AEarlier this summer a lady came into the Visitor Centre with an enquiry. I asked where she had been. “I was going to do the mountain bike event, but I wasn’t happy with my bike so I went for a run.” “Where” was my question. “Watchbed Creek, Spion Kopje, Grey Hills, Mt Arthur, Quartz Ridge, Bogong Summit, Cleve Cole Hut, down T Spur, across Big River, up Duane Spur past Roper’s Hut, round past Mt Nelse back to Watchbed Creek” That’s the sort of thing people do – and it is amazing.
This weekend sees over 200 entrants taking on the challenge of walking, running or jogging from Falls Creek to Mt Hotham – but by a slightly different route to the Alpine Walking Track. Starting from Slalom Plaza, up over the top, down around Ruined Castle, then over to Pretty Valley, down to Dibbins Hut then back up a different route to come out at The General at Hotham. A grand opportunity to explore the alpine high country and some huts, develop your teamwork and feel elated at the end of it all.

Snow sports instructor Nikki McKilliam is preparing to take on the 100-mile Alpine Climb in celebration of a decade since a life-altering stroke.
Originally from Brisbane, a then 23-yearold Nikki spent her winters as a snow sports instructor in Falls Creek. She then lived the dream of traveling the world, chasing winters in various countries, which eventually took her to the alpine regions of Germany.
However, Nikki’s vibrant, active life took a sudden turn when she suffered an ischemic stroke – an extremely rare spinal stroke –while abroad.
The symptoms weren’t immediately clear, and it took over 32 hours for German doctors to diagnose her condition.
“At first, my physio thought it was a slipped disc. But when the symptoms became more severe, they recognised something more serious was at play and rushed me to the neurologist,” Nikki recalls.
As a healthy and fit 23-year-old, a stroke wasn't considered a likely diagnosis. However, after her first CT scan, the stroke was evident, and she was promptly transferred to the stroke ward.
“I lost function on my entire left side. I felt like a pin cushion, having blood thinners injected into me three times a day for nine days to clear the clot. Then the real challenge began. I had to
remap the wires from my brain to my muscles so they could move again.”
In the weeks that followed, Nikki taught herself how to walk, bend her leg, and even stand on tiptoes – all by observing how her right leg functioned and mimicking the movements with her left.
Incredibly, just six weeks after the stroke, Nikki completed a 10km run.
“It was slow, and I had a limp, but I did it. Once I proved to myself I could run again, nothing could stop me.”
Since then, Nikki has incorporated strength training into her routine, a concept new to her but one that has been vital for improving her body awareness and recovery.
Today, Nikki is the picture of resilience. To mark her 10-year anniversary of recovery, she’s taking on the Running Wild Alpine Challenge – a 100-mile run which is considered as one of the toughest and most spectacular mountain trail runs in the Southern Hemisphere.
“My willpower and belief in myself have been the most powerful tools in my recovery. It wasn’t easy, but I choose how I view and work with my new reality. The challenge is tough, but no matter the adversity, I will never stop fighting to reclaim what makes me, me.”

