For those old enough to remember, Claytons is the brand name of a nonalcoholic, non-carbonated beverage, packaged to resemble a whiskey bottle… it’s marketing punchline being “the drink you have when you’re not having a drink.”
visit - on behalf of the stakeholders and business operators, a huge thank you for being so tolerant and accommodating. To those prevented by border closures, city and regional lockdowns, we missed you and hope to see you next season, or over the summer for that matter. Falls Creek is just as stunning in the summer.
TWell, this year’s ski season could be summarised in pretty much the same way… “the season you have when you’re not having a season!”
he National Gravity Enduro Series acts as the qualifying series for the Enduro World Series. See mention in the article with Ben McIlroy.
What started with the great anticipation and equal amounts of trepidation, with hope the latter would dissolve as the season progressed, got off to a terrific start with strong early snowfalls and record visitation, with the resort heaving with guests all finally able to enjoy some #fallsfreedom.
Alas, despite negative COVID-19 tests becoming mandatory requirements for anyone to enter the ski fields and with border lockdowns and a re-emergence of outbreaks across Australia, lockdown five, six, then seven scuttled what looked like the perfect season. We had above average snowfall, a record storm dumping the single largest daily total of snow on the resort since we started collecting snow depth data, then to add further insult, a nice flurry has just topped up the resort for the final couple of weeks of the season.
Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August. The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.
To the many people lucky enough to

Thanks to all who follow on social media and for your positive comments, support and encouragement. The positivity was uplifting to receive in the face of another adverse and extremely trying year. Your thoughts and messages from afar contribute to the fabric of what makes ski towns and the tribe so great. A ski resort without people is just another mountain with snow on it. What makes Falls Creek special, is the people. So, thank you too all.
As I have commented in an earlier column, the ups and downs of this season have pushed everyone in the industry to breaking point. The unimaginable eventuated and only added to the stress of trying to recover from 2020. The resort businesses have experienced unprecedented hardship. Mitigating for low snow is one thing, but mitigating for no people, no visitors or no guests is incomprehensible.
The Victorian ski industry accounts for $1.1bn in gross state product, employing over 10,000 people and is the cornerstone of the High Country tourism product. Given the industry size, it is too big to fail.
Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Cost is $50 per day or $90 for 2 days. Go to www.bluedirt. com.au to book. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig

Those that were able to make it to Falls certainly enjoyed the experience. Pic – Tim @ TopShots
The consequences would be the equivalent of the loss of the Spring Racing carnival, or equivalent to the already occurred closure of the GM or Ford manufacturing facilities in Victoria! However, with far with greater socio-geographic consequences.
No time to be smelling the roses during this weekend’s Gravity Enduro. Pic - Jiri Cech.
In the words of Winston Churchill – ‘if you’re going through hell, keep going”…. “never, never, never give up…”
To suggest the industry needs to be recognised and commended for courageously and painstakingly enduring another shocking year, is an understatement, but nonetheless, on behalf of all its members and the tribe of snow sports enthusiasts, a huge thank you. Stay safe…and see you in 2022. Thanks! Stuart Smythe, CEO Falls Creek Resort Management
Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the set slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!

It’s been a tough winter (understatement!). But there is so much more to this area and the rest of the year. Summer is that part of the year we call ‘green season’ – from the end of this winter to the start of next winter and during this period, there are a myriad of activities, interests and events that you can enjoy. Here is a little bit on the biking you can enjoy during the green season.
Falls Creek has developed an excellent reputation for our mountain bike trails. There is lots of diversity and graded single tracks that enable novice riders to move into the sport, learn the area and progress as the confidence builds.
Then there is the full testosterone stuff –heart pumping adrenaline generating trails that make you work – and enjoy! With over 40 km of trails, there is plenty for everyone. Add to this the regular Blue Dirt Mountain

