Sponsored by the Mount Beauty and District Community Bank, the Mount Beauty Marathon has grown and evolved over the last 40 or so years to the point where it is now known as the Mount Beauty Community Bank Running Festival.
This, the 41st staging of the Running Festival will be based at the Les Peart Oval, next to the swimming pool, on Saturday 21st May. The Running Festival, originally called the Marathon then Half Marathon, was first run by a group of committed local runners in 1980.
The event is now run by the Kangaroo Hoppet (with the help of many locals and community groups) and will be the only

running event held in the local area this year.
Round One - Falls Creek
The National Gravity Enduro Series acts as the qualifying series for the Enduro World Series. See mention in the article with Ben McIlroy.
The event will include the normal 3km, and 10km courses. Entrants in the 3km do a lap of the lake with participants divided between competitively running and walking at a more social pace. The 10km course goes out to Damms Road and enjoys some gently undulating terrain. The 21km event up Mountain Creek Road has been discontinued – denying runners the beautiful views over the Kiewa Valley. This has eased the burden on the hard to find volunteers required to staff this part of the course.
Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August.
For the second time this year’s event includes a new trail run that has been designed by long-time local runner Bob Flower. Incorporating the iconic Survey Track the new 14km course has two river crossings (only shallow water!) and some great hilly terrain for the adventure minded. Trail running is a great way to stay active and be engaged with the great environment that surrounds us in the Kiewa Valley.

The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.
The event is generously supported by the Mt Beauty and District Community Bank and without their support the event

would struggle to survive. The organising committee has noted that organising events is becoming increasingly expensive and administratively burdensome and the support from local community organisations is critical to the long-term success of the event.
As with previous events there will be a lot of support from the Rotary Club of Mount Beauty, the Mount Beauty Men’s Shed and St Johns Ambulance.
Entries are cheap and online at www. alpinetiming.com.au or further information can be found at www.hoppet.com.au. Late entries will be accepted on the day in the Mount Beauty Swimming Pool foyer.
All ages and fitness levels are welcomed so please come and enjoy the running with us on Saturday 21st! …and don’t forget to vote!
And if you have a family member in the event, but are not running yourself, there is a lot to do and enjoy on the Les Peart Oval including the coffee cart and home-made goodies stall.
Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Cost is $50 per day or $90 for 2 days. Go to www.bluedirt. com.au to book. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig

Emergency Services and other community groups braved a cold morning to hold a winter safety and resilience demonstration on Saturday, 7 May at the Mount Beauty CFA Training Track.
Demonstrations were held throughout the morning, including the ever popular – and entertaining - Kevin Cosgriff from Parks Victoria using his mobile fire table to show how quickly bushfires can travel through the valley.
CFA members used the ‘Jaws of Life’ on a donated motor vehicle. This demonstration was a very intense procedure and many watching said they did not realise how arduous rescuing a person from a damaged vehicle can be. Mount Beauty Fire Brigade is one of the few rural brigades that have essential life-saving equipment including the ‘Jaws of Life’.
CFA Tawonga demonstrated how the water canon can project a wide range of sprays from the truck along with how the firefighters go into ‘self-preservation mode’ if they are overcome by bushfire.
Red Cross was also in attendance, talking to young children and families about how they should prepare to leave their homes in the event of an emergency. The children were encouraged to draw pictures on a pillowcase of items they would like to have with them to help keep them calm if they have to evacuate the valley.
SES reminded people that clearing gutters in winter is important to make sure houses don’t flood when it pours with rain.
The groups involved were CFA Mount Beauty (eight participants), CFA

