urge people to mark their diaries and come along. This is a presentation every learner, young driver and parent should not miss.”

Round One - Falls Creek

The National Gravity Enduro Series acts as the qualifying series for the Enduro World Series. See mention in the article with Ben McIlroy.

With motor vehicle accidents and associated deaths, injuries and trauma occurring at a rate five times higher on Victoria’s regional roads compared to city areas, a group of Bendigo Community Bank branches have pooled resources to sponsor a series of presentations by Carmen’s Road Safety Education throughout May in an effort to help reduce road accidents and save lives. Carmen’s Road Safety Education is one of Australia’s foremost road safety organisations.

Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August.

Chairman Andrew Randell of the Mount Beauty & District Community Bank said: “Internationally-renowned motivational keynote speaker, John Maher is the founder of Carmen’s Road Safety in Australia, and his talks have changed the lives of thousands of attendees at corporate events and schools.”

The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.

“We are very pleased to make this important road safety initiative available free of charge to students and parents and

“Bendigo Bank has supported many road safety initiatives over the years and believes the early establishment of good driving practices in young drivers is a vital and important skill-set, particularly in Australia’s regions. It is knowledge that will stay with them for life,” Mr Randell concluded.

About John Maher

John was the manager in Bendigo of a large Life Insurance company when he was involved in a horrific car crash. In that crash, he received life threatening injuries, and from those injuries, he was classed as unemployable at age 42. Thankfully, John had Income Protection Insurance and this became his and his family’s financial saviour for the next 16 years. But John and his family’s lives were changed forever and with the help of doctors and his family, John worked hard at recovering his mental and physical self. Sadly, a greater tragedy was to come when Carmen (18), the youngest of John and Ange Maher’s four daughters was killed in a car crash. Out of this tragedy was born Carmen’s Road Safety, leading to John

TAWONGA SOUTH

The Shop with The Lott!

Tattslotto is back in town, with Tawonga South Newsagency and Post Office launching the Lott in-store last week.

With only a small hiccup pushing back the official launch 24 hours, the system was finally turned on at midday on Tuesday, with the first ticket purchased within seconds.

After an eight month hiatus in the valley, which saw a lot of community members travelling to Bright and Wodonga to purchase their tickets, it’s no secret that Stephen, Lynne and Macca are thrilled to finally be able to offer the service in town once again.

of personnel scale re-occurred. and Middle supported spectator dramatically. very gratitude in express opportunities with that gratefulness expected location, 5:15am

Lynne said the updates to the shop have been a long time coming, and that adding the Lott has also been a fantastic opportunity to expand the family-run business.

“Since taking over the business 26 years ago, we’ve constantly looked for ways to evolve and offer new services to our local community and visitors to the area,” she says.

“As well as being the local post office and newsagency in Tawonga South, and recently adding an extensive range of giftware, this is yet another service we can offer our customers - so we really are the ‘shop with the lot’ now!”

Lynne said they had customers asking almost daily where they could buy Tattslotto tickets, and are really happy they can now purchase them locally again.

Mount Beauty Service

“It’s something we’ve been working towards since late last year, and we are very excited to finally be offering the service in-store,” she says.

Anzac Day Services are as follows. The Early Morning Service will take place in Bi-Centennial Park, Lakeside Avenue (beside the shire offices) beginning at 7am. A small informal service with a speaker from the local RSL. All welcome.

“Our customers are equally happy to see it return to the Kiewa Valley - it’s already been really busy, and we sold out our first two syndicates within a matter of days. We can’t wait to sell big prizes to our customers and make their dreams come true.”

The Anzac Day March will come down Hollonds Street, starting from the assembly point in Park Street, near the Police Station at 10:45am, but marchers should be assembled and ready to go at 10:30am. Whilst Hollonds Street will not be closed, traffic movement will be restricted as the marchers come down the street.

You may have noticed some big changes in-store in the lead up to the launch, with the original counter replaced with a much bigger and better version.

Tawonga South Newsagency and Post Office, 221 Kiewa Valley Highway, Tawonga South, is open from 6:30am – 6:00pm Monday – Friday; 6:30am –12:00pm Saturday; and 7:30am – 12:00pm Sunday. FALL LINES

Good Times

The Mount Beauty Music Festival proved to be a good time had by all who attended. The weekend hit off on the Friday night at the West Peak Hotel with Rex Stringer from Harrietville - our winner from the Alpine Shire Freeza Event April 2018. The evening then proceeded with the lovely Alice Skye and her sublime voice, thing's got a little naughty with Fanny Bouffante turning some heads, with her show 'Scandals’ - having recently performed her new show at the Melbourne Comedy Festival. Tyer Nakoa and Holly (from Bellingen) kept the audience going, But the highlight of the night was Z Star Delta (from the UK) Zee really got people up and moving. What a voice and she can play those drums.

