A TIME TO REMEMBER

ANZAC Day

The years flash by; the numbers of actual returned service personnel diminishes – and yet the respect increases. Fortunately conflicts of the scale of WW1 and WW11 have not re-occurred. New returned service personnel are now coming from the ranks of Vietnam Vets and those who have seen service in the Middle East. Numbers are being maintained by other service personnel and all are supported by the very appreciative public. Over the years, the numbers of spectator supporters that have turned up to show their appreciation has grown dramatically. This, to me, says that there remains a very strong – yet unspoken – feeling of gratitude and respect among the community and in

our quiet way, we just turn up and express our acknowledgement of our ‘diggers.’

ANZAC Day is the one of the few opportunities in the year where people can come together with a solemn and sincere purpose. It is a day that engenders pride and reinforces the gratefulness carried by the bulk of the nation. It is expected that this year will be no different.

Mount Beauty

Anzac Day Services are as follows. The Early Morning Service will take place in BiCentennial Park, Lakeside Avenue (beside the shire offices) beginning at 7am. A small informal service with a speaker from the local RSL. All welcome.

Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August. The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.

The Anzac Day March will come down Hollonds Street, starting from the assembly point in Park Street, near the Police Station at 10:45am, but marchers should be assembled and ready to go at 10:30am. Whilst Hollonds Street will not be closed, traffic movement will be restricted as the marchers come down the street.

The Commemorative Service will take place at the Cenotaph, beginning at 11am. The Motion of Loyalty will be offered by Councillor Tony Keeble of the Alpine Shire. Guest Speaker on the day will be a guest from, ADF, Bandiana.

The address for the day will be offered by students from the Mount Beauty Secondary College – further reinforcing the appreciation of our diggers shown by the young folk in the community. Speakers will be school captains. At our local service, wreaths will be laid by many community representatives and members of the public are invited to do so if they wish.

Further details on the service from Mr Bob Williams, President, Mount Beauty R&SL on 5754 1585, or 0427 784 499.

Following the service, everyone is invited to West Peak Hotel for a BBQ Lunch, refreshments and the traditional activities (read two-up), plus a couple of beers and a few old stories. •

Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Cost is $50 per day or $90 for 2 days. Go to www.bluedirt. com.au to book. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig

And We Mean a Challenge

With distances of 100 mile; 100 km; 60 km; 42 km; 25 km; 16 km and 10 km, and a vertical elevation for the 100 mile event of over 7000 metres, the term ‘Challenge’ is not an under-statement. At this stage we are looking at around 260 entrants.

The last couple of years have also been very challenging for the organisers, with a foot of snow a couple of days before the 2019 event, and bushfires restricting the course two years back. Then the last two events have been moved November to April to ensure they went ahead. This means that the 2022 event will actually be held November 26th to 28th. In order to enable more people to experience the magic of the Victorian Alps and savour the atmosphere of this unique event we have introduced a number of changes, adding in short course distances of 10/16/25 km, discontinuing the 36 km distance and replacing it with a new marathon distance taking in the best of the high plains whilst offering fantastic scenery on a challenging course.

The Alpine Challenge is without doubt the toughest, most challenging, most spectacular and rewarding all mountain trail runs in Australia—if not the southern hemisphere over seven distances. The 100 mile (160 km) course takes in six major climbs with 7,600 m of ascent and descent including Mt Feathertop, Mt Hotham, Mt McKay, Spion Kopje, Mt Nelse and Victoria’s highest mountain, Mt Bogong plus five river crossings. The 100 km involves over 4,000 m of ascent and descent and the 60 km course over 2,000 m of ascent and descent, whilst for those undertaking the 42 km run you will have over 900 m of ascent. The three short distances—10/16/25 km—offer an opportunity to experience great trail running and some of the historic huts on single tracks

THE ALPINE CHALLENGE

with great views over Heathy Spur and Rocky Valley Dam.

It also offers the most challenging weather conditions, from intense heat during the day or snowstorms and driving rain, to subzero temperatures at night.

Whilst the event organisers can take action to reduce risk to participants, they cannot eliminate it, as a result runners need to be prepared to run in all conditions or have the experience and sense to decide not to run at all on the day. Participants are advised to train for all conditions, including running in storms, snow and at night.

UKRAINE AND RUSSIA

Some Background Truth

In 2008, talking to George W Bush, Putin said, “You know, Ukraine is not a nation.” That is WRONG and I would like to set the record straight.

Kiev was founded in 482 as the capital of Kievan Rus. Moscow didn’t happen until 1147 in Muscovia or Muscovy – 665 years later.

