It’s been almost three years since the death of Leah Anderson, a 15-year-old girl from Gods Lake Narrows and no arrest has been made. Anderson’s body was found extremely beaten near a snowmobile trail, and RCMP deemed it to be a homicide.

A walk that kicked off in Thompson on Aug. 10 is about raising awareness, says Leah’s mother Sally Anderson. “I have been struggling with my healing.

There isn’t a day that goes by with-

out thinking about all this, and thinking about my late daughter.

My family is all sticking together, and we need justice now, because there has been none.”

Josie Stevenson organized the walk and says it’s been in the works since May. The walkers will make four stops along the way in Ponton, Grand Rapids, Fairford and finally Winnipeg. During each stop, Stevenson says, there will be people meeting the walkers, and they will camp out in the evenings.

Food, water and camping gear have been donated by family

members and friends, and in attendance are Leah’s brothers and sisters, as well as other immediate family, and community members from Thompson and Gods Lake Narrows.

Anderson hopes to have a ceremony in Winnipeg celebrating the life of her daughter, and Stevenson hopes to walk to the legislature building and explain why they made the trip.

There are cars following the walkers along Highway 6 with supplies and places for walkers to take a break and ride in the cars.

Before leaving, Anderson said she can feel her daughter there with them. “I know Leah and her spirit will be with us while we walk, and we all miss and love her very much. As we struggle to heal, that’s when we all come together.”

Both Anderson and Stevenson wish to thank the communities, organizations and family and friends for taking on this walk, and helping raise awareness for the unsolved death of Leah Anderson, as well as the other unsolved deaths of missing and murdered aboriginal women.

Churchill candidates share common background in education

Most Northern Manitobans are enjoying the summer weather or worrying about the looming prospect of back-to-school shopping and then school itself, but at least three people have their eye on a date further down the road, a little past Thanksgiving: the Oct. 19 federal election.

The federal riding of Churchill-Keewatinook Aski – an expanded version of the Churchill riding that extends down into new territory in the Interlake – is a three-way race so far with two-term incumbent Niki Ashton of the NDP being challenged

by Rebecca Chartrand of the Liberals and August Hastmann of the Green Party. The governing Conservatives do not have a candidate yet and a call to the phone number listed for the party’s riding association to fi nd out if anyone intends to run had not been returned by press time.

Ashton says it’s an exciting time to be a candidate for the NDP, currently the offi cial Opposition, and she’s looking forward to the possibility of forming a new government.

“The level of opposition we’re seeing to [Prime Minister Stephen] Harper is unprecedented,” she said, adding that launching the

August Hastmann, Rebecca Chartrand and Niki Ashton are seeking to represent Churchill-Keewatinook Aski. campaign in the summer when voters aren’t traditionally paying attention to politics isn’t fooling anyone. “I think people are seeing through what Stephen Harper did.”

The Chartrand campaign also senses that it’s time for change, though naturally they feel that Liberal leader Justin Trudeau – or, as Harper calls him, Justin – would be a better next prime minister than the NDP’s Tom Mulcair.

“After a decade of Harper, we want change that will make a real difference in the lives of all Canadians in Churchill-Keewatinook Aski — change that will help families make ends meet, put more money in

their pockets, and bring this country together,” said Chartrand in an Aug. 3 press release. “It is time for a new plan to grow the middle class and invest in a stronger economy for our northern communities.”

The Green Party’s Hastmann, however, who had not responded to emails requesting an interview by press time, stresses the need for change as individuals and society in his biography on the party’s website, which says he believes in “living within your means, consuming less, taking care of everything as a good steward, and helping others to do the same … Ultimately, August would like to build

a stronger, more peaceful and more environmentally responsible country.”

Originally from Selkirk and raised on a small subsistence farm outside Beausejour, Hastmann has been teaching for the past 15 years in Northern Manitoba communities including Cross Lake, South Indian Lake, Pukatawagan, Gods River, Shamattawa, Garden Hill and Wasagamack and is currently teaching in Split Lake. Prior to taking up teaching, he says he served in the military, owned a takeout pizza business and milked cows for a living.

