Round One - Falls Creek The National Gravity Enduro Series acts as the qualifying series for the Enduro World Series. See mention in the article with Ben McIlroy. Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August. The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events. Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Cost is $50 per day or $90 for 2 days. Go to www.bluedirt. com.au to book. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the set slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!! The weekend’s program sort of goes like this.

FROM THE CEO No Costumes Required… They don’t wear capes, spray spiderwebs, wear bat suits, put on armour, throw shields, shoot arrows, or slam down hammers, turn green when angry, wear their underwear over tights or thankfully work for Marvel or DC… because the Falls Creek Ski Patrol don’t need gimmicks. They are the real deal (and they’ll tell you, they pretty much have the best job in the world too).

Snowsports, no matter what the discipline - be it: skiing, snowboarding, cross country, snow shoeing, back country touring etc, all are an amazing way to enjoy the great outdoors. However, occasionally you may need the assistance of the men and women in black and red. Aside from the many other roles they perform, it’s also what you don’t see and what they do when you’re still asleep that is just as important and vital to ensuring your safety when on the mountain. Every run across the mountain is checked daily, every hazard marked, safety ropes and barriers checked, snow assesseddepthsetc… then the team meet daily with Vail Resorts teamourasmountainneededtooperationsmountainsteamplanwhat’stokeeptheassafepossibleforallguests.Theworklonghours, often undertaking openings and performing closing sweeps in darkness, in blizzards or on blue sky days –they are always there.

Pre-season training and accreditation to comply with the Ski Patrol Association’s professional credentials ensures these first responders are ready for pretty much anything. Furthermore, the Falls Creek team are made up of a mix of experience, youth, trainees, and seasoned professionals - from a mix of backgrounds and diverse skill sets. The team is made up of doctors, nurses, paramedics, police, fire rescue, tradies, MBA’s, pharmacists, engineers, teachers, a retiree or two… to name just a few of their ‘occupations.’ They’re a diverse bunch, highly skilled and specialised on and off the ski Contributingfield.to the teams’ broad experience is an active exchange program with resorts across the world – USA, Canada, Italy and Japan. In resort, for the whole season this year we have exchange patrollers from Palisades (CA-USA) and Keystone Resort (CO-USA). This program not only assists the patrollers in attaining new skills, bringing knowledge from around the world, but also provides the opportunity for career development and to experience how other resorts do patrolling, bringing, and sharing best practises. Hopefully you won’t ever need them, but if you do, you can rest assured they’ll be there.

Whilst I’m not allowed to have favourites, my regular winter season brew is from Slides (red umbrellas in Slalom Plaza – did I mention South Melbourne Market dim sims!!!), and I’m a regular at 1550 too. But thankfully, venues are well dispersed to ensure that if you’re in the Gully (or just been discharged from the Med Centre) –you’ve got Alpine Pepper in the day shelter, whilst in the Village Bowl – the Frying Pan Inn has coffee and great baked goods. If in the heart of the village, Milch Bar & Café is popular with locals.

Falls Creek

FROM THE CEO

Back in September 2020, local legend and three-time Winter Olympian, Steve Lee, had a debilitating stroke. He is currently fighting his way back through extensive rehabilitation to some life back on snow. The operation now runs in his name with all profits going to his recovery. There's nothing that brings Steve more joy than riding a fresh line, but almost more so watching others enjoy that same feeling. So take a lap for Steve, your best day on snow awaits!

Getting up early and hitting the slopes whilst you’re all sleeping does raise the question, where do the ski patrol team get their morning “cup of Joe”? Well... Foodie Tip(s) of the Week: Your morning “cuppa” at Falls Creek is taken very seriously. Some teams have been up all night (ie. groomers/snowmakers –also note – they generally don’t drink coffee when they finish!), or most of the night, or since 5am in most cases…so that first coffee is an essential part of the day.

On piste you’ve got three options, Cloud 9 – great when dropping the kids off for lessons, Blue Brumbies – after your warmup on Main Street (good selection of fried food too!), Dickie Knees if you’re over on Ruined Castle and if you’re heading out for some cross country, snowshoeing, alpine walking or tobogganing, there’s Windy Corner Café too. And remember, if you’ve not bought your own refillable (and clean) keep cup, make sure to dispose of that takeaway cup properly and look for the green tridirectional arrows on the cup or lid (which means it can be recycled) and please put it in the right bin. Now, stop sipping that cuppa and get out there and hit the slopes.

Be part of the team! As a member of the Falls Creek Race Club, young members can... Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK - Winter 2022 Edition THIRTEEN4

We would also like to thank ‘Min’ Melinda Middleton, DWA Victoria Camps Manager and her beautiful team for taking care of, not just Andrew, but also myself therefore providing a relaxing time for me knowing Andrew was taken care of and all his needs were met all of the time; an excepting and compassionate group. We can’t wait to come Alexback.Peerman and Michelle Chu were always around to pick up any pieces and carry all our heavy bits so Andrew was safe and had all his equipment at hand. Also we would like to thank Cloud 9 for taking care of us all, keeping to schedule and having delicious healthy lunches ready to give us the energy to continue a productive day.

