Pushing Through

T2017 GRAVITY ENDURO NATIONAL SERIES

Round One - Falls Creek

he good news this week is that the Geelong Cats have made it to the preliminary finals, following a resounding victory over the GWS Giants. However, by the time you’re reading this, their path to the Grand Final will most likely have been sealed.

Tto move through it and make that choice have been defining moments in all annals of history. The Australian snow sports industry is at that point. It could be a breaking point or an opportunity to pivot, but one thing is certain, the industry is too big to fail, too important to the regional economies that surround the mountains and too special to so many people.

he National Gravity Enduro Series acts as the qualifying series for the Enduro World Series. See mention in the article with Ben McIlroy.

In better news, by the time you’re reading this, there is the likelihood that the lifts will be spinning into the end of the official snow season, October 3rd.

Spring skiing, albeit this season, truncated, will allow that final opportunity to work on the goggle tan, get that final few runs in and, if you’re lucky enough to be here (sorry Metro Melbourne – we’ll see you next year), enjoy some of the best food and wine available in the Victorian ski industry.

The ups and downs of this season have pushed everyone involved in the industry to breaking point. The emotional, mental, physical, and not to mention, financial adversity experienced by business operators and staff, has been felt deeply. However, those with the ability to, have persevered, they have kept going and pushed through, despite the hurt.

Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August. The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.

It has been said, that adversity builds character, whilst it also reveals character. Having the guts to persevere, to push on,

The personification of all that embodies perseverance, dealing with adversity and the character it unearths was no more evident than recent footage of Falls Creek’s favourite son, Steve Lee, skiing! That’s right. This week, Steve with the help of his family and friends got back up on ski’s. Not more than twelve months after having suffered a debilitating and life-changing stroke. Steve’s life changed, dramatically, on September 6, 2020. A professional athlete, World Cup winner, 3x Olympian, backcountry guide, mentor and friend to many, faced the unthinkable, the unfathomable. He went from being able to do all these things, to fighting for his life.

In the words of his sister, Kerry Lee-Dodd “His life will never be the same. What he has achieved in this year is nothing short of miraculous. Every medico and therapist can’t believe where he is. Is it enough, no!? Will it ever be enough, who knows? But I admire his fight, sense of humour and still exceptional generosity. He has his down moments too.

Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Cost is $50 per day or $90 for 2 days. Go to www.bluedirt. com.au to book. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig

But is grateful he is here. And so are we all.”

So, in reflecting on what Steve has achieved and overcome this past year, it can remind us all, that no matter what we are going through, there is inspiration all around us, and in this case, right here in Falls Creek. In no small part, what Steve has achieved would not have been possible without a dedicated, committed and just as resilient family and tribe of supporters and professionals. Having that support network is critical, so too, professional help. Please refer to the advertisement in this paper, with resources that are accessible to provide help and assistance.

No time to be smelling the roses during this weekend’s Gravity Enduro. Pic - Jiri Cech.

Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the set slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!

A Request

At the time of writing this Dan Andrews still has Falls Creek closed to all visitors, so for the lucky few living here, and the Australian Cross Country Ski Team, can all take advantage of great spring weather, zero crowds and continued trail grooming by Falls Creek Resort Management.

Sources deep in the Andrew’s government are suggesting it may not be too much longer and Kiewa Valley locals should be xc skiing again, or maybe not.

Regardless, I thought it might be timely to remind people about courtesy when it comes to using the groomed xc trails.

Especially in spring conditions, please stay off the freshly groomed trails in the late afternoon, this applies to walkers and skiers. The foot print and ski marks are deep due to the soft spring snow and then quickly freeze as the temps drop, making for very difficult skiing the next morning.

If you are walking on the trails please keep to one side and avoid the classic tracks, once again chewed up tracks make for challenging skiing.

The groomers spend a lot of time and effort redoing the trails every night and become frustrated when walkers and skiers unnecessarily destroy their work.

Let’s hope we will all be up there soon, skiing in one of the best back yards in the country! •

KANGAROO HOPPET

The Best Way!!!

The Kangaroo Hoppet has wrapped up for another year with a great participation level and many wonderful stories from a virtual event.

Way back in the sunny and free days of February, the Organising Committee decided to again offer a virtual Hoppet so that overseas skiers could keep up their involvement with the event despite being locked out of the country.

By June, the committee were still thinking along the lines of offering a real event for Victorians, plus folk from within the Border Bubble and the ACT, but by early August, reality set in and the Virtual Hoppet became the only offering. The option of a refund or transfer of entry to 2022 and free entry to the virtual event was offered to all those who had entered the actual event. Only 5% have asked for a refund, which is a wonderful vote of confidence in our event.

ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.

The Virtual Hoppet attracted almost 1200 entries with 31 countries and all Australian states and mainland territories represented, and ages from just a few months to 83. (The babies and toddlers competed in the pouch class, reserved for children who were carried or towed along by their parents.) The following countries were represented by a grand group of participants: Argentina, Austria, Canada, Czechia, Dubai, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and the USA.

MR: Is this your first overseas race?

Ben: Yep, first overseas race, first EWS (Enduro World Series), so it’s going to be pretty exciting.

MR: Is it excitement or are you nervous?

Ben: I’m probably a bit more nervous than excited. Excited to race overseas, but nervous because it’s such a big event.

