DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIA Thank you Falls Creek from Zac and Paul

A

s another incredible winter season draws to a close, it is time to reflect on what has been achieved at Falls Creek and, most importantly, to thank the people, businesses and organisations that make it all possible. Every winter, Disabled Wintersport Australia (DWA) welcomes people of all ages and abilities to experience the freedom, confidence and joy that comes from being on the snow. For many participants, a week at Falls Creek is about much more than learning to ski or snowboard. It is about independence, friendship, achievement and belonging. It is about proving that disability

=

does not define what is possible. The impact of Falls Creek on people with disabilities cannot be overstated. Throughout the season we see participants gain confidence, develop new skills and achieve goals they never thought possible. We watch nervous first-timers become confident skiers, returning participants push their limits, and families discover opportunities that simply would not exist without adaptive snowsports. These experiences create lifelong memories and often have a positive impact well beyond the snow season. None of this would happen without the dedication of our volunteer guides. Their patience, enthusiasm and commitment

support of Disabled Wintersport Australia. Their partnership, professionalism and commitment to accessibility help ensure that people with disabilities can experience all that Falls Creek has to offer. We also look forward to next year when we will kick off our first ‘in resort’ sponsorship with Halleys Lodge coming on board to provide much needed support. This new relationship will see Halleys provide a financial sponsorship along with an amazing support for guides to stay at Falls Creek. This will allow more participants to find freedom on snow. This season's fundraising efforts were also extraordinary, helping DWA raise more than $35,000 to support programs, replace out of date and buy new adaptive equipment and to upgrade our facilities here at Falls Creek. We would like to acknowledge our generous supporters.

HISTORY OF SNOW GLOBES Popular Keep Sakes

S

now globes have captivated people for generations, transforming simple glass spheres into magical windows of wonder. Whether displayed on a shelf or gifted during the holidays, these charming decorations carry a rich history that spans centuries and continents. The origins of the snow globe trace back to Paris in the 1870s. A French businessman named Erwin Perzy Sr. is often credited with inventing the modern snow globe after witnessing a theatrical lighting effect. He experimented with water, soap, and various materials inside glass vessels, eventually discovering that mixing water with white powder created the perfect illusion of falling snow. His invention quickly became a novelty item that delighted crowds across Europe. Perzy patented his creation in Austria, and it wasn't long before the concept spread across the Atlantic to America. By the early 1900s, snow globes had become beloved souvenirs at world expositions and tourist destinations. The famous 1939 New York World's Fair featured snow globes among its most popular merchandise, cementing their place in popular culture.

The golden age of snow globes arrived in the mid-20th century. Manufacturers began crafting increasingly elaborate designs, moving beyond simple landscapes to include intricate figurines, recognizable landmarks, and thematic scenes. Snow globes became synonymous with travel memories and winter traditions, with families collecting them from vacations and special occasions. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, snow globes evolved in both artistry and technique. Crafters experimented with different "snow" formulas, including glitter, beads, and specialised compounds that created various visual effects. The bases became more decorative, featuring ceramic,

resin, and wood elements that transformed each globe into a miniature work of art. Today, snow globes remain cherished collectibles and decorative pieces. From vintage antique globes that command high prices among collectors to contemporary artisanal designs, these objects continue to spark joy and nostalgia. Modern makers blend traditional craftsmanship with innovative designs, ensuring that the magic of the snow globe endures for new generations to discover and treasure. • Thanks to Nyree for another interesting snippet accompanying our industry. COMFORTABLE SKIING What the Foot?

L

ike us grownups, the foot has a job to do. Unlike all of us, it’s a damn important job. It holds us up, walks over rough surfaces, has 26 tiny bones and 13 joints that hold the weight of our body plus the extra forces (three to five times the body weight!) put through it when walking, running, jumping, hopping, skipping, dancing and skiing. And yet it is also sensitive enough to feel a tiny grain of sand between our toes. Astounding. Leonardo Da Vinci said, “the human foot is a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art,” and I absolutely agree. It is amazing, and yet so often we take for granted what it does for us… until it gets sore. Then we freak out about why it’s sore and isn’t working properly. When really, we should just be amazed it can do its usual feats of brilliance without issues!

stretches or maybe orthotics (and usually better footwear).

skiing. So much movement, yet so little space!

