Little wonder the darkness has not understood it.
TThese thoughts are based on these bible readings – Psalm 96; Isaiah 9: 2-7; Titus 3: 4-7; John 1: 1-14.
he National Gravity Enduro Series acts as the qualifying series for the Enduro World Series. See mention in the article with Ben McIlroy.
Each year we celebrate anew the birth of Jesus Christ, not because of habit, not to strengthen our relationship with God, but to challenge it.
The Christmas story is about hope, peace, joy and love, and we need to ask ourselves if that continues to be our focus as we walk and talk the Christian lifestyle.
Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August.
In Isaiah and John, Jesus is introduced as the Light shining in the darkness, a Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, the Word of action and the Life that brings Light. John goes on to say, “The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.”
The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.
I would be surprised if anyone living in a “Christian” country, whether they belong to a church community or not, have not been hurt and burned by Christians – I know I have.

So often, we try to put rules around our relationships with both God and one another; we seem to have an insecurity about being different, about each of us being individual, each of us having our own path to follow.
Therefore, we demand that others live as we do, follow our concept of life and follow our rules and regulations. Unfortunately, that is the story of us using and abusing the story of Christmas.
Each of us has our own individual gifts and talents, and each of us has our own path to tread. Knowing and understanding our fears, God gives to each of us his Holy Spirit, providing us with the strength, passion, humility and grace to live and work with love and understanding (Titus 3: 4-7).
The biblical stories concerning the birth of Jesus, whether in the psalms, prophets or gospels resound with joy. They are all heralding a new and radically different relationship between God and humanity,
Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Cost is $50 per day or $90 for 2 days. Go to www.bluedirt. com.au to book. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig

revealing that His immense love is for all. There are no more boundaries, no one is excluded. Everyone needs to be loved.
God sent Jesus as a gift to the world, which inspired our tradition of sharing gifts with each other. When we accept that we are loved and lovable, we then respect ourselves for who we are, giving us the freedom to do the same for others. We can each be a gift to our communities.
Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the set slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!
This is Christmas. •

Upstairs Resort Management

This year’s photo with this article is a shot of the new Prinoth track vehicle (known as the pumper) which should arrive at Falls Creek prior to Christmas. The role of this vehicle is both summer and winter and is vital to any firefighting operation in this village. Another vital aspect of firefighting in the village is the ability of our CFA vehicles to get to any point in the village to attack any threat. Hence the reason we have restricted access to the village and no parking in the village
As a result of situations in previous summers, during the busy Christmas/ January period, Falls Creek village was advised by the CFA and Victoria Police that there were problems with too many vehicles in the village. Therefore, the village will be closed to parking from 5pm Friday 24th December to 8am Monday 10th January 2022. A half hour period will enable visitors to drive to their accommodation, unload and then remove their vehicle to the carparking below the village.
The years flash by; the numbers of actual returned service personnel diminishes - and yet the respect increases. Fortunately conflicts of the scale of WW1 and WW11 have not re-occurred.
The irony is that while we have promoted the village for summer trade – and this summer trade is growing – it produces its own set of different circumstances. As a snow resort, the concept of the ski through village is part of the resort’s attractiveness and visitor parking has always been accepted as ‘down along the road!’
New returned service personnel are now coming from the ranks of Vietnam Vets and those who have seen service in the Middle East. Numbers are being maintained by other service personnel and all are supported by the very appreciative public.
Over the years, the numbers of spectator supporters that have turned up to show their appreciation has grown dramatically. This, to me, says that there remains a very strong - yet unspoken - feeling of gratitude and respect among the community and in our quiet way, we just turn up and express our acknowledgement of our ‘diggers.’
The rise in summer trade has created its own set of problems - from the simple ‘blocking in of other vehicles’ to the biggest problem - the inability of our major firefighting appliance - the tracked vehicle ‘pumper’ – not being able to get to a fire!
ANZAC Day is the one of the few opportunities in the year where people can come together with a solemn and sincere purpose. It is a day that engenders pride and reinforces the gratefulness carried by the bulk of the nation. It is expected that this year will be no different. Falls Creek Service
The new ‘Pumper’ is designed to be used during snow season as well as during the rest of the year. It is capable of pushing water up to a height of four or five floors – very necessary in a resort on the side of a hill. It is also a little bit wider than your average ‘fire truck’ and the tracks make it

