Advance voting still available in Thompson Thompson residents looking to get a head start on the Sept. 10 provincial election can do so for two more days, since advance voting polls are open until Sept. 5.

Eligible voters can cast their ballots at either the City Centre Mall or the returning office on Selkirk Avenue located next to Moore Specs. The returning office will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., while advance voting at City Centre is available during the mall’s regular business hours.

Elsewhere in the Thompson electoral district, residents of Nelson House and Gillam can vote at the Gilbert McDonald Arena and the Gillam Recreation Centre, respectively, on Sept 4.

All advance voting times outside of Thompson run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

In the Thompson riding, voters get to pick between four candidates: Kelly Bindle (Progressive Conservatives), Danielle Adams (NDP), Darla Contois (Liberals) and Meagan Jemmett (Green Party).

All four candidates are invited to a Sept. 4 debate in Thompson, which is taking place at the MaMow-We-Tak Friendship Centre between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Adams, Bindle and Jemmett have confirmed that they will be participating.

‘It would help keep qualified doctors here if they had a better facility:’ Green candidate Meagan Jemmett

The Green Party of Manitoba candidate for the Thompson electoral division is Meagan Jemmett, who grew up in Halifax, Nova Scotia and attended the University of Alberta and then law school at the University of Toronto. She is currently working as a partner at Jemmett Jack Barristers & Solicitors.

How long have you been living in Thompson?

It’ll be three years in January What do you do for a living?

I came here for work. I wanted to do criminal defence law. I found an opportunity in Thompson that offered me that.

If elected, what are the biggest issues that you want to tackle in the upcoming term?

Health care is in a huge crisis and I’m a Green candidate so I have to talk about the climate emergency and I think there’s opportunity there to address those two problems together, especially in Thompson. Our health care infrastructure here, it’s in really

saves on emissions to get them there. If we build a new facility that’s energy-efficient and that’s appropriate for the weather and the realities of Thompson, that’s a major investment. It would help keep qualified doctors here if they had a better facility to work out of and there was more that they could do in the community. It would obviously create jobs building such a facility and it would help keep people here. So many people in Thompson have had to leave because they have a chronic health condition, which means that they can’t live here anymore, sometimes in the community where they spent all their lives. That’s terrible and that shouldn’t be happening.

How do you plan on representing northern interest in the Manitoba legislature?

Every election season it seems that the major parties … send their leader up north for an appearance and they talk about all these great things they’re going to do for us and then when that party gets into power they suddenly discover that the previous party has left it in

such poor financial shape they can’t possibly do all these initiatives. The money and the votes are in Winnipeg. So even an MLA from Thompson isn’t really going to be allowed to push northern interests. The Greens don’t do that.

As long as you stick to the basic principles of the Green Party you can advocate for your electoral division as much as you want Why should someone vote for you over one of the other candidates?

I vote Green knowing full well that they’re probably not going to win. It sends a signal to the major political parties. If you vote for a candidate that has little chance of winning … it encourages major parties to rethink their approach.

If Green ideas are taking away votes from the major parties those major parties are going to look at Green ideas and look at ways of adopting those ideas into their own platforms.

What’s the most difficult thing about campaigning?

It’s completely outside of my comfort zone. That said, it in-

volves a similar skill set to what I do now. It’s all about advocacy.

I’ve never done this before, but I’ve been so grateful for the reception that I’ve gotten. Even going door to door, people are so nice, so courteous and excited about not just having the usual two candidates to choose from.

Anything else you want to add?

I voted for the Green Party for the last several elections. I suppose I’d seen a lot more news about the climate crisis and I was feeling helpless. I was disappointed in the major political parties’ approaches to it. They’re not taking it seriously enough. Their policies are not going to stop what’s happening to our climate so I joined the Green Party.

Find a knife – report it, police advise

Discarded or hidden knives may be evidence in criminal investigations and should be reported to police, says Thompson RCMP detachment Staff Sgt. Chris Hastie.

The Thompson Citizen received an email from a concerned resident saying that people who spend time walking around town had reported seeing knives – usually steak knives or kitchen knives – discarded or hidden near sidewalks and paths and were unsure of what to do when such sightings occurred.

