The 10 people who will carry the Roly McLenahan Torch as part of the 2017 Canada Games torch relay when it passes through Thompson July 6 were revealed May 11 at the Manitoba Hydro office in Thomson. The torchbearers are Conroy Halcrow, Megan Szabo, Caroline Winship, Madison Humby, Taylor Kristjanson, Tyson Mosiondz, Stuart Walter, Eve Spence, Jennifer Montgomery and Sandra Ross-Hitch. Jodi Skibinksi of the Manitoba Hydro torch relay committee organizing the festivities in Thompson introduced each of the successful applicants, three of whom were unable to attend the introduction event. “Conroy [Halcrow] has been playing hockey since he was in novice and has grown into a substantial young man,” said Skibinski. “He is very dedicated to his hockey, from getting up at five in the morning to attend practice during school days and spending many hours at the outdoor rink.” “Megan [Szabo] is an honour roll with distinction student at Westwood Elementary School,” said Skibinski. “Megan has been skating since she was three years old. Megan has set goals for herself and she wants to be one of the participants to represent Norman region in the pre-novice ladies figure skating event in the Winter Games next year in Thompson.” “Caroline [Winship] homeschools four of her children and is the first homeschool teacher in Canada to have a fully funded applied behaviour analysis program in her home for her autistic son,” Skibinski says. “She is regular speaker at Manitoba As-

Caroline experiences great physical pain every day but she keeps a beautiful smile on her face while desperately wanting to make Thompson a better place to live.” “Madison [Humby] is unable to walk but would run for anyone that knows her,“ said Skibinski. “With her spirit she would be athletic person. We always say she runs miles every day, just doesn’t move anywhere. She is always out in the community for any events that are happening and loves to be around people.” “Taylor [Kristjanson] has a strong passion for hockey and in the off-season she

enjoys running, training and various outdoor activities,” Skibinski said. “Taylor dedicates most of her time to studies, hockey and family. There have been many challenges throughout Taylor’s life which her nominator believes have contributed to her becoming a strong and more determined young lady.” “Tyson [Mosiondz] is ambitious and leads by example,” said Skibinski. “He participates in track and field and weightlifting and stated the gym and the track are his second home. Tyson also serves as a Métis youth representative on the provincial youth council.” “Stuart [Walter] is a news reporter and every day he works hard to share the stories of those in our community,” said Skibinski. “When it comes to community events he is always at almost everything to make sure it gets

covered and information is out there on events. There is nothing more important to local radio than local events and that’s what the Canada Games are and that’s what sports are about.” “Eve [Spence] has been involved in traditional ceremonies and remains active in maintaining a healthy lifestyle,” said Skibinski. “She was the athlete of the year in her high school and was captain of her basketball team and Eve is set to graduate in June 2018.” “Jennifer [Montgomery] has resided in Northern Manitoba for 23 years,” said Skibinski. “She is a member of the local Metis Federation Thompson local. She has coached girls’ minor soccer and participated in various sports in the community. She raised her son in Thompson and he has recently returned to Thompson to pursue em-

ployment with Vale. She has had the opportunity to become involved with the Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries and additional retail outlets, which has allowed her to meet various people throughout the north.” “Sandra [Ross-Hitch] remembers being in the Canada Summer Games when she was 18 living in her birth town of Thunder Bay,” Skibinski says. “She has been an active volunteer in Thompson for over 20 years and dedicated her time with the following organizations: she is currently the active Rotarian president, active past president of Thompson Festival of the Arts, active board member of the Burntwood Curling Club, past coach of youth soccer, past committee member of the Winter festival and Rogers Hometown Hockey, volunteer driver for Continued on Page 2
