The good news is: Events are back, and while there might be some restrictions in place in various areas, in the main, events are back and there are lots to enjoy, witness, compete in and photograph.
The first events of 2022 are coming to Falls Creek this weekend, with Round Six and Round Seven of the Victorian Mountain Bike Championship Series returning this Saturday and Sunday. Saturday the 22nd of January will see keen riders take on the trails of Falls Creek in a classic, Olympic-style, first across the line, Cross Country race.

Victorian Downhill Series
Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August. The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.
Entries have been capped at 300 for the next round of the Victorian Downhill Series to be hosted by Team Mount Beauty at the Big Hill Mountain Bike Park on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th January. •

After a two-year hiatus due to the dreaded you know what, MTB de femme is returning to Falls Creek in 2022. Put these dates in your diary: Friday 4th March to Sunday 6th March – the weekend before Peaks Challenge.
The ethos of the event is based on getting women riding the trails at Falls Creek in a friendly and safe environment. Better still, the original event founder Jo Prothero will be running the event.
MTB de Femme is all about getting out on the bike, having a laugh, learning a few new skills, and connecting with like-minded women - with coffee, lunch and champagne added to the mix!

Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig

The Alpine Shire Australia Day Community Awards are presented each year to local community members, young people and community events who have helped strengthen and enrich their community over the past year. There will be changes to some of the traditional Australia Day events this year, but the spirit of the day remains the same.
Alpine Shire Mayor Sarah Nicholas said that while the usual Australia Day barbecue breakfast will not be part of the celebrations in Myrtleford or Mount Beauty this year, there will still be a ceremony honouring this year’s award recipients.
“Now, more than ever, it’s important to recognise the generosity, commitment and talent of our community members,” she said.
“It’s been a difficult few years, and so far 2022 is shaping up with its own challenges - but I continue to see our communities pulling together, supporting each other, being COVID safe and choosing kindness in even the hardest of times.”
Residents and visitors are invited to join in Australia Day celebrations being held across the Alpine Shire on Wednesday, 26 January 2022, remaining mindful of COVID-safe behaviours.
The traditional free barbecue breakfast, run by local service club volunteers, will be hosted in Bright and Mudgegonga. The Harrietville Historical Society will host their usual ceremony morning tea.
Clubs in Mount Beauty and Myrtleford have this year opted not to run the barbecue in light of the current local COVID-19 outbreak.
Cr Nicholas encouraged the community to still come along to the ceremonies to recognise their local Community Award recipients and nominees.
“We respect the clubs’ decision to put the safety of their members first,” she said.
“Why not pack a breakfast picnic or grab a takeaway coffee and brekkie from a local business and come along to support your community nominees?”
All events will be held according to the Victorian Government’s COVIDSafe guidelines.
The celebrations are subject to change in the event of a worsening outbreak or new Victorian Government directives with little notice. Any changes will be communicated on Council’s Facebook page and website.

Hans Fisher
One of the great privileges I have had is to be asked to write a homage to Hans Fisher. Hans passed away on 18th January, 2022, at his second most loved place in Australia, Noosa Heads, Queensland.
People are all too often described as ‘legends,’ but to characterise Hans as a ‘legend’ gives true meaning to the word. Whether you say that he was ‘Falls Creek,’ or that Falls Creek was ‘Hans’ - both are the honest truth.
In those days of Falls Creek from the early 1960s, there were a few pioneers who put the mountain on the map. Whether we had a belief in the future, or if it was just a sense of adventure, a camaraderie and a solidarity developed that was to lay the foundations
for the wonderful resort we all enjoy today.
Although it is demanding to name names, allow me the indulgence to mention some of these frontier peopleTony & Skippy St Elmo, Bob Hyman, Julian Brown, Ore Frueauf, Ces Dobson, Marnie Searles, the Spargos, Ken Bell, Baldie Blackwell, Bill Bridgeford, Lorna Dunkley, Geoff Henke, Brad Spalding, Gebi Auderer, Georg Pirmoser, Zigi Haberzetle, … and also from Innsbruck, Austria, Hans Fisher. Hans stands tall amongst this ensemble. The physical properties of any particular place is one thing, but it is the people who give life, and import meaning and purpose to others, and, to all the millions who have since skied and played at Falls Creek.