Chartrand is also in education and currently lives in Winnipeg, though she

has family in Thompson, York Landing and The Pas and her professional life has seen her work as far north as Lac Brochet.

Ashton, meanwhile, who was fi rst elected in 2008 and then re-elected in 2011, also has a background in education as a former instructor with the University College of the North.

Chartrand’s platform emphasizes familiar Liberal commitments to help the middle-class and to raise families and children out of poverty.

“We have a plan that will cut taxes for the middle class, so Canadians can keep more of their hardearned money,” she said.

“We will also create one bigger, fairer, automatic, and tax-free monthly benefi t that will help families across Northern Manitoba with the high cost of raising their kids. Nine out of 10 families will get more from our plan. With the second-youngest demographics in Canada, the Canada Child Benefit would have an enormous impact in this riding.”

Hastmann’s bio also focuses on bringing Northern Manitobans the things that many of them do without, including roads and more education funding to housing and water and sewer infrastructure. On of his greatest concerns, he says, is the destruction of forest in Northern Manitoba by companies including Manitoba Hydro, while he also stresses food security and access to clean water as highly important.

Ashton also identifies the concerns of her riding as having been the most important issues for her in her time as MP. “What happens in the north has always been my number one priority,” she says, adding that she’s familiar with her constituents concerns because she lives among them. “I think it’s important to live in our riding. We’ve gone to bat on key issues that matter to us.”

You’ve seen and heard it all before. Maybe you are even a victim. Vacation photos from your trip in Greece, a university term paper on which you spent weeks that’s due tomorrow, your entire digital music collection painstakingly ripped from vinyl, and even that funny cat picture you wanted to share with your cat-loving friends - all gone without warning. This is the situation known as data loss.

There’s even the odd situation where you opened a

spreadsheet file to encounter cells with only part of your budget and the remaining cells fi lled with random symbols and characters; or your mom tried to show you a picture of herself standing on a cliff overlooking a European town, but you only see her head and the rest of the photo is blank with some nonsensical color blocks. For OS X, a great alternative is Carbon Copy Cloner. It’s a powerful tool that can create a full bootable backup for your Mac, which means if your hard drive ever stops working, you can restore your backup to a new drive. There’s a bit of a learning curve, though, so if you are averse to that,

stick with Time Machine.

All it takes is a couple hours out of your life to set up a backup job schedule, then the rest will be automated. Considering that the cost of entry is low and the only tangible price is time and effort, how much is having peace of mind for your data worth to you?

Employment project launches within Ma-Mow-We-Tak Friendship Centre

A new partnership between the Ma-Mow-WeTak Friendship Centre and Vale was launched on Aug 6 in Thompson. The project named the Employment First North project focuses on how to get more urban aboriginal people hired by Vale. “Part of the project is to look at what happens when you apply to Vale, and looking at their procedures, and looking at building the partnership with Vale, and how we can help them hire urban aboriginal people,” Anita Campbell, executive rirector for the Ma-MowWe-Tak Friendship centre explained.

There are four goals for this project, says Campbell.

The first one is to increase economic participation of the urban aboriginal population in the city of Thompson. The second is to increase the partnerships and increase communication about how to bridge the employment gap. The third is to address the barriers that exist for urban aboriginal people in the workforce, and the final goal is to establish sustainable practices to move towards social enterprise.

Ryan Land, manager of corporate affairs and organizational development with Vale’s Manitoba operations, says the company has a goal over time to become more representative of the regional demographic but doesn’t have the expertise in helping people get ready for a high-level industrial career, and he says that’s why this partnership is great. “This is focusing on the next group of people who need some investment made in them,

whether it is upgrading or work experience, or counselling support, or life coaching, just to get them workplace ready. Not ready today doesn’t mean not ready forever.”

Campbell says this project is funded by the federal government with funding that was announced last February. “It was part of the reallocation of the Urban Aboriginal Strategy dollar, so the federal government announced one area being the community capacity support, which is core-like funding, and the second being within urban partnerships.”

