WHO ARE SACES? The Society of Architecture and Civil Engineering Students (SACES) is a non-profit organization situated at and recognized by the University of Malta. Our job is to represent all students of the Faculty for the Built Environment.

The society was set up 41 years ago by a group of architecture students at the time, with the aim of defending students’ rights. Since then, SACES remit has developed and expanded to cover a good number of activities, which help foster a great sense of community between the students at the faculty and give them more opportunitesfor hands-on experience, which is otherwise unattainable within the lecture hall. The activities include a number of woskhops, exhibitions, debates, seminars and even site visits.

Such effort and enthusiasm over four decades has built SACES into one of the most respected student organizations on campus.

THE NOVEMBER WORKSHOP SACES’ FLAGSHIP EVENT Every year, the search begins months beforehand to set up a special location for this highly anticipated event. Previous workshops have been held in unique and historically significant lo-cations such as Fort Ricasoli, Manoel Island, Lazzaretto and Fort Delimara.

Taking place shortly after the beginning of the scholastic year, the workshop involves the par-ticipants being split into teams, each being mentored by two professional architects who help offer significant insight and guidance. The teams meet up separately before the workshop to brainstorm and develop their own idea according to the theme chosen for the workshop by the SCES committee.

Once at the location, the teams work hard to realize their ideas. The results are impressive when considering the short timeframe between conception and completion. Needless to say. Every participant gains valuable creative and practical skills from this workshop.

The workshop is covered both on newspaper reports and on TV news bulletins.

It is also pro-moted through our SACES website and social media accounts. The workshop is inaugurated each year by the Dean of the Faculty for the Built Environment (Prof. Alex Torpiano) and the rel-evant government minister, along with guest lecturers and media.

For the duration of the workshop, SACES’ job is to acquire a location and relevant permits, come up with a theme and structure as well as take care of the overall running of the workshop including provision of necessities such as shelter, food, drinks, tools and materials for the participants to work with.

The workshop is open to all students from the Faculty for the Built Environment.
