Gathering around the bonfire is a tradition, and often the musicians will join in the conversation during their breaks.

S

ome call the road to get there just another dirt road. Others call it “the way to the blues.”

Florida’s first site listed on the Mississippi Blues Trail, the Bradfordville Blues Club is an historic, one-room cinder block “juke joint” featuring nationally-renowned blues performers.

Featuring a different artist every Friday and Saturday night, the club welcomes music followers to sit around the bonfire, weather permitting, and hear what is defined as being of Black American folk origin. The blues is a music genre from the Deep South around 1860s, born of African American work songs and spirituals.

Developed in the rural southern United States toward the end of the 19th century, the blues found a larger audience in the 1940s, as rural folks migrated to the cities, and urban blues evolved into what we now know as rhythm and blues and rock and roll.

“The rumor is that the club was a

one-room schoolhouse where teachers from New York came to teach,” says current club owner Gary Anton, “but there is very little history available in written form.”

Since there is no written history, Anton tells the story as he knows it.

Allen Henry and his sister Inez Haynes built the club in 1964 as a community club. The couple opened the club on family land dating back to the 1800s, which had hosted artists on the Chitlin Circuit, the venues that welcomed Continued, p.17

African American musicians and fans during Segregation.

“Before that,” he says, “it depends upon who you talk to and how much they’ve had to drink. There was a speakeasy back up in the woods. Back when the town clubs were closing at 2am, some of the players would come to Bradfordville after they shut down in Frenchtown, an historically Black neighborhood. They would come out to the club and sit in with bands that happened to be playing. I’ve gathered from two different sources that they saw B.B. King, Ray Charles, Fats Domino, and Chuck Berry play.”

Negro League baseball teams played there from the 30s to the 80s. Large crowds would gather, and some people would choose to stay overnight. There would be impromptu music around the bonfire, played with whatever instruments they could find. Eventually, when the club opened in ’64, some of that music moved inside, says Anton.

Inez Haynes, granddaughter of Henry,

purchased the land in 1820s from the Henry family (slave descendants) and held it until the 1880s. There is no known recorded history, but rumors continue that those on the Chitlin’ Circuit often performed, some with full orchestras.

Anton, during and after a successful legal career, and wife, Kim, with a career in nursing, have owned the club since 2002. Through some tough times there, including hurricane damage several years back, the Antons proudly protect and preserve the blues club’s heritage, now part of the Blues Foundation. Once called Centerville Community Center, it sits

GETTING THERE Take Thomasville Rd (Hwy. 319) approximately 25 miles south to Bradfordville Road. Turn right onto Bradfordville Road and drive three miles to Sam’s Lane. Look for the Bradfordville Blues Club sign and a lit tiki torch on the right. Turn right onto Sam’s Lane. It is a dirt road that at times is a bit rough but is always passable. Just take it slow and easy, it’s not very long. Bear left at the fork in the road.

among what the local garden club would call “a few murdered crepe myrtles,” tall pines, and dead trees, lost dog signs, the former baseball field now a parking area, festive strung lights, weeds, and a covered smoking section with a sign “hippies use the back door.” Purchased from Dave Claytor, the night club was previously known as the CC Club or Dave’s CC Club.

In 1992, Dave Claytor reopened the club and began bringing in nationally renowned touring acts on a regular basis and really put the club on the map.

“My wife Kim and I came when Dave and the baseball field were still there in what used to be a cornfield, quite like the story in Field of Dreams,” says Anton.

Anton, somewhat an old hippie, is usually adorned in a ball cap covering the long gray hair. He jokingly calls the club “an unintentional nonprofit.”

transplant in 2016, Anton says he must be here for a reason. He and Kim invite you down the dirt road to the “Juke Joint Under the Stars,” offering checkers under the oaks, beer and wine, fried fish, and the best blues around for a $20 or $25 cover. “Come hang out and listen to music,” says Anton, pointing out that they offer “indoor plumbing and running water and all,” in case earlier descriptions have thrown readers off.

