BOGONG VILLAGE What’s Happening?

W

e hear that question a fair bit around town. The short answer is – quite a lot! There are short and long term plans afoot. Last year our community said loud and clear: ‘we want to see Bogong reactivated, but with a mixture of uses, not just short term winter accommodation.’ To get things moving in that direction, last November three houses were leased to people working in the area. Since then, the dam walk has reopened, the barbeques are working, the gardens are being lovingly brought back to their best. There’s a growing sense of community, with residents and visitors making the most of the big fireplace and

perhaps even the odd glass of wine down by the lake. As the ski season approaches, several more houses have been leased to resort employers as worker housing. This is a win for everyone: it brings life to Bogong; reduces pressure on accommodation at Falls Creek (it’s hard to fit all our visitors, let alone the staff who their Gravity visits comfortable); hemake National Enduro Series and theacts staffas getthe a house with proper qualifying series for the facilities,Enduro not justWorld a room, only See 20 minutes Series. mention down hill.with Ben McIlroy. in the the article

FALLS CREEK ICE PLUNGE The (in)Famous Ice Plunge Returns!

ou may call it “stating the bleedin’ obvious” that there are reasons we haven’t been able to stage the traditional Falls Creek Ice Plunge over the last couple of years. Can anyone tell us what the reason might have been? OK, well the good news is that there will definitely be an Ice Plunge this year. Are you brave enough to face the chilly challenge of the Falls Creek Ice Plunge? This annual ritual sees fancy-dressed clad locals and visitors take a dip into the frigid waters of the Rocky Valley Lake. This traditional custom is always performed on the first day of winter as an offering to snow gods to secure a bountiful winter season. Not only that, but all donations received go to support the incredible work of Fight MND in battling Motor Neuron Disease and searching for a cure. There are also over $2,000 worth of prizes up for grabs, donated by our amazing local stakeholders, hot drinks, a barbecue breakfast and warming fire pits available following the swim. A little tip – it’s usually warmer in the water than out of it! At 1600m above sea level, Rocky Valley Lake is Australia’s highest significant body of water. Air temperatures are commonly around 0°C at this altitude and water temperatures are expected to be around 3°C to 4°C. To encourage participation, plungers will be enticed into the water chasing over 30 rubber ducks. With a heap of incredible prizes up for grabs all kindly donated by on-mountain and Mount Beauty businesses, plungers can get hold of meal vouchers, cash vouchers and even an entire resort entry. Not only that but all proceeds from the $10 entry fee will go to support the incredible work of Fight MND in battling Motor Neuron Disease.

Fight MND Co-founder and Patron Neale Daniher and the wider Daniher clan will launch the eighth version of the famous blue beanie at the Big Freeze 8 at the MCG on Monday 13th June (the Monday of the Queen’s Birthday weekend). So why not come along to the Rocky Valley Foreshore and participate. Or if threedegree water and tiny swimming trunks isn't your thing, you can just donate and enjoy a breakfast roll cooked by the SES barbecue crew. (But you can’t work at Falls Creek if you haven’t done the plunge!) What: Falls Creek Ice Plunge. When: Wednesday 1st June. Time: 10am - 12noon. Where: Rocky Valley Foreshore, Falls Creek. Why: A FightMND fundraiser, and an annual offering to the Snowgods. How: Register at https://www.fallscreek. com.au/ice-plunge-sign-up/. MOUNT BEAUTY RUNNING FESTIVAL On a Glorious Autumn Day

A

round 250 runners enjoyed fabulous autumn weather on Saturday 21st May as they participated in the annual Mount Beauty Running Festival. Previously started back in 1980 as the Mount Beauty Marathon when the runners went out along the Kiewa Valley Highway for 21km and then back, the event has seen some changes. Over the last 15 or so years, the event was known as the Mount Beauty Half Marathon, with runners heading out Damms Road and Mountain Creek Road for 11 and a bit Km. Recently, the infrastructure and staff required to stage an event like this saw changes implemented and a different type of event was born. Comprising four separate events, the festival caters for all ages and abilities with a variety of distances and terrain. The flagship event is the 14km trail run which takes runners on a journey out of town and then up into the Alpine National Park. As well as sections of delightful single trail and 4wd management tracks, the trail run has steep climbs and descents, river crossings and rock scrambling to keep competitors on their toes.