“Any discarded or hidden knives should be reported to the RCMP,” Hastie said Aug. 29. “We actually seize a lot of discarded weapons and knives and usually retain these items for at least 30 days for evidentiary purposes in case they could be related to a crime.”

The person who emailed the Citizen said that a majority of the knives found in public seemed to be in the area around St. Lawrence Catholic Church on

the corner of Cree Road and Deerwood Drive.

Father Guna Sekhar of St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church said he and others have found knives in and around the church’s parking lot and grounds, and that usually they would be picked up and discarded. A Citizen reporter found one in the same area Aug. 22.

People associated with the Lutheran-United Church at the intersection of Caribou Road and Deerwood Drive have often found knives and sharped objects around the church’s ground over the past several years. As far back as 2011, the board of the church, which was St. John’s United Church at that time, reported finding potential weapons like golf clubs, hammers and sharpened sticks on the property, as well as drug paraphernalia and used condoms.

On Aug. 17, a 22-yearold man from The Pas was stopped by community safety officers in Thompson for urinating in public and arrested under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act. A

steak knife was found in his possession and he was arrested by Thompson RCMP for possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace and subsequently remanded into custody.

There have been at least six stabbing incidents, some involving multiple victims, in Thompson since May 30.

This steak knife was lying on the ground near St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church on Aug. 22.

19-year old suspect charged in Shamattawa homicide Shamattawa RCMP and RCMP Major Crime Services said Aug. 29 that they have made an arrest in connection with an Aug. 27 death of a 24-year-old man.

Dural Miles, 19, is charged with manslaughter and three counts of breach of recognizance and was remanded into custody until a scheduled appearance in Thompson provincial court Aug. 29.

The victim was brought to the community’s nursing station Aug. 27 and later died.

RCMP were called to the nursing station around 6:15 a.m. that morning.

Shamattawa First Nation Chief Eric Redhead said Aug. 27 that the victim was employed by the First Nation.

“He had a lot of friends and was very active in Shamattawa,” said Redhead. “Our community is going through a great loss at this time.”

RCMP Major Crime Services and forensic identification units from Winnipeg and Thompson are assisting the ongoing investigation. Redhead said local crisis teams and other resources were being deployed to help residents affected by the man’s death.

Shamattawa is located about 360 kilometres east of Thompson.

13-year-old shot, 15-year-old charged in Norway House A Norway House shooting involving up to five youths left a 13-year-old hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries Aug. 28.

Norway House RCMP were notified around 5 p.m. Wednesday that a male youth had been shot on Kistapinan Drive.

The victim was transported to hospital and subsequently to Winnipeg for further treatment. He remains in hospital in stable condition.

The suspects had fled the scene prior to police arriving but investigation identified five youths who may have been involved. Three of them – a 15-year-old male and two females, aged 13 and 14, were located and arrested. The male was charged with aggravated assault, discharging a firearm with intent, pointing a firearm and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose. The two females were released without charges.

Liberal candidate Darla Contois was not sure when she spoke to the Citizen last week if her schedule would allow her to attend. The two main contenders will likely touch on a number of their respective

parties’ talking points – lower taxes and less red tape for the PCs, better health care and jobs for the NDP – but will also hopefully expound upon how they will represent Thompson in Winnipeg if they get elected, and not the other way around.

While the ideal of a parliamentary system is independent representatives of all of a country or province’s regions governing by compromising with each other, the reality is parties dominated by the leader acting in concert to enact the policies that he (or sometimes she) and a select group of his most trusted team members (the cabinet), have decided are the most important. If the Thompson electoral division elects Bindle, its residents will most likely have a representative in government, but quite possibly only a foot soldier. He wasn’t a member of cabinet in his first term, so there’s a good chance he

won’t be in a hypothetical second, depending on how many seats the PCs capture if they do succeed in being re-elected. If voters opt for Adams, they may have a more influential voice in the party to advocate for their interests, but that voice will likely be one on the opposition benches, and not holding the reins of power.

