Plein Air Painting Is the Largest Movement in Art History … and Growing

f you study art history, as I have, you’ll learn that evidence of plein air painting goes back a few hundred years. Over time, painters have been inspired to take brush and canvas outside. As a result, small plein air movements have arisen. The best known were Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and the Barbizon School. But each of these involved just a handful of artists. Of course, America has its own rich history with the Hudson River School, which involved sketching, oil sketching, and in some rare cases, full paintings on location. Later, artists like Theodore Robinson, J. Alden Weir, and a small number of others who had lived and studied in Paris brought their impressionist styles back to America. As a result, plein air movements grew up in the East and in the West. But nothing in the history of art has ever seen a movement this large, a movement that has become a lifestyle. I like to say it’s the new golf. Whether amateurs, hobbyists, or professionals, thousands of artists are living the lifestyle of outdoor painting. Like golf, it is mentally challenging and stimulating, it’s social, and it’s relaxing and allows you to forget everything else for a while. It involves being outdoors in beautiful places, provides some exercise, and can even lead to world travel. But unlike golf, it uses your creative brain and is an outlet for developing your artistic ability. And for some it can provide an income, or at least the gratification of being occasionally involved in shows or sales. We are seeing thousands adopt this lifestyle, which means more painters’ groups, more events and shows, and more people being exposed to and collecting original art. They are also joining the exotic trips PleinAir Magazine has created (Cuba, Africa, New Zealand), and attending retreats that are all painting and not workshops, like my Adirondack and Fall Color Week events. Of course they want to be part of a community and want to learn and grow, which is why the Plein Air Convention & Expo is now attracting about a thousand people each year. Our PleinAir Podcast has also been bringing more people into painting. Like last time, we expect a hundred or so people to show up at our next convention who have never painted before and who’ll buy all their supplies at the event. And we’re seeing more young people coming into the plein air lifestyle. Our role is to not only create experiences that scratch their itch to participate, but to hold up the best examples of quality and encourage growth and high standards. This annual guide is evidence of the growth and success of this movement. We all play a role in keeping it moving forward and helping it grow, while keeping standards high so plein air does not become known for low-quality artwork, but for high-quality paintings, often created after years or decades of experience and growth. We can keep this movement growing and alive for generations to come by helping others paint — reinforcing my goal of helping 1 million people learn to paint, because it changes lives. Most will never go pro, will never do shows or even show their work, yet with our help they will be introduced to a life as an artist, which is rich and rewarding. Thank you for the role you play.

BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH PAINTING EVENTS & ORGANIZATIONS

A Guide for Artists, Collectors & Organizers

W

ith states implementing social distancing guidelines and travel restrictions in response to COVID-19, organizers across the country had to cancel, postpone, or pivot quickly to reimagine their 2020 plein air events. So what can artists, collectors, and organizers expect in 2021? Representatives from three top plein air events share the lessons they learned from this extraordinary year and how you, too, can look ahead to a fun and prosperous plein air season. PleinAir: Why was it important to hold an event (no matter how different) in 2020? Lillian Ansley (Olmsted Plein Air Invitational): As one of the first events of the year, we faced a hard decision even before COVID-19 had a stronghold on our community here in Atlanta. Given that many of our artists on the West Coast had been hit hard, moving on with a virtual event in April just felt like the right thing to do. Marie Nuthall (Plein Air Easton): After talking to our board of directors, sponsors, and friends of UG6 Ultimate Guide 2021/www.pleinairmagazine.com

PAE donors enjoy a special outdoor exhibit.

Plein Air Easton, it became clear that the community knew that, after seeing so many beloved local and national events coming to the conclusion of ‘No,’ the Avalon Foundation [the event organizers] could get to ‘Yes’ safely and creatively in July. Rosemary Swimm (Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational): From the beginning of the pandemic, LPAPA has been determined to push forward and do everything in our power to continue bringing the arts to the world. By moving forward virtually and putting our best efforts into presenting LPAPA’s events, we were able to provide a sense of balance to people’s lives. We were able to continue to support LPAPA’s programs, and, most importantly, we were able to provide our artists an outlet for their work and a source of income that had been taken away from them, cancelled show by cancelled show. We truly believe art heals the soul. PleinAir: How did this year’s event differ from past events? What aspects did you have to eliminate? What new components did you add this year?

