With every dip, we are helping us move closer to a world where nobody has to hear the words “you have cancer!” My own personal journey started in September 2025 with severe incontinence, a diagnosis in October by our wonderful staff of doctors Libby, Laura and the ever helpful Vanessa at the Mount Beauty Medical Centre. DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIA

Hidden Disabilities, Big Smiles and Great Turn

I

t has been another fantastic week at Disabled Wintersport Australia Falls Creek, with plenty of sunshine, great snow conditions and smiling faces across the resort. This week has been a great reminder that not all disabilities are visible. Many of our participants with cognitive disabilities are standing skiers and snowboarders who are often indistinguishable from every other guest enjoying the mountain. Behind every successful day on snow is a team of highly skilled, committed and patient volunteer guides helping participants build confidence, skills and independence. Shwann, Will and Lachie were out enjoying the slopes this week, making the most of the conditions and exploring the mountain with their guides. You could often spot the crew skiing across Sun Valley and throughout the resort. Their progress has also been supported by the amazing adaptive instructors from the Falls Creek Snowsports School, whose expertise and enthusiasm continue to make a huge difference to

our participants. Of course, it wasn't just our standing skiers making tracks. We were delighted to welcome back Youki and his mates this week, bringing plenty of energy and excitement to the mountain. Jade was once again driving the monoski with determination and purpose, taking on whatever the slopes could throw at her. Rohan joined us seeking the freedom that only riding can provide and enjoyed a terrific week on snow, while sisters Dali and Jaeli returned for more sunny laps and great turns around the resort. None of this would be possible without our incredible volunteers, guides and supporters who make adaptive snowsports available to people of all ages and abilities. As the season heads towards its final weeks, don't forget the DWA Fundraiser Raffle every Saturday afternoon at Powderkeg from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm. If you're hoping to take home the famous Chook raffle, make sure you wear your flanny and join in the fun. A huge thank you to our generous supporters and sponsors including I

Dream of Snow, Vegitation, Farm to Fork,RAD Gloves, Country Grocers, Billy Buttons, Falls Creek Distillery and more, along with the many businesses and individuals who continue to support adaptive snowsports at Falls Creek. Looking ahead, our season finale event will be the DWA Mega Auction on Saturday 29 August, immediately following the final raffle of the season at Powderkeg. There will be opportunities to bid on some incredible items while helping support DWA's programs into the future. It promises to be a fantastic afternoon and a great way to celebrate another successful winter together. If you'd like to learn more about DWA, volunteer as a guide, or see what's happening around the mountain, drop in and see Zac and Paul in the DWA office, or visit us online. We'd love to chat. •

HOPPET WEEKEND DELIVERS Despite the Conditions!

I

t was Kangaroo Hoppet weekend in Falls Creek, and while the snow conditions presented plenty of challenges, the 32nd edition of Australia’s biggest cross-country ski event still delivered a fantastic day of racing. The weather could not have been more beautiful. Warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine greeted competitors, with the track starting out firm and fast before softening quickly once the first racers got underway. Snow conditions meant that all three events, the Kangaroo Hoppet, Birkebeiner and Joey, had to be shortened. But what could have been a major hurdle was turned into an opportunity for the Falls Creek Nordic community to show exactly what it is capable of. The organisers, volunteers and grooming team worked incredibly hard to make the event happen, and their efforts were rewarded with hundreds of skiers getting out on the snow and enjoying race day.

In the Kangaroo Hoppet, Lars Young Vik claimed his first victory in the iconic 42 km event, finishing ahead of Seve De Campo and Bentley Walker-Broose. For Lars, the win was particularly special. “It feels great to win my first Kangaroo Hoppet! It’s the pinnacle event of Australian XC skiing and I’m honoured to join the ranks with some of our best skiers.” The battle between Lars and Seve was close for much of the race, with the two quickly establishing themselves as the contenders for the win. “It was a good race with Seve and we knew quite early that it was between the two of us for the win. I felt pretty confident going out on the last lap but it wasn’t until the top of Tank Hill that I felt confident that I was going to take it!” The women’s Hoppet was won by NSW local Rosie Fordham, who claimed her second Kangaroo Hoppet victory. Maddie Hooker finished second, with Isabella Moon rounding out the podium.

Rosie was thrilled to take another win on home snow. “Feels great to have a second win here. The vibes were awesome and as always so nice to race at home.” Despite the unusual course and conditions, Rosie was impressed by what the organisers were able to achieve. “I was very impressed with the ability to run the event. I think the organisers did very well with what was available.” The modified course also provided a slightly different challenge for the competitors. “I liked the course today. A bit hillier than the usual course and a lot more lap traffic to deal with but overall a great race course.”

