BRING PARKRUN TO LIFE

Be part of history. Help establish Australia's first-ever Alpine parkrun.

Falls Creek locals Nik Nok and Zac from FOMO Trails are on a mission to establish Australia's first Alpine parkrun—and we're inviting you to help make it happen.

This isn't just another parkrun.

It will be the first Alpine parkrun anywhere in Australia, joining thousands of parkrun events around the world while offering an experience unlike any other in the country. Set amongst the snow gums and alpine landscape of Falls Creek, it will become a destination for parkrunners from across Australia and beyond.

For many, parkrun is already a Saturday morning tradition. For others, it's a reason to travel. We believe Falls Creek has the opportunity to become a genuine bucket-list parkrun - a place where people can tick off a unique event while discovering everything our mountain and region have to offer.

Establishing a new parkrun requires a one-off investment of $8,600, covering the official setup costs including a dedicated parkrun AED, event equipment, signage and the resources required to launch the event. Once established, the event will belong to the community. Week after week it will be delivered by volunteers, remain free for everyone to enjoy, and become a lasting asset for Falls Creek.

Being Australia's first Alpine parkrun also means breaking new ground. Designing a

course that embraces the alpine environment while adapting to seasonal conditions is a challenge we're excited to take on. The result will be a uniquely Australian parkrun experience that showcases the beauty, resilience and adventure of the High Country.

This is an opportunity to create something that has never existed before.

A place where thousands of future footsteps begin.

A place that proudly puts Falls Creek on the map as the home of Australia's first Alpine parkrun.

Whether you can contribute $20 or $2,000, every donation helps bring this vision closer to reality.

Join us in making Australian parkrun history. Donate today and help create a legacy that will inspire generations of walkers, joggers, runners and volunteers to come. •

An Adorable Little Friend

Ilove penguins. While Australia may not have any of these delightful creatures in our alpine regions in mainland Australia, if we include the Australian sub-Antarctic territories and occasional mainland vagrants, eight different types of penguins can be found in Australian territory.

Only one species of penguin (the Little Penguin) permanently breeds on the Australian mainland and its surrounding islands. The Little Penguin (Eudyptula minor), also known as the fairy or little blue penguin, is the world's smallest penguin (standing just 30 - 35cm tall) and is the only species that builds burrows and nests along the Australian coastline. Major colonies are famously located on Phillip Island (Victoria) and Penguin Island (Western Australia).

The remaining seven species do not breed on the Australian mainland, but they either breed in Australian sub-Antarctic territories (like Macquarie Island) or occasionally wash up on southern Australian shores as rare visitors:

• King Penguin

• Royal Penguin (Endemic to the Australian sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island)

• Gentoo Penguin

• Southern Rockhopper Penguin

• Macaroni Penguin

• Erect-crested Penguin

• Emperor Penguin [1]

My love of penguins can be attested to by the number of penguin related products I have in stock: key rings, board games, build-your-own penguin toys, penguin kitchenware, blankets, earrings, tea bags and at least one book. But fuelling my love of adorable penguin products, are a couple of internet videos showing the highly capable actor Benedict Cumberbatch’s struggle with the word ‘penguin.’ It stems from his narration of the 2009 BBC documentary South Pacific, where he unintentionally mispronounced the birds as “penwings” and “penlings” several times. The mispronunciation flew under the radar until years later when Graham Norton played the audio clip on The Graham Norton Show, after which it quickly became a viral sensation.

The hilarious blunder followed Ben to Hollywood. When he voiced a wolf named Classified in the 2014 DreamWorks animated film Penguins of Madagascar, he reportedly struggled to say "penguins" in the recording booth, repeatedly falling back to his famous

"peng-wing" pronunciation. Try watching Penguins of Madagascar now and really listen to how Ben pronounces the word penguin. It’s entertaining.

If you share my love of these adorable little creatures, come in store and see my penguin homewares. Because don’t we all deserve something adorable to make us smile?