The complexity of the foot and its mechanical function means there is a limit to the absolute understanding of it by humans and it is constantly debated amongst academics and clinicians. When it comes to skiing, the foot was absolutely not designed to be in a ski boot (a honking, great plastic box) or be in the same position all day. The foot is designed to move, to conform, to flex and stretch yet a ski boot prevents these natural motions.

Therefore, the first port of call to resolve most ski boot issues is an appropriate ski orthotic. They independently fix half of the problems that pop up and keep the foot stable and secure so the rest of the issues can then be dealt with. Ski orthotics disperse pressure evenly across the bottom of the foot to prevent burning spots, they support and align to prevent muscle fatigue and improve translation of your movements into the boot and ski with less energy loss.

In a ski boot the foot needs some extra help to support the crazy forces that we’re putting through it. The foot needs to be able to allow for pronation (rolling in of the ankle and midfoot) to initiate turns and absorb shock. It also needs to be able to supinate (rolling out) to create a rigid platform with which to hold an edge and go through the middle and end of a turn. And every movement you make, you want it to translate into the ski to control your

So, whatever the issue or injury, a thorough understanding of the anatomy, physiology and biomechanics of the foot is mandatory for those attending to your ski boots. • Krista Sturday, SentinelSportsPodiatry.com.au

The human foot is designed for standing, walking and running. But sometimes the loads we’re wanting to put through it can be more than what it’s ready for. When we start running and get sore feet because we’ve increased the load on the foot faster than it can adapt to the changes, we look at reducing these loads with strengthening, GALLERY AND GIFT SHOP

LOCAL HISTORY Snow Poles

“S

now poles are welcome friends of the walker in summer fog and of the skier in winter ‘white-out.’ If following such a line in adverse conditions, a party should move together. At each pole, if the forward one is not visible, one member should go ahead and remain ahead by a length of line the distance of the poles apart. The other members of the party should remain at a pole and move to the leader only when he has located the pole ahead.” R ‘Dick’ Hemmy from Skiing the High Plains by Harry Stephenson, Graphic Books 1982. The first snow-poles lines across the Bogong High Plains were erected well before the increasing popularity of ski touring, and it was for the safety of gold miners and mountain cattlemen who traversed the Plains. By 1852 gold had been discovered in Bright, Myrtleford and Harrietville, however with the decline of these rich findings the Government set up prospecting boards and to aid further searches commissioned track cutting in the north-east. One of the first lines extended from Mount Fainter (in the

south) to Mount Wills (in the north), and was completed in 1895. George Fitzgerald, from Shannonvale, out from Omeo, and one of the early pioneering cattlemen on the Bogong High Plains, recounted stories of his life to W.F. “Bill” Waters in 1954 when George was 87 years old. He Visit the

spoke of how he and his brother Jack had erected a snow pole line from Rocky Valley to Tawonga Huts back in 1896. “Many miners then working at Glen Wills had their homes in Harrietville, and the Mines Department put in the track to enable them to travel between the two safely. One of these prospectors, a Mr Nelson, lends his name to Mt Nelse. Thick fog and snow were such a hazard on the High Plains that ‘Dad’ Fitzgerald

LOCAL HISTORY recounted a time when mustering on Mt Nelse that the fog “was so thick a dog couldn’t bark in it.’’ So bad indeed that he “dug a hole in the snow behind some rocks and held my horse by the bridle until daylight, and that was the longest night I ever put in!” (from Harry Stephenson’s Cattlemen and Huts of the High Plains, Viking O’Neil, 1980). The original poles were old snow gums “eight to ten feet high and, on the Plains, three chains apart (sixty-six feet, or twenty metres). “Each pole was marked with a metal tag bearing the number of its position in line and a character to indicate which line it belonged to. In the early days the numbers were placed too low and they were frequently covered by snow. Later routes followed the lines pioneered by mountain cattlemen of the Kiewa, Ovens and Mitta Mitta Valleys. With the decline of mining, pole lines fell into disrepair and were not replaced or repaired until the mid1920s when the tourist potential of the area was first recognised, both from summer walkers and winter ski tourers. The latter becoming so popular with its members, that the Ski Club of Victoria lobbied the Public Works Department to renew the main lines. By 1934, with an extensive program of hydrological surveys and a network of snow gauges on the High Plains, the State Electricity Commission erected two new lines of snow poles.