Nuthall (Easton): In-person with a small virtual component, this year’s PAE was different in every single way. Marquee events didn’t happen (no Collectors Party, Awards Ceremony, Small Painting Sunday, or Quick Draw), and everything that remained was reimagined. We broke down the festival into its most basic components: competition artists and paint-outs. First and foremost, we decided that no matter what PAE looked like for 2020, the 58 competition artists juried in would be guaranteed spots for 2021. With a prevailing theme of flexibility, the next step was to poll the artists and determine their comfort level for traveling (almost half of the 58 live in Maryland or neighboring states). It was important for us to stress to the artists that their decision to participate did not impact their standing as a competition artist for 2021. We explained that this year’s event wasn’t going to be a competition at all — certainly not like one they would have experienced or heard about in the past. For the artists, it was a chance to attend an organized paint-out, get the lay of the land (if they hadn’t been to Easton before), exhibit their work, and hopefully sell some art. Originally,

A D V I C E F O R 2 0 21 EVENT ORGANIZERS

Tim Beall (PAE)

Be flexible — in the planning of your event and its execution, in your expectations of yourself and others, and in your vision of what a successful event is.

Take time to identify your key stakeholders and focus on serving them the very best you can.

Be clear about your goals. Realize that you will not be able to do it all. Watch out for comments like, “Well, we did it this way in the past.” Everything about your event may (and probably will) be different.

Be prepared for everything you do to take longer — every phone call you make, every element of the event you organize. Factor that extra time and additional expense into your planning, as you will likely have to rethink just about every procedure you’re used to. It’s important, though, to take time to bring stakeholders along. People have been suffering and are scared, but they’re eager for good news and want to be engaged.

Be prepared to amend your plans and go with the flow. Try to laugh as often as you can, and be kind to those around you. They are stressed too.

Be prepared for the joy that will follow and the depths of appreciation for your efforts.

Definitely incorporate a virtual component into your event. The range of exposure is up to you — from simply live-streaming an exhibit to putting dollars behind an online sales catalog, and so many opportunities in between. Why wouldn’t you want a worldwide audience to have the opportunity to see what and who you’re promoting? Art is ultimately healing, and there is a need for that now more than ever.

we didn’t promise awards; however, due to the generosity of Plein Air Easton supporters and avid collectors Hali and Scott Asplundh, $500 awards were given each night for three nights in a row recognizing Best in Show for paintings completed in four separate locations. Ansley (Olmsted): We led the way with an online gallery catalog, which provided an avenue for selling the artists’ work that many other events copied. We also partnered with a local nonprofit that was responding to COVID-19 in our local community. Everything we did was new — and it was entirely virtual. The event kicked off online with a collectors’ preview sale of the 2020 paintings we already had on hand for the scheduled live event. After a period of one week, three additional paintings by each of the 29 participating artists were added to the Invitational gallery, and from that compilation, the Competition gallery was drawn. In addition to the galleries and competition, fans of the Invitational were treated to a variety of unique opportunities to engage with the participating artists and jurors, including Facebook Live demos, podcasts, videos, and articles posted on the event’s website. Swimm (Laguna): Our 22nd Annual Laguna Beach Plein Air Invitational in October was primarily virtual, with only a small number of local artists able to paint outdoors. We provided all 25 of our artists with more than 700 professionally shot images of our iconic locales to use as reference for their paintings. If they had their own images of the area, they were allowed to use those as well. All of our events were presented to the public virtually, including the Quick Draw, the Artists’ Plein Talks, the Experts’ Plein Talks, the Gala Celebration, and the Sunday Award Winner Plein Talks and Demos. UG8 Ultimate Guide 2021/www.pleinairmagazine.com

Finished PAE paintings are on display in Oxford, Maryland.

We did our best to keep all of our traditional events, but unfortunately, due to our inability to provide what we felt would be a safe environment for those involved, we were unable to present one of our favorite parts of the Invitational — the Kids Paint Out and the Next Generation Paint Out. We are looking forward to being able to hold those events again next year.

Nuthall (Easton): Our collectors and community were incredibly supportive. Everyone who participated was sincerely grateful that we were able to hold an in-person event that was carefully and safely executed. Because of the extent to which we reached out in the months preceding the event, the stakeholders, the community, and the collectors felt more part of the team than ever.

PleinAir: How did you keep artists, collectors, and the community engaged in this year’s activities?

Ansley (Olmsted): Collectors loved it, and so did non-collectors. We got so many e-mails from the community thanking us for providing beauty, hope, and inspiration during a dark time. We took a very emotional journey with our artists and collectors this year.

Nuthall (Easton): Beginning in April, in the middle of our tightest lockdown, we started hosting Zoom meetings with various stakeholders, collectors, donors, artists, and volunteers. We brainstormed ideas and spent a lot of time just listening. Throughout our planning process, we made efforts to craft events that served our partnering organizations as well as our vendors, including the caterers and graphic artists, who we knew were being hard hit by the pandemic. We did everything in our power to provide a high level of customer service and safety for our staff, artists, patrons, and volunteers. We pivoted one of our main events to become a drive-through exhibition. We provided special private shopping hours, brought paintings out for people to view from their cars, drove paintings to collectors’ homes for them to view on their walls before purchasing, and also live-streamed events each evening to allow those at home to participate. Swimm (Laguna): We did a great deal of research and on-the-spot learning of various virtual platforms to find those that would work seamlessly for us and be as user-friendly as possible for all involved. PleinAir: What feedback did you receive from collectors and the community about this year’s event?