During the launch the Ma-Mow-We-Tak Friendship Centre was full of hopeful participants for the project. Campbell says there have been staff hired for this project, and other hopeful participants can contact the centre or apply online once the online application is put on the website.

With Vale hoping to

represent the regional demographic, Land stated that before the Northern Employment Strategy launched a few years ago, 15-17 per cent of workers were self-declared aboriginal, and after the strategy launched they’re already over 20 per cent.

“We identify those barriers, and they have been indentified all over the place, but the TEDWG [Thompson Economic Diversification Working Group] process is one of the areas where we looked at barriers like education and training and housing, and this program seeks to address some of those barriers.”

The Employment First North Project is free and is geared towards urban aboriginal peoples. Campbell says they’re looking for other employers in Thompson to join the partnership, and any employers looking to hire urban aboriginal people can contact the MaMow-We-Tak Friendship Centre.

A curious account

I

f I ever see an obviouslooking bank robber – mask, gun, sack with a money symbol on it, you know the type - running out of a bank being chased by an ultra-dedicated bank employee or security guard (I know this would probably never happen, but indulge me), my first inclination will be to stick my foot out and trip the pursuer to enable the robber to have a better Ian Graham chance at a clean getaway. It won’t be because of any particular fondness for bank robbers, though really, who can blame them? My action will stem only from a deep-seated desire to hinder the bank in its pursuit of billion-dollar profits through the erstwhile gouging of their suck … er, customers.

Like many other people in this world of modern “conveniences,” some of the regular payments I have to make to keep a roof over my head and to protect my investment in said roof in case it burns down or some similar tragedy occurs are automatically withdrawn from my bank account at regular intervals, just as the money I get for working at the newspaper is automatically deposited into the account every payday. Ostensibly, this is to make things easier for me, but really, it’s just to make sure that the banks get their money on the date they expect it. I can tell because they don’t charge me $1.50 every time it happens.

Anyways, normally this isn’t a problem though lately it has become more challenging to ensure everything goes smoothly since my payment dates for these “conveniences” were set up to correspond with my paydays before my employers switched from twice-monthly to bi-weekly pay periods. On occasion, the dates when money is set to come out fall on a weekend or holiday and, on occasion, the amount required to cover those transactions isn’t there on that date.

However, I have noticed in the past that, when this occurs, the pre-authorized payments are usually not applied to the account until the end of the first business day when the bank is open and, if I make a deposit in the morning of that day, there won’t be any problems.

Perhaps the bank has noticed this as well, since, at the beginning of this month, two pre-authorized withdrawals took place on Aug. 3 – now known as Terry Fox Day in Manitoba – which is curious, since the branch I bank with wasn’t even open that day and, had I wished to make a deposit by other means than the bank machine, I would have been, ahem, out of luck. Still, the fi rst Monday in August is only a holiday in Alberta, B.C., Saskatchewan, Ontario and Nunavut, so perhaps they just shopped around for a province or territory where it wasn’t and, say, deducted the amount via a branch in Prince Edward Island or some other province that I have never been too. Stranger still, the usurious $48 non-sufficient funds fee – times two for a doubly galling $96 – was actually applied to my account on July 31, before the transactions that overdrew it took place, chronologically speaking.

And while I am no financial whiz, I fail to see, barring a rip in the fabric of the space-time continuum or the invention of time travel, how I could possibly be charged money in advance of the actual occurrence for which the penalty applies.

Or maybe it’s just that the bank involved employs psychics. If that’s the case perhaps they’d like to tell me what bank I will choose to do my banking at from now on.

Out&About

Mammograms aren’t fun but they can save your life

B

oobs, melons, the golden girls, or maybe they are just your breasts. However you refer to your body parts, your breasts need to be an important part of your physical. There have been many jokes and cartoons made about mammograms that scare some women out of getting one done, but really it’s not that bad. I’m not saying it’s fun or something I enjoy doing but for the small amount of time and discomfort it takes getting this test done, it can save your life. It’s not something we should put off.