One, two miles in length from the SEC’s cottage near Wallace’s Hut, the other from the summit of Mt Cope down into Pretty Valley. Both routes intersect the main snow pole route across the plains. Steel poles had replaced the snow gum poles on Mt Bogong and the effect of the wind whistling through a series of holes in the steel poles created a low moan. Although the sound was quite eerie, it aided the skier to “listen” for the next pole ahead. In June 1959 came a warning to skiers that, with the construction of Rocky Valley Dam completed and the reservoir beginning to fill, “the pole lines which previously crossed the floor of Rocky Valley basin have been removed.” Alpine Fires in 2003 saw pole lines destroyed and replacement became a priority for Parks Vic, given their

significance for safety of both recreational walkers and ski tourers. There are, however some old poles remaining as testimony to their many years of service, beautifully “ablated by blizzards and garnished with lichen.” If the spirits of the miner Nelson, the mountain cattleman Fitzie, the ski tourer Cleve Cole or the hydrological surveyor Martin Romuld, looked down on the pole lines today they would bear witness to a new generation of walkers, runners, ski tourers, even snowshoers as touring and snow camping has increased in popularity among school and outdoor education groups and young people. •

A Brilliant Event

F

our days. Around 200 competitors each session. A hard-set race slope carved straight down Main Street. When racing wrapped up on 30 August, there was little doubt that Falls Creek had delivered a fitting finale to the Australian junior race season - and an event that showcased the mountain at its very best. From 27–30 August, Falls Creek hosted the nation’s leading U14 and U16 alpine racers, with clubs from across Australia - including Thredbo, Mt Buller, Perisher and Hotham converging for four days of competition. A challenging winter meant the Championships moved to Main Street, but cold, clear nights produced a firm and demanding surface worthy of the country’s best junior racers. That course was no accident. The Falls Creek Grooming Team had worked tirelessly throughout the season to push, preserve and consolidate snow, creating the deep base that ultimately made the event possible. The Race and Events Teams delivered an outstanding program, with racing running smoothly and punctually across all four days. The opening two days featured two singlerun GS races each morning, with around 200 competitors charging down Main Street at speeds you don’t normally see through the heart of the resort. By the end of the Championships, an impressive 92 podium places had been contested. But an event of this scale only happens when a community comes together. Falls Creek Race Club families kept athletes fuelled on the hill and coordinated an extensive prize pool, while the Falls Creek Sailing and Tennis Club fired up the BBQ each day, ensuring competitors had a well-earned sausage before presentations. Falls Creek Masters sideslipped the course from 7:30am until the final run each day - many long after their own children had finished racing with the Club, volunteering simply because they wanted to contribute. Our FIS athletes worked as course marshals throughout the week, despite the

disappointment of having their own race series at Thredbo cancelled. Mountain Operations and the lift team had chairs spinning from 6am, allowing coaches from every club to set safety netting ahead of the 8am starts. Our thanks also go to the local businesses and sponsors whose generosity helped create an exceptional prize pool for 92 podium finishers. Every athlete competed with courage, skill and outstanding sportsmanship. Congratulations to our Overall Australian Champions: Indie Carson (U14 Female, Mt Buller), Loki Davis (U14 Male, Thredbo), Annie Gould (U16 Female, Falls Creek) and Zephyr Lusted (U16 Male, Thredbo). A special congratulations to Falls Creek’s Bowie Whittle, who skied superbly to claim third place in Race 3 Slalom, and to young Austrian Lina Lackner, who joined Falls Creek’s training program this winter and topped the podium herself - a wonderful reflection of the friendships our sport creates across borders. Ultimately, what stood out wasn’t any single result. It was the months of work behind four exceptional days: coaches, volunteers, mountain staff, families, businesses and sponsors all playing their part.

ustralia’s Kindest Person is more than a competition. It’s a national celebration of generosity, compassion, and everyday acts that make our country stronger. Created by HumanKind, this campaign is part of our mission to restore faith in humanity by telling the stories that need to be told. Because when kindness takes centre stage, it inspires us all. Angela Williams is the Founder of Humankind Media. A charity she started with one purpose – to restore faith in the kindness of humanity.

