rt instruction extends far beyond formal educational institutions. Today, we have a variety of options for beginning or extending our art education — from years devoted to atelier study to a four-week course or weekend workshop. Which opportunity we choose depends on our personality, what we want to achieve, and how much time and money we can devote to it.

Historically, art was taught in Europe via “ateliers” — French for “workshops.” In this system, burgeoning artists worked alongside masters in their studios for several years. At the core of their study was a mastery of drawing, followed by a concentration on painting or sculpture, using traditional methods and skills associated with realism. Although ateliers fell out of favor in the mid-20th century, an appreciation for the qualities they promoted was rekindled in the 1970s, and this means of study enjoyed a resurgence.

Modern ateliers follow many of the same teaching principles, with an emphasis on learning to draw well. But while their predecessors focused on still life or human anatomy, many now also address the landscape and its recurring forms. For those interested in this course of study, less formal courses and workshops likewise provide access to prominent contemporary painters willing to pass on their knowledge.

Workshops generally last anywhere from three to 14 days, and may offer the opportunity to travel within the United States or abroad. Typical routines include painting demonstrations by the instructor, one-on-one assistance, and critiques of student work. Not part of the organized curriculum, but no less important, are the camaraderie and support of fellow participants.

United in a passion for painting and love of art, many students form lifelong friendships. Often, these newfound friends are a great resource for information about other workshop opportunities, travel advice, and helpful painting tips. If nothing else, it’s comforting to know that everyone shares the same doubts and fears — and to have someone to celebrate the successes with as well.

No matter which opportunity seems right for you, it’s important to do your research. Find out as much as you can about the qualities the instructor emphasizes in his or her own work, as well as their teaching style — do they primarily like to lecture or demo for the class, or do they also offer individual advice to students as the participants work on their own paintings? What is the daily routine — how much time each day is allotted for the students to work on their own pieces? If plein air experience is a priority for you, how much time is spent outdoors? What have past students said about the experience?

A number of our best-loved artists passed through the studio of Charles Gleyre, including Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, and James Abbott McNeill Whistler. The atelier of Léon Bonnat produced another star-studded lineup of artists, each displaying their own unique style, including Marius Vasselon, Raoul Dufy, Thomas Eakins, John Singer Sargent, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

Closer to home, Frederic Edwin Church studied at the side of Thomas Cole for two years, then passed on his knowledge to students of his own. Indeed, you can trace the lineage of many Western European and North American masters to an atelier or similar course of study.

Fortunately, that rich tradition continues today. The following pages are chock-full of opportunities for you to take the first (or next) step on your painting journey. Which one is right for you?

I

never aspired to teach art. A stubborn introvert as a teen, I hated public speaking, plus I never wanted to hear my own teacher’s comments about my work. Fate intervened about 20 years ago, however, in the form of several women who saw my paintings on exhibit and pestered me until I agreed to lead them in a class.

I was shocked to find that I actually enjoyed it — and so did the students. Today, I see about 60 students per week for local classes and conduct travel workshops in the United States and abroad.

Without my teaching experience, I know I would not be the artist I am today.

BENEFITS OF TEACHING • Clarification: Concepts are clarified in your mind as you teach them to others.

• Reliability: Predictable income supplements art sales that fluctuate.

• Disciplined time to paint: The practice of consistently producing a demo for students (regardless of inspiration or light conditions) has helped me to focus in the studio, and to perform faster outdoors for plein air work.

• Travel: As a teacher, all travel expenses are paid for workshops.

• A chance to give back: Art is a wonderful thing to share. Artists through the centuries have passed along knowledge student-to-teacher, and many painters feel this is fulfilling part of what it means to be an artist.

STRATEGIES FOR THE BEGINNING TEACHER • Volunteer: Teach a class, give a demo, or offer assistance at a local school or senior center.

• Prepare: When I started, I tested every demo in advance and made handouts to organize my thoughts. (I didn’t make much per hour in these early days, as I spent a huge amount of time preparing.)

• Start small: Teach a friend or relative, then ask for feedback on how the process was for them.

• Remember what it felt like to be a student: Would you rather “copy from that stack of National Geographics” (as one teacher instructed me)? Or would you rather draw from life, and be taught line, shape, and color with varied media?

In hindsight, I am grateful I had talented teachers and ones who disappointed me. I learned from both.

CLASS NUTS AND BOLTS — AND WHERE TO GET STUDENTS • Have a good website: List your classes, show examples of your work, and have a bio of accomplishments. Provide a supply list and links to resources.

• Maintain a mailing list: Send an e-mail newsletter about upcoming workshops, classes, and exhibits.

• Network with a school, art store, or art foundation: Staff will often handle enrollment, advertise classes, and have a pre-existing student base. Have a contract so expectations are clear.

Organizations take a percentage of the tuition.

• Try something new: Consider a Sip and Paint, where the instructor shows a final painting, and students follow steps to completion while sipping wine. I have not done this myself, but they are popular and it could be a good way to break into teaching, which brings me to my next point:

• Know your strengths and weaknesses: I dislike step-by-step teaching where everyone paints the same image with the same colors. Instead, I like to paint on location and show students how to see and organize what is in front of them.

• Know what to charge: Fees vary widely.

Tuition will depend on your experience, your resume, geographical location, travel costs, the current economy, and demand. One way to figure your rate is hourly. A per-head fee is another way to structure tuition. Research fees at local art schools.

• Get your business in order: Seek advice from professionals, including an insurance agent and accountant. In addition to a business license, an EIN tax number, and a business checking account, you should have a business insurance policy for liability. Make sure your insurance policy covers you overseas if needed. Look into becoming an LLC. Check for any county or residential restrictions or permits. Workshop students should have travel insurance.