Tawonga (three participants), Ambulance Victoria (three participants), SES (three participants), Parks Victoria (one very active participant), Red Cross ladies (five participants), Rotary (five participants), KCC (four participants), and Virginia Vinden-Price and Hilary Basile representing TREK (Totally Renewable Energy Kiewa).
Together they worked to present a day of preparedness, verbal and written information, demonstrations and calico bags full of information and giveaways to families who attended.
In spite of the cold and threat of rain, the event was well attended. Another positive outcome mentioned by several emergency service members was the opportunity to network. SES volunteer Rob Spargo said, “We don’t often get a chance to catch up or meet new people giving their time because when there is an emergency we concentrate on getting the job done.”
Event organisers - KCC (Keep Calm Committee) operating under the umbrella of the Mount Beauty Neighbourhood Centre - along with the emergency services who participated are keen to keep our community and valley prepared and resilient against potential future disasters. The day was made possible with funding from FRRR, BRV and local connections.
The smell of sausages and hamburgers wafted from the Rotary barbeque and lovely coffee and hot chocolate was supplied by Postman John from his mobile caravan (assisted by Vicki Burton).
KCC plans to hold another community gathering later in the year prior to the upcoming bushfire season. The date will be announced soon. •

This time last year we (the Christmas Tree committee) were plaguing the life out of the community about a Christmas Tree.
A thousand thanks were given to the thousand plus forms of support that we received. But we have never really given a satisfactory breakdown of just what our community did to make our fabulous Christmas Tree happen.
In terms of donations, the community and its service groups raised $8915.00 and that was huge!
In terms of visible, tangible and moral support… well that was immeasurable!
These elements of support together gave the committee enormous assistance in grant applications and we were successful in twoa Bushfire Victoria grant and a Community Grant from the Shire.
The Bushfire Grant Victoria awarded us with the exact cost of the Christmas Tree and it’s decorations. ($12,999.00). The Shire Community Grant awarded us $9330.00.
In all the committee spent $20,894.00. That was the whole lot… The tree; the fence; the decorations: insurance; transport; delivery; extra decorations; extra delivery; reindeer and every other little thing.
We actually ended up with too much money and a portion of the Community grant was repaid to the Shire. However, The Shire was more than helpful and generous and jumped around with incredible speed and support and provided us with a slab base and the power supply for the tree for now and the future.
After the repayment, we still had funds that allowed us to buy the reindeer and a second set of decorations for the future. Whatever the providing company does they cannot

stop the effects of our powerful sun and all decorations fade in a few years. Our other ongoing costs are insurance and storage. There were multitudinous individuals who ‘did’ things for us to assist with the success of the project.
The Bendigo Bank in all sorts of ways. Ron Crawford for the free use of his machine to put up the tree. Pierre Azemat (at the post Office) for lots of things. Campbell and Karen Ford (at the Hardware) for pegs for the reindeers. Bruce Addinsall for help with storage. Take Out Cafe. Elene Wood for the fantastic cake we raffled. Mardi Lucas for a fabulous raffle prize. Rick Cappellari for offering to help with storage if needed. James Taylor for a heap of organisational and construction help plus of course the team of construction helpers. Jenny Corser for endless assistance with the grant (make sure you have all of your little ducks in a row). Will Jeremy(Shire) for loads of help with Alpine Shire liaison and support.

TALK
Michael Buckley (Shire) for all that help with tree location under impossible time constraints. Adam Clarke (Shire) who made all of those constraints seem negligible and got the jobs done. Alex Gardiner for our coordination with street decoration and tree ‘putting up’. Who did I miss?
However, we should especially mention Trish at the Neighbourhood Centre. In the very beginning she agreed to auspice us and give us the opportunity to pursue this venture for the community. We are now our own legal entity with our own ABN.
We have funds to keep us going but will need to raise some money each year for insurance and storage. Stand by!
Our aim now is to purchase a different coloured set of decorations. All in good time and when the Community has recovered from last year’s onslaught!

