P
lein air painting is the largest movement in art history … and growing. In fact, it’s stronger after COVID-19 because we’ve introduced thousands more people to painting. If you study art history, as I have, you’ll learn that evidence of plein air painting goes back a few hundred years. Over time, painters have been inspired to take brush and canvas outside. As a result, small plein air movements have arisen. The best known were Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and the Barbizon School. But each of these involved just a handful of artists. Of course, America has its own rich history with the Hudson River School, which involved sketching, oil sketching, and in some rare cases, full paintings on location. Later, artists like Theodore Robinson, J. Alden Weir, and a small number of others who had lived and studied in Paris brought their impressionist styles back to America. As a result, plein air movements grew up in the East and in the West. But nothing in the history of art has ever seen a movement this large, a movement that has become a lifestyle. I like to say it’s the new golf. Whether amateurs, hobbyists, or professionals, thousands of artists are living the lifestyle of outdoor painting. Like golf, it is mentally challenging and stimulating, it’s social, and it’s relaxing and allows you to forget everything else for a while. It involves being outdoors in beautiful places, provides some exercise, and can even lead to world travel. But unlike golf, it means using your creative brain and is an outlet for developing your artistic ability. And for some it can provide an income, or at least the gratification of being occasionally involved in shows or sales. We are seeing thousands adopt this lifestyle, which means more painters’ groups, more events and shows, and more people being exposed to original art and collecting it. They are also joining the exotic trips PleinAir Magazine has created (Cuba, Africa, New Zealand, and Russia), and attending retreats that are all painting and not workshops, like my Adirondack and Fall Color Week events. Of course they want to be part of a family of artists and want to learn and grow, which is why this year’s Plein Air Convention & Expo is expected to sell out early and to be our biggest ever, attracting about 1,200 people.
Our PleinAir Podcast has also been bringing more people into painting, with over 2 million downloads, and our online training event, PleinAir Live, attracted thousands (and will again this coming spring). Launched because of COVID, my daily show Art School Live has reached several hundred thousand people in over 150 countries. In fact, at each of our events we’re seeing 60 percent brand new people, including people who have never painted in plein air and in many cases have never even picked up a brush. And we’re seeing more young people coming into the plein air lifestyle, which is exciting. In fact, the basics courses we do before each virtual event (PleinAir Live, Realism Live, Pastel Live, and Watercolor Live) have seen massive attendance. We expect that to be the case at the Plein Air Convention this year too. Our role is to not only create experiences that scratch the itch to participate, but to hold up the best examples of quality and encourage growth and high standards. Growth is a must for all painters. This annual guide is evidence of the continued growth and success of this movement. We all play a role in keeping it moving forward, helping it grow, and keeping standards high so plein air does not become known for low-quality artwork, but for high-quality paintings, often created after years or decades of experience and growth. Now we each play a role in keeping plein air festivals and events healthy and growing, especially after losing a couple because of COVID. We can keep this movement growing and alive for generations to come by helping others — reinforcing my goal of helping 1 million people learn to paint — because it changes lives. Rarely do you meet an unhappy painter! Most will never go pro, will never do shows or even show their work, yet with our help they will be introduced to a life as an artist, which is rich and rewarding. Thank you for the role you play.

BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH PAINTING EVENTS & ORGANIZATIONS
A Guide for Artists, Collectors & Organizers

ith many states easing COVID-19 restrictions this year, more and more artists and organizers found ways to bring events back to the communities and collectors who missed them. To talk about their triumphs and the challenges they faced — and to look ahead to what we can all expect in 2022 — I chatted with three prominent members of the plein air community — Catherine Hoke, executive director of the Peninsula School of Art, which presents the Door County Plein Air Festival; Lillian Ansley, co-founder of Olmsted Plein Air Invitational; and Suzie Baker, president of Oil Painters of America (OPA) and an accomplished plein air painter herself. Kelly Kane: How would you describe the engagement and interest in plein air before the pandemic hit? Lillian Ansley: Olmsted operates in an urban setting, and getting the word out has been a real challenge. Where we struggled mostly is with generating the numbers to attract corporate UG6