I just had a mammogram done last week and Rebeca the technician was so patient and caring. It’s true that they do stretch your breast and then squash it and say “don’t breathe” and you probably couldn’t breathe if you tried but it’s over very quickly. I think the worst part is waiting for the results. I pray my results will come back saying that everything is normal, but if they don’t I would hope that I could handle a diagnosis like my friend Sharlyn

Donna Wilson did. She never once thought she would die from cancer and considered it a bump in the road she had to deal with. Shar told me that she felt like she was on the top of the hill and had to keep pulling everyone up one by one reassuring them everything would be OK. She had a complete mastectomy but is now at a time in her life that she can joke about her new breasts. She says all the old ladies in the nursing home will be jealous that she has the perkiest boobs. She also says if she ever gains weight she can just buy new ones.

Everyone reacts in their own way but we do know that having a positive attitude goes a long way and I believe a positive attitude is what helped Sharlyn get to where she is today. She now lives in Newfoundland but was in Thompson a few weeks ago and it was the happiest I’ve seen her. She is enjoying every moment of life.

It often takes a life-

changing moment for us to realize how precious life is.

A cancer diagnosis can leave you in fear, shock, and denial and cause much stress, and people experience many different emotions. They suggest any woman over the age of 50 have a mammogram. Early detection could save your life. Besides, you ladies that have already been for your mammogram know that you get to take home some free jewelry.

Four candidates seeking to be MKO grand chief

There are four candidates – including one woman and one defi ned by youth – and the incumbent’s name is Harper, but it’s not the federal election.

Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO) announced the candidates Aug. 6 for its Sept. 2 grand chief election during its general assembly in Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation (NCN) and they include the incumbent MKO Grand Chief David Harper of Garden Hill First Nation as well as journalist Sheila North Wilson originally from Bunibonibee Cree Nation at Oxford House, and 19-year-old Tyler Duncan of Norway House Cree Nation as well as William Elvis Thomas of NCN. The new grand chief will be elected by a vote of chiefs and councillors from MKO’s 30 member First Nations during its 34th annual general assembly.

Thomas, who served NCN as a councillor from 1998 to 2006, is no stranger to being a candidate, having run unsuccessfully for MKO grand chief in 2009 as well as for NCN chief in 2010 and 2014.

Duncan, a three-term youth chief of Norway House Cree Nation and former MKO youth council grand chief, ran for the presidency of the Manitoba NDP party earlier this year.

North Wilson moved to Winnipeg to fi nish school when she was 15 and has experience as a reporter with NCI Radio, the CBC and CTV in Winnipeg and also spent time as the communications officer for the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs.

Harper is a former chief of Garden Hill First Nation and was first elected as MKO grand chief in September 2009, succeeding former grand chief Sydney Garrioch. He was re-elected in 2012 and

has been criticized during his second term for an agreement signed with the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) and faced allegations of improper spending.

To be elected grand chief, a candidate must receive more than 50 per cent of all ballots cast by registered voters with additional rounds of voting if no one reaches that threshold on the first ballot.

Incorporated in 1981, MKO is a political advocacy organization representing 30 Northern Manitoba First Nations that are signatories to Treaties 4, 5, 6 and 10.

First local Narcotics Anonymous convention this weekend

Thompson’s Narcotics Anonymous group is hoping to have a packed dance and plenty of campfire sing-alongs during its fi rst-ever convention this weekend in Thompson and at Paint Lake.

The Aug. 14-16 Howling Wolves Convention will include a group camp-out at Paint Lake Provincial Park and an alcohol- and drug-free dance on Saturday night at the Manitoba Metis Federation building on Cree Road, says Clint, one of the organizers and a group member, whose last name is being withheld in accordance with the principles of the anonymous recovery group.

Thompson has had a

Narcotics Anonymous group for more than 10 years, Clint says, with about fi ve regular members for most of those years. Over the past few year, however, the number of meeting attendees has grown and a big meeting for the group, which gets together twice a week, is now about a dozen people. When you count all the people who come out sporadically or have only been out to a meeting or two, there’s probably 50 or 60 people who have been to meetings.

Narcotics Anonymous conventions are held to celebrate members’ recovery and have been held in prairie cities like Regina and Winnipeg for about 30 years. Thompson’s first

“Most conventions have speakers fl own in usually,” says Clint, with the keynote speakers often having been part of Narcotics Anonymous for 30 years or more. “We’re not in a position to bring anybody in.”