If anybody is genuinely interested in the precise figures on any part of the Christmas Tree process you are very welcome to contact Sandra Eldridge (0407 250 129) to inspect the very simple accounts. •
Our intimate personal dinners for small group are proving to be a favourite with regulars and visitors. Please feel free to contact us and discuss your requirements and timing. Regards, Roi and Sue.
Recently Team Mount Beauty applied for and were successful recipients of a Black Summer Bushfire Recovery grant. The club has been awarded over $300,000 to complete a sealed pump track in the Mount Beauty Community Recreation Reserve. Pump Tracks are both playgrounds and training facilities for bikers, skateboarders or scooter riders of all skill levels. Asphalted tracks are hotspots for all kinds of riders who seek a fun and action-filled sports experience. Pump Tracks are highly popular destinations that become a hive of community activity. The sealed pump track will not only cater to the cycling community but to all skate park users and any other wheeled enthusiasts as well, meeting the needs of a greater demographic of visitor and community members and bringing a broader spectrum of the community together.
It is proposed that the expansion of our outdoor recreation facilities will add to our community health and wellbeing through increased access to outdoor activity for all abilities and ages. This project will provide access to an engaging, low cost recreation facility that will promote social connection and unique physical activity that is otherwise be inaccessible to most young people in our community.
The new pump track will add to the complement of existing bike facilities in Mount Beauty creating a premier cycling destination for all cycling tourists and their families, increasing visitation and improving economy for businesses in our town.
Team Mount Beauty will be partnered with the Alpine Shire in delivering this new asset on the disused end of the current BMX track. The pump track will cater to all user abilities and working with Alpine Shire Council, we also hope to improve the ease of maintenance of this council asset in the future.

Initial site preparation works will be underway in the coming months to allow earthworks to settle over the winter months.
During this time the project committee will be working through the planning and consultation phase with the trail building company that is the successful tenderer.

This paper has steered away from politics, has not uttered a word, for the last 42 years, But the current state of play and the insidious amount of media hype has forced a comment or two. It is very true that no local reader of this paper will be voting for Prime Minister Scott Morrison (Liberal – Division of Cook) or Opposition Leader, Anthony Albanese (Labor – Division of Grayndler). But it is easier for the National Media to focus on these two politicians instead of representing their clients (the voting public of this country) and talking about the individual candidates in each electorate. But that ain’t gonna happen. So how do we fix it? Instead of screaming at the Tele – or worse, switching to some third-rate movie every time Scomo or Albo come on, we actually get off the couch and see if we can’t find our local candidates and

have a chat with them. This would at least give us a good idea of who we are voting for and we could establish whether any or all of the candidates were worthy of our vote. Making the effort to meet our local candidates adds to your credibility and also gives the candidate a better idea of what the local community wants and/or needs – as opposed to what the party bosses (or the invisible spin doctors) reckon we want or need.
Focal lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016. On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.

Another sad aspect of politics is that they keep telling us ‘they will look after us!’ Political parties are trying to work their way into a position where we believe we could not possibly live without them. Bollocks – they can’t – and if you believe they can, then you’re as silly as them. But so many people believe them – that the government will look after us – that the government will do everything for us – have a look at the promises being thrown around at the moment – when in actual fact the government should simply spend the time doing the correct thing for the nation.

Ben: Yep, first overseas race, first EWS (Enduro World Series), so it’s going to be pretty exciting.
MR: Is it excitement or are you nervous?
Ben: I’m probably a bit more nervous than excited. Excited to race overseas, but nervous because it’s such a big event.
It has been a record year for visitation this summer and Resort Management would like to get your feedback on events, visitor demographic, mountain biking and general observations.
MR: Have you heard anything about the tracks over in Rotorua, NZ?
Ben: From what Chris (Panozzo) has said, they’re fast and there aren’t many rocks.
In our electorate, Indi, we have the following list of candidates
MR: How did you get into riding?
Ben: Pretty much because of my Dad,
Therefore you are invited to join the relevant Resort Management personnel and other members of the community for a summer season debrief meeting. This meeting will take place on Wednesday 26th April from 9:30am to around 11:30am in the Boardroom above Foodworks in QT.

