A new logo for the Manitoba Games and fundraising targets for the 2018 games in Thompson were unveiled at the Ma-MowWe-Tak Centre May 26 as the Thompson host society welcomed volunteers and staff from here and around the province to Thompson for a host tour to prepare and plan for next year’s games. “The games will have a new look going into Thompson as Sport Manitoba unveils its new logo for the 2018 Manitoba Winter Games powered by Manitoba Hydro,” said Sport Manitoba’s senior manager for the games Pat Kirby as he revealed the new games logo and the Thompson 2018 logo. “The new logo prominently figures Manitoba Hydro’s signature blue representing their ongoing support as title sponsor of the games while still carrying over the pieces of the past with the gold symbol from the previous Manitoba Games logo. Today marks the beginning of the Manitoba Games powered by Manitoba Hydro.” Former mayor Tim Johnston, who is chairing the Friends of the Games fundraising arm of the society with Sya Gregovski, said that their goal is to raise $100,000 for operating costs, $75,000 for capital projects and another $50,000 in additional fundraising. He also said that there have already been contributions. “I was told a long time ago by a guy who mentored me in getting involved in fundraising that you never get anywhere unless you’re fully invested,” said Johnston. “One of the first persons I spoke to was Mayor [Dennis] Fenske. The first

His cheque will be one of the first cheques in so a round of applause for the mayor. He’s fully invested.” Pointing out that being invested is not about how much you give but about giving and being involved, Johnston then passed a couple of commemorative cups from the 1994 Manitoba Games that Thompson hosted to begin fundraising efforts. “I want everyone to go into their pants pockets for their wallet and I’m going to give you a break. the lowest denomination you have. I don’t care if it’s a loonie, a toonie, a $5 – Pat, I hear it’s a $20 for you but I want everyone to give.” Other contributions already received include $12,879.78 from the
Thompson Community Foundation through the Moffat Foundation for the purchase of bleachers for the Bill Comaskey Wellness Centre and $3,594.31 from the former Winterfest committee. The Thompson Rotary Club will also donated the proceeds from this year’s million-dollar-holein-one fundraiser. Unlike most Manitoba Games, Johnston said, the Thompson games include a nickel sponsorship level at $25,000 and Vale has already committed to providing that level of support. “One of the first people I spoke to when it was announced we had the games was Mark Scott,” Johnston said. “We had a few conversations about it. He sat down with his management team here. They had some conversations with Sudbury, Toronto and at the
