AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS Celebrating our Community

T

he Alpine Shire Australia Day Community Awards are presented each year to local community members, young people and community events who have helped strengthen and enrich their community over the past year. There will be changes to some of the traditional Australia Day events this year, but the spirit of the day remains the same. Alpine Shire Mayor Sarah Nicholas said that while the usual Australia Day barbecue breakfast will not be part of the celebrations in Myrtleford or Mount Beauty this year, there will still be a ceremony honouring this year’s award recipients. “Now, more than ever, it’s important to recognise the generosity, commitment and talent of our community members,” she said. “It’s been a difficult few years, and so far 2022 is shaping up with its own challenges - but I continue to see our communities pulling together, supporting each other, being COVID safe and choosing kindness in even the hardest of times.” Residents and visitors are invited to join in Australia Day celebrations being held across the Alpine Shire on Wednesday, 26 January 2022, remaining mindful of COVID-safe behaviours. The traditional free barbecue breakfast, run by local service club volunteers, will be hosted in Bright and Mudgegonga. The Harrietville Historical Society will host their usual ceremony morning tea. Clubs in Mount Beauty and Myrtleford have this year opted not to run the barbecue in light of the current local COVID-19 outbreak.

• Open 7 Days • From 5pm.

Councillor Tony Keeble with last year’s recipient of the Citizen of the Year, Barb Talbot, recognising her great work with the Kiewa Valley Nursing Home Op Shop. Pic – Ken Bell

Cr Nicholas encouraged the community to still come along to the ceremonies to recognise their local Community Award recipients and nominees.

The celebrations are subject to change in the event of a worsening outbreak or new Victorian Government directives with little notice. Any changes will be communicated on Council’s Facebook page and website.

“We respect the clubs’ decision to put the safety of their members first,” she said. “Why not pack a breakfast picnic or grab a takeaway coffee and brekkie from a local business and come along to support your community nominees?”

MOUNT BEAUTY: Venue: Hydro Park, Lakeside Avenue. 9:30am. Official ceremony including presentation of Alpine Shire Australia Day Community Awards. •

All events will be held according to the Victorian Government’s COVIDSafe guidelines.

AVE ATQUE VALE Hans Fisher

for the wonderful resort we all enjoy today.

ne of the great privileges I have had is to be asked to write a homage to Hans Fisher. Hans passed away on 18th January, 2022, at his second most loved place in Australia, Noosa Heads, Queensland.

Although it is demanding to name names, allow me the indulgence to mention some of these frontier people Tony & Skippy St Elmo, Bob Hyman, Julian Brown, Ore Frueauf, Ces Dobson, Marnie Searles, the Spargos, Ken Bell, Baldie Blackwell, Bill Bridgeford, Lorna Dunkley, Geoff Henke, Brad Spalding, Gebi Auderer, Georg Pirmoser, Zigi Haberzetle, … and also from Innsbruck, Austria, Hans Fisher. Hans stands tall amongst this ensemble. The physical properties of any particular place is one thing, but it is the people who give life, and import meaning and purpose to others, and, to all the millions who have since skied and played at Falls Creek.

O

People are all too often described as ‘legends,’ but to characterise Hans as a ‘legend’ gives true meaning to the word. Whether you say that he was ‘Falls Creek,’ or that Falls Creek was ‘Hans’ - both are the honest truth. In those days of Falls Creek from the early 1960s, there were a few pioneers who put the mountain on the map. Whether we had a belief in the future, or if it was just a sense of adventure, a camaraderie and a solidarity developed that was to lay the foundations

Hans came to Falls Creek in the early 1960s, working on the slopes in summer and in winter, including building access bridges over the race-line (see photo?). In 1965 he started as the chef for me at Koki Alpine Lodge (“I’m not a

‘chef ’, just a “bloody good cook”, he would say), and his Vienna Schnitzel, Hungarian Goulash, and Pork Kastler, certainly attracted long food queues. And Hans was not just a “cook”.