sponsorship. It’s taken a lot of repetition to build the base. Before the pandemic, in 2019, we had the most profitable — and finally profitable — event. We felt like we’d made it, that five years was the charm. And then the pandemic hit. As we come out of it, we’re really hopeful that we can continue to build on the foundation that we’d established. Catherine Hoke: We just celebrated our 16th year, so I can say from experience that five years is the charm. It really does take that long to educate your constituency, no matter where you’re located. We’re in a rural area, so corporate sponsorship is an incredibly unique challenge for us too, because there are no corporations. Everything here is small business, momand-pop operations. So our corporate sponsorships have mainly come from the national arts community. We had a really great year in 2019 as well. In fact, we’ve seen consistent sales growth, averaging 10 percent year over year. In 2020, we did our best to stay in front of people, and I knew our constituents and our collectors really looked forward to having us back in 2021.
Suzie Baker: I did my first plein air event in 2013, and what I noticed leading up to COVID were more events in general, as well as smaller communities starting events. The beauty of these things is that we’re painting local landscapes, for example, in Door County or the Atlanta area, so we’re not competing with other Wisconsin or Georgia organizations because they have their own landscapes and the people who recognize them. Each event is a unique situation, and there’s a lot of room for growth. As an artist, some years you have a really good outcome at an event, and then sometimes you don’t. You just go and you paint what you love and you hope people buy it. And then COVID went and changed everything. Hoke: Even though Door County, the “Cape Cod of the Midwest,” is a tourist destination, attracting visitors from Chicago and Minneapolis, it’s a 10-mile-wide and 30-mile-long peninsula. We’ve got to continually drive people here to come and purchase art, to bring new collectors to the table. So our greatest challenge is always to continue to open it up to new people.

Baker: So, Cathy, how do you do that if you’re growing 10 percent year over year? You’ve obviously got some secret sauce you’re pouring over your event there. Hoke: I don’t know what the secret sauce is. I think as a destination, we’re fortunate that Door County continues to grow in popularity. One thing I think we do pretty well is connect the artists to the community. So you find people who are visiting and had no idea the event was happening until they see the artists out and about, and some of those folks tell me that next year they’re booking their stay to correspond with the event. We’ve also had people who had no interaction with the event at all during the week and then just stumble past our live auction in the park on Saturday morning and end up underneath the tent, bidding up a painting to $5,000. Having a really good connection to our local hotels and lodgers, the Visitor’s Bureau, and all of those kinds of things really helps to support the event as well. Baker: You also have the Quick Paint competition that is separate from the Invitational, right? Hoke: Yes, the Dockside Competition, which really creates a kind of Cinderella story. The featured artists themselves vote on Best in Show from UG8
the paintings created at the Dockside event, and the winner gets an automatic invite for the next year. So it’s a great way for emerging and up-andcoming artists to be seen and to compete for a slot in what is an invitational event. Baker: When I got the invitation to be at Door County this year, I read through the list of other artists who were going to be there, and I had this involuntary visceral, emotional reaction. I just welled up, realizing I was going to be able to see all these people. You know, I thought I was doing okay, visiting with people on Zoom and making lemonade out of lemons, but when I realized that I was going to get to be with other artists again, it was so exciting. Kane: How would you say your events and your artist friends have fared over the past 12 months? Baker: I’m in a book club with a handful of other artists — Jane Hunt, Kathleen Hudson, Brienne Brown, and Lyn Boyer. I asked them this question in preparation for our conversation. And all of us, financially, had the same year — or maybe even a little better — as the previous one. So even if gross sales were down for some, expenses were also down. We found that a lot of people were at home, wanting something nice
behind them in a Zoom meeting. They thought, “Well, I’m not going to Europe, so I’ll buy a painting from my favorite artist.” I had a lot of direct sales, some from galleries and some from events. One of my biggest paintings that appeared on the cover of PleinAir Magazine [April-May 2020 issue] sold at Olmsted. I’ve also had a lot of commissions, and I don’t think I’m an outlier. I think that’s been the experience of a number of artists this past year. There’s a phrase in German that means “forced luck,” and in this case, I’d use it to describe the situation we all found ourselves in, where we were forced to learn Zoom, increase the digital marketing of our work, and reach out more to collectors and students. A lot of us did quite a bit of teaching as well. From an OPA standpoint, our WetPaint competition turned into an international WetPaint competition, with people from all over the world participating and coming onto Facebook Live over the course of a couple of days to share their work. We’ve done a series of Lunch and Learns; we started a Virtual Museum Road Trip, where curators introduce us to some of their paintings and share interesting things about the work; and in June, thanks to the book club I’m part of, we had Ross King talk to us about his book on Claude Monet and his water lily paintings, Mad Enchantment.