Were voters to pick one of the other two candidates, that person would certainly be more influential within their respective party, given that they would likely make up as much as half or even the whole caucus, but the degree to which they can effect actual change would be all but nonexistent.

Deciding who to cast your ballot for can sometimes be a matter of principle.

If you believe that lower taxes and a better business climate are the most important policies a government can enact, or that its role is to rein in the excesses of

capitalism in order to ensure that its benefits are spread more equally, your choice has probably already been made. If you view the decision as more dependent on practicality (a swing voter is the common term), you will have to choose between hoping to achieve regional ambitions from within the power structure or by exerting pressure from outside. One isn’t necessarily more effective than the other. A lot can depend on the qualities the person in the role possesses. Cast your ballot in advance polls that are open until 8 p.m.

Boreal Discovery Centre organizing Family Feud and farmer’s market in September sell their produce and artisan crafts directly to the public.

“We learned that our northern produce growers can lose their crops in a heartbeat, so we need a backup plan,” she said.

“Last year we went four days which was a ridiculous amount of time in hindsight.

So we’re going to be running it over two days just to make it run a little smoother and tighter.”

The deadline to register for this event is Sept. 6.

All the money generated from these two fundraisers will help pay for several of the Boreal Discovery Centre’s ongoing projects, including Jasyn Lucas’ new sturgeon mural and a pair of wheelchair accessibility ramps for the building’s entrances.

Byer said she’s also excited to see how the Boreal Discovery Centre’s programming will evolve over the next couple months now that they’ve hired an executive director for the first time since they rebranded back in 2011.

As the summer winds down in Thompson, the Boreal Discovery Centre is prepping for their upcoming fall fundraisers.

On Sept. 6, the organization will be hosting a game of Family Feud at the MaMow-We-Tak Friendship Centre.

The event is being run

by Amazing Entertainment out of Winnipeg and will give participants the chance to win a variety of prizes, including a free dinner for eight at River View Restaurant.

Board member Penny Byer says this game won’t stray too far from the traditional Family Feud formula, although it will feature some categories that are specific to Northern Manitoba.

This evening will begin with a pickerel dinner around 6:30 p.m., followed by the game itself.

The next weekend – Sept.

13-14 – Boreal board members will give their farmer’s market a second try.

As per tradition, the United Steelworkers (USW) Local 6166 hosted their annual Labour Day barbecue at the Thompson union hall Sept. 2.

Just like in previous years, union members celebrated this national holiday by handing out free food to the public and organizing activities for local youth like a potato sack race.

What made this year’s picnic different from recent iterations is that it took place a week before locals will head to the polls to decide who will represent them in the Manitoba Legislature.

As such, NDP candidate Danielle Adams and current Progressive Conservative candidate Kelly Bindle made an appearance to try

In many ways, their short speeches served as a preview for Wednesday night’s debate at the Ma-Mow-WeTak Friendship Centre, with Bindle repeating the PC talking point about how the current government inherited a “mess” from the NDP three years ago.

“Since then we have reduced taxes, cut ambulance fees and we are the only province in Canada that has lowered wait times over the last three years,” he said.

Despite receiving scattered boos and jeers from the union crowd, Bindle implored onlookers to think carefully about who they want in office for the next four years.

“A vote for NDP will take us back to higher taxes and poorer services,” he said.

Meanwhile, Adams received a much warmer reception when she talked about why Labour Day is so important.

“We need to take the time to acknowledge the role organized labour has played in providing the lifestyles which we enjoy: a living wage, a reasonable worklife balance, a safe and healthy work environment, job security and the ability to plan for our future,” she said.

But Adams also said that their fight is not over, since she believes that right-wing governments, represented by politicians like Bindle and Manitoba PC party leader Brian Pallister, are attempting to undermine the modern labour movement.

“This is part of the reason why I decided to stand for office, because of Pallister’s attacks on nurses, on teachers, on front line workers and labour in general,” she said. “I watched as Kelly Bindle said absolutely nothing while 500 union jobs left our community, when he supported the government cronies that pitted union against union in an attempt to destabilize the solidarity of our brothers and sisters.”