This sacred rural ground of musical history is about 12 miles northeast of downtown Tallahassee, on dirt roads called Sam and Moses Lanes. And no, Anton has no intention of paving the road. TM

ach reading season has its perks. In the winter, we can cozy up in quilts and sip hot tea while reading dark and stormy

mysteries. In the spring, we can sit on our porches and listen to the birds in the breeze while picking up a book about new beginnings. And summer? Well, summer is perhaps the best reading season. The kids are out of school, beach trips are on the calendar, and around July it quite simply becomes too hot to do anything except pick up a book.

he age-old dilemma of children claiming boredom during the summer will be no problem for Thomasville residents this year. Local Thomasville businesses have curated a wonderful assortment of activities that children of all ages can enjoy. From a range of free events, to paid summer camps, children in Thomasville and surrounding areas can be kept busy during the dog days of summer.

IMAGINATION EMPORIUM Located in beautiful downtown Thomasville, the toy store Imagination Emporium has become a Thomasville staple in its few years on the cobbled brick streets. Owner Anna Lee had the dream of owning her own toy store for many years but didn’t see a clear path to success. With the support of her husband, she decided to dive into her passion and opened her first store in nearby Camilla, GA. After a successful four years there, and through a series of events, Anna made the decision to move to Thomasville and has been welcomed with open arms since. “The city of Thomasville has been very receptive and supportive of me and my business, which is now flourishing thanks to this wonderful community of families.”

YOU’RE MAKER You’re Maker is a premier craft studio created especially to fuel the fire of young artists in Thomasville. They offer sewing and art classes after school for ages three and up (sewing classes begin at age five). Children who participate in classes or camps at You’re Maker not only have the opportunity to learn valuable artistic skills like sewing, they will also have a blast creating special projects they can take home and enjoy for years to come.

The studio is owned by Carrie Hale, who has an extensive background in art and elementary education. She is passionate about helping to foster a love of creativity, art, and self-expression in children.

They also offer a Preschool Play Group 10-11am on Saturday mornings for ages 18-months to five years.

Summer opportunities are numerous, with multiple camps of different themes. Most of the camps are offered to children three and up, and parents can register at youremaker.com.

Summer Fun TASTE OF THOMASVILLE The Taste of Thomasville Food Tour is not for adults only. They also offer school group tours as well as tours geared toward families with children, which would be a great outing this summer.

Children will have the opportunity to learn how cheese is made at Sweetgrass Dairy, and they will get to try delicious Moonspin Pizza, all while learning about the history of Thomasville. There are several fun and educational stops along the way. These tours will only be offered during the month of June this summer. In July, children and families can embark on a scavenger hunt.

THOMAS COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY The Thomas County Public Library is pleased to announce their summer theme, “Oceans of Possibilities.” Throughout June and July, there will be various events at the library centering around an oceanic theme. Children can see a live animal exhibit, put their creative forces to work on Lego Day, and tap their inner artist at multiple arts and crafts events. Returning this year as a major fan favorite is the Gulf Specimen Marine Lab on June 7. Events will also be taking place at the Boston, Coolidge, Ochlocknee, and Pavo libraries. All events are free, but some require pre-registration due to limited space and supplies. Register now at tcpls.org.

Additionally, the library’s Summer Reading Program encourages children to track their reading time in minutes. Once they’ve read a certain number of minutes, they will have the opportunity to be entered into a drawing for a variety of prizes.

Reading is an excellent way to pass time on hot summer days, and the Thomas County Public Library is passionate about providing opportunities to promote literacy for Thomasville’s children.

YMCA The YMCA offers a variety of summer camps for children. With a plethora of options, there is sure to be one for each child’s specific interests. Camp Pineywoods is a traditional camp perfect for outdoor lovers while Rose City Camp caters more to those who love crafting, singing, and field trips. Additionally, sports camps, including basketball, volleyball, football, tennis, golf, and gymnastics, will also be available this year. The YMCA is proud to offer fun, affordable camps to nearly 1,000 Thomas County children each summer. More information can be found at ymca-thomasville.org.