You can see what’s happening in store on Instagram and Facebook. Come give @spot.sir. spotsalot the dog a pat & a dog treat.

Cheers, Nyree

DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIA

Train the Trainer Program Builds

Skills, Confidence and Capacity

This week at Falls Creek, Disabled Wintersport Australia (DWA) is investing in the future of adaptive snowsports through its annual Train the Trainer program. The intensive training event brings together experienced and emerging trainers to develop the skills, knowledge and leadership needed to support volunteers, guides and participants throughout the busy winter season.

The program focuses on equipping trainers with the latest techniques in adaptive skiing and snowboarding instruction, volunteer mentoring, communication and participant support. By strengthening the capabilities of DWA’s training team, the organisation can continue to deliver high-quality experiences for people with disability seeking the freedom and independence that comes from enjoying the snow.

The Train the Trainer event also provides an opportunity for experienced volunteers to share their knowledge with the next generation of trainers. Through practical on-snow sessions, group discussions and mentoring opportunities, participants are preparing to support the hundreds of volunteers and guests expected at Falls Creek throughout the season. A key focus of this year’s program is increasing the number of women trainers across DWA. Building a stronger network of female trainers will help support the continued growth of DWA’s Women’s Program, creating more opportunities for women and girls with disability to get involved in adaptive snowsports while learning and participating in an encouraging and inclusive environment. While training is underway, the DWA community is also gearing up for the first major fundraiser of the 2026 season. This Saturday night, from 6pm head to Powderkeg in Falls Creek for DWA’s first fundraising event of the winter. The evening promises to be a fantastic opportunity for locals, visitors,

volunteers and supporters to come together, celebrate the season and help raise funds that directly support adaptive snowsports programs. Every dollar raised helps DWA provide adaptive equipment, volunteer training, participant support and on-snow opportunities for people with disability. Whether you are a long-time supporter or new to the DWA community, we encourage everyone to join us at Powderkeg on Saturday night and help make our first fundraiser of the season a great success. Together, we are building a stronger, more inclusive future on snow.

Make sure you come and say hello to Zac and Paul Lamb at the DWA office in Slalom Plaza. For more information, visit Disabled Wintersport Australia, contact Zac at fallscreek_camps@disabledwintersport. com.au or Paul Lamb at paul.lamb@ disabledwintersport.com.au. •

Lauren Parker reflects on her Winter Paralympic journey

Fresh from an incredible year that included competing at the Winter Paralympic Games, Australian Para athlete Lauren Parker has reflected on the challenge of stepping into an entirely new sport and the lessons she has taken from her Winter Paralympic experience.

Despite being one of Australia's most successful para-triathletes and para-cyclists, Parker entered the Winter Paralympics as a relative newcomer to Para cross-country skiing and biathlon.

"Looking back at the Winter Paralympics, I'm most proud of just giving it a go," Parker said. "It was a big challenge for me being so new to the sport of cross-country skiing and biathlon. It was my 11th week on snow when I was at the Games.

"I also had to take all expectations down. Going from being at the top in the two sports of para-triathlon and para-cycling to then being midfield on the snow, I knew I just had to do the best I could. Snow sports are very different.

"I'm also proud of how well I adapted. I'm a quick learner, but I really worked hard at it and I conquered a lot of fears. I'm proud of not giving up. I was happy with four top 10 performances at the Games."

Parker says her passion for endurance sport is what drives her to continue taking on new challenges across multiple disciplines.

"I just love training and competing and pushing my body to the limits in endurance sports," she said.

"I also love a challenge and I want to show other athletes out there that anything is possible and to chase after what's in your heart. You don't just have to stick to one sport. There is a lot of crossover and if you're a hard worker day in and day out, you can do anything.

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS

"I also love meeting all the different people and athletes in each sport and you get to go to all different places around the world, which is beautiful."

Balancing training across several elite sports requires careful planning, but Parker says her triathlon background provides the fitness needed to transition successfully between disciplines. "It's all about time management and working a plan out to cover each sport," she said.