slightly less manoeuvrable than a normal vehicle of this size.
God forbid – should a fire start anywhere in the village and the ‘pumper’ not be able to reach the site, one does not need a lot of imagination to know that it would be ‘good night nurse’ for pretty well the whole village.
On the positive side, feedback from the community (residents and visitors alike) has been extremely positive. We are a family resort and the lack of vehicles in the village has produced a nicer ambience – with folk happy to wander most places, kids playing in the streets and enjoying riding their bicycles and scooters around the village. Also at this Christmas/January time of year, the village plays host to several hundred athletes and their coaches who spend a lot of time moving around the village on foot.
Then we have the mountain bike fraternitytaking advantage of our fabulous trails. One of the secrets to the success of our mountain biking program development is that the majority of the trails all hook up with the village.

The idea of Falls Creek Guides came about ten years ago after a trip to Chamonix ski touring and thinking we really don’t do much of that in Australia. Since then ski touring has become popular and so has mountain biking. The latest innovation in mountain biking is E- Bikes. So suddenly the idea of combining ski touring in winter and using the ease of Avanti E mountain bikes to access distant trail heads of Falls Creek become the perfect blend to be able to set up a year round guiding attraction to Falls Creek. Then main aim is provide an opportunity for people not that comfortable with the mountains, those looking for a special

occasion, celebrating the office year and those that wish to simply get to distant treks without the extra six km walk out from the Falls Creek Village.
Mark ‘Macca’ Mc Donald has lived and worked in Falls Creek since the late 80’s and has assembled a team of local guides to assist in developing a new way to access, enjoy and explore our wonderful environment. There are a variety of tours and levels available, all groups are private group tours with a maximum of six per guide. The trips are all day, starting and finishing in the comfort of Nelse Lodge. The lunches are lovingly prepared by Genevieve and Martin from Nelse.
Macca invites all to get out and explore with ease the beauty that surrounds us. For more information, go to: www. fallscreekguides.com.au •
With the support of Tourism North East and Diana Lodge, the Falls Creek Museum team are running several guided walks around the Wallace’s Hut to Cope Hut precinct, where we discuss Indigenous history, Bogong Moth history, cattle history, the SEC involvement in the area, the tennis competitions, the fires, the
first crossing of the High Plains on skis and the involvement and importance of Masie’s Plot. All we need is 24 hours’ notice and a group of five or more. A fabulous lunch and a glass of wine are provided at the end of the walk by Lisa at Diana Lodge. Proceeds of the walk go to the Falls Creek Museum. Go to the website: www. trailstalesandtucker.com. Check the dates and then make your booking. • Falls Creek Museum
Located in the Panabode building at 4 Slalom Street, (beside Halley’s Comet Chairlift) with the entrance at the Harvey Kat opposite the Last Hoot, the museum will be open from 12noon – 4pm at such times as we are able to garner volunteer support. Check for the bright yellow flags at the museum entrance – or phone the Visitor Information Centre on 032 5758 1200. All are welcome. Gold coin appreciated. Refer Notice on P2 of this publication. The museum may open for groups by appointment with 24 hours’ notice. Ph: 03 5758 1200. •

Summer is a time we love. The kids are on holidays, the visitors have arrived and everything is rolling along nicely. After the lock-down, folk from the metropolitan area are heading to the hills – and they’re loving it. A couple last week from Geelong, had their E bikes and they were off exploring the Gravel Trails around Falls.
If there is anything good that has come out of this COVID-19 disaster it is the fact that people genuinely seem to be caring for each other more and respecting each other more. The rush is not there, we’ll all get
looked after, and we are all in a very good place. Let’s keep it up while we enjoy these wonderful holidays. And what are we going to do?
There are quite a few houses in town where the owners have done a brilliant job of putting up a wonderful display of Christmas Lights. Well done to all those people – and thankyou for exercising a true spirit of Christmas.
At the time of going to print, there were about eight homes that have been brilliantly decorated and are worth the visit. There may be more, but your journo did not discover them prior to publication. •