THE BOOKSHELF The Bookshelf is also joining in the fun to encourage children to read. Their summer program is called Summer by the Slice. Children can visit The Bookshelf to pick up a special bookmark punch card. When they have read three books, they can go to Paulie’s Pizza to redeem their bookmark for a free slice of pizza. During the months of May, June, and July, readers can earn three free slices of pizza if they read three books per month.

On July 14, local author Susan Koehler will be hosting a workshop entitled Grow Your Story.

Young writers will learn about creating a story and the essentials of storytelling. Admission is $12 for this perfect event for aspiring authors.

Back by popular demand, Waldo will also be making a repeat appearance this summer.

Families may obtain their Waldo Passport from The Bookshelf and get to scouting. Over 20 downtown businesses, notated by a Waldo decal in their window, will have a Waldo hiding somewhere in their store. Once a child discovers a Waldo, that respective business will award him with a stamp on his passport. There will be a very special story time at The Bookshelf at the end of July when children can bring their fully stamped passports and enjoy a story about Waldo and fun giveaways.

Summer Salads Peaches, Burrata & Prosciutto Salad INGREDIENTS 2 tbsp pine nuts 3 yellow peaches, pitted and sliced into wedges 8 oz burrata cheese, torn into chunks 2 oz prosciutto, torn into long strips ¾ cup loosely packed fresh basil leaves ½ tsp salt Freshly ground black pepper, to taste 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2 tbsp white balsamic vinegar INSTRUCTIONS Place the pine nuts in a small skillet over medium heat. Cook, stirring constantly, until golden brown in spots, a few minutes. Transfer to a small bowl and let cool.

Arrange the peaches and prosciutto on a platter.

Top with the burrata and basil. Sprinkle with salt and pepper, and then drizzle with oil and vinegar.

Sprinkle the pine nuts over top and serve.

Roasted Beet & Mandarin Salad INGREDIENTS 4 Beets 1 8 oz can Mandarin orange segments, drained 1/4 cup feta cheese crumbled mixed salad greens 1/2 cup chopped walnuts 2 tsp balsamic vinegar 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil, divided 1/4 tsp salt 1/4 tsp pepper INSTRUCTIONS Roast the beets Preheat the oven to 425F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Peel the beets and cut into 1-inch pieces. Toss the beet pieces with 1 tbsp of olive oil. Put the beets on a baking sheet in a single layer, put in the oven and bake for 30 minutes.

Make the dressing Put balsamic vinegar, 2 tbsp extravirgin olive oil, salt and pepper in a cup and mix with a fork.

Make the salad Put roasted beets, oranges, greens, and walnuts in a bowl. Pour the dressing over the beet salad and toss until combined. Sprinkle with feta cheese.

Strawberry, Goat Cheese & Chicken Salad INGREDIENTS 5 cups of spinach 1 cup fresh strawberries, sliced ¼ cup sliced almonds 2 tbs freshly chopped mint 3 oz soft goat cheese 1 cooked, seasoned chicken breast, chopped ¼ cup balsamic vinegar 2 tsp honey 1 tbs chopped garlic ½ tsp salt ½ tsp freshly ground black pepper ¾ cup olive oil INSTRUCTIONS For the dressing Whisk all ingredients except for olive oil together in a small bowl until salt is dissolved. Slowly pour olive oil until fully combined.

For the salad Gently toss spinach, strawberries, almonds, chicken, and mint in a large bowl. Crumble goat cheese over salad and pour over balsamic vinaigrette to taste.

Serve within 1-2 hours of preparation.