Swimm (Laguna): We had nothing but wonderful responses from everyone. The community embraced our events, and collectors were delighted to be able to see all of the work. Going virtual allowed LPAPA to reach more than just our local communities; we were able to reach people across the country. We even had individuals watching our events internationally as well. PleinAir: What feedback did you receive from participating artists about the experience? Nuthall (Easton): Artists were overwhelmingly positive and grateful for the experience. Here are a few of the e-mail comments we received from artists: “As an artist who has participated in 14 PAE competitions, I believe this was your finest hour. I thank you for the tremendous amount of work you all undertook to provide an opportunity for us to have a show. The complexity, amount of planning, and effort this year took is staggering to contemplate. You pulled it off magnificently!” — John Brandon Sills

John Brandon Sills demo (PAE)

“I found that, even while social distancing, folks in Talbot County made the time to come over and share positive words of encouragement. The dedication of the Easton group and the volunteers working day and evening, carting our paintings from place to place, was a giant undertaking…. Teamwork and going with the flow were the only ways to approach the scale of this major accomplishment, and I wholeheartedly thank each of you.” — Mary Negron “This year’s event was so uplifting for everyone involved — certainly a highlight in this dim time.” — Mary Viega Swimm (Laguna): When we knew that we were going to have to transition to a virtual event, I called each and every artist and asked if they would stick with us, explaining that no matter what, we would continue our tradition and present the best event, with the best artists. LPAPA was grateful that all of the artists embraced our event and the opportunity to present their works to collectors. We also reached out to our sponsors and supporters and explained our desire to move forward and carry on the tradition. PleinAir: How were sales compared to previous years, or to revised expectations? Nuthall (Easton): We projected that sales would be down 75 percent from our record-breaking 2019 Festival (PAE 2019 had posted total art sales of $416K, with 367 paintings sold). We are proud to report that this year we sold 179 paintings for a total of $238K in art sales, which represents 57 percent of our historical sales volume. With a truncated event and only 58 percent of our total juried artists able to participate, we considered this a great win for everyone. In addition, every artist that participated sold artwork while they were here.

Olena Babak (PAE)

Ansley (Olmsted): In the end, the event hugely exceeded expectations. It wasn’t our top year, but it was close. Swimm (Laguna): We knew that without a physical event and the energy it creates, sales would be a challenge. We live-streamed our Quick Draw via Zoom and Facebook, and attendance was wonderful, as were sales, which exceeded our goal. For our Gala Celebration, we sent all our attendees Gourmet Gala Boxes to open and enjoy with us from home. Awards were presented and sales conducted via an auction site. These, too, exceeded our goal. Our Sunday event is typically open to the public, enabling them to mix and mingle with the artists as they view the artwork. Unfortunately, we were not able to pull off that format this year, but did offer a fantastic Plein Talk with our award winners, as well as artists’ demos, with sales continuing on the auction site. Sunday sales were a little less than we had hoped for, but still in the acceptable range. PleinAir: What was the single most important thing you did to pull off this year’s event? Nuthall (Easton): We took the time to really engage our stakeholders. We spent hours on Zoom talking to collectors, donors, and artists, trying to understand what they wanted out of this year’s event, what mattered to them, and what their risk tolerances were. We heard great ideas and we were able to bring everyone along with our new concepts. These conversations allowed us to identify clear goals for this year’s events and made it easier to make difficult decisions about where to focus our attentions and where to let go. Ansley (Olmsted): It was such a chaotic and intense time, with schools being closed and all of us just beginning to comes to grip with COVID-19.

We decided to relinquish all rules and restrictions for the artists. Swimm (Laguna): We knew that this would be a major undertaking, but the fact that we had presented smaller shows and events prior to this helped us prepare better. We also did practice runs with the artists to see how certain elements like the Quick Draw would work and to make sure that each participating artist was comfortable with the video setups they were going to need. Because of all the moving parts involved in the Gala Celebration, we enlisted the services of a production company and worked with them to make sure that we could do everything we wanted to. PleinAir: Are there any lessons you learned or strategies you used this year that you will carry forward into future events (even when things are back to normal)? Nuthall (Easton): This year was a lesson in problemsolving and in creative reinvention. It served as a good reminder that you can explore new things, even after 16 years. We offered a lot of decentralized educational opportunities (meaning smaller demos across the county versus in our downtown). They were well attended and strengthened partnerships. People appreciated the intimacy and the ease of attending. I can see PAE continuing to plan smaller events with this in mind going forward. Swimm (Laguna): We certainly look forward to hosting a physical event, but by affording us amazing outreach, this year’s experience showed us the benefit of having a virtual aspect as well. That’s something we’ll want to incorporate into future events.
