EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR ARTISTS A

rt schools, workshops, and ateliers have always been important to artists striving to meet others with a shared passion and to learn new methods and principles. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, American artists flocked to Shinnecock Hills on Long Island to study with William Merritt Chase (1849–1916). Modeling the plan on the plein air schools then popular in Europe, Jane Ralston Hoyt opened the Shinnecock Hills Summer School of Art in 1891. For more than a decade, Chase served as its director, educating a generation of artists dedicated to working directly from nature. Today, artists looking for a way to reinvigorate their process or capture a more authentic, spontaneous response to their subject have a range of opportunities to choose from. Numerous prominent painters are happy to pass along their knowledge in workshops that last anywhere from three to 14 days, with the opportunity to travel within the United States or abroad. Most often, these workshops include painting demonstrations by the instructor, William Merritt Chase offered his last class one-on-one assistance, and critiques of student work. Also in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, in 1914. helpful and inspiring, fellow students can provide infor(William Merritt Chase Archive, Parish Art mation about other workshop opportunities, travel advice, Museum, Southampton, NY) and painting tips, as well as offer a source of support and camaraderie. Art schools and ateliers present a more formal approach, typically with a longer commitment. Historically, ateliers put a strong emphasis on learning to draw well, focusing on still life or human anatomy. The attention to drawing remains, but many of today’s ateliers also address the landscape and its recurring forms. Generally, students work alongside masters in their studios for years to hone their skills. No matter which opportunity you’re considering, it’s important to do your research. Find out as much as you can about the qualities the instructor emphasizes in his or her own work, as well as their teaching style — do they primarily like to lecture or demo for the class, or do they also offer individual advice to students as the participants work on their own paintings? What is the daily routine — how much time each day is allotted for the students to work on their own pieces? If plein air experience is a priority for you, how much time is spent outdoors? What have past students said about the experience? Artists never stop learning. Each new painting brings new discoveries. On the pages that follow, we’ve compiled myriad opportunities for you to take the first (or next) step on your painting journey. You’re sure to find one or more workshops or classes that are right for you. KELLY KANE Editor-in-Chief PleinAir Magazine

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR NEXT ART WORKSHOP Tips for everything from choosing the right opportunity for you to maximizing the experience days, weeks, and months later.

James Coe teaching a workshop at Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum

A

rt workshops provide opportunities for people of all skill levels to explore their creative interests. Whether you want to shake things up and explore new artistic pathways or learn more about a specific technique, medium, or style, there are plenty of options from which you can choose. Generally, workshops are three- to 14-day-long educational programs, sometimes requiring participants to travel some distance to attend and to stay in a motel or school dorm. There are some standard routines in most workshops, including demonstrations by the instructor, critiques of student work, and one-on-one assistance for the students, but other aspects of these classes will vary from one session to another and from one teacher to another.

As with any educational program that requires an expenditure of time and money, it is recommended that artists find out as much as they can in advance about the instructor’s teaching skills, style, daily routine, level of organization, and what impression he or she has left with people who have participated in previous workshops offered by the instructor. In addition to the lessons drawn from the instructor, one of the benefits of a workshop will be the opportunity to meet informally with other students and make friends with people who share one’s interest in art. The participants will pick up a lot of helpful tips about painting and professional activities, and they will be comforted by the fact that just about everyone else feels the same anxieties, confusions, and

joy. As one workshop participant put it, being part of a workshop is like studying a language for years and finally visiting a country where it is spoken.

HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU Identify your skill level. If you’ve never taken a class before or have taken several but still don’t feel you’re where you need to be, you are a beginner. If you’ve mastered basic skills and have some level of proficiency, you are intermediate. Even if you consider yourself a professional artist, you can hone your craft and meet other professionals by continuing your studies. Decide what kind of art you want to create. Is there a particular medium you want to learn

more about, or one in which you want to further develop your skills? Is there a particular style or approach you’re drawn to most — impressionism, realism, abstraction? Research workshops both near and far. Start by checking out local college, university, or community education courses. If you have art clubs or art societies in your area, they may offer classes as well. Nearby artists may hold regular classes or have opportunities for one-on-one education. You might also consider taking a workshop from an artist you admire even if it means traveling to another city or region. Read the class descriptions carefully. How much time will you spend actually painting versus watching the instructor demonstrate? Is the class studio- or plein-air based, or a mix of both? How large will the class be? Does the instructor provide hands-on instruction? How many new materials will you need to purchase for the class? If you’re still unsure whether a class is right for you, reach out to the instructor directly. Talk to them about your skill level and experience, what you hope to get out of the workshop, and the way you learn best to see if their class will be a good fit.

HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF A PAINTING WORKSHOP Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Most instructors encourage students to raise questions throughout the class, so don’t be shy. You can often learn quite a bit from another student’s question, and they’ll learn from yours as well.

Kathleen Dunphy demonstrating for workshop participants

Block out distractions. Turn off your phone notifications, and don’t be tempted to peek until break time. Set aside this time to focus exclusively on your art and development as a painter. Take notes (but don’t overdo it). You don’t want to have your nose in your notebook when the instructor demonstrates a crucial part of their process. Keep your attention on the instructor as they work. If you’re afraid you’ll forget something important, jot down a word or two to trigger your memory later, and fill in your notes then. Be open. Every artist approaches their process a little bit differently. Even if you’ve heard a technique or principle explained a number of times, one instructor’s description may be just what you need to hear, just when you need to hear it. Maximize the experience. As you work through what you’ve learned, incorporate those techniques and approaches that fit with your own goals and artistic tastes, and leave the others behind. In the days, weeks, and months following the workshop, continue to develop and explore those elements of your painting as you improve and develop your distinct personal style.

HOW TO DEVELOP A PERSONAL STYLE Style may be both the most important and the most elusive aspect of painting. It requires mastering the fundamentals — drawing, shapes, values, edges, perspective, scale, balance, harmony, and surface development — but also searching for what will express the artist’s individual response to a sub-

ject as well as his or her ability to communicate that response to people who view the work. Most artists begin their careers exploring variations on their teachers’ styles, or they imitate the style of a wellknown artist. As they experiment with materials and ideas over time, they change their palette of colors, procedures, and subject matter. In most cases, an identifiable personal style of painting will evolve without conscious effort. It just seems to happen as you make decisions about your favorite places to paint, the colors you prefer to use, the manner in which you apply paint to a substrate, and the amount of detail you want to include in a painted image. If you ask most professional painters how they arrived at their style, they will mention the influence of images seen early in their lives, especially those reproduced on posters or prints or in books or magazines. They might even recall one specific moment when they saw a painting in a gallery or museum that motivated them to say to themselves, “Someday I want to be able to paint like that.” Those early impressions and ambitions linger in the mind, taking artists on a journey to find their own method for painting in the manner of Rembrandt, Wyeth, de Kooning, or Cézanne. In the end, their ultimate professional style of painting is founded in those early visions. Knowing this, a person can make a conscious and deliberate attempt to eventually “paint like that” with his or her own variation on a teacher’s or master’s signature style.

I heard others say similar things but Linda breaks it down, shows you how and her feedback is a huge part of the learning process.” - Nanci Cook “Linda took me back to basics. I now hear that my paintings have such depth and my colors sing.” - Mary Carter

You not only are a wonderful artist, you are an exceptional teacher. You have enormous patience, no matter what the student’s skill level is. You make each person feel like they are special....I feel like I took a giant leap forward.” – Claire T.