Saturday was a full day of markets, outdoor stage and into the evening with Cranky Charlies, West Peak Hotel and the Community Centre full of quality artists performing ‘til late. Dr Hernandez was an awesome Cuban band and wow! - the community centre was grooving. Sunday we brought out the boys toys at the first 'Tow & Show' with a special addition of a Mad Max Car made by a local artist. The afternoon filled the town with music and a crowd at the 'Picnic by the Pondage’ was hit at the library.

Airport Development

If you have driven past the Mount Beauty Airport recently you will have noticed there are five new aircraft hangars under construction.

These privately owned hangars are being built by local aircraft owners on land leased from the Alpine Shire Council and the project is being overseen by the Airport Management Association. The hangar owners have collectively focused, where possible, to use local contractors and suppliers for the project.

When completed these hangars will bring the total number on the airfield to eleven including the Mount Beauty Gliding Club hangar.

A Life to Remember

The income from the hangar leases and visiting aircraft landing fees is used for the maintenance and improvements to the airport.

OUR HALF MARATHON 2019

LOCAL TALENT

39 Great Years

Great Success

TLhe original Mount Beauty Marathon was run in 1980, and won by a guy named Danny Flynn who grew up in Wangaratta. Danny worked at the Bogong Outdoor Education Centre. He went on to win the event again in 1981 – in the days when the race went north out the highway and back to Mount Beauty. Among the other significant names as early winners is one Jerry van der Ploeg in 1989.

ocal lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016. On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.

MR: Is this your first overseas race?

This year’s Mount Beauty Half Marathon fun run will take place on Sunday the 19th of May, 2019 – a major shift away from the traditional Saturday event.

Ben: Yep, first overseas race, first EWS (Enduro World Series), so it’s going to be pretty exciting.

MR: Is it excitement or are you nervous?

Ben: I’m probably a bit more nervous than excited. Excited to race overseas, but nervous because it’s such a big event.

MR: Have you heard anything about the tracks over in Rotorua, NZ?

There are events to cater for all abilities including 21km, 10km and 3km, so if you are aiming for a good time or to finish the 21km, are keen to participate with the crowd in the 10km or a looking for a more social 3km, there is something to suit your needs.

Ben: From what Chris (Panozzo) has said, they’re fast and there aren’t many rocks.

MR: How did you get into riding?

LThe events start from 10am between the swimming pool and the secondary college. Late entries are accepted on the day at the pool building up to 9:15am, although event organisers would prefer if you could pre-enter at: https://alpinetiming.com.au/ rg102/ before 6pm Friday and therefore enjoy paying the lower entry fee (i.e. save the late fee).

This is a great community event with support provided by the Kangaroo Hoppet, Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club, the Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club of Mount Beauty, the Mount Beauty Men’s Shed team and the Mount Beauty Secondary College.

But the main prize is a Falls Creek season entry pass for one lucky draw participant in one of the events. You have to be at the presentations to win the draw so it is a great opportunity to have some refreshments and socialise at the end of the event.

Ben: My first national year in 2015. I raced three events, Toowoomba, Adelaide, and Canberra and placed 3rd overall for the series. In 2016 I raced the Bright, Perth and Adelaide National series events winning all three and the U19 series overall. Ben: I first met Chris at a Victorian Enduro state round at Barjarg, I was still like Under 15s or Under 17s and I knew that he was a fast dude. I wanted to hang out with the fast guys so I wanted to hang out with Chris Panozzo. I remember at Barjarg the shuttles were always a bit delayed, we were hanging out down the bottom for so long that we nearly missed our race runs. When we got to the top, everyone was wondering where we’d been. He was just like “Ah we’ve just been chilling at the bottom.” So that felt pretty cool. After that he invited me to travel with him to the next round at Narbethong. During that trip we decided not to race any more of the Vic series. I thought that I wouldn’t really continue racing but then Chris invited me to Toowoomba. That was my first national race and from then on we just became mates and he invited me along to all

Ben: I’m racing the EWS in New Zealand and in Tasmania but this year I want to finish Year 12 and get out alive, do as much riding as I can and stay fit. It’s probably not the best year to be going into my first EWS because Year 12 takes up such a massive chunk of my time.

1. Buy Economical Tyres. It’s tempting to go cheap, but that can prove to be a mistake. Tests show they often increase stopping distance, have a negative effect on handling. They may also hit your fuel economy and need replacing more often.

We also have a local gourmet selection… Sourdoughs, Honeybird Coffee, Beechworth Honey and more!

MR: Have you got any plans for further studies such as University, or depending on how these two EWS events go, would you like to chance it and try to become a professional racer?

2. Drive gently when the car is cold. Cars are at their least efficient when they are cold. If you drive hard straight from start-up, you are redoubling the wasted fuel, and also wearing out the engine more quickly in the process.