AVE ATQUE VALE

This photo by Nick Ivanco, shows Hans on the company snowmobile ‘getting a little air!’ in the late 70’s. It is rumoured that when the boss finally saw the shot, the word ‘dismissal’ was being bandied around!

Dear friends for many years Hans Fisher and Marnie Searles – taken at one of those fabulous gatherings in Melbourne. Pic – Courtesy Marnie Searles

He certainly ruled the roost in the ‘entertainment’ department at Falls Creek… with the biggest smile one could imagine... a ‘few drinks’ being ‘just the start’.

Hans' life exploits built every day, he truly left a legacy, and now we have the delight, and dare I say, pride, in always being able to reflect on the memories he gave to us all.

His service to many, and caring for others was his trademark… he simply never let anyone down. His burly physique and strength, belied the generous and sensitive heart that lay deep inside. As an unrestrained poker player, he was just too honest to hit the big ‘bluff’, which is a metaphor for his personality. A (not so good) singer, but the notorious “Dina, Dina, show us your leg, a yard above your knee” was always a first request! And, what a skier! - 215cm ‘Kneissel White Stars’ with long-thong boot bindings - even the Austrian ski instructors got out of his way.

From the mid 1970s, Hans had well and truly completed his apprenticeship, and gave all he could to everything he undertook - ‘cooking’ at various Falls Creek eating houses, lift company and slope maintenance, cellar man at the Noosa Pub and Surf Club. Forever honest and loyal to his friends, he was best companion and confidante to two lovely girlfriends (at different times!), Lyn at Falls Creek, and Chrissy at Noosa, the latter who I spoke with today, told me of her enduring love for Hans.

George Shirling, FALLS CREEK. Mb: 0412 640 300.

“It was people like Hans who MADE Falls Creek what it is today.” There is so much more to Growler’s contribution to Falls Creek and this paper is happy to run some of those wonderful tales if you would like to Email them to me.

It might be taking your children for a swim in summer when it’s 40 degrees, it might be the nice (flat) walk with your dog from the sway bridge along the river trail or jumping in at the spill way and floating past the caravan park all the way down to pebble beach. Let the representatives and decision makers know what the river and the swimming area mean to you, and how the building of this weir and pumping shed will impact your interaction with the West Kiewa now and into the future. The two most important actions that can be taken are making phone calls to register your concerns to the offices of: Tim McCurdy, Member for the Ovens Valley, 03 5721 6155. Lisa Neville, Victorian Water Minister 03 9637 9654.

ocal lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016. On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world. MR: Is this your first overseas race? Ben: Yep, first overseas race, first EWS (Enduro World Series), so it’s going to be pretty exciting. MR: Is it excitement or are you nervous? Ben: I’m probably a bit more nervous than excited. Excited to race overseas, but nervous because it’s such a big event. MR: Have you heard anything about the over in ofRotorua, NZ? Atracks rtist impression the proposed site based on limited information and North East Water engineering Ben: From what Chris (Panozzo) has said, drawings. when I was about 12 I started showing more interest in racing. I went to a few of the Victorian Enduro events but after a couple of years that series kind of fell apart. I then stared racing the national series. MR: How many national events have you raced? Ben: My first national year in 2015. I raced three events, Toowoomba, Adelaide, and Canberra and placed 3rd overall for the series. In 2016 I raced the Bright, Perth and Adelaide National series events winning all three and the U19 series overall. I then went on to win U19 National Champs in Adelaide (with a time that would have knocked Troy Brosnan off the elite podium). MR: How did you end up travelling and racing alongside Chris Panozzo (2 time Elite Gravity Enduro Australian champion)? Ben: I first met Chris at a Victorian Enduro state round at Barjarg, I was still like Under 15s or Under 17s and I knew that he was a fast dude. I wanted to hang out with the fast guys so I wanted to hang out with Chris Panozzo.
