Tom Shorey Programme Editor

THORNBURY TOWN CLUB HISTORY

It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s. Mundy Playing Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77. The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 198990 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received. During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final

4

of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final. In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League. Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed. Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous

winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history. 2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football. In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin.

The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continues to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17. 2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in our history. Our first season in the Hellenic League saw us finish a creditable 3rd in Div 1 West and win the Supplementary Cup. With a new management team of Jason Rees and Gary Kemp in place we look forward to the season ahead and wish all teams the best of luck in their endeavours.

PATCHWAY TOWN CLUB HISTORY

The Club was formed in 1958 mainly by ex pupils of the local high school and some local people from the Parish and started life as Old Patchwegians. The Club made rapid progress over the seasons and by the end of the 1967-68 season headed the Bristol & District League. In 1968 the Gloucestershire County Football League was formed and the Club were elected as one of the founder members. The Club found it difficult in the early years with Clubs like Forest Green Rovers—Bristol St George and Mangotsfield as opposition. In the mid seventies the Club moved ground to Scott Park this was due to the demise of Patchway United. The Club then changed its name to Patchway Town In 1982 the Club had its poorest season and were relegated. During this period a new Clubhouse was under construction and volunteers from both the Football Club and the Cricket Club were instrumental in its opening. At the same time Mr Bill Bonds was engaged as manager and set about reviving the Clubs fortunes. The Club quickly returned to the Gloucestershire County Football League and won the Championship in 1986-87 and again in 199192 but shortly afterwards manager Billy Bonds

8

lost his fight against a serious illness. In the mid nineties Kevin Horseman took charge and introduced his own brand of skill and professionalism and the Club has not looked back since. Kevin was a skilful and powerful forward and successfully transferred this to his players and his and the Club record is there for all to see. 1 Championship title and 1 Runners-up - 3 League Cup wins and 2 GFA Cup Runners-up. Kevin Horseman retired at the end of 2012-13 season and this opened the door for Dean Horseman to take on the first team management roll. Dean picked up a lot of experience having worked as assistant manager to the first team for a number of seasons. He brought his own ideas to the team and was as passionate about the Club as anyone. Dean brought with him ex-player Craig Moore as his assistant. Craig was an excellent player and is well respected member at the Football Club. Unfortunately Dean left the Club earlier this season and with a number of players also exiting it has been a struggle to survive over the last few months but the Club has engaged Karl Trotter as the new manger and he has brought some new faces to the club and although recent result have improved there have not been many wins but it has been encouraging.

GUEST ARTICLE

BY JON COUCH Did you see the video of the Arsenal FC ‘superstars’ captured at Norwich City before christmas? If not, let me enlighten you. In it was a young mascot, about nine or ten years old, leaning against the wall opposite to Arsenal’s dressing room entrance. There he stood, in awe, as the likes of PierreEmerick Aubameyang, Mesut Ozil, Alexandre Lacazette, Callum Chambers and Shkodran Mustafi walked right past him in a line without any recognition or so much as a second glance. Not a smile, gentle ruffle of the hair, fist pump, nothing! While social media went into meltdown, neither the players mentioned nor Arsenal FC – a club so proud of its community links – remained tight-lipped, seemingly unaware of the damage that such an apathetic act of human disparity can do – especially when you’re being paid a handsome £350,000-a-week! In fairness, it’s not just the players at Arsenal, similar complaints have been levied at toplevel players, which I why I loved the twitter response to the furore from Chris Ottaway. Chris is the chairman of the newly-reformed Epping Town FC, who ply their trade in the Essex Olympian Football League – the 11th tier of English football and, although just 18 miles away as the crow flies, light years away from the bolted confines of the Emirates

Stadium. Mr Ottaway tweeted: “Absolute disgrace. I am the Chairman of Epping Town FC. You are most welcome to be our match day mascot at a game of your choice. Bring you parents, family and friends with you and be in the presence of great footballers who are nice men at the same time. DM me if interest.” Isn’t that what Non-League football is about? Isn’t that the sole reason why you are reading this column right now, presumably at your local club having paid a mere few quid for the privilege? Of course, the argument to counteract ours will consist of quips like “but we’re watching world class players and you’ve following the butcher, baker and candlestick maker. True, we might well be, but, personally, I’d much rather enjoy watching a wholeheartedlycompetitive, pure game of football played in the right sprit – and then meet the players and managers for a Coca-Cola afterwards! And with no VAR to boot! It’s why there will always be a place for NonLeague football and long may it continue. The poor young Norwich fan may have missed out of his big opportunity to get a glance of a ‘superstar’, but he has inadvertently highlighted the overriding notion of what makes our game great. Good on you, young man!

