The inaugural FEASTIVAL Falls Creek took place over last weekend with a massive line-up of music, art, comedy and food that captivated all our visitors. After two years of unforeseeable adversity, Falls Creek Resort Management was overjoyed to have been able to welcome a large number of guests safely into the resort to share in a festival of fun and entertainment.
Over 1800 ticket holders attended Saturday’s Feast de Resistance – an evening of live music where Falls Creek’s Slalom Plaza was transformed into a welcoming FEASTIVAL of live music, street food and entertainment.

Audiences danced to Boy and Bear, local artists The Northern Folk, and Triple J’s Unearthed winner, Liv Cartledge, also joined by many more wonderful musicians throughout the afternoon. FEASTIVAL Falls Creek goers were also treated to tricks from the Flying Fruit Fly Circus, and outscienced by Dr Karl, and kids were kept crazy-busy with The Connected Circus creating a Kids Space in the plaza.
in the article with Ben McIlroy. Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August. The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.
A selection of bespoke bar and dining experiences were also part of the festivities. Guests laughed with comedians like Zoe Coombs Marr, Dave Thornton and Lloyd Langton at the Comedy Night in Frying Pan Inn and broadened their minds at the Art Exhibition. Astra Falls Creek provided a sumptuous four-course meal accompanied

by the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra’s sextet – a once-in-a-life-time musical experience for all who attended.
The Makers’ Markets provided visitors the opportunity to take home some creations from some of the regions talented makers, from jewellery to ceramics, natural skin care, and fine produce. Kids and grown-ups were calmed by free yoga and pilates sessions and were treated to the magic of the night sky with the Astronomic Society of Victoria. Stuart Smythe, CEO of Falls Creek Resort Management, said, “This weekend’s event, FEASTIVAL, has been a stunning success and a long overdue opportunity for the resort, its community and the local region to come together over music, art, comedy, science and food.
Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Cost is $50 per day or $90 for 2 days. Go to www.bluedirt. com.au to book. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig

“The resort was buzzing, with events for everyone and a phenomenal line up of acts across multiple venues in the resort, bringing much needed visitation back to the mountain and the region.
“We are grateful for the support of the Victorian and Commonwealth governments through the Alpine Business Support grant program to be able host such an event, in Australia’s premier Alpine Village.”
James Eggleston, Events Coordinator for Falls Creek Resort Management, said, “We were so excited to bring a brand-new event to Falls Creek and North East Victoria.
There have been a lot of parallels between the creative arts industry and the alpine resorts suffering from pandemic closures the past two years. We wanted to marry the two for a weekend of a variety of unique events in an incredible environment. It was fantastic to see it come together over the weekend.”
“We have an incredible team with some fantastic support from our local stakeholders, and we were able to pull together 13 different events across eight different venues as part of FEASTIVAL Falls Creek.”
“With one eye looking back to reflect and learn from our inaugural festival, the other eye is now looking forward to create and present an even bigger and better FEASTIVAL Falls Creek 2023.”

FEASTIVAL Falls Creek will be returning once again in 2023 – keep your diaries clear and we’ll see you in Falls Creek in summer 2023!
Comments received by this paper were also very positive with the general feeling being fabulous, a great vibe, thoroughly enjoyable and even better - “extremely well organised!” Well done team! •

An interesting time ahead for one of our oldest private ski clubs on the mountain.
March 22 and 23rd is the date set aside for Oldina Ski Club on Arlberg Street to welcome back to the mountain and the club quite a few foundation members from many locations around Australia. Not only from Victoria but SA, WA, NSW and Qld.
Back in 1962, after attending National Fitness Ski Schools at Bogong in the then old Kiewa Construction workers accommodation that Oldina was given permission to occupy two of the old Nissan huts which were duly converted by member work parties to be accommodation for consecutive seasons while negotiations and then construction followed of the Club building in Arlberg Street.
Three of the original members, Lee Saunders, Ross Middleton, and Vic Tewman travelled from Melbourne to the mountain to choose the block of land before lease negotiations were finalised with the mountain management. The location chosen was outstanding as it is opposite a moss bed which meant the view will never be obstructed and so negotiations began with the mountain management, Government (for support) and the chosen bank.
Very soon after a builder was commissioned, member work parties saw the construction come to fruition. Young school teachers, students, engineers, lawyers all worked hard to achieve the construction over one summer season.

That was 60 years ago and after two refurbishments and one extension (2nd storey addition), foundation members are gathering to meet up again to celebrate the success of a hard working totally volunteer managed club lodge.

One of the original members now boasts three generations as members.
A second Club location was purchased many years ago and whilst not as big as the Falls Creek Lodge it does offer an alternate skiing experience at Mount Buller.
Even after three taxing seasons because of Covid, the Club has continued to thrive under the current management committee who press hard for members to use the facilities during the summer season to experience all that Fall Creek now offers during the warmer months.
Oldina proves that a Ski Club can succeed as long as there is a team to lead and set a successful direction.