The trail run attracted the most interest, but road runners were catered for by the traditional 10km event which follows an undulating out-and-back course past farms and vineyards out Damms Road. This year the event was conducted with the magnificent backdrop of a dusting of snow on the peak of Mt Bogong. Catering for youngsters, walkers and those who are happy with a shorter distance was the 3km event comprising one lap of the Mount Beauty Pondage. And for the very young, and to add to the carnival atmosphere on the day, there was a casually organised sprint race on the oval towards the end of the festivities. Festival organisers Kangaroo Hoppet Inc. acknowledge that the event is made possible by the financial support provided by the Mount Beauty Bendigo Community Bank. The organisers would also like to thank Mount Beauty Foodworks for generously supplying the food and drink for the food stations. This year’s event attracted a field of quality runners. LET IT SPARKLE Mount Beauty Illumination Project

R

ecently this paper presented a report from the drivers of the Christmas Tree Project – which proved to be a huge success. We are now very happy to inform the community of another extremely rewarding and attractive project taking place as we speak (read!) The Mount Beauty Illumination Project is an initiative of the Upper Kiewa Valley Lions Club (UKVLions). Funding for the project was generously provided by the Mount Beauty Community Bendigo Bank, AGL via grants and UKV Lions. The project – a year from commencement to completion had an aim of installing fairy lights at the entrance to the Mount Beauty Business District and nearby park lands. The goal with this, like many Lions Projects is to add to the vibrancy of the township and in this project, to invigorate the village with a warm and welcoming nigh time entrance, one that presents the village as pretty, calm and welcoming for both the community and visitors. We started in 2021 with our applications for grants to fund the project with a view to placing the lights on the Post Office as the Focal Point of the township and extended lighting onto 21 trees in the nearby Hydro and SK Pearce parkland. The lights themselves were acquired from a Queensland distributor, they are all Solar, are permanently in the trees, and consist of 14 sets of commercial quality lights (basically 60 meters of light strands per tree; complemented by eight sets of smaller units on smaller trees).

Above: The trees in Hydro Park are looking a lot brighter – thanks to the work of our local Lions club members (and others) …and (below) our freshly refurbished Post Office also looks a treat with the new lights. Pics – Courtesy Brian Rochford

from the Alpine Shire Council, the Mount Beauty Chamber of Commerce, the UKV Community Association and the owner of the Post Office. We also investigated the lights effects on flora and fauna and settled on warm white as the best colour option, and non-flickering. We used, where we could, local product from local suppliers to attach the lights and local trades for the install. The UKV Lions would like sincerely thank our supporters for this project:

To make it all happen we approached our local Community Bank (twice to meet a change in supplier costs) and AGL, and were successful in obtaining their financial support. The project sought and obtained authority and advice for the lights placement

MOTORING TIPS Preparing For Winter

• Check your battery. Cold weather is hard on all batteries. Make sure yours is in good nick. • Replace your wiper blades and keep your washer bottle full. Trying to rid your windscreen of ice with your wipers will only damage the blades. • Check the condition of your tyres – or even consider getting winter tyres- more grip in slippery conditions. • Make sure your tire pressure is exactly what it should be. • Check your wheel chains and ensure that you know how to fit them correctly. Too many problems are caused by people not knowing how to fit chains correctly! • Check the amount of coolant/anti-freeze in your radiator. Our Service Centres have a Glycometer which will measure how cold your radiator fluid can get before freezing. • Carry a few emergency supplies, like a blanket, warm gloves, ice scraper, shovel – in case you get stuck out on the road.