This photo by Nick Ivanco, shows Hans on the company snowmobile ‘getting a little air!’ in the late 70’s. It is rumoured that when the boss finally saw the shot, the word ‘dismissal’ was being bandied around!
He certainly ruled the roost in the ‘entertainment’ department at Falls Creek… with the biggest smile one could imagine... a ‘few drinks’ being ‘just the start’. His service to many, and caring for others was his trademark… he simply never let anyone down. His burly physique and strength, belied the generous and sensitive heart that lay deep inside. As an unrestrained poker player, he was just too honest to hit the big ‘bluff’, which is a metaphor for his personality. A (not so good) singer, but the notorious “Dina, Dina, show us your leg, a yard above your knee” was always a first request! And, what a skier! - 215cm ‘Kneissel White Stars’ with long-thong boot bindings - even the Austrian ski instructors got out of his way.
Hans' life exploits built every day, he truly left a legacy, and now we have the delight, and dare I say, pride, in always being able to reflect on the memories he gave to us all. From the mid 1970s, Hans had well and truly completed his apprenticeship, and gave all he could to everything he undertook - ‘cooking’ at various Falls Creek eating houses, lift company and slope maintenance, cellar man at the Noosa Pub and Surf Club. Forever honest and loyal to his friends, he was best companion and confidante to two lovely girlfriends (at different times!), Lyn at Falls Creek, and Chrissy at Noosa, the latter who I spoke with today, told me of her enduring love for Hans.
May the world be blessed with more people like Hans Fisher. •

Last Monday night the Kiewa Pump Station Action Group hosted a community information night at the Mount Beauty Auditorium. It was held outside so it was nice and Covid safe. Around 80 people attended to find out information about the weir and pumping station being proposed by North East Water (NE Water). Attendees included Alpine Shire councillors and the Member for the Ovens Valley (which will soon encompass the Kiewa Valley at the next election), Tim McCurdy.

Hard Waste Collection
As the catch phrase of the group implies, “Great Project, Wrong Location”, the action group fully support the intentions of NE Water to upgrade the water infrastructure for Mount Beauty, Tawonga and Tawonga South residents.

The speakers focused on three key aspects of the process to date: the biased nature of NE Water’s assessment of the site and the evaluation of individual criteria contained within it; the impact to the community that the loss of this key recreational site represents; and the lack of community engagement around the selection of the site.
It has been a record year for visitation this summer and Resort Management would like to get your feedback on events, visitor demographic, mountain biking and general observations.
The Action Group are asking for an independent assessment to allow the community to constructively engage with NE Water and take the next step of actively assisting in the selection of an appropriate site. One that does not have such a dramatic and obvious impact on the interaction with the river of residents and visitors to the area, as well as native wildlife.
Alpine radio will have a copy of the meeting on their website (* https://www.alpineradio. com.au) for you to listen to the entire discussion as well as some questions from concerned citizens raising questions they would like a response to, including: safety issues around the weir being so close to the pondage outflow. Are there any other sites that could be looked at other than the current proposed site? Exactly how big is the pump shed and weir going to be?

I remember at Barjarg the shuttles were always a bit delayed, we were hanging out down the bottom for so long that we nearly missed our race runs. When we got to the top, everyone was wondering where we’d been. He was just like “Ah we’ve just been chilling at the bottom.” So that felt pretty cool.

Iarrived in Falls Creek as the Artist in Residence for three weeks as the year changed from 2021 to 2022. I had never visited Alpine National park, having recently transplanted to Victoria, and all I knew was that I wanted to respond to the landscape, whatever I might find. My initial response was about all the textures and colours, the infinite variety in the snow gums, the spiky heath, the granite tors, the billowing fog. My overwhelming impression was that of a glorious variety of greys - but I didn’t want to evoke just grey, I wanted to somehow evoke my impression that all the colours that populated this landscape had a dash of white and black and them. Over a period of a week the word ‘panoply’ came – a word that means an extensive and impressive collection – so A Panoply of Grey began to come to life.
Once recordings were in hand I knew I had to find places where I could video my performances in landscapes that reflecting the ideas behind the recordings – so the incredibly rewarding and pleasurable process of scouting locations began, by days of hiking around all the trails nearby Falls Creek.

Process: Compose works responding to textures, evoking shifting spiky-leafed landscapes using my guitar and a loop station. A loop station can record a short melodic fragment and repeated it until you switch it back off again. Along the way I wanted to add two movements about insects for solo guitar: the Spotted Mountain Grasshopper, a comically awkward creature, and the Bogong Moth – a symbol of what has been lost and what is disappearing.
After working through the composition process by playing and experimenting, the next phase was recording the works, which I did looking out on the impressive views from Windy Corner.
The final phase of the work is putting it all together – editing and mastering the recordings, both audio and video. Bio
I am a storyteller that uses the medium of music. I am composer, performer, classical guitarist, educator, Alexander Technique teacher and creator of “narrative guitar” storytelling. These elements are combined together to explore the intersection between narrative and music, between live performance and recorded soundscapes, and extend the notions of what a classical music ‘concert’ might mean. •
