From an Ultraman event world record holder (who also happens to be a grandmother) to a young glider pilot with the world at his feet, some remarkable community members were celebrated in local ceremonies around the Shire on Australia Day.
The annual Australia Day Community Awards recognise individuals, young people, events and community groups who have excelled, risen above adversity and given back to their community over the past year.
Alpine Shire Mayor and award judging panel member Sarah Nicholas congratulated all nominees, and said there was some stiff competition for the ultimate winners of each award.

Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Richard – or Dick to his friends – has been described as a ‘jack of all trades’ with a heart of gold who is always willing to lend a hand. Dick first came to the Kiewa Valley to work for the SEC and decided to stay once he retired. In the years since, Dick has become a mainstay for local community groups volunteering his time as a committee member and sharing his practical skills to help out with general handyman jobs such as maintenance and repairs. Dick assists with the organisation of events such as the RSL’s Anzac Day service and the Hospital Op Shop’s Easter Fete, he washes dishes at the Neighbourhood Centre, performs as a percussionist with the Mount Beauty and District Community Band and even hosts a show on Alpine Community Radio. Dick spent many years as leader of the Mount Beauty Scouts, and the last 10 years as the president of the Mount Beauty and District
Men’s Shed. Dick’s work as the Welfare Officer with the Men’s Shed and other volunteer work as a community carer is also commendable, with many noting his kindness, tact and diplomacy in dealing with our more vulnerable community members and their families.
At just 18 yeas of age, Noah has already demonstrated a keen sense of civic duty and commitment to serving his community. Noah has recently completed his training to become an operational firefighter with the Mount Beauty CFA and was also the youngest volunteer firefighter to join the brigade two years ago. Despite his age, Noah has proven himself to be a very skilled and highly valued member of the team, with reliability, enthusiasm, persistence and patience all used to describe his contribution. In addition to regular training and equipment maintenance, Noah has volunteered his time to assist with the brigade’s community activities including the Colour Fun Run, Santa Lolly Runs and the Good Friday Appeal.
Queensland to undertake further training with Flightscope Aviation. Noah will begin his new career in the Australian Air Force where he can pursue his passion for all things aviation later this year.
Outside of the CFA, Noah volunteers for many community events including the Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser and marshalling for mountain bike events in Mount Beauty and Falls Creek. Noah also has a passion for flying and is an avid glider pilot. Having held his glider licence for more than four years, Noah recently received the Kieran Brown Flying Scholarship which enabled him to travel to

Horse racing is something a little more than a past-time in Australia. It involves business, owners, jockeys, grounds staff, bookies, lots and lots of punters. Almost every town has a track and at least once a year, there is a race meeting. The big city meetings are popular (like the Cup), but some-what overwhelming. That’s why a country Picnic Race Day is so appealing.
Our local and fabulously popular Dederang Picnic Race Day was traditionally held on the first Saturday in January, but extreme temperatures put the kibosh on that – and now this year's Mount Beauty & District Community Bank Dederang Races will take place on Saturday 26th February 2022 – just over a fortnight from when this edition hits the streets.
This undiscovered gem of Victoria’s alpine region, Dederang boasts a local pub affectionately known as ‘The Ranga’ as well as a General Store (with great coffee and home-made treats), golf course and bowling
green, football and cricket ground, tennis courts, primary school and the all-important race track. For this one weekend in February, the population swells to the thousands as many come from far and wide to join in the festivities of the biggest local event of the year.

'Snakes Awake' is a story told by a young heroine named Pip, who loves to walk in the bush in summer with her mum, and most of all enjoys seeing snakes. She informs readers how to be safe in 'snake country' and how lucky they are if they encounter snakes in the bush or a backyard. It also includes a fact guide of safe bushwalking and first aid for snake bite.
The story aims to empower readers to keep getting outdoors and enjoy what the Australian bush has to offer year round.
The other aspect of this book is the amazing illustrations, created by Shannon Boland, a talented lady who grew up and schooled in Mount Beauty and now lives in Melbourne. Shannon shares Jarrod's love for nature and snakes and the conservation of all our native wildlife and places.

