Who we are and what we do We are established awardwinning architects working throughout Scotland We specialise in creating exceptional buildings, from modern and traditional residences to large-scale conservation projects.

We work with both private clients and businesses on bespoke homes, residential developments, Passivhaus design, conservation projects, ecclesiastical buildings and in the tourism and hospitality sector.

We have positioned our practice so that we can undertake projects for clients with high expectations and who require exceptional levels of care and attention.

Typically, projects might be a client’s lifelong dream, using their life savings, or a grand extension to a Grade A listed building demanding complex technical solutions for the building fabric, and great design sensitivity to get through the planning system.

Featured Project

A Grand New Country Home From the first client conversation onwards, we worked on developing an ambitious vision for this bold and substantial new country house After delving into our client’s aesthetic preferences and detailed research into the local architecture, we came up with this significant Scots Baronial style home featuring a conical turret. Our aim was to create an impressive visual asset in the landscape that would stand the test of time.

It necessitated coordinating special studies, gathering information and producing imagery to work with the local planning policy.

This country home has proved to be a complete success and it was an honour to be entrusted with the design of this house.

Featured Project

Award-Winning Contemporary New Build This deceptively large contemporary house in a sensitive rural location posed a challenge, which we approached with excitement The site forms a sharply curved and raised shape with stunning views to the north. Our design follows these natural contours, using the levels to our advantage. The steel-framed house actually has seven different levels which makes for interesting spaces, with the garage tucked neatly below, reducing the footprint.

We created a simple continuous ridge, broken by four dramatic chimneys. Inside, a grand-scale central double-volume gallery hall links the two sides of the house, and spaces are contemporary and flowing. The two rear wings and a south-facing courtyard offer private entertaining, in contrast to the stunning north-facing wild moor views.

The house won a Herald Property Award.

Large Contemporary Home This crisp new-build four-bedroom home, in a sensitive semi-rural location is an example of how contemporary design is successful when maximising the client’s priorities. These were the view, a connection to the outside, bringing in sunlight and creating a large family gathering space, as well as exceptional energy efficiency.

Gleneagles New Build Residence The Pines is a private family home on an immaculate crescent of individually designed houses, adjacent to Gleneagles Hotel in Auchterarder. Working in the Arts and Crafts style, we paid careful attention to the smallest design details, to fit seamlessly into the architectural surroundings.

Listed Lochside House Extension We replaced an unsuccessful extension with one that added significant space to this listed 19th-century house, but which doesn’t spoil the attractive appearance of the house, using carefully matched details. The owners now enjoy a new kitchen and veranda with a loch view.

We have been lucky enough to be involved with some of these projects, including as Executive Architects at Avenel and as lead architect at Gleneagles, where a collection of Arts and Crafts style luxury homes have been built.

Arts and Crafts Development This is a unique project The luxury Scottish Arts and Crafts style houses are a legacy from the original Avenel house in this Kilmacolm location, built in 1928.

The style was adopted by Hugh Petter for the design of these five elegant houses on large plots within the 10-acre estate. Our role was as Executive Architects, overseeing the implementation of the project.

Our client set impressively high requirements on all aspects of the project. From design, construction methods, materials, technology and finish, everything had to be of an exceptional standard. It was immensely satisfying for the whole team to see these beautiful houses emerge into reality.

Traditional Scottish Island Estate Building fine architecture in remote locations has challenges On Jura this was certainly true. However, Tom Robinson relished such an endeavour in this fantastic place, accepting each challenge with excitement and a practical response.

Ship cargo upon ship cargo of sand for the golf course and for building; ferried lorry load upon lorry load of stone, timber, marble, and tiles, plus plumbing and electrical equipment – and no local hardware shop for an alternative washer… These are the challenges of a grand-scale island build such as this, and require a hardy and patient response – and excellent planning and team-management skills.

Our role on this project was as Executive Architects. We dealt with the planning and building warrant applications, construction drawings and detailing, procurement advice, and construction site inspections to achieve the completion of Stanhope Gate Architecture’s splendid design.

