MOUNT BEAUTY VICTORIAN ENDURO Tour Wrap up

This is a taxing day on the bike, especially in Mount Beauty, which is renowned as being the toughest and most sought after event on the Enduro calendar.

T

his last weekend over 300 riders from all around Australia descended on Mount Beauty to compete in Round Two of the Victorian Gravity Enduro Tour. In Gravity Enduro racing riders are timed over six different descent stages and required to pedal back up to the top of each stage without any shuttle assistance. This sees the rider pedalling around 30kms over the day, climbing about 1000m of elevation, then sprinting the timed stage descents.

Team Mount Beauty would like to thank all those volunteers that assisted in the running of the event, shuttle drivers and coordinators, track marshals, track openers and sweep riders, track preparation workers, Rotary Club of Mount Beauty for managing the road crossing and car parking and Tawonga Red Cross for their help with the volunteer catering.

Finally thanks to all the club and committee members involved in the set up and pack down. It was a great event that our community can be proud off. • And I see some posts where competitors have gone to the trouble of thanking the Team Mount Beauty team for running such great events. These comments are greatly appreciated and help the volunteers keep their mojo for the next event. Ed

EASTER IN THE VALLEY Fabulous Autumn The leaves are starting to turn. The air is clear and sweet – with just a hint of coolness. And yes, we are on our way to another of our beautiful winters. But, we still have Easter, the annual Mount Beauty Music Festival and the rest of Autumn to enjoy – and so we shall! Knowledge is the key to your enjoyment, and if it ain’t in this paper, the answers will be at the Mount Beauty Visitor Information Centre, Bogong High Plains Road, Mount Beauty. Open 10am – 4pm daily, including Good Friday. Ph: 03 5755 0596.

Mount Beauty Art Group The Mount Beauty Art Group consists of over 30 members who meet every Thursday to create and socialise. This group is made up of a diverse range of 36 members who practice a variety of artistic skills including painting, drawing, mosaics, sculpting, collage and other various forms of art. Many of the artists are known in the community, with most living locally. Last year’s exhibition was a huge success (especially after the cancellation of the 2020 show). It is anticipated that this year’s show will be just as big with over 200 works on display for show and sale – all created locally by our talented team. And, with a considerable amount of effort and skill going in to each piece, the artist would love everyone to come along and take in all that is on display. Their work is enjoyable and to be appreciated. If you would like to show your appreciation, or simply enjoy some wonderful art, make a point of visiting the show at the Mount Beauty Community Centre, top end of Hollonds Street, each day of Easter, from 10am to 4pm. • Local Handmade Ethical Sustainable Creative That’s our shop – and our range of products is ideal for pampering yourself – or treating that special person! Then, towards the end of the month we have two special events for you to enjoy Candle-Making Workshop ~ Saturday 23rd April Your opportunity to test a selection of fragrances and essential oils – and the best part – make your own beautiful candle to take home! Maker’s Day Retreat ~ Saturday 30th April Taking inspiration from the autumn season, we are hosting a one-day retreat for makers, dreamers, doers and lovers of fine food. Further information on both of these events is featured in Fall Lines – elsewhere in this paper Regular Hours Monday to Friday: 10am – 4pm Saturdays: 10am – 2pm Easter: Closed Good Friday. Open Every other Day

Over 200 works from our talented group of local artists will be on display at the Easter Art Show in the Mount Beauty Community Centre.

Community Market On Easter Saturday morning until around 2pm, the Mount Beauty Community Market will be held around Kiewa Crescent and at the top end of Hollonds Street. This market features lots of locally made and grown produce, plants, wood raffles and lots more. For further information or to book a site, phone 0419 289 672. •

Pre-Loved Gear Sale Forgotten to pack your warm coat or need a hot water bottle whilst camping these holidays? Are you tired of drinking your wine from plastic picnic cups? Maybe an old pair of runners for the river would be just the thing to protect your feet. Then the Mount Beauty Op Shop is the place to go. Operated by a group of enthusiastic volunteers the Op Shop provides a great service to tourists and locals alike. Not everyone is aware that donated items from the community are diverted into several channels. The higher quality items appear on the racks and shelves for sale to the public at bargain prices, whilst the rest is sent onto other charities or businesses. In 2018 over a tonne of clean cotton items were sold to Jacks Rags, and this year we will beat that mark. This is a great recycling

service for items that are not saleable. We collect and distribute to disaster relief, animal refuge, family services, the homeless; and to local people who request help for worthy causes - a win, win situation! With the weather change we begin to think about all the great things we can do in the snow, and about checking our last year’s ski gear. The Op Shop has a massive Ski Clothing sale happening again this year beginning on Easter Saturday. We are selling good quality second hand jackets, pants, après boots, goggles, helmets, hats, gloves, mittens and incidentals for both adults and children. A few high quality items have marked prices, but most are under $20. This is a bargain sale not to be missed! Spread the word, and we’ll see you at the Op Shop in Hollonds Street on Easter Saturday from 9:30. •

Glorious Gliding The extensions and improvements to the airstrip have meant that gliding operations locally have been suspended. But, if you are interesting in gliding, contact Peter Deane 0418 591 351 or Bernie O'Donnell 0431 529 633. •

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK - Autumn 2022 Edition TWELVE

EV TAXI? Once Again, No Taxi

be covered. By having twelve drivers available, it is envisaged that a guaranteed taxi service is available seven days a week, say from 8am to 8pm each day. Out of hours fares would be at the discretion of the on-roster driver and be subject to a booking surcharge.