In 988, Kyiv was the cultural and commercial centre of Eastern Europe. Moscow was still almost 200 years away from being. Over the next 600 years Kievan Rus was constantly invaded by the fierce Asian Hordes (the Mongols of Genghis Khan), the Tatars and the Turks. The capital shifted from Kyiv to Lviv. By the mid17th century, the Cossacks fully restored Ukraine’s old grandeur and Kiev once again became the centre of cultural and political life.

The first mention of the name ‘Ukraine’ is in the 1185 poem “The Tale of Igor’s Campaign against Polovtsy.” (That story was adapted by Alexander Borodin and performed as the opera “Prince Igor” in 1890.) 362 years later came the first mention of the name ‘Russia’ when Ivan the Terrible crowned himself Tzar and called his realm the Tzardom of Russia (in 1547). However, it wasn’t until 1721 that Peter 1 renamed Muscovia ‘Russia’ bringing all the tribes into the Russian empire - 536 years after Ukraine was named.

Holodomor (1933)–literally meaning hunger (holod) and death (mor) – was the famine (genocide) created by Joseph Stalin where over eight million people died of starvation. Six million were Ukrainians.

In 1929, Stalin ordered the collectivisation of farming. The kulaks, prosperous peasants, were forced to work on larger, supposedly more productive farms. Almost all the crops they produced would be given to the government at low prices to feed industrial workers. Most people didn’t want to leave their farms so teams of Communist agitators forced them off their land leaving behind their homes and personal property.

The resisting kulaks were jailed, deported to Siberia or shot.

The Ukrainian famine was made deadlier by a series of political decrees that were aimed only at Ukraine where resistance to collectivisation was greatest. The borders of the republic were sealed so the victims could not escape the famine. Villages were wiped out. To keep the mines and industries going, Stalin populated the empty villages with Russians – mostly along the eastern border - Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk. These are the areas Putin says belong to Russia.

In the spring of 1933, Malcolm Muggeridge, the Manchester Guardian’s Moscow correspondent, discovered the existence of widespread famine in the Soviet Union. Travelling secretly through Ukraine and the North Caucasus, formerly the USSR bread basket, he was appalled at the scenes of mass starvation and piles of dead bodies. His three reports – smuggled out in a diplomatic bag to evade censorship – were published anonymously on 25, 27 and 28 March 1933.

Putin turns 70 on Oct 7. He wants to leave a legacy – Ukraine being the missing piece. •

We have a wonderful Ukrainian community in this country and we are also now receiving refugees fleeing the bloodshed in Europe. Give what you can, when you can. Ed

ocal lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016. On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.

MR: Is this your first overseas race?

Ben: Yep, first overseas race, first EWS (Enduro World Series), so it’s going to be pretty exciting.

alls Creek Resort Management will be collecting hard waste on Wednesday 26th April - the day after ANZAC Day. Please see our Hard Waste Collection guidelines on the website, or if you require any additional information, please contact the FCRM Office on 03 5758 1200. • Summer Debrief

MR: Is it excitement or are you nervous?

Ben: I’m probably a bit more nervous than excited. Excited to race overseas, but nervous because it’s such a big event.

It has been a record year for visitation this summer and Resort Management would like to get your feedback on events, visitor demographic, mountain biking and general observations.

MR: Have you heard anything about the tracks over in Rotorua, NZ?

(with a time that would have knocked Troy Brosnan off the elite podium).

this grant to support those who also wish to follow their dream of a career in the arts spectrum.

Ben: From what Chris (Panozzo) has said, they’re fast and there aren’t many rocks.

MR: How did you get into riding?

As a young child, Susie had hoped to be a classical dancer but grew too tall. Her interest in the performing arts (particularly music and art) never waned, and it is for this reason that the Community Bank has instituted

Ben: Pretty much because of my Dad,

Therefore you are invited to join the relevant Resort Management personnel and other members of the community for a summer season debrief meeting. This meeting will take place on Wednesday 26th April from 9:30am to around 11:30am in the Boardroom above Foodworks in QT.

A Life to Remember

The company directors have great pleasure in announcing that the 2021 Creative Arts Grant has been awarded to Axel Mero. Axel has always dreamed of a career in classical dance, and has been offered a 12-month placing at the prestigious Royal Ballet School in London. We wish him well as he begins to fulfil his lifetime dream.

Ben: I first met Chris at a Victorian Enduro state round at Barjarg, I was still like Under 15s or Under 17s and I knew that he was a fast dude. I wanted to hang out with the fast guys so I wanted to hang out with Chris Panozzo. I remember at Barjarg the shuttles were always a bit delayed, we were hanging out down the bottom for so long that we nearly missed our race runs. When we got to the top, everyone was wondering where we’d been. He was just like “Ah we’ve just been chilling at the bottom.” So that felt pretty cool. After that he invited me to travel with him to the next round at Narbethong. During that trip we decided not to race any more of the Vic series. I thought that I wouldn’t really continue racing but then Chris invited me to Toowoomba. That was my first national race and from then on we just became mates and he invited me along to all

Good Friday Success

The fact that Easter fell in the middle of both Victorian and NSW school holidays meant that the town was pretty busy – a great feeling to be getting back to some degree of normality – with guests enjoying everything we have to offer.