DWA member, Andrew Hall, with his partner Sharon Abdallah attended one of the regular DWA camps last weekend. They contributed this little thankyou and this paper has much pleasure in printing it. We wanted to say thank you for an amazing weekend with DWA. Andrew and I had an amazing time, it was our 4th camp and we would definitely have to say our most successful. From the moment we arrived everything was planned and geared up for Andrew and it was so well planned that we didn’t have to think of a thing. Andrew has always enjoyed the camps but this one was exceptional. Andrew has always spent time on the snow and had fun but during this camp he actually achieved skiing like he did pre his accident. The team tried things that had never been tried before with huge success. This enabled Andrew to take on two different runs including Wombats Ramble and Drovers Dream. He hasn’t skied that distance in 20 something years.

Also a big thank you to Falls Creek’s Adaptive ski instructor Lou McGowanBrown who was so approachable and the encouragement he gave us, so optimistic. All in all it was by far an fabulous outstanding weekend which was enjoyed by all. Thank you, from Andrew Hall and Sharon. •

JD: “A big part of this has been the mentality that everyone needs to be a leader; it’s everyone’s job to show up to training with the intention of using their strengths to make the group stronger and better. Everyone has a super different personality and leadership style, so when everyone brings something to the group, we all get better together. 4985Lakeside Ave, Mount Beauty www westpeakhotel.com.au

Jessie is an icon in this sport for a multitude of reasons. Yes, her accomplishments on the snow speak for themselves as to why this statement rings true, but while she isn’t training or racing, she is busy providing encouragement to others and modelling affirmative action for global change.

03 5754

JD: “I video chat with my husband every day - even if it’s just a short visit around a big time change, having the chance to see each other and hear how his day has been keeps me connected to home and helps me deal with the homesickness. I think one of the biggest things we do as a team is look out for each other like a family unit, and we truly feel like one big family when we’re on the road together for four months at a time. When someone is having a tough day, another teammate can be there to cheer them up and help them out. It makes traveling around the world feel a lot easier when you know your teammates have your back.”

NEXT WEEK @ WEST PEAK

Last week, I had the honour of interviewing a very influential figure in the cross country skiing world. This woman is effortlessly effervescent. A strong, sunny-side up skier who wears her war-paint of grit and glitter proudly as she sets off on her skis that seem to fly even faster up close than what you see on your TV. She is of course the recent Beijing Olympic Games Gold Medalist from the USA, Jessie Diggins.

JD: “I have truly found the ski community here to be so open, welcoming and friendly, and I think that’s really special - everyone feels they can belong on the ski trail, and it’s a sport where everyone can be included. I think that’s what draws people to the sport, because it’s low injury risk, an awesome workout, but most importantly it’s a super fun way to enjoy winter outside with friends on the trails.”

EJ: It has been greatly motivating for XC skiers here seeing you on our home trails. Is there something unique about Aussie XC that you think we could use to promote our sport more in this country?

EJ: Traveling around Europe for a race season is incredibly rewarding, however, the focus it requires and the distance from our home supports can sometimes be mentally challenging. What kinds of things do you get up that help you maintain your mojo while you’re on the World Cup circuit or travelling for extended periods of time?

Recently I was able to ask Jessie some questions about her trip to Australia and learn more about the inside workings of being one of the best athletes in the world.

JD: “We really wanted to spend a few weeks on snow to train hard but also have a chance to improve our on-snow technique, especially in classic skiing, as roller skiing just isn’t quite the same! We’d heard for a while that the skiing in Falls Creek is awesome so we finally got an opportunity to come check it out!”

1

JD: “We have really loved our camp here! The skiing has been great, awesome snow coverage and super friendly skiers out on the trails. I also really, really loved getting to see kangaroos for the first time… I was really looking forward to that!”

Two of the many roles that Jessie has with organisations alongside her skiing career include being a spokesperson for ‘The Emily Program,’ an organisation dedicated to helping those affected by eating disorders, and being a board member for ‘Protect Our Winters,’ advocating for engagement in the issues of climate change.

Talking with Jessie

EJ: Jessie, what were the reasons for you coming Down Under, to a little place called Falls Creek?

EJ: How have you found your time here in the Australian High Country, what have you enjoyed and what has been the highlight of your trip so far?

EJ: Results on the world stage by women on the US team have elevated significantly over the past 10 years, with much of this success being attributed to the exceptionally united culture of the women’s team. What encourages this powerful team dynamic?

EJ: One of the many things you are admired for is your unique ability to be able to use grit and tenacity to push yourself over a finish line in a way that surpasses any other athlete on the World Cup. In the moment that you switch into this gear, to dig deep into this zone, what thought is running through your mind?

JD: “So many things! I’d say it’s totally OK to love glitter and sparkle and also be incredibly tough and gritty at the same time - you don’t have to choose one or the other. I’d also say that it’s OK to not be perfect, and in fact, don’t try to be ‘perfect,’ just be you and do the best you can each day, then feel proud of your effort. And when you need help with anything in life, be sure to reach out and ask for it, because leaning on your support team for help isn’t weakness, it’s a secret superpower.”