HOPPET WEEKEND DELIVERS much more than just the elite racing at the front. Overall, women made up 28 per cent of the combined field across the three events, with men accounting for 72 per cent. A Huge Community Effort

by Elle Sankey and Ella Green. The Joey races once again showcased the next generation of Australian cross-country skiers. Liam Cullen-Croke won the men’s Joey, with Levi Gurarie from the USA finishing second and Morris Plomley in third. Zara Potocki took the women’s victory, ahead of Genevieve Dubrava and Thea Harvey. And the participation numbers show just how important these races are to the broader Falls Creek Nordic community. Across the three events, 653 skiers took to the snow. The Hoppet attracted 267 competitors, the Birkebeiner 186 and the Joey 200. The Joey field was particularly encouraging, with women making up 58 per cent of the field, compared with 42 per cent men. It is a great sign for the future of the sport and a reminder that events like the Kangaroo Hoppet are about GALLERY AND GIFT SHOP

Come find something unique! Open every day in July and August 1pm to 5.30pm (Closed Tuesdays)

Running a major ski event in challenging snow conditions is never easy. A huge thank you goes to the Kangaroo Hoppet organisers, officials, volunteers, Falls Creek groomers and everyone else who put in the work behind the scenes. Without that effort, there simply would not have been a race.

And after a season that has asked plenty from the Falls Creek Nordic community, there was something pretty special about seeing 653 people get out there and make the most of the snow we had. That is what the Hoppet is all about. • Katerina Paul

The 32nd Kangaroo Hoppet may have looked a little different this year, but the important part remained the same: skiers were able to line up, race, ski with friends and family, and enjoy one of the biggest weekends on the Australian crosscountry skiing calendar.

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK - Winter 2026 Edition ELEVEN

COMFORTABLE SKIING forwards and to the inside edge. This is great for most people, the downside is that if you need to expand or modify these boots in any way you can have a noticeable effect on how the boot skis, and in some cases cause the boot to ‘collapse’ as the shape becomes critical to how the boot supports you.

Down the Plastics Rabbit Hole

W

ith all the biomechanical talk of the last few articles Ray, our Bootfitter and Industrial designer, was feeling a bit left out and I could sense that he wanted to spew forth some techy techy stuff about boots. So, I’ve let him have the reigns on this one. (Under close supervision…) We all know that ‘Oils ain’t Oils’ and let me tell you: plastics ain’t plastics. To the uninitiated there is an infinite number of plastics out there, all with their own brand names and grades. But as far as ski boots are concerned, we only really care about three types of plastics, and even then there’s only really two that really matter (to the more enthusiastic boot-fitting nerds among us). We’re not going to get too techy because the world of plastics is enormous, complicated, varied, won’t help you much and it’s a deep rabbit hole to go down accidentally… so we’ll talk about the generalities of plastic only. Let’s start in the middle, because that’s probably 80% of the skiing world. Polyurethane is the boot plastic of choice, its key qualities are: rebound, mouldability (holds a punch) and it grinds well. As a general rule, the downside is that its stiffness changes drastically with temperature, so make sure your bootfitter understands this and takes it into account. A floppy boot in Spring is as comfortable and effective as a sofa bed mattress. A lot of touring boots are incorporating Polyamide (nylons). This makes them much lighter, more expensive and slightly different to work with as far as expanding and grinding is concerned – a good boot-fitter should understand this. Race boots most often use PolyurethaneEther, an expensive Polyurethane blend. The other thing to take into account regarding plastics in ski boots is: how much plastic or how thick is the plastic in your boot? The big thing in boots at the moment is making boots lighter. You can do this by using more high-quality plastics (more expensive) or you can use less plastic in each boot (cheaper). Both approaches have challenges.

A CT Scan of a ski boot and the relevant thicknesses. Image – Courtesy of : https://www.tec-eurolab.com

will have a fairly uniform and thick wall plastic. This makes for a stiff boot with great rebound characteristics and feel and response in all directions. To decrease the weight of a boot, the manufacturer will often remove plastic from areas of the boot that are not supporting the key directions of force in a ski boot, ie.