when I was about 12 I started showing more interest in racing. I went to a few of the Victorian Enduro events but after a couple of years that series kind of fell apart. I then stared racing the national series. MR: How many national events have you raced?
1. Angel ALEKSOV (Animal Justice Party)
2. Helen HAINES (Independent)
3. Lachlan O'CONNELL (Derryn Hinch's Justice Party)
4. Stephen WILLIAMS (United Australia Party)
5. Beth STEVENS (Pauline Hanson's One Nation)
6. Benjamin GILBERT (The Australian Greens - Victoria)
Ben: My first national year in 2015. I raced three events, Toowoomba, Adelaide, and Canberra and placed 3rd overall for the series. In 2016 I raced the Bright, Perth and Adelaide National series events winning all three and the U19 series overall. I then went on to win U19 National Champs in Adelaide (with a time that would have knocked Troy Brosnan off the elite podium).
7. Liz FISHER (National Party of Australia - Victoria)
MR: How did you end up travelling and racing alongside Chris Panozzo (2 time Elite Gravity Enduro Australian champion)?
8. Nadia DAVID (Australian Labor Party - Victorian Branch)
9. Julian FIDGE (Liberal Democratic Party)

10. Ross LYMAN (Liberal Party of Australia - Victorian Division)
Ben: I first met Chris at a Victorian Enduro state round at Barjarg, I was still like Under 15s or Under 17s and I knew that he was a fast dude. I wanted to hang out with the fast guys so I wanted to hang out with Chris Panozzo. I remember at Barjarg the shuttles were always a bit delayed, we were hanging out down the bottom for so long that we nearly missed our race runs. When we got to the top, everyone was wondering where we’d been. He was just like “Ah we’ve just been chilling at the bottom.” So that felt pretty cool.

OK, the concept of meeting with every candidate is a pretty tall ask, but why not spend some time googling and learn a bit about each candidate so that we can make a more informed decision about who we think can best represent us as a community. And to my mind, if you’re a rusted-on Liberal or Labour voter it just means you can’t be bothered thinking. Not every party can be totally wrong or totally right – we just need to ensure we get the very best out of all of them. Do your bit and enjoy a snag on the day! Regards, Ed •
After that he invited me to travel with him to the next round at Narbethong. During that trip we decided not to race any more of the Vic series. I thought that I wouldn’t really continue racing but then Chris invited me to Toowoomba. That was my first national race and from then on we just became mates and he invited me along to all

The 2022 Mount Beauty Music Festival kicked off on Saturday 23rd of April at the Les Peart Oval. The festival featured a full line-up of live music on the truck stage, plus market stalls and food stalls. The LineDancing ladies got people up and in the mood, and taught them a few dance moves. It was great to see people bring the family down and spending the afternoon on the grass listening to music, catching up with friends, and enjoying a tasty bite and local brew.
Sunday was a full morning of 60 plus cars displayed on the oval, drivers had come from all over the north east to get their hands on a trophy. The Mount Beauty Car Club assisted us on the day with registrations. Judging was complete around midday - the categories were pre 1955, post 1955, Tow & Show, American Muscle, Australian Muscle and Bikes.
The truck stage was presented with Who's Got Talent where we had six entrants for our talent competition – and who spent the morning entertaining the crowd. MC Charlie Brown and Miss Mikaylia amused the audience, and encouraged and supported entrants with backing guitar and vocals.

Our dear friend and recently departed Bill Sutton spent a lot of his working life in the SEC – especially in Power Station Tours and the Information Centre. In this role he greatly assisted Dr Ruth Lawrence in the preparation of her thesis titled ‘The Interaction between the Land Use, the Environment and the Hydrology of the Bogong High Plains between 1850 and 1985.’ This is a fantastic record of the area and in appreciation, a hard bound copy was given to Bill to be kept for this community. It has been lent out and not returned and this notice will hopefully remind someone. Your editor has purchased a digital copy from the University of Melbourne for reference purposes but we would all like to see the original hardbound copy returned to the community.