"I have found that mostly sticking to a triathlon program makes me so fit that crossing over to other sports is quite easy in terms of the fitness and strength side of things. It's the skills within each sport that I have to work on when I'm in the actual environment.

"When I am on the snow, I work on the skills rather than doing lots of kilometres because my triathlon program provides that cardiovascular endurance. I didn't stop training for triathlon and cycling when I was at the snow and at the Winter Paralympics because it was so necessary to keep that fitness, which helped me on the snow.

"The hardest part is travelling with all of my bikes and equipment that I need. Doing all of these sports means I have to travel with a bike, a racing chair, wheels, spare wheels, bike training rollers, a sitski, skis, poles etc. Haha, lots of stuff, which sometimes makes it a nightmare, but it's all part of it."

We wish Lauren the best of luck on her journey to defending her summer Paralympic medals in LA 2028. •

Community Recovery Program

This week was the final week of operations for the Community Recovery Program at Falls Creek. Established in response to the landslide that occurred in October 2022 above Bogong Village, the program has helped support the Falls Creek community not only through the aftermath of the disaster, but also to establish long term resilience and capacity.

After the disaster of COVID-19 in 2020 and what turned out to be a crap season anyway, we then endured the ‘on again - off again’ season 2021. Winter of 2022 was pretty good – a couple of friends from Melbourne came snowboarding for 17 weekends in the season. Then in October (I think the 21st) the Bogong High Plains Road above Bogong Village had this massive landslip – blocking the road for a major part of that summer. During winter of 2023, we were able to get one lane open as the

Whelan crew did their best. Finally in April 2024, the road was officially opened. This, event and other little problems had a significant impact on our resort and the people associated. This lead to a program being instigated to

support the area and those impacted. The program has now delivered and supported a range of initiatives and events including mental and physical health checks and education, leadership courses, a dedicated space for businesses at The Recovery Hub, and Falls Creek’s own festival, Feastival (a highly successful event).

A great big sincere thank you to those involved with creating, supporting and delivering on the initiatives and programs throughout the last three and a half years including ARV, the Community Recovery Team, the wider Falls Creek Alpine Resort team and those involved in the Community Recovery Committee. Your efforts have been valuable and greatly appreciated. • Ed

Husband Tech Support

---------- Forwarded message ----------

*Dear Tech Support,*

Last year I upgraded from *Boyfriend* to *Husband* and noticed a distinct slowdown in overall system performance, particularly in the *flower and jewellery applications*, which operated flawlessly under *Boyfriend*. In addition, *Husband* uninstalled many other valuable programmes, such as *Romance & Personal Attention* and then installed undesirable programs such as *Cricket, Football, Golfing and Continuous TV*. *Conversation* no longer runs, and *Housecleaning* simply crashes the system. I've tried running *Nagging* to fix these problems, but to no avail.

What can I do?

*Signed, Desperate*

* Dear Desperate,*

First keep in mind, *Boyfriend* is an *Entertainment Package*, while *Husband* is an *Operating System*. Please enter the command: *'http: I Thought You Loved Me.html'* and try to download *Tears*. Don't forget to install the *Guilt* update. If

that application works as designed, *Husband* should then automatically run the applications *Jewellery and Flowers*, but remember? over-use of the above application can cause *Husband* to default to *Grumpy Silence, Garden Shed or Beer*. *Beer* is a very bad program that will download the *Snoring Loudly Beta. * Whatever you do, DO NOT install *Mother-in-law* (it runs a virus in the background that will eventually seize control of all your system resources). Also, do not attempt to re-install the Boyfriend program. These are unsupported applications and will crash *Husband*.

In summary, *Husband* is a great system, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly. It also tends to work better running one task at a time. You might consider buying additional software to improve memory and performance. We recommend *Food and Hot Lingerie*.

