A PRAYER For Our Friends We come in lament Gracious Lord for the evil that attacked our custodians of peace on Tuesday. We acknowledge the pain that all the men and women of the Victorian Police Force are experiencing following this brutal event and come to you O God seeking your comfort, support and inner strength during this bitter time. We ask for your presence to be with the families and friends of those who were killed and the injured officer, comfort, uphold and protect them in their grief. We pray for their fellow attending officers who can never unsee that tragic moment, that you will protect their minds and their sense of wellbeing. We also uphold all the members of the Victorian Police Force and former members for who this event brings back painful memories and reignites nightmares and suffering. We look for justice, we look for healing and we look to make sense of this madness. God of justice, God of peace, please help us all in our loss and grief, come near to us all and answer these our prayers. Amen. •

At the first anniversary of this frightful event, this paper has decided to re-run the prayer we offered last year and to say thanks to our coppers and to reinforce the good work they do! The Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation perpetuates the memory of Victoria Police employees who have died in the line of duty through the support of worthwhile community projects in Victoria. In total, 175 Victoria Police members have died in the line of duty. Of these, 30 have been murdered, which underlines the dangers police members face on a daily basis. The Foundations is a non-profit, community based association comprising members, volunteers, sponsors and supporters who share common goals: • To honour and remember our fallen police employees • To show police that their dedication and challenging work is valued • To create appropriate memorials to fallen police officers and employees • To encourage strong and supportive relationships between the community and it’s Police Force In reading this, this paper asks that you give some serious thought to just how lucky we are to have such great coppers in our community. In these trying times, we ask that you support and honour the great work they do and remember they have families and friends that also need our support. That is not too much to ask! Ed. •

DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIA Big Weekend Ahead Towards Season Finale
T
here has been plenty happening around Falls Creek this week, with great snow conditions, growing participation and increasing interest in adaptive snowsports from both people with disabilities and the wider snowsports community. The DWA Hub has been buzzing with activity as participants continue developing their skills and confidence on snow. Nick has been enjoying his time in a sit ski and taking on more terrain around the mountain, while Jade continues to make impressive progress on the mono ski, gaining confidence with every outing. It has also been fantastic to welcome Katie back to Falls Creek after a few years away. Seeing familiar faces return to the program is always a reminder of the strong community that exists within DWA. Adaptive snowsports have also been attracting attention from the professional ski teaching community. Seeing the APSI group including the mono sit ski this week as part of their preparation for Interski, further demonstrating the growing recognition of adaptive instruction within the broader snowsports industry. Their enthusiasm and willingness to learn adaptive techniques is encouraging and highlights the bright future of inclusive snowsports in Australia. One thing that has stood out this winter is the increasing interest from people with disabilities wanting to experience the freedom of the mountains. Every week we are seeing enquiries for new participants to discover adaptive skiing and snowboarding, often achieving things they never thought possible. Behind the scenes, volunteers and staff have

been busy preparing for one of the biggest weekends of the winter. The annual DWA Auction and Raffle is now live, featuring over $20,000 worth of incredible prizes generously donated by local businesses, resort partners and supporters. Funds raised will help upgrade adaptive equipment and improve facilities, ensuring DWA can continue helping people with disabilities find their freedom on snow. Go to https://app.galabid. com/dwafallscreek There are some amazing experiences, accommodation packages, equipment and resort prizes up for grabs, so now is the perfect time to get involved. Whether you're bidding online, purchasing raffle tickets or joining us at Powderkeg on Saturday afternoon, every contribution helps DWA continue providing adaptive snowsports opportunities for people with disabilities. Every bid makes a difference.
Auction Weekend at Falls The DWA Auction and Raffle will be held at Powderkeg from 4.30pm to 7.00pm on Saturday 29 August. As we head into the final weeks of the season, the DWA team would like to thank everyone who continues to support adaptive snowsports at Falls Creek. Whether you've volunteered, participated, donated or attended a fundraiser, you are helping more people experience the freedom and joy of the mountains. If you'd like to learn more about volunteering with DWA, visit Paul and Zac at the DWA Hub underneath Sno Nuts in Slalom Plaza, email fallscreek@disabledwintersport.com.au or call 1300 265 730. CROSS COUNTRY NEWS What Skiing Teaches Us About Endurance
A
s we come to the end of another winter at Falls Creek, it is a good time to look back at what makes cross-country skiing such a demanding sport, and what we can do during the off-season to come back stronger next winter. Whether you spent the season racing, skiing with friends, tackling the trails on a weekend, or simply enjoying the snow whenever you could, one thing that underpins almost everything we do on skis is endurance. Cross-country skiing is often described as one of the toughest sports around, and for good reason. We climb hills, glide across flats, change technique and pace, and keep moving through all sorts of conditions. Being able to do all of that without running out of energy comes down to endurance. What exactly is endurance? Put simply, endurance is our ability to keep exercising for an extended period of time without tiring too quickly.
For a cross-country skier, that might mean skiing a long distance without fading, having enough energy to climb the final hill, or being able to recover quickly after a hard effort and keep going. But endurance isn't just about having a big engine. It is a combination of several things working together: • Heart and lungs: delivering oxygen efficiently to the muscles. • Muscular endurance: allowing your muscles to keep working repeatedly without tiring. • Energy systems: using the aerobic system for sustained efforts and the anaerobic system when the intensity suddenly increases. • Strength: helping you maintain good technique, double pole efficiently and power your way up climbs such as The Paralyser. • Mental resilience: continuing to work when the legs are getting heavy and the finish still feels a long way away. How does your body fuel skiing? Most of the time we spend cross-country skiing is powered by our aerobic energy system. This system uses