APPRECIATING THE ARTISTIC PROCESS • Embrace mistakes in student art: Most students (especially beginners) think they need a lot of one-on-one attention because they are afraid to make a mistake. Mistakes are part of the learning process. Encourage independent painting. Don’t hover near the student with instant corrections.

Tailor advice to each student based on individual needs.

• Encourage individuality: Not all students will want to paint the same thing, or even do your lesson for the day.

• Give your students permission to play: Unfortunately, getting “a perfect trophy painting” is often a student’s main goal. Instead, encourage exploration.

• The bottom line: Easel-side personalized assistance at intervals in the painting process is more important overall than telling students how to do something. Individual advice (about artists to study, ideas to explore, techniques to try) is the best way to have students move forward on their journey in art.

PITFALLS TO AVOID • Don’t overload students with too much information: Break things down into manageable steps. Offer focused tasks for the day (for example, negative shapes, aerial perspective, or mixing fall tree colors). Consider how one lesson might flow into the next to build skills. For example, focus on a portrait of a tree (shapes) to start, then a study in aerial perspective (atmospheric color), and a mountain scene for the final lesson, which combines all the prior concepts.

• Allow proper time: Students need time to clean up and chitchat as people exit the class.

• Have a cancellation policy: If you don’t, you may find that you are wasting your time preparing for lessons that do not happen.

• Expect the unexpected: I am astonished at the new ways the universe likes to surprise me in class. Try to handle issues such as illness, personality clashes, and equipment snafus with grace.

Understand that many students just want to do well in a workshop or class, and strong feelings of anxiety or insecurity can pop up.

• The customer is (almost) always right: Don’t forget that you are a hired person offering a service. Students have paid for your time, and they have a choice in with whom to study. Go the extra mile for your students, but understand that there are times when you can’t please everyone. Solicit feedback, and listen.

• Ask before touching or correcting a student’s painting: Personally, I think that because we are in a visual line of pursuit, a visual correction is a better, faster way of showing a student what to do versus just talking about it. I often paint on students’ paintings. Most students will be fine with it, but a few are not. Respect preferences.

• Have patience: As the instructor, it is your job to understand the concept. Students may be hearing it for the first time. You may have to repeat yourself many times and reinforce the concept with varied examples.

• Don’t do a demo that is too long or too perfect: Aim for one-hour maximum; a half-hour is better. Show enough to demonstrate a concept, but get students working as soon as possible to reinforce the learning process. Demonstrating a larger, more time-consuming painting on occasion is okay.

• Continue to learn: Rediscover what it’s like to be a student and take a workshop with an instructor you admire, or try something new that will expand your skill set — this will help you teach a wide variety of students. Immerse yourself in the joy of learning. It’s lovely to watch someone else do a demo, critique, or lecture, or handle a class problem. Read all you can about art, experiment with new ideas, and visit exhibitions.

• Connect with other artists: Plein air events, art conventions, and lectures are great places to share ideas and meet other artists. Take a trip with a few art friends to a museum or an art-rich environment, such as New York City.

• Co-teach a workshop with a friend: Share ideas and have fun, with only half the responsibility of the teaching load.

• Learn from your students: Keep an open mind and you will see that in the end you learn as much from your students as, hopefully, they learn from you.

The curious brain is one and the same as the artistic brain. For instructor and student alike, it’s important to see learning as a journey rather than an end goal.

What to Consider When Seeking a Workshop or Class Taking a class or workshop is making an investment in yourself and your artwork. Here are a few tips to make sure you get the most from the experience.

FINDING THE RIGHT ONE FOR YOU • Find artists you admire online. Sign up to be notified about workshops or classes.

• Target artistic goals — do you want to learn to draw more accurately, loosen up, or approach value more confidently?

• Is location important? Travel desires can narrow your choice.

• Examine the ratio of travel to art making. Tourist stops + multiple locations = less painting time.

• Study accommodations to make sure they meet any special needs (no stairs, private rooms, etc.).

• Ask friends for recommendations. Look for blog postings that describe the experience of a class or teacher.

• Beware the “wait until I’m ready” mentality. You may never be fully ready. The purpose of a workshop is to immerse yourself in art in a learning environment.

OVERCOMING FIRST-TIME JITTERS • Remember that everyone started as a beginner; nobody is born painting.

• Skill levels are often subjective. If you are unsure about the skill level required for a workshop or class, or want to know if you would fit in, ask. If a workshop is described as intermediate/advanced, a motivated beginner can often prepare by taking a basic class, reading books, watching videos, and practicing techniques. Enthusiastic students with a positive attitude are a joy to have in class.

• Art is like swimming; you are either in the water or not. There are many skills to acquire, and you can learn them with practice. Even a natural swimmer can improve with tips from a great coach.

MAXIMIZING YOUR EXPERIENCE • Organize your materials well ahead of the workshop. Examine the supply list and order any items needed. Try everything out before you travel (paints, backpack, easel, etc.).

• Don’t overpack, and if traveling by air, research how to pack art supplies for an airplane.

• Reconcile with the fact that the paintings you make in class may not reflect your current skill level. This can be very difficult if you have a lot of prior art experience and training, but growth happens by working outside your comfort zone.

• Speak up if you need help. Also, it’s nice to give feedback if you are learning and having a good time.

• Take care of yourself. Bring your favorite healthy snacks and food.

Take a nap if you feel exhausted.

• Banish competitive thoughts or feelings that your work is not good enough. No awards are given. The prize is knowledge and experience.

Appreciate your fellow students’ creativity and the many ways a subject can be painted.

• Have an open mind. Be humble and don’t have answers. Be curious.

Play.

• Be fully present at the workshop. Put away digital devices. Handwritten notes and sketches allow more data to enter your brain than the crutch of many photos.

• Continue your artistic growth at home. New skills require practice to become ingrained.