Both Bindle and Adams will have the opportunity to discuss these issues in more detail during Wednesday night’s debate at the MaMow-We-Tak Friendship Centre, which is set to run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Candidates representing the Manitoba Liberals (Darla Contois) and the Green Part of Manitoba (Meagan Jemmett) have also been invited to take part in this Sept. 4 event.

Advance voting is still available in Thompson until Sept. 5. Locals can cast their ballot at either the City Centre Mall or the returning office on Selkirk Avenue located next to Moore Specs.

Emma Tomchuk and Emma Deibert dedicated most of their summer vacation to athletic development, playing for Basketball Manitoba’s under-16 and under-17 provincial teams, respectively.

Following an intense tryout session in late May, which featured more than 300 athletes from across the province, these two R.D. Parker Collegiate students made the cut and would serve as practice players for their teams through the next three months in

Winnipeg.

At first, the pair said they were a little intimidated by this setup, since their fellow participants far exceeded them in skill and, in Tomchuk’s case at least, size.

“At first I didn’t know what to expect,” said Tomchuk, who was the only Northern Manitoban on this year’s U16 team. “I just knew I had to work hard if I wanted to compete with those girls, because a lot of them play club basketball, which is all year round.”

Thankfully, both Deibert and Tomchuk said

their teammates and the coaching staff were very welcoming and more than willing to help them elevate their game throughout those three months.

“Sometimes I felt a little bit out of my element,” said Deibert. “But I was just so glad to be there, so glad to experience and to learn and be around that high level of basketball.”

The RDPC students said this higher compete level eventually paid off, since they both walked away from this program in August with a few new tricks up their sleeves.

Thompson Citizen photos by Kyle Darbyson Northern motorsport enthusiasts tore up Thompson’s off-road track Aug. 31-Sept. 1 for the Northern Manitoba Off-Road Association’s (NMORA) 10th annual mud bogs.

Over 20 participants tried their luck at traversing a 200-foot mud pit using either their side-by-sides, ATVs or modified trucks.

The organizers eventually crowned a winner based on who could cross this mud pit the fastest or who could make it the furthest if all the drivers in their respective category got stuck.

The Cross Lake Islanders refused to lose in game four of their midget AA league playoff final series on the road against the Thompson King Miners March 16, twice coming back to tie the game before taking the series three games to one on an overtime goal about seven minutes into overtime.

Armando Evans, Drayden Garrick, Morgan McKay, Dallas Muskego and Kadin Ross had the goals for the Islanders, who opened the scoring in the first before giving up three goals to Matthew Rempel, Kale Mayor and Conroy Halcrow of Thompson in the first four minutes of the second period to trail 3-1. Muskego’s goal made it a one-goal King Miners lead heading into the third period.

The King Miners were less than five minutes from forcing a fifth and deciding game in the series when the Islanders tied the game. A little over a minute later, however, Drayden Jobb put Thompson back on top 4-3.

But Cross Lake refused to accept defeat, and took just 22 seconds to tie the game once again on a goal by McKay, setting the stage for overtime heroics.

Shots in the game were 33-25 in favour of the King Miners, who got 28 saves from Skylar Szocs, while Peter Ross stopped 21 in Cross Lake’s net to give his team the win and the league championship.

The Islanders took the series lead with a 7-6 overtime victory in game three of the series in Cross Lake March 11 after having opened it with a 5-4 victory two days earlier. The King Miners won game two 5-3 on March 10.

God’s Lake First Nation, located on Elk Island in Gods Lake, northeast of God’s Lake Narrows, has declared a state of emergency after four deaths by suicide and 22 attempts over the summer.

Four deaths by suicide and 22 attempts by youth this summer have prompted God’s Lake First Nation Chief Gilbert Andrews to declare a state of emergency. “We have been dealing with an ongoing crisis in our community every day this summer,� said Andrews in an Aug. 29 press release sent out by Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO), a political advocacy group that represents about 30 Northern Manitoba First Nations. “There have been four young people who have taken their own lives this summer.