Clear Communications

Even though the first lodge was built in 1947, there were no telephones in Falls Creek until 1960. The only access to a phone was at Rocky Valley Camp where the SEC had an extensive network to Mount Beauty, Bogong and the other camps such as Clover power station, the West Kiewa, Howman’s Gap, McKay Creek and Lower Bogong (now known as Clover Arboretum).

There were test points with a phone beside the road where contact could be made to the office in Mount Beauty and in extremes, could be contacted elsewhere.

Part of Julian Newton-Brown’s job in the test laboratory at Rocky Valley was to read the weather instruments, put the details into groups, then call head office in Melbourne and give them the details. The tower on Mount McKay had a radiotelephone link to head office. The SEC was unconcerned about Falls Creek, so no power was connected until 1960 when Tom Mitchell, then politician, aired the matter in parliament. Tom was a keen skier. He applied to the Post Master General who was then responsible for telephones as well as mail until the telephone part of the PMG was sold off as Telecom, then to become Telstra.

The PMG staff came up from Bright and installed an exchange in Diana Lodge. There were only about 15 lines to a post across the

ENQUIRIES

Several of the old hand-wound telephones kindly donated by Julian Newton-Brown. Pic – Courtesy Falls Creek Museum

Then came the telephone itself. Direct dial phones were common in the cities but not in remote areas so Falls Creek got the oldfashioned sets with a hand wound magneto to ring the bell at the exchange. When the operator answered, she could then plug a line into another phone line or the exchange in Bright. In the phone were two dry cell batteries that carried the spoken word to the other phone connected.

Trunk lines were expensive then, so each trunk was timed by the minute. The operator would disconnect you after a minute if you did not reply to here question “are you extending?”

At Falls Creek, most of the bulk supplies came from Albury so that was classified as an interstate trunk call. Bill Griffiths would do a freight run on Thursdays to McKulloughs, Bishops Cool Stores and Arnold Brothers Fruit and Veges - so orders had to be placed on Wednesdays.

Falls Creek had ‘Post Office Annie’ on their exchange. Annie would get each of the wholesalers on the line then connect each of the Falls Creek lodges in turn to give the orders. The cost of the call was then split up between the businesses.

This article was written by Julian NewtonBrown for the Falls Creek Museum. Julian’s Lodge ‘Arundel’ was known as Falls Creek 11, ‘Nelse’ was Falls Creek 6 and ‘Pretty Valley’ was known as Falls Creek 10. Two of these phones can now be found in the Falls Creek Museum

Respect Gets Respect

Regardless of how you enjoy your snow sport, always show courtesy to others and be aware that there are inherent risks in all snow recreational activities that common sense, protective equipment and personal awareness can reduce. These risks include rapid changes in the weather, visibility and surface conditions, as well as natural and artificial hazards such as rocks, trees, stumps, vehicles, lift towers, snow fences and snowmaking equipment.

Observe the Code and Share with others the Responsibility for a great experience

1. Know your ability and always stay in control and be able to stop and avoid other people or objects. It is your responsibility to stay in control on the ground and in the air.

2. Take lessons from professional instructors to learn and progress.

3. Use appropriate protective equipment to minimise the risk of injury.

4. Before using any lift you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely.

5. Observe and obey all signs and warnings. Keep off closed trails or runs.

6. Give way to people below and beside you on the hill. It is your responsibility to avoid them.

7. Do not stop where you are not clearly visible from above. Look uphill and give way to others when entering/exiting a trail or starting downhill.

8. Always ensure your equipment is in good condition and use suitable restraining devices to avoid runaway skiing/boarding equipment, even when riding chairlifts.

9. Do not ski, board, ride a lift or undertake any other alpine activity if your ability is impaired by drugs or alcohol.

10. If you are involved in, or witness an accident or collision, alert Ski Patrol, remain at the scene and identify yourself to the Ski Patrol.

Know the code. It’s your responsibility. Failure to observe the code may result in cancellation of your ticket or pass by ski patrol or other authorised personnel.

Respect gets respect - from the lift line, to the slopes, through the park and the resort. •
