In the last fortnight, Falls Creek has hosted two major events – with each one breaking records in different ways.
The Bicycle Network Peaks Challenge 2021 was held on Sunday 7th March and it was one of our best yet!
We had a record number of female participants – 13% of the total field. Bicycle Network (BN) were hoping to hit 12% and exceeded it! Almost 1850 riders set off on the 235km course. The start time was slightly delayed, first wave set off at 6.50am. This was the first time to have the 100km course (Falls Creek to Anglers Rest and back) included, which started at 9am with 170 riders participating. First 100km course rider over the finish line was Alan Davies in 3hours 53mins.
First 235km rider came in just after 2pm was Stinus Kaempe in a time of 7hours,

8mins – just shy of the Peaks course record of 7hrs, 2mins! First female rider in the 235km course, Justine Barrow, came in at 7hours, 34mins – fastest time for a female on record.
On the start line there was a lovely tribute made to a rider who had sadly passed away a few weeks earlier when he was hit by a car while out on a training ride. His mates that were participating were all riding with his number in memory of him.
Special thanks to the 150 volunteers out across the course on the day ensuring the safety of the riders, providing assistance and encouragement – so good to see so many people getting involved and all the support coming not just from the cycling network but also from the local communities.
The BN MC reiterated throughout the day that it didn’t matter if you came in first or after 13hours – all riders were Peaks Finishers and needed to be proud of their achievement. There were a number of riders that have ridden in all 12 Peaks Challenges!! There was lots to see and do over the weekend in the Event Village Bicycle Network built in Slalom Plaza, with the Big Screen, merchandise, vendors, kids activities and BBQ – it was great to see so many families and supporters hanging out on the grass on Sunday afternoon right through to the late evening relaxing and cheering on the riders as they came over the finish line. •
Now a regular feature on the Falls Creek Calendar, the Longest Lunch was held last Friday at Wallace’s
Hut with 225 diners making it our biggest yet. After some heavy rain and thunder on Thursday afternoon, Friday turned out to be a cracker day – all sunshine, all afternoon!
Many thanks go to the students and parents from Mount Beauty Secondary College who provided the food and beverage service on the day and did a fantastic job! We’re so lucky to have their support and appreciate the time they put into this event every year.
The group of riders aiming to raise $100k for the Steve Lee Fightback by riding from Fed Square in Melbourne to Mt McKay arrived at Wallace’s Hut after their summit triumph to hearty cheers and applause. Organised by Rob Fuleky and supported along the way by Doug Zollo and Noreen Prosser, the 10 riders, including Paul van der Ploeg, completed their ride over five days, stopping on the final night in Bright to host a charity auction to add to their fundraising efforts.
The Auction held during the Long Lunch raised just under $24,000 – a huge effort by the local community – all of the proceeds go to the Steve Lee Fightback. In addition to these fundraising efforts, the hat was passed around between courses and people dug deep! Nearly $3000 CASH was able to be handed over to Steve’s mum Noelene on the day, who was supported by Steve’s sisters Kerry and Tracy.
Barry Iddles and his team once again put on an incredible feast, and for anyone that missed out on tickets this year, the good news is that Barry has agreed to come back to cater for Long Lunch 2022!! •
In the early 90’s a group of us all gravitated to Falls Creek and landed in the Ski School. A few arrived earlier, some stayed a little longer, but thirty years later we have all remained good friends and still enjoy skiing together every chance we get.
When we heard about Steve’s situation, we all felt compelled to pitch in and help. Dieter Kahsnitz was the driving force behind the event and we quickly set ourselves the goal of $100k to support Steve’s ongoing recovery and treatment needs.
As we talked about Steve and his situation, we all reflected on the role he’d played, unknowingly, in us all coming together some 30 years ago.
Keen skiers, we grew up glued to Wide World of Sports on a Saturday afternoon, hoping Mike Gibson would cut to the highlights of the World Cup and a glimpse into what Steve Lee was up to. Steve was the reason we all wanted to ski at Falls. None of us were racers so the Ski School it was!
At this point it was all about watching Steve ski. There was always a buzz on the Summit T-Bar when Steve was out ripping around after work. Everybody would be craning to get a glimpse of his two or three turns across the summit before he disappeared over a roller in a vapour trail of snow.
As the years progressed, we found ourselves no longer watching Steve ski, but skiing with Steve. Catching up in Falls for dinner with Steve, Kerry and Noelene. Spending a few days back country in Hakuba with Steve and Tony Wright, another ski school legend from back in the day. All good times and spent with people who have such an affinity for being in the mountains, and enjoying life.
So as news of Steve’s stroke reached us across all parts of the world, we began to talk about how we could help. Diets rolled into action and the ride was birthed over a zoom call one afternoon, the Steve Lee Fight Back Ride: Melbourne to Mt. McKay.
So over five days, the team of 10 riders and a support crew of three navigated their way across Victoria to eventually end up at The Long Lunch last Friday. Along the way we raised close to $65K. With further donations to come from several charity events, it looks like we will land our target of $100K.
Lots of people to thank – the 10 riders, but I would like to specifically mention two Falls Creek locals, Dougie Zollo and Noreen Prosser, and stalwart of the ski industry, Mr. Rossignol, Rob Fuleky. Without their
contribution, we would never have made it out of Melbourne. The assistance we had from the Lee family was amazing. A huge thanks to Noelene, Kerry and Tracey Lee and Steve’s daughter Layla.