Tomato & Burrata Salad INGREDIENTS 4 medium heirloom tomatoes (about 1 lb) 25 leaves fresh basil (approximately) 4.4 oz burrata cheese ball (2 cheese balls optional) 1/4 cup capers flaky sea salt to taste (about 1/4 to 1/2 tsp) freshly ground black pepper (about 1/8 tsp) 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 2 tbsp aged balsamic vinegar croutons (optional) INSTRUCTIONS Slice the tomatoes about 1/4” thick and arrange on a serving platter. Evenly sprinkle the fresh basil leaves and capers over the tomatoes.

Slice the burrata into bite-sized pieces using a serrated knife. I usually cut a 4.4-ounce ball into 8 pieces. Lay on top of the tomatoes.

Sprinkle the salt and pepper evenly over the top of the tomatoes and burrata, then drizzle on the extra virgin olive oil and aged balsamic vinegar. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Celery and Cucumber with Herbs INGREDIENTS 6 celery stalks, thinly sliced crosswise 1 English cucumber, peeled, seeded, and thinly sliced crosswise 1/3 cup coarsely chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley 1/4 cup coarsely chopped fresh mint 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil Coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper Toss together celery, cucumber, parsley, mint, and oil in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper.

INGREDIENTS 8 oz farfalle pasta, whole wheat or white 3/4 - 1 cup basil pesto, homemade or store bought 2 cups cherry tomatoes, halved (I use half red and half yellow) mixed salad greens 1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese INSTRUCTIONS Cook pasta according to package instructions. Drain and rinse with cold water.

Add pasta to a large bowl and stir in pesto. Add tomatoes and toss to combine. Top with Parmesan cheese. Garnish with fresh cracked pepper, if desired. Serve on mixed salad greens.

Workout Mistakes and Overtraining

Something as simple as trying a new class can do wonders for your routine.

Time is precious. That’s why making the most out of every workout session is extremely important. And avoiding exercise mistakes is also important, not only to prevent injury but also to make sure you are reaping all the benefits of your sweat session.

There are so many ways you can change up your exercise routine to be more efficient, enjoyable, and result worthy. Tiny and simple changes can make a huge difference to your end goal, whether it’s gaining muscle, losing body fat, or reducing stress.

Here are some common workout mistakes— and how to fix them—for those putting together an exercise routine.

You wait to workout.

Yes, it’s true. Any workout during the day is better than no workout during the day. But

many people tend to talk themselves out of a workout if they wait until the end of the day. It’s easy to use the tired, stressed, too busy excuses as the day goes forward. Or maybe you truly did have the full intention of exercising, but something came up and you weren’t able to work out. Both can cause a dampener in the whole exercise routine if you can’t be consistent.

On the flip side, your fitness goals could also determine the best time of day to exercise, so make sure you schedule accordingly. Exercise is one of the best stress relievers—science proves it. If you struggle with sleep or high blood pressure, exercising in the morning is best. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research discovered moderate 7am walking resulted in a 10 percent blood pressure drop throughout the day. It also helped exercisers reach deeper sleep compared to working out at other times of the day.

If you need that extra incentive, find a like-minded friend to join you for workouts.

Giving and getting encouragement can be a game changer!

Local Health Getting your steps in during evening hours versus the morning can transform your diet in a way that better leads to weight loss, according to a study published in the Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness. Evening walking can also help curb cravings, improving weight loss success. But getting your steps in during the morning hours, especially fasting before breakfast, can help improve insulin levels. Love walking? You have lots of options.

You’re doing exercises you don’t like.

There is good news for those who work out in the evening, especially those trying to build muscle. Evening workouts are optimal if you’re looking to build muscle and increase strength.

But don’t short-change yourself by only using machines, another classic exercise mistake.

Although machines are great for targeting large muscles, they are on a fixed motion and neglect smaller stabilizer muscles. Free weights strengthen total-body movements, utilizing and coordinating both the large and small stabilizer muscle groups. Be sure to make free weights, machines, and even body-weight exercises part of your routine.

There’s even better news for the walkers out there, especially those walking to lose weight.

Exercise should never be a punishment. Yes, it might be challenging and sometimes hard, but never punishment. This is KEY when finding an exercise routine that works well for you and your goals. If you hate running but want better cardiovascular fitness or are looking to burn extra calories, try cycling or a fun Zumba class.