Estate Lunch Hut This estate building may look like a sensitive refurbishment, but is in fact a newbuild, replacing a disused timber building. It’s been designed to fit seamlessly into the landscape and architecture of the estate and is now the perfect traditional lunch hut for our client and their guests, while out on the hill.

Featured Project

Gartocharn Farm Development Our client had a strong sustainability agenda, with high ambitions for what could be achieved Examination of a decaying farmhouse on this farm site led to the decision to replace the existing dwelling with a highly energy efficient design for a house to better provide for the needs of the client and their growing family.

We also converted two farm buildings – an old dairy, and a brick rendered byre – into sustainable and appealing holiday lets. These retain their original character but are fully equipped for 21st-century luxury accommodation.

The result is an attractive sustainable farm development. All three buildings have proved to be pleasing, light-filled spaces to occupy.

Replacement Farmhouse At the outset, our client was keen to adapt their existing long farmhouse.

But after a lot of consideration, we all agreed the best approach both aesthetically and financially was to start again. The resulting new build is a great success, retaining the appearance of buildings in the area, yet it’s far more energy efficient and now equipped for comfortable living for many years ahead.

Featured Project

Farm for The Future Our forward-thinking farmowning client is seeking our design skills for a multifaceted eco-friendly agricultural endeavour here in Scotland She is adopting innovative ideas demonstrated elsewhere in Europe and America. The scheme replaces big-shed reliant intensive beef production with a mixed approach, incorporating an array of livestock in smaller fields, with new hedges and native forestry planted areas.

The project also has at its core an exciting new permaculture walled garden with a large-scale passive solar greenhouse for food production.

There will be a restaurant, farm shop, commercial artisan workspaces, and guest and staff accommodation. The buildings for this enterprise will be robust and adaptable, but reflective of the unique location. Importantly, they must be attractive and stimulating, to maximise appeal to visitors, who will be essential for its commercial success.

It’s a great project to be involved with, with possibilities for new sustainable technologies and exciting rural design.

The fine balance between what works inside and what works outside is always considered and brought to a harmonious result Our Interior Architecture Director is Fiona Robinson, who has the multiple qualification of architect, interior architect specialist and interior designer.

Fiona ensures that our interior spaces actually work well, because a thorough examination of important factors has been considered before pen hits paper.

We calculate and examine how interior spaces will flow, what the room heights will be, the optimum window positions to create the best-framed views, sight-lines within the interior, different textures, ceiling treatment, lighting, and much more. These factors are part of the natural workflow process of an interior architect.

We test our interior designs using the latest computer aided design (CAD) and modelling.

This enables our interiors to quickly come to life and means they can be tweaked to suit our clients’ tastes.

Luxury Interior for Shooting Lodge Our client, who lives abroad, needed us to architecturally transform the interior of this impressive new-build shooting lodge in the Scottish Highlands near Inverness Our task was to produce a fitting interior suitable for large-scale hunting parties for his family and friends, and to seamlessly manage the project in the owner’s absence.

This is a very successful interior, with a grand opulence yet a 21st-century practicality.

Our stately double-height entrance hall, with a symmetrical sensibility in the imperial double staircase, offers a wonderful first impression.

Large reception rooms and marbled bathrooms offer luxury for visitors. The interior design flows effortlessly and accentuates the comfortable upmarket country home feel of this property, heightened by the detail of fine furnishings and finishes.

Featured Project

Luxury Scots Baronial Sporting Lodge Combining renovation of existing buildings with newbuild luxury accommodation on this sporting estate, our designs include the building of an exemplary example of traditional Scottish vernacular architecture in the Scots Baronial style This new building will sit sympathetically within the steading and the rolling lowland landscape.

It will have the dual remit of having to function efficiently as a commercial building and yet convey the romantic image of the Scottish sporting lodge.

Our process led us through detailed iterations exploring the location of the sporting lodge relative to the steading and careful thought about how to successfully reuse the existing buildings.