This is a crisis that our health staff are dealing with every day and we need help immediately.�

The community, located about 1,000 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg and with a population of less than 1,000 people according to the 2016 census, is dealing with a methamphetamine crisis as well as addictions to alcohol and other drugs. “We are planning a community meeting next week to discuss the issue and to work on a plan of action on how we can work together to alleviate these concerns,� said Andrews. “We look forward to receiving expert assistance from our partners. We must develop a comprehensive plan in partnership with the federal government, otherwise this crisis will continue, and we will continue to experience tragedy and trauma.�

MKO Grand Chief Garrison Settee said his organization was sending its mobile crisis response team to the community on Thursday. “MKO is deeply concerned about this crisis and is working closely with God’s Lake at this time,� said Settee. “We have called on officials with the government of Canada to ensure the community receives proper resources such as qualified therapists.�

Lutheran-United Church is 60 years strong On the weekend of Sept.

21-22, the Lutheran-United Church will be celebrating 60 years as a part of the community of Thompson.

To help celebrate, Rev. Leslie Elizabeth King will return to lead in a special worship service.

The Lutheran-United Church originally began in 1959 as St. John’s United Church. In December 2012,

an ecumenical shared ministry was formed between that congregation and the Advent Lutheran congregation and became known as the Lutheran-United Church of Thompson. The joint congregation continues to be active under the direction of a committed group of volunteers, lay leaders, sacraments elders and visiting clergy. We strive to provide

worship services, the sacraments, weddings, funerals, community events and rental space for the people of Thompson and area.

On Saturday, Sept. 21, a pancake breakfast and meetand-greet for Rev. Leslie King will be held at the church at 52 Caribou Road.

This will be from 10 a.m. to noon at a cost of $5 for anyone over 12 and a silver

collection for 12 and under.

This casual event will be a chance for anyone to come mingle, reminisce and enjoy some good food to start off their weekend.

On Sunday, Sept. 22, a special worship service with communion will take place at 10:30 a.m. with a potluck lunch to follow. All are welcome to come and join in one or both events!

Elder abuse prevention and education conference coming to Northern Manitoba

The Pas, Flin Flon, Snow Lake and Thompson will each host one-day conferences in late September and early October with speakers from Age and Opportunity Support Services for Older Adults.

The conference is aimed at raising awareness of the causes, prevention, signs and correction of abuse of older adults. Participation at these conferences is restricted to people age 55 and older with the hope that

participants can become advocates for their peers in their own communities.

Local resources and provincial contacts will be made available to participants at The Pas on Sept.

30, Flin Flon on Oct. 1, Snow Lake on Oct. 2, and in Thompson on Oct. 3.

In Thompson, a committee made up of members of the Thompson Seniors Community Resource Council, the Thompson Seniors Committee (responsible for last year’s meetings) and members of

Reporting to program Director and working within an integrated multi-disciplinary team and in partnership with other service providers, nurses are required to provide services to adult clients seeking addiction treatment. This position requires a commitment to a client-centered philosophy and approach to the development, provision and support of AFM programs and services.

RESPONSIBILITIES: • Assessment of clients medical needs upon intake.

• Provides ongoing assessment of clients for signs of withdrawal • Implements the planned medical care of clients including all aspects of nursing procedures and therapies.

• Responds to medical emergencies.

• Ordering, preparing and monitoring the use of prescribed and over the counter medications.

• Maintains medical portions of client files.

• Networking and liaising with the medical community regarding clients pre-treatment, treatment and post treatment medical needs.

• Develop and deliver health related education programs.

• Individual and group counselling.

• Assists in orientation of new personnel to medical processes.

• Responds to crisis situations including suicide calls.

• Meets administrative requirements with respect to correspondence, statistics, activity reports, attendance.

• Demonstrates the ability to operate Microsoft software applications, internet and email communications.

• Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: Registered and licensed to practice in Manitoba with a Bachelor of Nursing (BN), Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) or Registered Nurse (RN). A minimum of one year experience with individual and group counselling; minimum two years nursing experience; proven knowledge of current nursing theory and practice; possess a valid Certificate; excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills contributing to a positive multidisciplinary team environment are essential. Knowledge of the addictions field and experience in mental health is considered an asset. An understanding of, and sensitivity to, working with culturally diverse populations is essential. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, French will be considered an asset.