Bike Shuttle service which will get you to the top of the Summit and pick you up at the bottom of Flowtown – and you’re in heaven! If you happen to do any damage, we have our ‘Bike Patrol’ – fully qualified Ski Patrol First Aiders who can handle a bike, a chain-saw and a bandage – and they are on duty all the time that Blue Dirt are running shuttles.
One other major advantage at Falls Creek is that just about all of the trails lead you back to the village – and from the bottom of Flowtown at Howman’s Gap, you can ride back up the road or be picked up by a friend or family – without getting off road.
If the testosterone trails are not your cup of tea, then Falls Creek is surrounded by about 30km of Aqueduct Trails, management vehicle tracks and connecting dirt roads – all suitable for a leisurely ride on your bikes with the kids. An Aqueduct Trail is actually a vehicle track that runs along the side of a man-made aqueduct which is carrying water from one place to another. They were built

as part of the Kiewa Hydro-electric Scheme and form an integral part of the water supply for generating environmentally-friendly electricity. These trails give you access to the Bogong High Plains and can take you to places for wonderful photos and picnics.

There have been many statements put together to describe this season. Just about all of our business operators and staff have had to draw heavily upon reserves of strength and resilience to get through – and we are still here.
A little prayer your editor picked up somewhere seems appropriate: “Lord, give me the strength to change the things I can; the grace to accept the things I cannot; and the wisdom to know the difference!”
After the toughest couple of years this area has ever seen (not forgetting that millions of others are also doing it tough) let’s look at what we have:
No-one is dropping bombs on us or trying to shoot us! We have a couple of dollars in the bank – and if we don’t, that’s the bank manager’s problem! We live in a wonderful part of the world – surrounded by a pristine environment with beautiful clean air and

crystal clear water. And if we are feeling a little down, we have a lot of great mates around us where we can go and have a chat or a beer and talk about the problems. Many among us have taken on new challenges – like walking to the top of the hill and getting a couple of runs in – or doing the Hoppet in our own distinctive way – or just making the most of the area and the two hours to get in much needed and appreciated exercise! We are all very lucky and very fortunate to be living in this area. That’s the truth!
The season has been hard, but we are through it. This edition is the last for this winter, covering the last ten day period from Friday 24th to Sunday 3rd October, the official close of the season. The next edition will be released on Friday 15th October with a lead in to what we can look forward to over summer.
Activities like Ignition and the mountain biking shuttles, the Mile High Dragon Boat Regatta (in November this year), Trails, Tales and Tucker guided walks, Peaks Challenge, the Alpine Challenge and many other fabulous events to get involved intouch wood!

This Week in Falls Creek and Mount Beauty has just completed 42 years of being published weekly in winter. It is unique to Falls Creek Resort and to the Falls Creek community and not another ski resort in this country has a publication like it. Competing with Facebook, your editor and the team have tried to be positive, to keep you informed and to produce a quality publication that visitors and locals enjoy reading …and moving in to the digital age, it is now on line and you can subscribe and have it sent digitally to you each time the paper is published. While reading on line, you can also click on any listed website in any advert or article and be taken straight to that site.
In closing, there are many people and businesses to thank.
The advertisers: These are the people that make this paper. Without the advertisers, we would not have a paper – and your support of those advertisers is critical to the success of this paper.
The readers: There is nothing nicer that the kind comment from residents and members of the community who just say “Thanks, we love reading your paper” That makes our day. And if a couple of people are expressing this sentiment, then we know there are many more out there feeling the same way.
The Team: Simone (The Social Knot) who does the digital stuff, and the posts on Facebook, and writes the occasional very good article, thanks for your fabulous work.