MTB de femme 2022 is fast approaching and we couldn’t be more excited. Over 70 females have already booked tickets for the weekend at Falls Creek from Friday, 4thSunday, 6th March.
Tickets are available until midnight Monday, 28th February so there is still time to book. They vary from a social ride, Saturday all day pass or an all-inclusive weekend pass and cost from $15 - $300 per person.
We have a group of local mountain bikers who will lead groups of riders depending on their riding ability, anywhere from someone who hasn’t ridden a mountain bike on mountain bike trails all the way through to the advanced rider who likes the technical drops and terrain.
Participants can also add a skills clinic to really improve on their technique. Indi Boer from Fastline Bikademy and her team will be hosting the sessions and you won’t be disappointed.
We also have the crew from Cycle Station in Albury heading up for the weekend. They will be available to check over your bike at the Friday evening registration, help you with any mechanical issues during the day and educating us all at the Bike Workshop on Saturday afternoon.
Blue Dirt will be operating the shuttles and hosting a Cocktail Happy Hour at the Bike Hub from 4pm. Believe me, you won’t want to miss the Espresso Martini made by Aaron.
Ema from Mobile Osteopathy will have a pop up clinic to assess, treat and provide rehab suggestions for any and all body niggles.
Jules from Ski Fit Yoga will lead participants through a yoga session on Saturday evening and Sunday morning to keep us moving.
On Sunday, there is a picnic ride to Edmondson’s Hut in the National Park where riders will enjoy a light lunch immersed in nature before the ride back to the resort. It will be a weekend of riding to remember.

All registered riders will get a goodie bag and there will be spot prizes from event partners Dharco and Krush given away on the Saturday evening dinner at The Frying Pan from 7pm.

LCrews from Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) will work alongside the Country Fire Authority (CFA) to carry out a planned burning program over the next few months. These planned burns will help to reduce flammable vegetation, which reduces the risk of a bushfire.
FThe burns planned to be delivered around Mount Beauty and Tawonga are shown on the map below. The Ovens district planned burning program from includes the Coral Bank – Junction Creek (1386 hectares) and Mount Beauty – Mount Emu burn in the Kiewa valley (2,728 hectares) and over the ridge are the Kancoona South – Gluepot track west (2590 hectares) and Tawonga German creek (818 hectares). Over the last two years he has progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016. Ben: Yep, first overseas race, first EWS (Enduro World Series), so it’s going to be pretty exciting.
MR: Is it excitement or are you nervous?
Ben: I’m probably a bit more nervous than excited. Excited to race overseas, but nervous because it’s such a big event.
It has been a record year for visitation this summer and Resort Management would like to get your feedback on events, visitor demographic, mountain biking and general observations.

state round at Barjarg, I was still like Under 15s or Under 17s and I knew that he was a fast dude. I wanted to hang out with the fast guys so I wanted to hang out with Chris Panozzo. I remember at Barjarg the shuttles were always a bit delayed, we were hanging out down the bottom for so long that we nearly missed our race runs. When we got to the top, everyone was wondering where we’d been. He was just like “Ah we’ve just been chilling at the bottom.” So that felt pretty cool.
After that he invited me to travel with him to the next round at Narbethong. During that trip we decided not to race any more of the Vic series. I thought that I wouldn’t really continue racing but then Chris invited me to Toowoomba. That was my first national race and from then on we just became mates and he invited me along to all

After growing up in Strathmore Melbourne and travelling overseas for seven years Peter first came to Falls Creek with his younger brother Andrew in the late 60's and met Ros who was working at Cummings Ski Hire at the time. They started dating and were regular weekenders at Falls for a few years, still working in Melbourne.
They got married in 1972 and went to Falls Creek to go into partnership with Ros's twin sister Lee and Barry Lawther to own and operate The Man for the next three years. Peter's roll was everything from Chef to Barman to Cleaner to DJ.
In 1975 they decided to move down to Mount Beauty and Peter used his building skills to renovate an old plumbers shed on the KVH and add a little unit on the side to live - Ski Plus was born. They owned and operated Skiplus for the next 29 years until they sold to the King Family and Partners in 2004, who still run it today. Peter employed many of the locals and gave them their first jobs as young kids.
A few years later Peter purchased the block of land next to the ski hire and built the Snowgum Motel, consisting of 12 rooms, swimming pool and a 4BR family home, very modern for its time. They owned and operated the two businesses until selling the motel to Joy and Peter Partington.
It's great to see his legacies such as Ski Plus and Snowgum Motel still standing and trading today.
Peter was infamous for his legendary card nights on the hill with Luigi (AKA Rob Harwood), Lucky (John) Searles , JBL ( Barry Lawther ) and co.
He also did a lot of building and renovations on Lodges and establishments like Les Chalet (where he fell a few stories with Yogi Moegel and survived with some minor injuries), The Man, re-roofing Mount Beauty hospital, (where he again fell off)!
He also completed two Mount Beauty Marathons, and was an avid Golfer and Punter, horse racing in particular. Peter went sky diving over the mountains for his 70th birthday landing at Mount Beauty airport.

Peter and Ros had three sons: Mark, Andrew & Tim that were all born in Mount Beauty hospital and went to school there before eventually moving into Albury in the early 90's and just doing the winters running the Ski Hire.
Pete was a legend of Falls Creek/ Mt Beauty and such a character who will be remembered for his booming laugh and warm smile.
He battled with cancerous brain tumours the last 15 months, and survived a major heart attack in Oct 2021. He passed away in Albury hospital 4th Feb. He will be missed! •