Re-Use & Recycle

Falls Creek has implemented a ski reuse program, turning discarded skis and snowboards into eye-catching artworks throughout the alpine village. Two new ‘ski fences’ have been constructed during the summer months, re-purposing over 400 skis that would otherwise have been designated for landfill. Skis have been sourced from rental outlets at Falls Creek, and also the Alpine Shire region as part of this project.

Serving Resort Management’s dedication to sustainability, the ski fences have been constructed by resort staff in areas including a popular thoroughfare to Falls Creek Road, expected to become a point of interest this winter. Other recycled ski artworks installed recently include ‘The Wren’ in the Slalom Plaza fountain and ‘Throne of Skis’ at the Windy Corner Cross Country Ski Centre, both kindly donated by Michael Laubli, creative artist from Wodonga.

Discarded skis and snowboards are notably

difficult to manage for landfill operators and are unable to be stripped and recycled by recognised methods. With large piles of discarded snowsports equipment at local North East transfer stations, initiatives like this are valuable for the ski industry to maintain a responsible approach to sustainability.

EMERGENCY

Falls Creek Resort Management’s Asset Manager, Rachael Gadd, says the organisation’s Environmental Management Plan includes a recognised goal of 50% landfill diversion by the year 2020, a goal that looks well within reach with current rates at 46%.

Falls Creek has made great steps over recent years in promoting the resort’s heritage as an arts-based community. A dedicated Arts and Culture Strategy has seen a number of accomplished artists serve in the Artist in Residence program including a 12 metre tall mural of a Bogong Moth on the village’s water holding tank.

Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. Without the support of the local community and those who come along every year to help us collect, we would not be able to reach our amazing total.

Thanks to the local CFA brigades and the ‘counters’ who spend the day ensuring we have an accurate count and business who have money boxes out for us, this could not be achieved without you. This year we have raised $11,600 towards the appeal.

Thank you again for all the support and we look forward to seeing you on the 10th April 2020. •

Voting for Sat 18 May

AEligible voters, the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) will NOT have a mobile voting facility in Falls Creek for the Saturday, 18 May 2019 Federal Election.

Thus, there are three voting options for Falls Creek staff, residents and other voters:

2. Election Day voting 8am–6pm, Saturday 18 May 2019; the closest voting centre is the Mount Beauty Community Centre in Kiewa Crescent for Victorian residents, or Bright and Wodonga for interstate residents.

PROOF

3. Postal voting: you can apply for a postal vote online at www.aec.gov.au which must be received by the AEC before 6pm on Wednesday 15 May 2019. The AEC will then post the ballot papers to your nominated postal address. Applying for a postal vote is instant if done on-line; hard copy postal vote applications can also be downloaded per the above link, but the complete voting process would be much slower.

FALL LINES Community Bonfire

As part of the 2019 Feast High Country, a Tourism North East initiative, Falls Creek will be putting on a fabulous Bonfire on Saturday night on the shores of Rocky Valley Lake.

Now, at the time of going to print, there is a fair amount of snow-fall predicted on the BOM site, particularly for Thursday and Friday. Now if this is the case, check the Falls Creek Facebook site for updates. But, knowing that the forecasters can err, let’s talk about what is planned and what we can enjoy.

The 2019 Feast High Country runs over the period from May 3rd to May 19th and involves about 40 different establishments and functions. Check them out at www. feasthighcountry.com.au

Our part of the festival is the bonfire part, (not to be confused to with the Champagne Club Kiewa Valley hosting the Valley Fire Festival next week on Saturday 18th –see below) and last year was enjoyed by everyone.

Therefore, the Falls Creek community would like to invite all of our friends and guests to attend the Feast High Country

Bonfire to be held on the Rocky Valley Lake foreshore this Saturday the 11th May, 2019.

Rug up and keep warm around one of the biggest bonfires you’ve ever seen; rock to the sounds of our fabulous DJ and sample fireside treats like damper and marshmallows. Locally crafted Food and Beverage options will be available to purchase on site. Jerry’s Stall for Goulash and other tasty treats and Woodfire Desire for ripper pizzas.

As well as the big bonfire, we’ll also have some fire-pits for toasting, sitting around and cuddling. We may even get in a Laser Light Show if we’re lucky.

From around 5:30pm to about 8pm it should be a fun evening – if the weather holds out. Dress warm and enjoy good company, good food and good times. •

Fire, Family, Friends, Fun

Like a good bonfire? Come and kick back with friends and family at the new Valley Fire Festival, celebrating the season and the harvest in the Kiewa Valley.

On Saturday the 18th of May the Champagne Club Kiewa Valley is hosting the Valley Fire Festival (formerly Community Bonfire) behind Falls Creek Coaches in Tawonga South. From 3pm there will be marshmallows for purchase to toast on the fire-pits, delicious hot chocolate, and a fun hula-hoop workshop with our guest performer. The traditional bonfire will be lit at sunset, and local musicians will entertain us while the flames burn high. Thrilling fire artistry will light up your evening providing a great atmosphere for locals and visitors to socialise and enjoy the beautiful autumn night.