Angela believes that in a world facing division, loneliness, and uncertainty, what humanity needs most is more kindness. When we choose kindness, we don’t just change someone’s day we change the future.

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK - Winter 2026 Edition THIRTEEN

AUSTRALIA’S KINDEST PERSON initiatives, Dave’s work blends humour, heart, and humanity. His projects have been featured across TV, radio, and online media, and his mission remains clear: to use creativity with purpose and prove that kindness is still worth believing in. Our Local Candidate Joshua New is an Australian Army veteran who turned one of the darkest moments of his life into a commitment to making sure others feel seen, heard and less alone. Through his “Hugs, Chats & Handshakes” initiative, the Mount Beauty RSL and his community volunteering, he creates simple spaces where people can connect without judgement. For Joshua, kindness is about showing up because sometimes a smile, a conversation or one person caring can change the course of a life. Josh’s chosen charity is the Mount Beauty Neighbourhood Centre.

“From more than 5000 nominations across Australia, I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that my name is among the finalists. I've never really thought of the things I do as anything extraordinary. For me, kindness has simply been about showing up” said Josh.

https://www.facebook.com/ share/1DDRt17Tpp/?mibextid=wwXIfr https://australiaskindestperson. events/#finalists

“One of the most meaningful parts of becoming a finalist was being able to choose a charity that could receive $25,000 if I'm fortunate enough to be named Australia's Kindest Person.” “There'll be more to share over the coming weeks and opportunities for people to get behind this journey, but for now I mostly just want to say thank you to everyone supporting this initiative.” There will be an opportunity for people to vote and show support so please encourage people to follow my hugs, chats and handshakes facebook page for updates. •

No longer needed – got married recently – wife knows everything! FOOD FOR THOUGHT “There are people sitting there who are deliberately waiting for the thrill of being offended. They want to be offended because it gives them a sense of moral superiority.” John Cleese FOOD FOR THOUGHT I think some people confuse ‘freedom of speech’ with the idea that you must say everything you think. Freedom of Speech is the right to say what you want, but you should also take responsibility for what you say. Just because you have the right, doesn’t mean you can use it carelessly! Ricky Gervais MISSING BOOK This ‘Missing Book’ advert has appeared for quite some time now. Your Journo has purchased a digital copy from Melbourne University. But, the book itself is important – because it was given to a member of the community to be kept in perpetuity for the community. Titled “The Interaction between Land Use, the Environment and the Hydrology of the Bogong High Plains between 1850 and 1985” it is a vital piece of local history. homemade croissants from Hana’s Croissants, gourmet sweets and loaded slices from KJ’s Delicious Sweets, homestyle food from Milch Cafe Bar and coffee and homemade sweets from The Little Vintage Van.

This Saturday The Mount Beauty Market returns this Saturday, 5th September, with over 30 stallholders bringing a wonderful mix of handmade, homegrown and homebaked goods to the community.

After wet weather saw the winter markets move indoors to the Mount Beauty Community Centre, organisers are keeping a close eye on the forecast, and may need to move inside yet again.

Visitors can browse everything from handmade jewellery, artwork, clothing, homewares and photography to locally grown produce, flowers, plants, skincare, timber creations and unique gifts.

The market location will be confirmed closer to Saturday, with visitors encouraged to check the Mount Beauty Market Facebook and Instagram pages or website for the latest update.

There are also plenty of new faces joining the market alongside much-loved regular stallholders.

The market runs from 9am to 1pm, with everyone welcome to come along, support local makers and businesses, and enjoy a relaxed Saturday morning in Mount Beauty.

Food will also be a big part of the morning, with Tawonga Baker bringing its popular sourdough, croissants and pastries, alongside
