VICTORIAN ENDURO TOUR Round Two @ Mount Beauty

O

ver the weekend of April 2nd & 3rd Team Mount Beauty will again be hosting Round Two of the Victorian Enduro Tour. Mount Beauty’s steep, fast, hand cut single track is unlike anything else in Victoria and has proved to be a real drawcard. If you thought gravity racing was popular last year, this year’s event registration was next level, selling out with over 350 riders signed up in less than 15 minutes. In 2021 the Mount Beauty round saw world cup downhill racer Dean Lucas go head to head with good friend and Enduro World Series Rider Jack Moir. Dean took the win marginally over Jack.

T

he National Gravity Enduro Series acts as the qualifying series for the Enduro World Series. See mention in the article with Ben McIlroy. Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August. The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.

VICTORIAN ENDURO TOUR and should be a real power house. The event will be held over two days. On Saturday 2nd April riders will practise on the six race stages and are provided with shuttle lifts to the top of the mountain bike park. Sunday 3rd April is race day and riders will be pushing their limits to get the fastest descent time on the six race stages. As always Team Mount Beauty is well supported by local businesses, so riders and spectators alike can look forward to a terrific event atmosphere with coffee, catering and the CrankHandle Brewery bar on site on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Again this year, four of the six race stages will finish at the bottom of the mountain bike park near the Big Hill trail head facilities, providing an excellent opportunity for Sunday entertainment for spectators. The event will impact on a large area of the mountain bike park and although the park will remain open to the public, we ask that non competitors avoid riding on the race stages. If you’re in the area and keen to ride it may be a great opportunity to try one of the other fantastic mountain bike parks in the region, or alternatively, just come along as a spectator and enjoy the great event atmosphere.

Parking at Big Hill will be different to normal during the event, so please follow the parking signage and if possible walk or ride your bike to the event to minimise parking congestion. Visitors wanting to do the gorge walk would be best to park near the visitor information centre and take the track around the back of the AGL terminal station opposite the information centre. Team Mount Beauty would like to thank the following businesses for their support and contributions to the event prize pool. Events like this draw on a large volunteer workforce. If community members are available and interested in helping out as a volunteer over the weekend please get in touch via email: info@tmb.org.au. Half day or full day shifts to choose, coffee and food provided on the day as well as a thank you dinner at Stockpot after the event. •

PEAKS CHALLENGE Another Fabulous Event

The Peaks Challenge has become a staple of Falls Creek’s Summer events season, and 2022 once again delivered a sensational event. Over 1800 riders registered to take on the gruelling 235km of distance and 4000m plus of elevation gain, and were graced with perfect weather and perfect riding conditions. And the action at Falls Creek continued throughout the day with our annual ‘Junior Peaks’, which saw 50 young riders taking on the 5-kilometre course, and a new record time being smashed! Riders rose before the sun on a crisp but calm morning on Sunday 13th March for the thirteenth consecutive Peaks Challenge Falls Creek - the only Bicycle Network event that has not been postponed through the pandemic period. Gathering nervously behind the all-electric Porsche Taycan lead vehicle, thanks to the first ever lead car partner Porsche Cars Australia, excitement soon filled the air as the riders started to speed down the mountain from Falls Creek to Mount Beauty. Noticeably different from last year when supporters were encouraged to stay home for COVID safety reasons, this year the Falls Creek event village was buzzing with friends, family and supporters enjoying the sunshine and party atmosphere. Another first for this year was the fastest finisher prize money for each age group, with each of the following riders taking home $200 for their impressive efforts: 18-30 year age bracket: Female: Dione Wang. Male: Jack Aitken (overall fastest male finishing time of 7:13:39)

The speed at which riders were descending from the start was incredible to watch. The fastest rider, Jack Aitken left Falls Creek at 06:45am, was at the Blue Duck at exactly 12noon and was back in Falls Creek in 7:13:39. Pic – Ken Bell

31-40 year age bracket: Female: Hayley Gniel. Male: Rod Redpath. 41-50 year age bracket: Female: Emma Padovan (overall fastest female finishing time of 8:47:59). Male: Chris Ling. 51-59 year age bracket: Female: Bizzy Butterworth. Male: Michael O’Keeffe. 60 plus year age bracket: Female: Julie Cummings. Male: Des Cullen. The Bont Cycling King and Queen of Peaks Challenge, awarded to the fastest overall climbers on the day, were Jack Aitken and Emma Padovan. Falls Creek Events Supervisor, James Eggleston said “Congratulations to all the Peaks riders, both those who finished, and especially those who didn’t, for taking on this challenge, there were certainly some inspired on-lookers who at least thought about giving it a crack next year!