The Corporation needs to build a new raw water off-take to replace an ageing pipeline that is located in a hazardous area, at risk of bushfires and rockslides.
New Managing Director Jo Murdoch said she was open to discussing all options with the community ahead of a final decision on the location being made around the middle of 2022.
She said a new independently facilitated ‘community and key agency reference group’ would be established to provide advice to NEW about the location of the new water infrastructure.

MR: Have you heard anything about the tracks over in Rotorua, NZ?
Ben: My first national year in 2015. I raced three events, Toowoomba, Adelaide, and Canberra and placed 3rd overall for the series. In 2016 I raced the Bright, Perth and Adelaide National series events winning all three and the U19 series overall. I then went on to win U19 National Champs in Adelaide (with a time that would have knocked Troy Brosnan off the elite podium).

Ben: I first met Chris at a Victorian Enduro state round at Barjarg, I was still like Under 15s or Under 17s and I knew that he was a fast dude. I wanted to hang out with the fast guys so I wanted to hang out with Chris Panozzo. I remember at Barjarg the shuttles were always a bit delayed, we were hanging out down the bottom for so long that we nearly missed our race runs. When we got to the top, everyone was wondering where we’d been. He was just like “Ah we’ve just been chilling at the bottom.” So that felt pretty cool.

After that he invited me to travel with him to the next round at Narbethong. During that trip we decided not to race any more of the Vic series. I thought that I wouldn’t really continue racing but then Chris invited me to Toowoomba. That was my first national race and from then on we just became mates and he invited me along to all

Our dear friend and recently departed Bill Sutton spent a lot of his working life in the SEC – especially in Power Station Tours and the Information Centre. In this role he greatly assisted Dr Ruth Lawrence in the preparation of her thesis titled ‘The Interaction between the Land Use, the Environment and the Hydrology of the Bogong High Plains between 1850 and 1985.’ This is a fantastic record of the area and in appreciation, a hard bound copy was given to Bill to be kept for this community. It has been lent out and not returned and this notice will hopefully remind someone. Your editor has purchased a digital copy from the University of Melbourne for reference purposes but we would all like to see the original hardbound copy returned to the community. As a visual artist based in Chiltern, Kirrily Anderson has a great love of the outdoors and her recent Artist in Residence program at Falls Creek (summer 20-21) has fostered her passion for the high plains and everything there-in.
Back in August 2021 Kirrily answered a brief and put together a design for a mural to be installed on the wall in the Falls Creek Child Care Centre outdoor play area/ garden.
The design incorporates 20 species of flora & fauna and natural features of the Alpine area surrounding Falls Creek, and also represents the four seasons.
Elements included are: In Summer: Mountain Daisy; Chameleon Grasshopper; Silky Snow Daisy; Alpine She-oak Skink; Billy Buttons and the Mountain Katydid.
In Autumn: Jack Jumper Ants: Fern Tree; Wombat; Alpine Ash and Bracken.
Winter features: Broad-toothed Rat; Bogong Sally and Tussock Grass. Spring comes alive with: Alpine Marsh Marigold; Little Ravens; Mountain Pygmy Possum; Bogong Moth; various Lichen and the Mountain Plum Pine (male with cones).
The mural also features an Interactive Temperature Gauge. The Chameleon Grasshopper uniquely changes colour with the temperature. Below 10°C, they’re at their darkest colour, but as the mercury rises, the black starts to fade, and they take on a progressively brighter turquoise.
This concept involves a ply grasshopper in the turquoise colour which can be hung over the top of the black grasshopper (via small hooks) by the children when the temperature reaches a certain point (e.g. 15 degrees). A thermometer will sit on the adjacent fence as a guide.
Another little ‘extra’ is the ‘Blackboard’ area in the shape of a boulder where children can be encouraged to draw some of what they see in their natural environment.
The mural was completed towards the end of January, just in time for the busy return to school and day care after the holidays.