Perhaps one of the biggest reunions the Kiewa Valley has seen in a while, over 200 people gathered at West Peak on Saturday, 13th March to celebrate the launch of Diane Edmondson’s latest book, ‘Below Bogong.’
A history of Mount Beauty, the book is 412 pages of local history divided into 13 chapters. It begins with an overview of the area, and covers the early construction of the scheme, its people, and early settlement of Tawonga South, Lower Bogong, Bogong and Mount Beauty.
It also describes life in the town during the 40s, 50s and 60s, as well as miscellaneous events, accounts, places of interest, stories and memories supplied by individuals.
The book launch was an opportunity for many former community members to return to Mount Beauty and catch up with old friends, colleagues and school mates, with some reunited for the first time in over 50 years.
Diane said the event also attracted some of the valley’s most valued residents as far as the

history of the area and the Hydro Scheme goes, with the majority of them having early connections with the development of the scheme and the establishment of this town.
“These people welcomed me into their homes, and gave me access to their personal photographs and allowed me to interview them,” Diane said in her speech on the day.
“Their stories and memories form the foundations of my book. I thank them from the bottom of my heart for their encouragement and support, and I must say they were always on the end of the phone if ever I had a query.”
She also acknowledged the community members that had contributed to the book, but had since passed away, including Joan Price, George Rosen and Judy Hamilton.
“They were excited about the book and looking forward to seeing it come to fruition,” Diane said.
“When I had the pleasure of interviewing Joan Price, I was blown away by her excitement. I’ll never forget the day when she greeted me at the door. Once we were seated in side, and I was preparing to get my list of questions from my bag, Joan began, and she didn’t draw breath. When I left I had heard her life story, and it filled in many gaps about the history of Tawonga South - I didn’t even have to ask her a single question.”
Diane said many people had been involved in this community project, and she couldn’t have finished the book without them.
“The interest has been absolutely overwhelming from people from all over Australia - people who grew up in the valley or had some sort of connection to the valley,” she said.
The book is Diane’s second, having published ‘Tawonga Remembers’ in 2016.
She thanked everyone who attended the launch on Saturday, including the Rotary Club of Mount Beauty; the ladies from the
Kiewa Valley Historical Society; Mel and the team at West Peak Hotel; Brendan Maher who MC’d on the day; Barbara Pyle from the Historical Society; John, Christine, Mark and Lisa from North East Funerals for loaning the PA system and audio equipment; and her family and friends.
Describing the day as simply “amazing,” Diane said it was wonderful seeing friends reunited after so many years; a true testament to the bonds created in the valley.
“The one thing that has remained, as it did in those early development years, is the town’s community spirit. It is still a small town, and it is still relatively isolated, but the community that exists here is full of heart and soul.”
While the book was an absolute hit and sold out at the launch, copies of ‘Below Bogong’ are now available to purchase from the Mount Beauty Information Centre, Tawonga South Newsagency & Post Office, The Old Tawonga Store, and The General Store Dederang Store.