That said, Clint hopes there will be some people from out of town at the event – Flin Flon and The Pas have Narcotics Anonymous groups that were established more recently than Thompson’s – and he is confi dent the local members can carry the organizing load.

“We’re going to try and be a bit more inclusive,” he says, noting that Thompson has many members with 10 years or more of sobriety who can get in front of the microiphone and share their stories and chair meetings during the convention. “We’ve got a lot of leaders. We feel we can pull it off.”

Attendees who can’t afford a hotel or would prefer to be in an outdoor group setting can camp at Paint Lake - $20 a person gives them admittance to the group campsite and the dance – and the dance is open to anyone with $5 who wants to dance in a sober environment. After Dark Productions is providing the music.

“Dances are big in Narcotics Anonymous,” says Clint, as they provide a place for recovering addicts to socialize with likeminded people, particularly on Friday and Saturday nights. “They can be a lot of fun without drugs or without alcohol.”

The dance likely won’t be the only place with music, Clint says, since there are many musicians in Narcotics Anonymous and there’ll likely be some playing and singing at Paint Lake as well.

Clint says regular members at Narcotics Anonymous meetings in Thomp-

son are generous with their donations to the collection place – “the members here put in bills” – and that the stories shared can be fairly powerful.

“There’s people in this community who have been through a lot of trauma,” he says. “There’s a reason why people turn to drugs to cope with life.”

Founded in 1953, Narcotics Anonymous helps participants recover from drug addiction through a 12-step program that includes regular attendance of meetings.

Bike safety lacking, says RCMP constable

Const. Andrew Carter with the RCMP has been in Thompson for about six months now and one thing he’s noticed is the lack of bicycle safety in the city. In bigger cities, as well as smaller towns, Carter says he always sees it, and wants to help educate people so cyclists don’t end up in accidents with brain damage.

When Carter was riding his bike in Calgary a car struck him, resulting in his head smashing into the hood of the car, creating a big dent, and splitting his helmet down the middle. If his helmet was not on, that could have been his head, and ever since then it has been Carter’s mission to educate people on bicycle safety.

The most well-known issue surrounds helmets.

It’s law that anyone under the age of 18 has to wear a helmet, but Carter urges every single person riding a bike to put their head in a helmet, as it’s like a seatbelt for your head. For people who cannot afford a helmet, the province has started a low-cost helmet program, which is run through schools. Anyone

and state they need bike helmets, and if approved can be eligible for a $15 dollar helmet.

The second is where one is supposed to ride a bike. Contrary to many people’s thoughts where you ride your bike is not based on age, but how big your tires are. “It all depends on the size of your rear wheel. 410 mm or 19 inches, like those BMX bikes can ride on the sidewalks, but if it’s over that you have to ride on the road. When you’re on the road you have to follow the rules of the road,” explained Carter.

In the Highway Traffic Act it says it’s mandatory that people signal while on their bikes, which Carter says rarely happens. Cyclists must signal when they’re turning right, left or stopping so other vehicles know what they’re doing. If a biker is going to be wearing headphones, it’s legal to wear one ear bud, but not two. A cyclist has to be able to hear what is going on around them, and be mindful of the other modes of transportation and pedestrians.

Carter took part in a law enforcement course focusing on bike patrol, and says the best thing he learned was the need to be seen and be predictable, and he hopes others take that into considera-

tion.

Thompson RCMP has a bike patrol, and RCMP are travelling throughout the community educating people on bike safety.

“It’s the need to be safe.

My concern isn’t writing

people tickets, or anything like that, I just don’t want people to get hit by cars. We’ve seen it a few times this summer, and it’s one of those things that isn’t supposed to happen,” Carter says.

A user of Thompson’s dog park off Baffin Crescentsince it opened, Sharon Wilson spoke during the June 23 recreation and community Services committee meeting about how the off-leash area could be improved.

Wilson is part of a group of residents who meet at the dog park every weeknight and hang out with their four-legged friends.