OUR CANDLES A Lovely Story

L

ee and the team at Gather & Harvest love their candles and they know that many of you do also. The candles came about from a little idea to create something that is not only lovely to use and look at, but also does good. A few years ago Lee and her hubby packed up their three kids and moved to Bali for two years. It was an awesome adventure and a fabulous experience for everyone. While they were living there Lee started to volunteer with a wonderful organisation called ‘Bali Street Mum's Project.’ Bali might look like a beautiful island full of happy and beautiful people, but there are many people who live away from the bright lights of Kuta and the swanky hotels of Seminyak and who are living in poverty. These people struggle to provide food for their families and a safe place to sleep at night. Bali Street Mum's Project provides

FALL LINES Time to Apply for Community Grants

T

he annual Alpine Shire Community Grants Program is now open, and community groups, clubs, Traditional Custodians and young people are encouraged to apply for funding to support their next project. Alpine Shire Mayor Sarah Nicholas said Council awarded a total of $77,000 to 22 important community projects in 2021/22. “From a Shingleback bike trailer for Team Mount Beauty, to the purchase of supplies to establish the Myrtleford Repair Cafe, these grants provide a boost to some fantastic community projects,” she said. “We strongly urge our local groups and young people to share their ideas and apply. This program funds community projects that support diversity, inclusion and community participation, and contribute to the building of healthy, strong, resilient, and connected communities.” Recipients from last year’s grant program

include the Myrtleford Bowls Club for the purchase of a bowling green mower and roller, Mount Beauty Neighbourhood Centre for funding to build secure private consulting rooms, the Bright Courthouse for a kitchen upgrade and the North East Victorian Hang Gliding Club for upgrades to the Mystic Launch toilet. The Community Grants Program will again be hosted by the SmartyGrants online grant management system. The SmartyGrants system is user-friendly for applicants and allows for efficient management of the grants process for Council. For information about the Community Grants program, or the eligibility of your project, contact Council 5755 0555. Applications close at 11.59pm on Thursday, 30 June 2022. Learn more and apply here: https://www.alpineshire.vic.gov.au/ community/grants-and-awards/communitygrants The annual Event Funding Program is also open - event organisers are encouraged to apply through this funding stream.

Local Support Upper Kiewa Valley Support Service (was Mount Beauty Emergency Relief/Anglicare Victoria). Mount Beauty Emergency Relief has been providing support and assistance to the community of the Upper Kiewa Valley for almost 20 years and since 2007 the Service has been auspiced by Anglicare Victoria. Mount Beauty Emergency Relief was very fortunate to have a funded part-time Coordinator up until 2014 when Commonwealth funding ceased. For the past eight years the Mount Beauty Welfare Committee has continued to provide a volunteer based service with funds donated by local Service Clubs and Churches, community members and community groups.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT It’s a five minute walk from my house to the pub. It’s a 35 minute walk from the pub to my house. The difference is staggering!

ROOMS AVAILABLE With the difficulty that we are all facing trying to find staff and their need for accommodation, Rocky Valley Bikes & Snow Sports have two rooms available in a four bedroom house (only three bedrooms will be let) if anyone is needing to provide staff with accommodation. This will hopefully allow businesses to advertise for staff, particularly during the busy winter period, allowing you to advertise far and wide, knowing that you have accommodation provided. Please let me know if you would like a room for your staff member. PS – Rocky Valley will not gain financially from any rent, the rent charged is just to cover costs. Contact Glenyse on 03 5754 1118.

POSITION VACANT We are looking for an enthusiastic person to join our casual / part time Reception staff. This will be for work mainly over the winter months but could lead to long term employment. The position will include work at both Falls Creek and Mount Beauty Medical Centres. Memorial Bursary - 2022 Congratulations to Alexander Cameron, Year 9 Student at Myrtleford P-12 on his outstanding application and interview for the Allan J Findlay Memorial Bursary for 2022. Alexander was presented with the winner’s cheque and certificate at a combined Lions Club and Rotary Club gathering on Tuesday 17th May. Allan J Findlay, known by many as Big Al, was well known for the support he gave to many organisations and individuals, his community connections, and for making a huge difference in the lives of so many.

In recognition and celebration of his life, the Allan J Findlay Memorial Bursary has been established by the Lions Club of Bright and the Rotary Club of Bright. The purpose of the annual Bursary is to assist young people in pursuing and achieving their goals, thereby being able to give back to their community. The hope is that this annual Bursary will not only remind us all of Allan, his extraordinary community spirit, but also of the continued need for others to engage with, and subsequently support their communities. The Lions and Rotary Clubs considered it to be appropriate to also provide Runner’s Up cheques and certificates, which have been awarded to Fox Williams (Bright P-12) and Maddison Pasqualotto (Marian College), both of whom presented excellent applications, interviewed extremely well, and are to be commended for their efforts. •