After an interrupted schedule (due to Corona Virus lockdowns) the Victorian Chapter of Fly Fish Australia deemed it safe to hold the inaugural State of Origin competition on Rocky Valley Dam at Falls Creek back in February.
Rocky Valley has been the venue for Victoria’s annual state championships (and numerous national titles) for many years as it is regarded as Victoria's best, selfsustaining, still water trout fishery.
32 participants travelled to the resort from various states for a two-day competition that included four, three hour sessions in boats, one in the morning and an afternoon session between 12:30pm and 2pm, alternating on the eastern and western half of Rocky Valley. The format is two anglers per boat to enable each trout caught to be measured and ratified by another fly-fisher. An important aspect of this event (and all competitions sanctioned by Fly Fish Australia) is it is catch and release and all participants must use barbless hooks to enable fish caught to be released and swim away unharmed.
The fly-fishers competing in this state of origin-style event had an additional element, the Rees Kennedy Shield named after Stuart Rees from Victoria and Pat Kennedy from NSW, regarded as their respective state’s most successful competitive fly anglers.
The scoring for the competition was an aggregate of the top five anglers from their respective states. The winner of each group, per session, receives a score of one, second place receives a score of 2, and so on. The angler with the lowest aggregate score after
After the two days of competition with total of 289 fish (287 brown trout and two rainbow trout) caught and released, the winner was 27-year-old Tom Jarman (Victoria) ranked number two in Australia. This is the second year in a row Tom has won this competition at Falls Creek. He's a world-class fly-fisher who has been in the top 20 world-wide for the last four years.
In second place, representing NSW/ ACT was David Hemphill, and third, also representing NSW/ACT was Glenn Eggleton (National President of Fly-Fish Australia.
The highly contested State of Origin results, when the total of the top five anglers from their respective states was calculated, went in favour of the NSW/ ACT team by a narrow margin of four points. The result was NSW/ ACT 98 Victoria 102. •

April 2021 Falls Creek will again host the Alpine Challenge, one of the toughest trail running races in Australia. Runners compete over seven distances from 10km – 160km taking in some of the most spectacular trails the Bogong High Plains has to offer.
Usually held in November, this run is a Covid Special, a catch up for the event that was postponed in November 2020, and now, because so many runners had their training curtailed they are now out running all over the state – and this is where the organisers of the Alpine Challenge would appreciate your assistance.

Focal lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016. On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.

Alpine Shire Youth invites you to the Alpine Colour Fun Run, a free community event for residents of the Alpine Shire. This year’s event will be held in Mount Beauty on Sunday, 21 March, from 9:30am - 3pm, where community members are invited to wear white and come out looking like a rainbow, all in the name of good health and celebration.
This event will take place at the Mount Beauty Recreation Reserve and Regulating Pondage, where participants are invited to run or walk 3km around the picturesque track circling the Pondage before making their way back to the Recreation Reserve. The run itself will begin at 10am.
Other activities on the day will include skate park workshops, an inflatable obstacle course,
tug-of-war, and Hero Blast Laser Tag. There will also be food available on the day. Due to the current COVID-19 directions, attendees must register to attend the Alpine Colour Fun Run. It’s Easter again in two weeks and it’s time to get out and rattle some tins for the Annual Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. And, as you would be aware, after a horrendous year we were not able to host our door knock in 2020 – therefore depriving the vital services at the Royal Children’s of much needed funds.
This year our local fire brigades will be out at the roadside collection point and also driving around the streets in town - give them a big wave as we could not do this without them. Also, we are looking forward to seeing the many local kids and families that support us every year.
This year will look a bit different; with COVID-19 rules we have had to change the way we are doing things. At the fire station, no one will be allowed inside. Tins can be collected at the back door and returned there once you have completed collecting. We will have hand sanitiser and wipes if you require. Our tins now have a QR code on them if people wish to pay online (and these donations still goes to our local total).
Also due to the new normal we won’t be having any food, but will still have Easter eggs.
There are two ways you can help. One is to help out collecting and we would love to see you all on Friday 2nd April from 9:30am at the Mount Beauty Fire Station (back door).
The other is to recognise the great work the volunteers do to support the Royal Children’s and dig deep to donate.
The Mount Beauty and District Tennis Club fielded three teams in the Kiewa and Talgarno District Tennis Association (K&TDTA ) competition over the summer period. The section two and three teams finished on top of their respective ladders and both teams won their way through to the grand final. The section four, junior team, which consisted of mainly first time competition players, narrowly missed out on finals.
The grand finals were held on a beautiful sunny day at the Tallangatta courts on Saturday 27th of February. The section three juniors played in the morning against Yackandandah Blue with their match coming down to the last set. Mount Beauty eventually won 4 sets 39 games to 4 sets 36 games. The team consisted of: Cambell Moorman, Tristan Eriksson, Nick George, Sebi Cosgriff, Henry Low and Jimmy Derrick. They are now back to back premiers having won the flag last year as well.
The section two team played Tallandoon and although it was a hard fought match Mount Beauty prevailed 7 sets 53 games to 2 sets 34 games. The team consisted of Claire LucasGear, Jase Gentile, Haylie Lutter-Wood, Mish Forrer, Tony Keeble, Natalie Flay, Cambell Moorman, Emily Barnes and Aaron LutterWood. There were a few tense moments during the match with Andrea hurting her foot in her first set, requiring Haylie to fill in and having to borrow shoes, clothes and a racquet. A member of the opposition had a sneaker fall apart and a replacement was eventually found! Well done to all members and to the organisers who have done a great job all summer.