If you hate lifting weights or going to a gym but know you need to build strength, try a Pilates reformer, yoga, or Barre class that utilizes lighter weights and more body weight to push and strengthen muscles.

Your routine is too predictable.

The nervous system and muscle can adapt to your routine. Whenever we do anything without any variation, we can get bored and our fitness 65 THOMASVILLEMAGAZINE.COM | SUMMER 2022

Local Health goals can plateau, sometimes as early as 6 to 8 weeks. Here are some great ways to get out of the plateau: • • •

Many of us are guilty of going full steam ahead on a new fitness plan, only to burn out quickly when it isn’t sustainable.

Trade in your long sweat sessions for short, high intensity sessions a couple times a week.

If you’re always running or cycling, try adding swimming a couple times a week.

If you love taking classes and always go to the same instructor, try a new one.

This tends to be very hard for some people because they get stuck thinking that one instructor is the only one who “gets their body.” But give another instructor a try a couple times before making up your mind.

It’s okay to like one more than the other but changing up the instructor will also change up your routine and make your nervous system, brain, and muscles all work harder (even if the workout seems easier). OR…try a new class altogether!

Eliminate, or drastically cut back, on alcohol and caffeine. If you’re drinking and hitting a plateau, it’s time for “mocktails” instead. My personal favorite is sparkling water with lemon or lime. Love drinks with bitters? Try putting bitters into your sparkling water…this is also awesome for your digestive system. Kombucha is another great alternative to wine, but be careful because they do contain some caffeine and even small amounts of alcohol.

Read the labels!

Overtraining or lack of proper rest.

Overtraining is a problem. Not giving your body and hormones adequate resting time between workouts can cause injuries, mood problems, negative changes in your metabolism, and “burnout” within a couple of months. And it might not be just the overtraining but rather a combination of that along with stress from other factors. Poor lifestyle habits such as diet, sleep,

and/or a negative mindset can all add up to serious bodily damage.

Did you know that overtraining can even cause a weight gain?

Excessive exercise can lead to chronically high cortisol levels, which can switch your body into fat-storage mode. People who are overexerting themselves tend to be dehydrated and have intense cravings for sugar and/or salt. Find ways to enjoy active recovery.

Go for a walk, play a sport, find a yoga class, or meditate. All will create a healthier pathway to maintaining and reaching your wellness goals. Here is a great article to read on overtraining: draxe. com/fitness/overtraining.

The best advice is to figure out what your wellness goals are, then plan accordingly and create a schedule that you know will stick.

Ask a friend with similar goals to join you. Flip flop who decides what you do from week to week so you can stay consistent but have variety. THOM Collective is an artist membership at Thomasville Center for the Arts providing a platform for both local and regional artists to grow their potential, while providing collectors—novice or experienced—access to original, affordable art. A community of creative professionals, the collective is made up of visual, culinary, and performing artists.

THOM Collective provides a network of creatives with a variety of resources to help them in the development of their artistic careers. Featuring an annual exhibition, online directory, teaching and residency opportunities, artistic challenges, individual portfolio critiques, headshot days, and a number of other professional development events, THOM Collective emphasizes the importance of member collaboration, encouraged to help strengthen the quality of the group.

“This is my first time hosting the THOM Collective exhibition, and it’s been an absolute pleasure to connect with the wonderful public art community in Thomasville,” says Sam McCoy, artist programs manager. “The collective the center has developed brings together many visual artists from different mediums and walks of life. This meaningful collaboration between the community and artists makes me proud to work with such creative community leaders.”

This year’s member exhibition will feature over 40 artists and dozens of pieces of art. The exhibition will be held in the Main Gallery of Thomasville Center for the Arts, at 600 E. Washington Street.

It is free and open to the public. If you are an artist, it’s never too late to join! Program organizers are always happy to answer questions as well as connect artists and the Thomasville community.