EJ: Thank you so very much Jessie and may I wish you all the best for your career!

EJ: You have, and continue to, achieve so much at such a young age, but it hasn’t come without its trials and tribulations. If you could say one thing to your 10 year-old self, what would you tell her?

The other huge thing is that we all collectively take pride and ownership of the results from our team. So for example, when Julia Kern has a great day and an awesome race, I feel joy and pride in her racing not only because I’m her friend, but because as her teammate I helped push her in training and helped her to become a better athlete. So even if I don’t personally have an awesome day, I can take pride in being part of the strength of the team, and I know that lives on even when I retire from sport. And the same is true in reversewhen I medalled at the Olympics, that medal belongs to the whole team because it took all these awesome women pushing me in training and helping me become a better skier to make that race possible.”

Beauty THIS WEEK - Winter 2022 Edition THIRTEEN8

JD: “I think this is pretty personal for each athlete. Some need to be very serious and focused, some like to have fun and stay really chilled. For me, I perform best when I’m happy and having fun, so I like to have very focused concrete goals for the race and know what I want to achieve from the day, but then be flexible and not waste energy being too nervous about the things I can’t control.”

CROSS COUNTRY

EJ: When you stand ready on the start line of a race, your disposition appears focused, in control, and as though you’re about to have a ton of fun. What do you do to help yourself ‘get in the zone’ before you race?

JD: “Usually, it’s because I’ve asked myself how I want to feel at the finish line. When I cross that line and look back on the race, I never like to have any ‘what if’s’ left out there. Even though I’m the only one who will ever know the truth, I want to know that I gave everything I had and left all my energy out on course, and if I don’t, I’ll have regrets and have to wonder what could have been if I had been brave enough to go for it and dig deeper in that moment. So even though it’s hard to get into that head space, it’s easier to go for it than have to wonder how I’d feel if I had tried a little harder! That said, I don’t go that deep into the pain cave every single race, because it’s incredibly energy expensive. So I have to pick and choose when I’m going to really leave it all out there and when I’m going to give 97% (for example, if I’m at the start of the Tour de Ski and I need to meter out my energy over 10 days). So I try to really follow a thoughtful plan for when I’m going to go hard and when I’m going to bury myself.”

The property enjoys an enviable corner position with spectacular mountain views. Located in the heart of the Falls Creek's Village Bowl Apartment 27C is a true ski in and ski out property. This location is only metres from the Eagle, Summit and Gully chairlifts and is at the bottom of a couple of ski home trails. Featuring four spacious bedrooms and two bathrooms, it can cater for 12 people very comfortably. Apartment 27 has a modern yet warm feel and is sold fully furnished. It is spilt over two levels and features a large open plan living and dining area with balcony on entry, plus drying cupboard, and a large bedroom with en suite and spa bath. Upstairs are the further bedrooms, bathroom, spacious laundry, and the owner’s lock-away storage room. This apartment is situated in a Managed complex with a good rental return history. Figures are available via request. During the summer months, (described as everything not winter), the location can be easily accessed by car with adequate parking nearby. While the enjoyment of Falls Creek as a winter resort is undoubted, it is the growing suite of summer activities that adds untold value to a purchase in the village. Over the last decade, much work has gone into developing and securing summer trade. The resort now boasts in excess of 40km of mountain bike trails – with some being accessed from the Village Bowl. Add to these the many kilometres of aqueducts and management vehicle tracks and your exploring, whether on foot or on your bike is endless. The Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing is an iconic Australian walk of international standard being promoted by Parks Victoria. The new Trails, Tales and Tucker guided walks are also proving to be a real hit.

It was the first event the Lake View Centre has been able to hold post-COVID and was a fantastic success, with dozens of families coming down for egg and bacon rolls and sausages in bread. A raffle was also held with some great gifts for dad being won, and which raised over $400 for new resources for both the Lake View and Tawonga Children’s services. The event would not have been possible without the support from some very generous local sponsors. The staff, the parents and children would like to thank Tawonga South Butchery, Mount Beauty Bakery, Tawonga South Newsagency & Post Office, Argent Silversmith, Settlers Tavern, Mary Jones and the new shop in Kiewa Crescent, Little Oddly for their wonderful donations. •

With a Trivia Night to celebrate 75 Years of Falls Creek. The first ski lodge in the village was called Skyline was located close to the International Poma lift line (prior to the Inter being built) and was built, ready to open for the 1947 season. And while there was skiing from the SEC workers huts at Rocky Valley, Skyline Lodge was the start of Falls Creek Village. The name Falls Creek was the radio call sign given as an identifier for the worker Toni St Elmo and his wife Skippy who lived in a two room hut at the bottom of the Gully (just above the falls) in 1946. Therefore, everyone is invited to attend the official 75 years of Falls Creek celebrations. Join us for a night of fun as we shine a light back on the history, iconic figures, and classic Falls Creek moments we have shared over the last seven and a half decades. Expect plenty of laughs, giveaways, prizes, and exceptional company.