The Alpine Shire Council meeting has been moved from Bright to the Mount Beauty Community Centre in response to growing community concern over the proposed Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Dederang. This is our chance to ensure the newly elected councillors understand the risks this project poses to our valley. While council is not the final decision-maker, their stance will influence the outcome. A strong community turnout is critical to make it clear that this project is not welcome in our region.
The Moss Landing BESS fire in California serves as a wake-up call for regulators worldwide. Toxic contamination, soil and water pollution, and mass action lawsuits are in the early stages following its aftermath. Moss Landing, a 300-megawatt facility, was 80% destroyed in the fire. Yet, it was not in a high-risk bushfire zone - Dederang is. The Mint Renewables BESS proposed for Dederang is 200 megawatts, and Trina Solar’s proposal is even larger at 500 megawatts. These projects bring significant risks to our community, land, and water. Health impacts from the Moss Landing disaster are alarming, with residents
reporting respiratory problems, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rashes, and nosebleeds. Nature reserves were heavily polluted, and the health of surrounding soil, water, and farm produce is a serious concern. Our valley’s economy relies heavily on agriculture and tourism, both of which would suffer from similar contamination here.
The Alpine Shire Bushfire Planning Study (July 2024) categorises the bushland around the proposed site as ‘Grassy Dry Forest,’ and Dederang is listed as ‘High Risk’ under the Victorian Fire Risk Register. The study indicates extreme bushfire behaviour, including landscape-scale fires and ember storms - conditions that have already devastated our area in past fire seasons. Despite this, a hazardous facility is being proposed in an area already vulnerable to fire risks.
The State Planning Policy for Bushfire (Section 2.3) prioritises the protection of human life over all other policy considerations. This project directly contradicts that strategy, yet it continues to move forward.
This issue extends beyond Dederang—it’s about the future of the entire Alpine Shire. The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) has formally written to the Minister for Planning, urging the rejection of BESS proposals in the Upper Kiewa Valley. These proposals violate the Significant Landscape Overlay (SLO), a protection in place since the 1970s. Council has a responsibility to uphold the SLO and safeguard our region from inappropriate developments that threaten our landscape, agriculture, tourism, and way of life.

‘Look Both Ways’ by Lesley Duxbury is the gallery's next exhibition – held from Fridy 28th February to Sunday April 6th.
In ‘Look Both Ways,’ Duxbury explores perception and time by photographing the landscape around Lake Guy using a Black Mirror, a small, convex lens popular with 18th-century artists and tourists. By facing away from the landscape and viewing it through the mirror, Duxbury captures a distilled reflection behind her while simultaneously confronting the scene ahead - merging past and present into a single, transformed view. This interplay invites viewers to reconsider how they engage with natural environments.

Alpine Shire Council invites business operators across the Alpine Shire to a series of tourism update and networking events in February.
Attendees will be given the opportunity to learn about upcoming tourism plans and campaigns and how they can be used to inform their own plans to effectively market their business.
Council will also share their reflections on the past 12 months, with Tourism North East (TNE) attending the evenings in Bright and Mount Beauty to provide valuable marketing advice.
Alpine Shire Mayor, Cr Sarah Nicholas, encouraged operators to take advantage of these events to network with other businesses across the region.
"These events provide people in the industry with the opportunity to hear from other professionals in the field," she said.

Mount Beauty children’s author, Angela Toniolo, realises her dream of becoming a published author with the release of her debut picture book about a child plane spotter.
Debut picture book for local children’s author explores plane spotting in WWII. Children’s author Angela Toniolo welcomes the release of her debut picture book, Mavis, The Little Plane Spotter, on March 5. The book was inspired by a radio interview with an Albury resident who shared her experiences as a child plane spotter in rural NSW during WWII. ‘I’d never heard of plane spotters, so I jumped online and discovered everything I could,’ said Angela. ‘My research led me to a story about the youngest WWII plane spotter in Australia, and that’s when I knew I’d found the perfect character for a picture book!’ Mavis, the Little Plane Spotter is about ten-year-old Mavis who wants to help the war effort at home but is told she is too young. When she discovers she can volunteer alongside her older sister, she becomes an enemy plane spotter. Imagine Mavis’s surprise when she spies an enemy bomber flying over her home town.You will have to read the book to find out what happens next!
Angela decided to pursue a career in writing picture books and junior fiction novels during COVID-19 lockdowns. In 2023, she won a US writing competition for a picture book about grief, and she has had four articles published in the NSW Department of Education and Communities literary magazine, The School Magazine.
When she’s not at her day job as a primary school integration aide, she’s writing and chasing future book deals. Angela looks forward to the launch of her picture book in March and organising author visits to schools, libraries and book shops. “I have booked two launches so far - one at the Mount Beauty Library and one at Dymocks Albury. I’ve already had schools

express interest in author visits,” she said. “Mavis will make a great addition to any school library with its themes of family, resilience, community, historical events, and volunteerism.