Make sure your boot fitter has a plan for any mods they expect to make to your boots and that the boot they choose for you can accommodate these modifications. • Krista Sturday, SentinelSportsPodiatry.com.au

anorama Park played host to Storm the Park on Saturday 15th August. This comp is unique in that the format is a combined rails and jumps event. Our ski and snowboard freestyle competitors were judged on a combined score across both the rail section and the jump line, rewarding those who could bring consistency and creativity to all features in the park. Our Hotham competitors came across, and our local Falls Creek athletes rose to the occasion, with strong results across both the U15 and Open divisions. The depth of talent on display reflected the level of training that's gone into this part of the season. Big congratulations to all competitors.

at the 1968 and 1972 Winter Olympics. His 1969 World Cup downhill win at Val d'Isère made him the first non-European to win a men's downhill on the FIS World Cup circuit, and Australia's first alpine World Cup medal. He's regarded as one of Australia's greatest skiers and was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1985. Steve Lee was born in 1962 and also grew up skiing at Falls Creek. He competed in the 1984, 1988 and 1992 Winter Olympics over a career spanning almost 25 years. In 1985 he won the Super-G at Furano, Japan, becoming one of only three Australians ever to win a race on the Alpine World Cup circuit. You can register for the rail jam and the Milne-Lee Cup through Racing Events at Vail, and we look forward to celebrating after both events down at the Race Club with a BBQ on Saturday afternoon. • Edwina Coghlan, Falls Creek Race Club

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK - Winter 2026 Edition ELEVEN

WHY AMBULANCE SUBSCRIPTION Because It’s Smart

T

his publication has run similar articles before. And we will probably continue to run them each year. Your editor would hate to think that someone working or visiting this fabulous resort of ours ends up with a three or four thousand dollar bill for transport to hospital. It can and does happen – and it can be prevented. Read on. Previously we have quoted figures for this article. But, even without them, the common sense aspect of ambulance insurance is a ‘nobrainer.’ As an example of costs, your editor had a little hearty turn at Falls Creek during the Trade Fair @ Falls Creek. The fabulous and professional Ski Patrol team, from Patrol Director and several others attended – and will it was a tad embarrassing from my point of view, it was certainly eye opening and satisfying to witness first-hand the skill and professionalism all member exhibited.

Then it was into the Ambo and down to Alpine Health Mount Beauty. The good news is after and ECG and some blood tests, everything was looking good and home we went. Thanks team for a great job well done.

Victoria sorted it. The Good News Fact Number One: Ambulance membership is cheap. A family membership is now $106.73 per year. A single person membership is now $53.37 per year. In my humble opinion, these figures are way too cheap – but no-one can ever say they could not afford Ambulance Membership. A copy of the invoice your editor received for a trip from Falls Creek to Alpine Health Mount Beauty.

Then came the next bit. Several days later the invoice from Ambulance Victoria arrived (see image) – a total of $1927 to travel from Falls Creek Mount Beauty, Thank goodness I did not need to go to Albury or Melbourne. The good news is that I do have Ambulance Cover (and have had for many years) and a quick phone call and Email to Ambulance

They want to be offended because it gives them a sense of moral superiority.” John Cleese FOOD FOR THOUGHT I think some people confuse ‘freedom of speech’ with the idea that you must say everything you think. Freedom of Speech is the right to say what you want, but you should also take responsibility for what you say. Just because you have the right, doesn’t mean you can use it carelessly! Ricky Gervais MISSING BOOK This ‘Missing Book’ advert has appeared for quite some time now. Your Journo has purchased a digital copy from Melbourne University. But, the book itself is important – because it was given to a member of the community to be kept in perpetuity for the community. Titled “The Interaction between Land Use, the Environment and the Hydrology of the Bogong High Plains between 1850 and 1985” it is a vital piece of local history. Vietnam Veterans Day

T

he 18th August this year was the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in Vietnam - -one of the most significant battles fought by Australians during the Vietnam War. On 18 August 1966, Delta (D) Company, The Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR), defeated North Vietnamese and Vietcong troops during an ‘encounter’ battle in the Long Tan rubber plantation. The plantation was close to the 1st Australian Task Force base at Nui Dat. D Company suffered 42 casualties, including 18 dead – more than one-third of its strength. D Company's 105 men and 3 New Zealanders from 161 Battery, Royal New Zealand Artillery, fought for almost 4 hours against soldiers of the North

Vietnamese Army, who outnumbered them by 10 to one. Some 245 North Vietnamese and Vietcong troops were killed. Australians observe Vietnam Veterans' Day on the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. Around the country RSL members got together to remember this day and lay a wreath in memory. Our local RSL members laid a wreath prior to heading to Myrtleford for a joint service. Other community members were joined by a couple of local senior students at 11am to also lay a wreath. Next year, our local RSL will be hosting members from around the district to commemorate Vietnam Veterans Day here in Mount Beauty. •
