THE 2020 ENERGY CANVAS
+
WHAT THE WHITEBOARDING SESSION OFFERS Become a pivotal change-maker in energy. Understand the changing energy context in which you operate and the implications of energy pressures and trends for your business. Explore the impact and opportunity of the latest energy policies on your energy strategy. Map the energy risks and opportunities facing your organisation.
Identify commercially-relevant responses to the changing context and establish programmes for active energy management. Design a roadmap to make your energy efficiency programme a success. Create a game plan to engage employees and identify how to influence key stakeholder groups inside and outside the organisation. Feel inspired to act, to make change happen.
BEYOND BULBS As this country emerges from recession, the volatility of energy commodity prices have often had a negative impact on corporate profits and many CFOs expect the volatility to continue. Some 71% name energy and resource management as either challenging or very challenging. And when asked to name the biggest risks to financial performance over the next few years, energy ranks highest. But how best should organisations respond? One-off projects such as energy efficient building retro-fitting or supply chain “greening“ may prove successful and meet and even exceed an internal return on investment. But at a higher level, sustainability must drive a firm’s strategy, instead of sustainability initiatives taking only a few token bullet points on a company’s overall strategic plan. Those real energy change programmes – the type of programmes that go beyond changing light bulbs – are still few and far between because the commercial models and business cases are not well understood. If that’s to change, the companies need the insight, tools and viable commercial models to be able to lead change and respond to this challenge. That’s why we’ve created the 2020 Energy Canvas, to help companies envisage and define a “total” solution to their energy needs.

A
UNIQUE WORKSHOP APPROACH
EDF Energy kicks off its Energy Services conversations in a unique way. The team provides an opportunity to share thought leadership and co-create the basis for a business energy services solution. How? By hosting and leading a whiteboarding session with prospective customers to share requirements, galvanise stakeholder support and generate the building blocks from which a ’total solution’ can be created. This approach is more reminiscent of the behaviour of C21st tech brands, like Google on its Googleplex Campus, which seek to co-create and partner, than the behaviour of C20th brands in the energy market which have always sought to commoditise, package and sell.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE FOR EDF ENERGY
FOR THE CUSTOMER
- Captures requirements
- Envision scale and ambition
- Creates excitement
- Feel a sense it is feasible and can be achieved
- Enhances the relationship - Empowered to take it back to the organisation
EXCITE, COLLABORATE, ENGAGE How do we excite our prospects about their energy strategy, the potential of energy efficiency and also capture all the detail in one easy format that is useful for both the prospect and EDF Energy?
KEY OBJECTIVES:
How do we get diverse stakeholders to collaborate in the session and, ultimately, galvanise them around a common vision for the next five years?
How can we enable the participants to walk away knowing how to best engage their organisation in the project?
THE POWER OF A CANVAS I can explain it on one page, so it doesn’t look complex It’s very human, so it has an emotional value and taps the whole brain Icons make it memorable and usable It’s not “set in stone”, so everyone can input and iterate it as they go It’s participative, not didactic It transforms a sales pitch into a collaborative campus environment It shows the interdependence of the component partsIt shows the answer is a holistic solution.

HOW TO FOCUS AND KICK-START THE DISCUSSION KEY OPENING QUESTION: Where is your biggest energy challenge?
KEY OPENING ACTIVITY: After introducing the canvas, the leader asks each participant in the room to write down where they think their biggest energy challenge is on a post-it, using the canvas to guide them. Ask each person to read them out. The facilitator sticks the challenges to the correct area of the canvas.
HOW TO RANK THE CHALLENGES
HIGH
KEY NEXT QUESTIONS: How would you rank the challenges from highest priority to lowest priority?
MED RANKING ACTIVITY: Once all the post-its have been placed on the canvas, the leader asks the participants to rank the challenges in priority order. The participants work together to agree a ranking from highest to lowest. The facilitator writes the priority order on the post-its on the canvas.