oxygen to help produce energy and allows us to keep moving for long periods. Think about cruising along the trails at Falls Creek at a comfortable pace. Your body is working continuously, but it can keep supplying the muscles with the energy they need. Then the intensity changes. You might accelerate to catch a group, push hard up the Paralyser, push over the top of a climb or sprint for the finish. Suddenly, your body needs energy faster than the aerobic system can provide it on its own. That's when the anaerobic energy system becomes increasingly important. The catch is that these high-intensity efforts can't be sustained forever. They are demanding, and if you spend too long skiing above your sustainable pace, those legs can start to feel very heavy. Good skiers learn to manage both. They build the endurance to ski efficiently for a long time, while also developing the strength and speed to deal with those short, hard efforts when they matter. What happens now that the snow is gone? For many Australian skiers, the end of winter means a long break between snow seasons. But that doesn't mean your training has to stop. In fact, the off-season is one of the best opportunities to build the fitness that will help you next winter. Running, cycling, hiking and roller skiing are all excellent ways to develop your aerobic fitness. Longer, steady sessions help build the foundation that allows you to spend more time on snow without tiring as quickly.

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS Strength training also has an important role. A stronger body can maintain better technique for longer and handle the demands of climbing, double poling and changing pace. As winter gets closer, faster sessions can then be added to prepare the body for those harder efforts that are part of skiing and racing. The key word is consistency. You don't need to smash yourself every session. Building fitness gradually, week after week, is far more useful than doing one huge workout and then needing a week to recover. Endurance isn't just about going further! One of the biggest misconceptions about endurance is that it simply means being able to go for longer. For cross-country skiing, it's also about how well you manage your energy. Pacing yourself, maintaining technique when you're tired, knowing when to push and when to settle, and staying mentally focused are all part of endurance. That's something we see throughout the season, from a Hoppet skier getting around the tough 2026 Hoppet loops at Falls Creek to athletes racing at the front of a field. The distances and speeds might be very different, but the fundamentals are the same. So as we close out the 2026 season, enjoy the last of the snow, take a moment to appreciate the kilometres you've covered and the hills you've conquered, and then give your body some time to recover. When you're ready, start building again. The snow will be back before we know it (hopefully), and the work you put in during the GALLERY AND GIFT SHOP

months away from the trails will help you make the most of it when it does. Thanks for another great season at Falls Creek. See you on the snow in 2027! Looking Ahead to the Northern Hemisphere Winter While the Australian snow season is ending, the northern winter is just around the corner. If you're interested in keeping the racing going, there are plenty of citizen and recreational ski races happening across Europe, North America and Asia throughout the winter. The Worldloppet and Ski Classics calendars are great places to start if you're looking for a race to add to your overseas adventure. This European season will also see the Australian National Team take on the 2027 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun, Sweden. For more information on the championships and the

nyone who has spent any time in the snow has heard of Ullr, the Norse god of archery, snow, and hunting. He was said to have superior skiing and skating abilities, and to have made his home in the Yew Dales, a wood of Yew trees, the best wood for making bows. But have you ever heard of the Norse goddess Skade? In Norse mythology, Skaði (sometimes anglicised as Skadi, Skade, or Skathi) is a jötunn and goddess associated with bowhunting,