------------ POSITIONS VACANT -----------St. Falls Resort was inspired by several families’ love for the snow and their desire to offer fantastic mountain accommodation and great food at Australia’s premier familyfriendly ski resort. And a huge thank you and congratulations to all the people, businesses and stakeholders on the mountain who helped build, accommodate, park, feed, water, and clean up. It was fantastic to see so many people (upwards of 3,500!) back in Falls Creek for another huge summer event.” Bicycle Network General Manager of Events Caitlin Borchers said it was amazing to see so many people enjoy riding bikes together and thanked riders, supporters, family and friends for putting on a great show. "Riders are ready for trying conditions at Peaks Challenge, but this year Falls Creek really turned on the perfect weather for all of the riders and supporters to enjoy a return to full capacity bike riding events" said Ms Borchers. "A big thank you goes out to our alwaysamazing hosts at Falls Creek, as well as all of our event partners for helping pull off the most exciting Peaks in recent memory. "Bicycle Network would also like to extend a special thank you to nearly 150 volunteers stationed at the village and around the course, who dedicated their time to make sure the riders had the best day possible on the bike." •

LONGEST LUNCH Leaves a Lingering Taste

It was great to be able to deliver another renowned Falls Creek Longest Lunch on Friday the 18th of March, and it once again made for a fantastic dining experience by the picturesque Wallace’s Hut. Local legend Barry Iddles and his crew were once again the stars of the show, whipping up an incredible menu, with paired wines, for the 240 plus guests. Wandering down the 750metre track from the car park to Wallace’s Hut, the anticipation was growing. To arrive at the hut and see tables beautifully set, white table cloths, quality glassware, and large table centre – ready to cater for the 240 guests was extraordinary – with a backdrop of the oldest hut on the Bogong High Plains and surrounded by the resilient Australian Alpine bush – a fabulous site for a three course lunch and matching wines! The Longest Lunch has been something of an institution at Falls Creek, going back to some wonderful days on the balcony of the Falls Creek Country Club, then re-birthed to take in the splendour of the Bogong High Plains – whether at Pretty Valley, beside Rocky Valley Lake or around the iconic Wallace’s Hut. Unlike last year when a team of ten (and support crew), the Steve Lee Fightback team rode from Melbourne to Mt McKay to raise money for Steve, and then rode in to the Longest Lunch, this year was a bit more sedate.

A huge thank you must also go to the volunteer team of dedicated helpers/ waiters/picker-uppers from Mount Beauty, especially the students from Mount Beauty Secondary College, who were the heartbeat behind the event, managing everything, from the food being prepared to the plates being cleared, like seasoned professionals! It was great to be able to sit down with old

D

efying the underdog tag, the Mount Beauty United Cricket Club Under 12s came away with the ultimate prize in the Cricket Albury Wodonga Grand Final played at Baranduda on Friday night. However, after finishing 4th on the ladder at the end of the home-and-away season, Mount Beauty had defeated neither top placed Tallangatta nor second placed Baranduda and a premiership appeared a distant prospect indeed. The Power delivered when it mattered though, first defeating Tallangatta in the preliminary final by 40 runs, then turning it on in the Grand Final with a stunning 30 run victory over Baranduda. Coach Greg ‘Cowboy’ McLennan said it was a win five years in the making. “We started five years ago with two U12 teams and we had very young players in there. Some, like Evvy