W

e could feel sorry for ourselves, maybe line up with our hands out to try and squeeze some of our money back from government to subsidise some sort of taxi service, or we could be innovative, nimble, and take matters into our own hands to provide a home-grown, co-op owned taxi service to meet the needs of locals and residents, visitors and business.

The vehicle proposed for this is an electric SUV. An EV! Why? EVs are the way of the future but they are here now. Operating and maintenance costs of an EV are usually less than one quarter of a petrol, gas or diesel powered vehicle. The EV can be plugged into any home 10 or 15 amp power point to keep it charged up. EVs are quiet and clean. An SUV type of vehicle has slightly higher seats than a standard car which makes getting in and out easier for those with mobility challenges, as well as more usable space in the back of the vehicle for shopping, walkers, wheel chairs, cases and parcels, etc.

Strange as it may seem, this situation of ‘no taxi’ presents the Upper Kiewa Valley community a great opportunity to provide, grow, and own this service, and be innovative at the same time. The Proposal: The proposal is for a syndicate of around six to twelve shareholders investing between $5,000 and $10,000 each to buy one suitable vehicle, equip and register it as a taxi (or commercial for hire vehicle), set up a structure to run the service, advertise the service and drive for and provide a local taxi service.

Six to twelve people with the funds, or access to a small personal loan, who are keen to become shareholders and be a driver is all we need to get this off the ground.

The shareholders would be people who are available to be on a flexible roster/on-call and to drive the taxi during its operating hours. The shareholders would also nominate an extra driver, or two to ensure shifts can always

One comment was to do with Uber coming in to town. That is fairly unlikely- for the same reason the previous cab did not succeed. Not enough fares for one person so sit around in one car – therefore the Uber concept is no threat to the above proposal. Ed.

FALL LINES Easter Reflections 2022 Suggested readings Isaiah Chapter 52: 13 to chapter 53: V12; Psalm 22; John 20: 1-18; Acts 10: 34-43 The Bible tells us that Jesus came into the world to save sinners and the Easter story is the culmination of His ministry of love and of His witness to God His Father as the source of true life. For many the idea that we are all sinners is hard to swallow, for they see that the majority of people are good, doing all they can to help and support their communities. And that is true. However, we tend to put sin and evil in the same basket, but evil is the end result of living apart from God. Jesus said that all the laws that guide our living can be summed up by two principles (commands); Love God, the creator and sustainer, above all else, and love all people as we love ourselves. When we fail at either of those; when we consider ourselves equal with God or not needing or acknowledging Him as part of who we are, or when we think and act like we are better or more important than any other person, we are

sinners. The significance of that is that any sin separates us from God who is eternal and so leaves us subject to death. God, who is the source of all love, has a problem with that. After He had formed the world and filled it with plants, animals, birds and fish. This left Him wanting others to enjoy it with Him, so He created mankind in His image, to be like Him and able to have fun together. To be like Him meant we needed to have freedom of choice and not be guided by instinct alone, which we took advantage of and messed up. That did not cancel His loving nature nor His hope of fellowship with us and all of history BC (Before Christ) was the lead up to that chance of reconciliation. If you have read the suggested passages, you will see that this was a painful, gutwrenching exercise where God himself took on human form in order that death, the consequence of our disobedience, could be cancelled out by His own sacrifice and death. The wonder of the storey is that death could not hold Him dead because He had no sin that it could hold onto, hence

He rose from death with the power to offer the same victory to all those who wants to be a part of that new life. I.e. anyone who wants to restore their relationship with God and therefore with life eternal can do it. Humbly accepting the sacrifice of Jesus Christ as the access back to God instead of our own efforts of goodness sounds simple, but it is all that is needed •

PUBLIC NOTICE Our dear friend and recently departed Bill Sutton spent a lot of his working life in the SEC – especially in Power Station Tours and the Information Centre. In this role he greatly assisted Dr Ruth Lawrence in the preparation of her thesis titled ‘The Interaction between the Land Use, the Environment and the Hydrology of the Bogong High Plains between 1850 and 1985.’ This is a fantastic record of the area and in appreciation, a hard bound copy was given to Bill to be kept for this community. It has been lent out and not returned and this notice will hopefully remind someone. Your editor has purchased a digital copy from the University of Melbourne for reference purposes but we would all like to see the original hardbound copy returned to the community. s a baby and as a little tacker, Chris Hollonds was a patient of the Royal Children’s Hospital and his treatment there gave home the knowledge and understanding of what people they all are - and what a brilliant job they do for children from the state and also from overseas. As a result, Chris spent much of his young adult life preparing for and assisting with the Annual Good Friday Appeal for the Royal Children’s Hospital in the local area. Sadly, Chris passed away earlier this yearwhich left a massive void in many heartsand also it began to look very much like this year’s Good Friday collection may not happen. Now the good news. We have it on very good authority that the collections will go ahead with local CFA team doing their usual collection in Mount Beauty. And, Meryn Deans, manager at out CBA, has taken over the reins as the Mount Beauty Area Manager for the Good Friday Appeal – and she needs some help. As we know Easter is about friends, family, Easter eggs, hot cross buns and lots of fun for the kids. But those kids in hospital – how can we show then our support.