OUR SES Vital
A
t 1:22am, pagers and emergency service apps began sounding in homes across Falls Creek. The message was brief: “Assist AV with patient.” (“AV” refers to Ambulance Victoria.) After a flurry of phone calls and messages, our Unit Duty Officer determined that we were required to assist in recovering a seriously ill patient from the Alpine National Park. A team was assembled at the Falls Creek SES headquarters, with everyone instructed to rendezvous at 1:40am. Following a detailed briefing, the team set off into the night. SES was to lead the operation and assist Ambulance Victoria in whatever

capacity was required. Fortunately, it was a fine, clear night, although there was no moonlight - much better than the preceding three nights, which had been blizzard and white-out conditions. At the beginning of the storm, the Falls Creek SES team had spent three hours clearing a large tree that was blocking the Bogong High Plains Road. Although the work was carried out in daylight, it was still a hard slog in pouring rain. The call-out went smoothly, with minimal fuss. We knew where the patient was camping and went directly to the site. We assisted the ambos with the patient, then brought him, his adult supervisors and their equipment safely back to Falls Creek. Two and a half hours later, our team members were back in bed, snatching a few hours’ sleep before getting up to do their regular jobs. A few days later, we had another assignment this time in much more pleasant circumstances. We were placed on standby in case of an emergency during the annual Hoppet event. This involved sitting in the sun and watching the race entrants cross the finish line. Tough work, but someone had to do it! Just another week in the life of SES at Falls Creek.

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK - Winter 2026 Edition TWELVE
QUEER SKI WEEK WELCOMES ALL alive - just in a different way. This isn’t about replacing what came before. It’s about creating something a little more relaxed, a little more grassroots, and a lot more focused on what brought many of us there in the first place: skiing, snowboarding, good people, and genuine connections.”
To Falls Creek for Snow, Community and Pride
F
alls Creek is set to shine with pride as Queer Ski Week invites the LGBTIQA+ community, allies, family and friends to come together on the mountain, hit the slopes and paint the town rainbow. When it was announced earlier in the year that Gay Ski Week Australia would not be going ahead, a group of attendees and behind-the-scenes crew decided to try and salvage the season. They got together, and inspired by social ski gatherings overseas, they decided to do their bit and bring pride to the slopes. This Queer Ski Week was born. A week at Falls Creek with a simple mission: bring amazing people together on the mountain, have a great time, and celebrate the community we love.
Check out https://qnews.com.au/ for more detail on the week’s activities. • Dean Arcuri – 19th August 2026 A Pic from a previous Queer Ski Week – lots of fun to be had.
Falls Creek rounds out ski season celebrating inclusion and pride. “This isn’t about replacing what came before” “We’re a group of long-time attendees, performers, and snow lovers who have shared some unforgettable memories through the original Gay Ski Week experience,” the team say on their website.

CLASSIFIEDS VALLEY FUN & FITNESS CLASS Every Tuesday at 9am at the Ladies Facility, Dederang Recreation Reserve. Bring a drink bottle and towel. $10 per session. Classes by Narelle Jones. Enquiries: Sharon McEvoy 0438 289 293 (the6maccas@bigpond.com) TAKE NOTE “People without a sense of humour should not be allowed to decide what people with a sense of humour are allowed to!’ John Cleese FOOD FOR THOUGHT “There are people sitting there who are deliberately waiting for the thrill of being offended. They want to be offended because it gives them a sense of moral superiority.” John Cleese FOOD FOR THOUGHT I think some people confuse ‘freedom of speech’ with the idea that you must say everything you think. Freedom of Speech is the right to say what you want, but you should also take responsibility for what you say. Just because you have the right, doesn’t mean you can use it carelessly! Ricky Gervais MISSING BOOK This ‘Missing Book’ advert has appeared for quite some time now. Your Journo has purchased a digital copy from Melbourne University. But, the book itself is important – because it was given to a member of the community to be kept in perpetuity for the community. Titled “The Interaction between Land Use, the Environment and the Hydrology of the Bogong High Plains between 1850 and 1985” it is a vital piece of local history.