The group sat down and wrote a list of nearly 30 points of improvement they’d like to have happen.

of water in the park, on the sand where the old baseball diamond was. With the standing water being there dogs urinate in it, and drink it, which can cause infections and contamination.

Oswald Sawh, with the Thompson Humane Society, says after talks with John Burrows, the director of recreation, parks and culture, that the city is aware of the problem. “[John Burrows] said that the city has committed to building a mound to make sure there is no more large areas of water.”

Wilson noted that it would be nice to have some type of water feature or tap

in the park for the dogs to be able to get water, but Sawh says that is an expensive digging project, that money would have to be raised for.

The second issue facing many puppy parents is the lack of garbage bins in the park. Wilson says there isn’t one by the gate, and when cleaning up after their dogs, people have to walk across the whole park to dump their doggy doodoo bags. Sawh also noted that placing another bin in the park by the gate would have to come from fundraising money, since the bins are expensive.

believe the park to be a no cost item for the city.

“I think my biggest concern when I first talked to John Burrows was that they anticipate the park to be a no-cost item, and I think that’s a dangerous way of doing it. It may be a low-cost item, and you can call on park volunteers to help, but I think they need to have a budget.”

Since speaking to the committee over a month ago, Wilson says no one has contacted her with a plan or a timeline. Wilson says users of the dog park are willing to help out but a two-way conversation has to happen. “We can help write letters, make phone calls, and stuff like that, as long as we know what the city wants. Since I presented no one has been in touch with me. We need to have the communication.

The right hand needs to know what the left hand is doing.”

The issue of dog poop bags has come up multiple times, Wilson mentioned.

Although she brings her own bags, she’s noticed the bag holder being empty, and dog feces on the park grounds, since owners might have forgotten their own bags.

Sawh says it’s recommended that owners bring

their own bags, or contact the City of Thompson if the bag dispenser is empty, and workers will refill it.

The need for a second gate was also spoken about during the committee meeting, and Sawh believes that’s a needed feature. Wilson says there have been times where dogs have gotten out, and had to be chased back, and even have gotten out through gaps in the fences. Although Sawh says it’s a good idea, he reiterated that money for a new gate would have to happen through fundraising.

Wilson says there are plenty of owners willing to help out and make the park exactly what it has the potential to be, but the discussions need to happen.

Sawh says currently he’s hoping to plan a meeting with dog owners, and in September to have a public meeting to create a dog park committee.

When the committee is set Sawh hopes to sit down and map out a work plan, and prioritize what issues need to be fixed right away, and what ones can wait.

There is also hope for agility equipment to eventually be put up in the park, which Sawh hopes to discuss with the city and the planned dog park committee.

Property tax bills are due by Sept. 30

City of Thompson property tax statements have been sent out with the most recent water and sewer utility bills and property owners who don’t pay via their mortgage holder or by the tax installment program have until Sept. 30 to settle up.

The total mill rate for residential properties this year is 38.298, made up of a 20.670 municipal mill rate and a 17.628 School District of Mystery Lake mill rate, while the commercial mill rate also includes an 11.610 provincial mill rate for a total of 49.908. There is also a 4.49 per cent business tax.

The mill rate is the rate of taxes for every $1,000 of portioned assessment.

For a residential property worth $200,000, taxes are applied on 45 per cent of the assessed value, which

would be $90,000, for a total tax bill of $3,446.82, or $2,746.82 after the provincial education tax rebate of $700 is applied.

The city says the municipal mill rate is lower than in Winnipeg, Steinbach, Winkler, Brandon and Morden and that the education levy is less than in Neepawa, Winnipeg, Selkirk, Portage la Prairie, Brandon, Steinbach, Dauphin and Morden.

The tax bill also includes an $88.60 special levy which is a five-year levy that covers repairs to storm, sewer and water service lines that are more than one metre from the foundation on residential properties.

Overall, residential property taxes are up 1.5 per cent from 2014, with the city portion rising 3.4 per cent and the school district portion dropping by 0.6 per cent.