So it’s that forced luck again, where we had this bad situation but we also had all this good come out of it. Hoke: Outside of plein air events, we changed some of our programming, where we had a critique group that met once a month, and when we moved it to virtual, we had participants join in from New Mexico, California, and Vermont. We would never have had that previously. I think there are some things that we learned and communities that we connected with that we never would have otherwise, and those things will continue. The biggest takeaway for me from the past year and then some was the support for the arts that we felt as an arts organization. It was such a gift to see how loved and how supported we all were in a time when we didn’t have any choices about how to survive, and people stepped up and made that happen. Kane: So what does the future look like? What’s next? Ansley: Despite all the incredible technological and logistical hurdles we all overcame to keep events going virtually throughout the pandemic, there is nothing like being in real time watching an artist create a painting, and that is what keeps
Jill Steenhuis captures the sunset [Olmsted].
the momentum and excitement going and brings new people in. Engaging and connecting with that next generation of collectors has been and continues to be one of our biggest challenges. But I’m up for it! Baker: I think when events make opportunities for children and young people to get involved, and to draw in minorities and people of color who haven’t had a lot of access to the arts, we all benefit. Plein air already reaches people who wouldn’t necessarily go into a gallery or into a museum, but they happen upon an event or a group of painters out painting, and now they have a connection to the arts. So I think plein air as an art form is in a perfect position to reach out in a way that others aren’t. Hoke: I would agree, and I think one of the things that’s happened this past year or so is more people have connected to the outdoors, because it’s the one place we’ve all been safe. I think there’s opportunity there for plein air painters to make connections with the places, like parks and other outdoor spaces, that have gained renewed appreciation with their work. And by doing so, they can tap into collectors who may consider themselves the silent sports enthusiasts — the backpacker, the canoer — but who haven’t
necessarily considered themselves art appreciators or collectors. And that’s one of the things we can continue to educate people about — buying art, collecting art, and helping them make those connections from the landscape to the artwork. And I agree, Lilian, there’s nothing like seeing a painting being created in front of you. I like to say that plein air painting is the symphony of the art world, because it’s a shared experience with the audience, whereas painting in the studio is a personal, independent experience. So our task as organizers and artists is education, introducing new people to the artwork, and making it approachable. At Door County, we serve hot dogs in the park. Enjoying and collecting art isn’t just for an exclusive class drinking champagne and eating fancy hors d’oeuvres. And it doesn’t mean the art is any less valuable or any less collectible; it’s just about putting it in front of a different group of people. Baker: And then they have a story around that piece. They know the location; they saw the painting being created and got to talk to the artist about it; they have that connection. It’s not just something they bought and stuck on the wall; they have the experience, the story. That’s the wonderful thing about plein air painting. Ultimate Guide 2022/www.outdoorpainter.com