Lee, the graphic designer at Specialty Press, who does the layout and the creative stuff with the paper and the adverts, your work is greatly appreciated - thankyou.
The whole team at Specialty Press who do a fabulous job and have never let the paper down – thank you so much.
Over the years we have had many fine comments on the fact that the paper has always had very good photos on the cover and throughout. The reason for that is simple. Some very professional photographers have supplied photos for the paper. A very appreciative thanks to Chris Hocking, Charlie Brown, the team at Tops Shots photography, Ern Reeders (for the bird shots). Phil Rumpff (orchid photos) and Roslyn Anne for the Kiewa Valley shots.
My delivery team, Ava, Ben W, Ben N, Teagan, Lilly, Pepper and the rest of the kids who do a great job in all weather conditions – thanks for your great efforts.
To the Team at ATS who were very helpful in getting the kids up and around the mountain with their packs.
To best mate Noel who delivers the Mount Beauty Tawonga South and Tawonga area, your help is much appreciated – and to the team at Geoff’s Freight who deliver the paper to the RMB’s between Tawonga and Dederang, thank you also.
Now, it is time to look forward to a pleasant spring and all of its colour, summer and the range of outdoor activities and then the

changing colours of autumn as we gear up for what we hope will be a full blown winter with heaps of people and even more snow. Take Care everyone – and thanks for your support. • Ken Bell

There is an old saying that goes like “Give a man a job he loves and he will never work again!” And this suits Will Hood who has just taken over the Tawonga South Butchery.
Will, his wife Monica and their two young kids arrived in the valley in the early 2000’s – initially as part of the team that ran the Bogong Hotel and made it a fun pub to visit. In 2004 they purchased property out the back, calling it Mt Emu Farm. It was here that Will and Moni raised their kids and developed the property – to the extent where, over the last ten years they have been hosting functions like weddings, birthday parties and buck’s nights – and doing the catering. It was this process that leads Will to the butchering industry.
The property at Mt Emu Farm was ideal to raise stock and Will set up a butchering department where he could slaughter, skin, eviscerate, break down and prepare the meat for consumption – to be enjoyed by guests at many of the functions.
Interestingly, Will’s great grandfather was a butcher and his grandfather was a camp cook so the love of butchering sort of followed through in the family.
FWhen good mate Gavin Thurkettle put his Tawonga South Butchery up for sale it didn’t take Will long to determine that here was an opportunity to further his skills and to get more involved in something he loves. The kids have grown up, Moni has her own very successful shop, Sassy Road, in the main street, and the time seemed right. Hence the business has changed hands and

Will is now the proud owner at Tawonga South Butchery surrounded by a great team of helpful friendly and professional staff. Will is passionate about the ‘Paddock to Plate’ aspect of where your food comes from and is very keen to talk with local suppliers about their product and retailing it through the business. Recently Will has been sourcing pork and beef that have come from the Mittagundi Outdoor Education Centre over at Shannon Vale and has been butchered at Wangaratta Abattoirs – which is the avenue that most of the local product comes from.
Plans for the future include continually sourcing local product out of this beautiful valley, continuing to supply Falls Creek with a regular service as well as a local delivery service in the Upper Kiewa Valley

Also the traditional Thursday delivery of fresh seafood from the Melbourne markets will continue, but a tip here is to phone and pre-order what you would like. There is nothing worse than heading to the butcher prior to dinner time to find that the bulk of the seafood has gone.

There’s a wattle blooming every day, somewhere in our land, From the misty alpine passes to the burning desert sand.
From the Eastern coastal fringes where the wattle grows the best,
To the lonely rugged gorges of the Kimberley out West.
The wattle is our symbol, and a hundred years before Henry Lawson wrote of the shearers’ strikes he saw---
“We’ll make the tyrants feel the sting o’ those that they would throttle, They needn’t say the fault is ours if blood should stain the wattle.”
Of all the native trees the wattle wins the test, For it blooms in golden trusses and the wild birds make their nest.
High up in the canopy, well in from the borders,
Snug and safe from mankind and aerial marauders.
Sprigs of wattle went along when Aussies left for war, To the poppyfields of Flanders, beneath the cannons’ roar.
The Diggers kept the wattle close --- those brave and hardened men, And the wattle was their talisman, to get back home again.

Australians love the wattle, and the mighty river gums,
That grow up on the Murray, and no matter what fate comes,
No matter where we travel, no matter where we roam
It’s the Wattle and the Redgum that draw our hearts back home.