Kiewa Valley Highway, Tawonga South Ph: 03 5754 1118 Em: info@rockyvalley.com.au Wb: www.rockyvalley.com.au
Areliable, clean water supply to the Upper Kiewa Valley is being pursued by North East Water (NEW).
To secure this for the residents of Mount Beauty, Tawonga South and Tawonga, NEW have proposed to build a pumping shed and weir on a narrow strip of land adjoining the West Kiewa River on Embankment Drive. This location is where the community accesses the river for swimming and recreation.
This proposal has angered many residents as the proposed site and the process by which it has been chosen by NEW has not taken into consideration the highly valued community recreational and visual qualities of this area, or the negative environmental impact.
Securing a reliable water intake for the township is a great idea. But the proposed location of the pumping station and weir is where the community mostly access the river for swimming and recreation. It has been subject to thousands of volunteer hours to develop into a welcoming and usable space. The community are keen to preserve and enhance it for residents and visitors.
There is also a resident platypus family at this location. We are keen to see their front yard preserved so they can continue to delight residents and visitors alike. Platypus are currently listed as a ‘vulnerable species’ and need all the help they can get to survive.
The community group spearheading the campaign to find a more suitable location

for the pumping station are planning a community meeting in January 2022 to solidify efforts to get NEW to listen to and respond to the community’s concerns – stay tuned for more details.
The key goal is to build the pumping station at one of the many alternative locations that secures the raw water supply but does not impact on the local vulnerable fauna or the high-quality amenity and clean environment now offered by the recreational space on the banks of the West Kiewa River.
Actions you can take right now are:
• Sign the petition. The petition organisers encourage anyone who feels that the location of the pumping station needs to be relocated to a more suitable area to add their signatures – to find the petition, go to www.change.org and search for ‘Kiewa Valley,’ the petition will display and be ready for your signature and to share to your contacts.
• Phone or email the offices of the following two members of parliament. Please note that our new local MP is Mr Tim McCurdy. He has already met us on site. He understands the issues and is already advocating for change. Our local representative in the Lower House (legislative assembly) in Victoria: Mr Tim McCurdy, MP 03 5721 6155 tim. mccurdy@parliament.vic.gov.au The Minister for Water in Victoria: Ms Lisa Neville, MP 03 9637 9654 lisa.neville@ parliament.vic.gov.au

• Join the community Facebook group “Great Project, Wrong Location - West Kiewa Pump Station Action Group” to keep up to date with news and required action to prevent the loss of our river access.

As an Outdoor Education Centre, Mittagundi was created in the late 70’s by a bloke called Ian Stapleton. It is and interesting place that gives young folk the opportunity to learn about life –because the place has no power, has a hot shower (if you light the boiler) and you grow your own food.
Not counting the last couple of years, Mittagundi has a regular open weekend where visitors are invited to come to the camp and see how it runs – to experience some of those pioneering skills that are almost lost.
The weekend starts with the Bush Dance at the Glen Wills hall on Friday 14th January and is followed by the open ‘Pioneers Skills’ day at Mittagundi on the 15th. Go to https://www.mittagundi.org.au/contact for further details or to book. •
It is with a very saddened heart that your editor advises the community of the passing of this community’s favourite and very much loved Santa, our own Bill Sutton.
As Santa, Bill filled many roles, but is probably best known for sitting on the roof of his garage in Valley Avenue and sliding bags of lollies down a pipe to the kids (that had been good).

His property was always fabulously decorated and lit with the Christmas Spirit. Bill also spent time doing Santa family photos at Tawonga South Store and made a regular appearance at Carols by Candlelight for countless years. Any money he made from the lollies or donations, he always handed on to smaller local deserving causes. Bill was also heavily involved in local footy and many years back, involved in the ‘Night Trots’ which was part of our regular Mardi Gras.
On behalf of the community, this paper would offer our condolences to Yvonne and the family – and we simply like to say “Thanks Santa for a great job done very well!” •