LEARNING TO HELP YOURSELF While Helping Others

M

ost of us are awed by the readiness of people to help others affected by natural disasters such as fire or flood. On a daily basis we hear about community members in flood-affected areas in Queensland and NSW taking out their small boats, kayaks and canoes to help neighbours from their roof, rescuing stranded pets, or helping to clean their houses. It’s wonderful to see this generosity but it is probably true that most of these Good Samaritans are putting their own safety at risk because they have no training in this kind of rescue and helping-hand work. The Mount Beauty Neighbourhood Centre wants to ensure that if we experience a natural disaster in the Upper Kiewa Valley that at least some of the people who help their neighbours have the skills required to ensure their own safety. The Centre is holding three two-day work safe courses: Safe Chemical User; Whitecard and Chainsaw Management. These courses are all TAFE accredited. Completing the courses will mean not only that you will be able to help your community at times of natural disasters in greater safety, but also that you will get nationallyrecognised certificates to help you get a job.

The Safe Chemical User course deals with safe preparing and handling of chemicals and is required for a Victorian Agricultural Chemical Users Permit. It covers topics including determining the need for chemical use; preparing application/spray plan; preparing chemical mixes; calibrating application equipment; applying chemicals; cleaning equipment and completing records; transport and handling of chemicals and biological agents; and, safe storage of chemicals.

operation of chainsaws and Pole saws for basic cross-cutting. The two-day course provides skills in chainsaw operation and safe working practices for people with limited chainsaw experience.

This course will be held on Thursday, March 31 and Thursday, April 7 at the Centre from 9am – 5pm.

The dates for the Chainsaw Management Course is yet to be set.

The White Card Course deals with occupational health and safety issues (OHS) and is a mandatory certificate for anyone wishing to work in the building industry. Topics covered include: recognising and reporting construction hazards and risks; relaying OHS issues to other team members; understanding safety signs and symbols; understanding the basic principles of risk management; and, understanding emergency procedures. This course will be held on Thursday, April 21 at the Centre from 9.00am – 5.00pm. The Chainsaw Management Course is designed for people working in the basic

Skills covered include: chainsaw selection; personal protective equipment selection and use; safety procedures and guidelines; sharpening and maintaining chainsaws; site assessment, cross-cutting procedures; Pole saw operations; and trimming and felling trees.

Anyone interested in completing the course should contact the Mount Beauty Neighbourhood Centre by phone (03) 5754 1166, or in person. Some free places will be offered on application. •

PUBLIC NOTICE Our dear friend and recently departed Bill Sutton spent a lot of his working life in the SEC – especially in Power Station Tours and the Information Centre. In this role he greatly assisted Dr Ruth Lawrence in the preparation of her thesis titled ‘The Interaction between the Land Use, the Environment and the Hydrology of the Bogong High Plains between 1850 and 1985.’ This is a fantastic record of the area and in appreciation, a hard bound copy was given to Bill to be kept for this community. It has been lent out and not returned and this notice will hopefully remind someone. Your editor has purchased a digital copy from the University of Melbourne for reference purposes but we would all like to see the original hardbound copy returned to the community. Phone 0400 350 488 if you can help.

WHAT'S ON IN 2022

FALL LINES Mount Beauty Water Project A new community and key stakeholder reference group has been formed to advise North East Water (NEW) on site locations for critical new water infrastructure to be built in Mount Beauty. The reference group will focus on the Raw Water Offtake Project, and is made up of 13 community members and seven representatives from key agencies including the Alpine Shire. Managing Director, Jo Murdoch, said NEW had received a great response to the expressions of interest process with 24 community submissions. As a result, the number of community members has increased by three. “We have a fantastic cross-section of the community including residents, business representatives, community organisations and the town’s action group,” Ms Murdoch said. “Key agencies will also participate including Alpine Shire Council, Department of Health, Country Fire Authority, Goulburn Murray Water and the North East Catchment Management Authority. “The reference group will be independently facilitated by one of the country’s leading community engagement specialists and will meet at least four times over the coming months.

the reference group to be passed to our Board for a final location decision by mid-year.” “The community can keep up-to-date with the project by following the reference group’s progress online, or in person at our Friday information kiosks outside the Mount Beauty Community Centre between 10am and 2pm.” Project information is located on the Corporation’s website at: www.newater.com.au/ mtbeauty. •