If your child is interested in being a mascot at a future game, speak to a committee member or get in touch on social media!

HEREFORD PEGASUS 2 SIRRELL (2)

THORNBURY TOWN 1 LANCASTLE Thornbury's trip up to Hereford saw them face top side Pegasus who had continued to play at their excellent new 4G facility despite the recent rain affecting other clubs. Thornbury had not played for a month and looked rusty, failing to look after the ball well, but did have the first chance of the match when Tom Webb found Craig Lancastle whose shot in turn could only find the foot of the post. A couple of Town chances did come and go Jacob Farthing shooting straight at Powell in the home goal and a Franklin free-kick to the left of the 18 yard box was punched clear. So, the first half hour fairly even but all that changed soon after when firstly an excellent strike from Zac Sirrell found the top corner from 25 yards and then four minutes later his free-kick from the edge of the box was deflected off the wall into the bottom corner to double his & Hereford's tally. Franklin had the chance to halve the deficit just before the break but his free-kick was straight at Powell so the sides turned round at 2-0 to the home side. Midfielder Rhys Hodgson replaced right-back Dan Parry as Thornbury switched formation from 4-4-2 to 3-5-2 and this paid off almost immediately when a Farthing run saw him pulled back on the edge of the box. Lancastle stepped up and his shot found the bottom corner.

24

Thornbury Town v Patchway Town

He could have made it two on the hour mark but couldn't get the ball out of his feet and the opportunity went begging. Thornbury were now the better side although a string of corners failed to produce a chance and an effort from Joe Guest was wide of the mark and he picked up a yellow card shortly afterwards for a late tackle. Hereford introduced another lively forward on 70 minutes but the pace of Sage & Guest dealt with any danger 76' saw a double substitution from Thornbury with Lancastle & Franklin replaced by Viner and new signing Fraser Moss from Tytherington. The last quarter of an hour saw chances for both sides with Brandon Benjamin forcing a corner from his and Harry Brock shooting over after a long run. The four minutes of added time were whittled away by Hereford and they were unsurprisingly delighted when the final whistle blew. Thornbury had edged the second half but Hereford Pegasus are too good a side to give a 2-0 lead to. They now have a ten point lead at the top of the table but Thornbury have five games in hand but with the chasing pack closing up and the bottom clubs improving week on week the points in the bag look useful.

Saturday 4th January - Uhlsport Hellenic League Div 1 West

THORNBURY TOWN 4 LANCASTLE (3), H. BROCK

MALMESBURY VICTORIA

2

PACKER, WITT Thornbury were looking to bounce back after defeat the week before and start the New Year with a win against fourth placed Malmesbury. Captain Toby Bennett was back after his one week ban with Joe Guest missing out for the same reason and Town reverted to 4-4-2, Pete Fowler making his first start of the season at the heart of defence. Things didn’t quite go to plan when Malmesbury scored after only six minutes - a quality chipped ball found a forward whose cross was met by a shot that hit the post only for the rebound to be slotted home by Kyle Witt. Both sides had a couple of chances before on the quarter hour a weak clearance was headed back into the danger area by Wormwell and Lancastle rounded the keeper for one-one. Half way through the half Malmesbury re-took the lead with a header from Jamie Packer and things would have been a lot worse if Kurtis Parkin hadn’t produced the save of the match ten minutes later. As it was, on 40 minutes, Brock rescued a long ball, laid it back to Tom Webb whose cross was headed home by Lancastle for his second equaliser.

26

Thornbury Town v Patchway Town

A few minutes later a challenge on Nathan Sage saw the physio on and after lengthy treatment he was unfortunately off with a knee impact injury to be replaced by Mark Viner. The resulting 10th minute of stoppage time saw Lancastle’s shot find its way through a crowded box and into the bottom corner for his hat-trick and a slightly undeserved 3-2 lead at half-time. The second half was just as action packed but without the goals – Thornbury had one disallowed for offside after Lancastle’s free-kick came back off the crossbar and the Thornbury physio was busy early in the half. A couple of Bennett chances went begging and Brock failed to take advantage of a one on one with the keeper but on 67 minutes Thornbury doubled their lead when Lancastle’s through ball was latched onto by Brock who this time made no mistake. In the last minute a Franklin run and pull back found Bennett who failed to find the target and once again ended the game with more yellow cards than goals! A deserved win over the 90 minutes against a side who will be in the mix for promotion at the end of the season.