Good Friday is also the traditional day that the state gets together and collects for the Royal Children’s Hospital. Our local Mount Beauty (Upper Kiewa Valley) Area Manager Chris Hollonds sadly passed away earlier this year – leaving a void. Fortunately, our manager at the local CBA picked up the reins and has taken over the role of managing the collection locally for the Royal Children’s Hospital.

The good news is that Meryn garnered lots of support with help coming from the Tawonga CFA, the Mount Beauty CFA, the

Tawonga South Newsagency & Post Office added $248 to the tally thanks to an Easter egg raffle that saw first prize - a Melba’s Chocolates 2kg Easter egg - go to a very deserving winner, Tom Gardiner, who spent Good Friday raising money with his family at The Park by selling raffle tickets for an Easter hamper. Runners-up prizes - 1kg chocolate Easter bunnies - went to Mary Jones, Gael Little and Judy Damm.

Overall it was a great effort with $11870 raised from this small community – and if my memory serves me correct, this figure is getting close to some of the record collections Chris was able to achieve.

Well done everyone and thanks very much. •

PUBLIC NOTICE

Our dear friend and recently departed Bill Sutton spent a lot of his working life in the SEC – especially in Power Station Tours and the Information Centre. In this role he greatly assisted Dr Ruth Lawrence in the preparation of her thesis titled ‘The Interaction between the Land Use, the Environment and the Hydrology of the Bogong High Plains between 1850 and 1985.’ This is a fantastic record of the area and in appreciation, a hard bound copy was given to Bill to be kept for this community. It has been lent out and not returned and this notice will hopefully remind someone. Your editor has purchased a digital copy from the University of Melbourne for reference purposes but we would all like to see the original hardbound copy returned to the community. Phone 0400 350 488 if you can help.

TRADE FAIR @ FALLS CREEK

Prepare for Winter

Even in these some-what uncertain times, the good news is that the Trade Fair @ Falls Creek will go ahead on Tuesday 3rd and Wednesday 4th May at St Falls Resort (formerly QT). Times are: Tuesday 3rd 9:30am – 5:30pm. Wednesday 4th 9:30am – 4pm.

The advent of the internet has changed the way many people do their shopping - much of it impulse buying. Oh sure, it opens up the suppliers’ market – giving many more people a look at the product – but does it really benefit the consumer?

Now that topic could become a good longwinded dinner party discussion over another glass or two – and the real solution may still not be discovered – or learned!

Internet shopping is convenient (even to the point where it could be making us lazy) –but one should be really savvy to make it work for us – as opposed to making money for the stores.

Making a bigger purchase – like purchasing your stock for a busy winter season –requires a fair bit of planning and research. Sure, we can use the internet to research, but then we need to see, feel, touch, smell and/ or taste the product. And if it is equipment we are buying it would probably be smart to enjoy a comprehensive demonstration.

Falls Creek has a well-deserved reputation as a ‘foodies’ mountain with quite a few excellent restaurants in the village and in the off-mountain town of Mount BeautyTawonga-Tawonga South. To continue to ‘grow’ this reputation, everything we do

needs to be a little bit of an improvement on last year –because if we don’t improve, then the others are going past us!

Then there is the presentation and cleanliness of the premises - from the entrance to the amenities. New guests are casting a discerning eye over everything as they cruise in – and if the joint doesn’t stack up, the rest of the visit is not going to be as easy.

And, of course price is a major consideration when buying stock, hardware, product or equipment. But, the old adage continues to ring true “You get what you pay for!” Buying quality product or produce ninety nine percent of the time means you will have less hassles and or hiccups – and as we all know, some of those hiccups come at the most inappropriate times.

The Trade Fair @ Falls Creek began as the Falls Creek Expo and Trade Fair back in 1982 with 15 exhibiting companies displaying their wares at the Frying Pan Inn. The recognition that the Trade Fair was a needed event saw it grow to 110 companies in a 1200 square metre Hoecker (tent) on the Gully car park in 1992.

Changes in management saw changes in the operation – to the point where it was moved away from Falls Creek and subsequently saw a decline in visitation. We are now back in Falls Creek and this year will see around 30 quality suppliers to the industry attending.

The Trade Fair @ Falls Creek takes place here in Falls Creek for your benefit. Your support would be appreciated. Dates are: Tuesday 3rd and Wednesday 4th of May. Further enquiries to: Mb 0400 350 488. •