Free job training coming this September

The YWCA is holding Steps to Success this September, which is a month full of free essential skills training. Cat Cogle spoke to the Thompson Chamber of Commerce about the program Aug. 5. “In September we have essential skills for employment. This one is a brand new curriculum, that has just been developed, and we’re looking for feedback from employers. Because it’s in the development stage we can add to our curriculum. If there’s certain things you’re noticing in the workplace that you

like addressed, we can address those in training.”

Cogle gave examples of time management or workplace attitudes.

The idea behind getting employers’ feedback about the program started because the YWCA wants to know what the issues are in the working field, and how they can help improve them, and see more people be hired.

The training can be for people looking to get a job, or a current employee who needs to brush up on some essential skills to better fit their position. Some of the skills participants will be

receiving are computer skills, workplace skills, communication skills and job search skills.

In October the Thompson Hospitality Training will be taking place. This is more of a job-specific training, and will be focused on line cooks and front desk agents this year. Cogle says they choose certain positions based on the need in Thompson and job postings.

Cogle says they’re also hoping to include a job shadowing aspect to the course, and are looking for employers who would like to take part. As well they will be doing certi-

fication like WHMIS and first aid.

Thompson Chamber of Commerce president Keith MacDonald says this is a great program, but a great program can’t happen if there aren’t people willing to take part.

Cogle says the YWCA staff will be visiting different employers to get feedback about what is needed for the essential skills for employment, and Cogle noted that any business could contact the YWCA with tips and information.

The program starts Sept. 9 at 9 a.m. and will be held at the YWCA.

Shop local movement wanted by Chamber of Commerce

Members of the Thompson Chamber of Commerce responded to a survey sent out in June regarding a shop local movement in the city. Thirty-ďŹ ve people responded out of the 117, but Keith MacDonald, Chamber of Commerce president says that 30 per cent has been the highest response rate since the surveys started in March.

There were 10 questions for employers to respond to, with the ďŹ rst one being if the chamber of commerce should promote a shop local campaign. 91.43 per cent said yes, 5.71 per cent said maybe, and only 2.86 per cent said no.

MacDonald noted that although the membership sees the need for a shop local campaign, it would be hard without the ďŹ nancial help of the federal government, provincial government or the City of Thompson. MacDonald hopes to gain partnerships to go forward with this. “We priced this our four years ago, and it was $45,000 a year to run the shop local program.â€?

28.13 per cent said the hotel accommodation tax should be used towards the chamber of commerce.

MacDonald noted the chamber has been in talks with the city regarding that exact topic. “The promise is that city will look into it for the 2016 budget, which is good. Currently it goes to affordable housing, infrastructure and public safety. If we can get about 10 per cent of that money for tourism or economic development, the local shopping campaign will ďŹ t in.â€?

One thing MacDonald found of importance in the survey results was the need for customer service training in the north.

91.43 per cent of respondents said there is a need for customer service training in Thompson, and that it should be offered to local businesses. 38.71 per cent said if this was offered management would take part, and 29.03 per cent said staff would be trained as well.

During the last chamber of commerce meeting the essential skills training being offered by the YWCA was discussed.

94.29 per cent said in the survey the reason Thompsonites shop in Winnipeg is because there is more selection, while 65.71 per cent said it’s because of bad local customer service. MacDonald says there’s a serious need to have local stores increase sales to keep business in the north.

Survey participants had their own ideas on how to compete with online shopping and travel shopping. Some suggestions include offering a “Forksâ€? style of market for small businesses, services and artists, having a box store area, more variety of outdoor activities like hunting and ďŹ shing, a business tax break, and having enough staff to reduce line-ups.

The ďŹ nal question asked if Thompson should do more promotion in neighbouring communities. While 67.62 per cent said yes, there was 5.88

per cent who said no. One comment included that they didn’t know Thompson businesses did promotions. MacDonald says they run radio ads about shopping local in the fall and winter, but only have a small budget, and hopes to increase the promotion of the local businesses. He ďŹ nished by saying if you shop local you’ll be helping locally owned businesses, who then in return will help out the community by donations if they have the funds.

The August survey, MacDonald says, will most likely be a more in-depth look at shopping locally.