MR: Have you heard anything about the tracks over in Rotorua, NZ?

Ben: From what Chris (Panozzo) has said, they’re fast and there aren’t many rocks.

MR: How did you get into riding?

Ben: Pretty much because of my Dad,

three events, Toowoomba, Adelaide, and Canberra and placed 3rd overall for the series.

In 2016 I raced the Bright, Perth and Adelaide National series events winning all three and the U19 series overall. I then went on to win U19 National Champs in Adelaide (with a time that would have knocked Troy Brosnan off the elite podium).

MR: How did you end up travelling and racing alongside Chris Panozzo (2 time Elite Gravity Enduro Australian champion)?

The activities and stories were as diverse as the locations from across the world. As well as the expected running, walking, cycling, mountain biking and, for those lucky enough to live in a Victorian Alpine Resort or in the Snowy Monaro LGA, cross country skiing. Other activities included exercise machines, paddle boarding, canoeing, swimming and one in a wheelchair on the rail trail in the Ovens Valley, or a 21km beach running slog (well done Barb Plant!). Altitudes ranged literally from sea level (one lady swam 7km at Middle Park, taking three days as she stayed within her daily exercise time limit) to 3000 metres (a Swiss skier doing 42km on the glacier at Les Diablerets). Jussi from Finland paddled a sea kayak for 93km over two days in the gulf of Bothia.

Ben: I first met Chris at a Victorian Enduro state round at Barjarg, I was still like Under 15s or Under 17s and I knew that he was a fast dude. I wanted to hang out with the fast guys so I wanted to hang out with Chris Panozzo. I remember at Barjarg the shuttles were always a bit delayed, we were hanging out down the bottom for so long that we nearly missed our race runs. When we got to the top, everyone was wondering where we’d been. He was just like “Ah we’ve just been chilling at the bottom.” So that felt pretty cool.

After that he invited me to travel with him to the next round at Narbethong. During that trip we decided not to race any more of the Vic series. I thought that I wouldn’t really continue racing but then Chris invited me to Toowoomba. That was my first national race and from then on we just became mates and he invited me along to all

The Virtual Event, and the long-term sustainability of the event is reliant and genuinely appreciative of the major sponsors. AGL have remained a committed partner since the beginning and continue to provide financial and logistical support for the event as part of their contribution to the community that they live and operate in.

AGL also invest in athlete scholarships each ear that support the aspirations of Australian skiers to compete internationally (more on this topic in a later edition).

The Mount Beauty and District Bendigo Community Bank have recently joined the Hoppet as a major sponsor and have been vital in supporting the event through the COVID disruptions.

Falls Creek Resort Management have maintained vital support for the actual skiing event through financial, logistical support and preparation of great trails for the event and during the season. All major sponsors of the Hoppet are vital to the ongoing sustainability of the event and the Hoppet Organising Committee and skiing community are genuinely appreciative of their support.

While a great way to get motivated to do some exercise, the Virtual Hoppet was primarily aimed at keeping connected during our second year of pandemic restrictions. Many participants shared their stories on the Facebook page Kangaroo Hoppet – Do It Your Way. Take some time to check it out as there are so many great stories from the valley and around the world.

Next year… surely the event will run on snow as before! It will be a big celebration for the Hoppet as 27th August will be the 30th staging of the event. Keep it in mind, and get those skiing muscles sorted during summer and help us celebrate this amazing event in 2022! •

It is a credit to the organisers and a thanks to everyone around the world that the virtual Hoppet has kept people in touch and has added a fantastic positive element to a somewhat difficult winter. Well done everyone! Ed

COMMUNITY PAVILLION FOR THE KIEWA VALLEY

Plus Improved Golf Club Facilities

The Upper Kiewa Valley could soon have a brand-new community facility and function centre overlooking the scenic 18th green of the Mount Beauty Golf Club.

The 2019-2020 Black Summer Bushfires impacted many lives across Australia and in the Upper Kiewa Valley. In support of local community recovery needs, the proposal for the Upper Kiewa Valley Recreation & Community Hub (UKVRC Hub) was formed, for which the Club is now seeking funding through the Commonwealth Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants program.

The proposed Hub comprises of a Community Pavillion - a flexible space dedicated to community use for events, functions; a Club Pavillion - an open space designed for a multitude of uses, incorporating player facilities; and a Food and Beverage Pavillion - a quality, retail restaurant, open to all, to be run by a commercial operator.

Chair of the sub-committee working on the project, Stephen Short, said the Club believes the facility would be a valuable asset to the entire community.

“With the original clubhouse built by volunteers in the 1950s, it’s been a dream of the Club to provide a contemporary facility for players and visitors, and the wider community, for a long time,” Mr Short said.

“The aim of the Club is to expand our local community benefit beyond fitness and mental health for players to include the greater community, and we believe a facility that is welcoming and available to use by all community members will be a fantastic asset to our region.”

It has been a record year for visitation this summer and Resort Management would like to get your feedback on events, visitor demographic, mountain biking and general observations.

Therefore you are invited to join the relevant Resort Management personnel and other members of the community for a summer season debrief meeting. This meeting will take place on Wednesday 26th April from 9:30am to around 11:30am in the Boardroom above Foodworks in QT.

If funding is approved, the new facility would provide a range of social, economic and health benefits to the local community. In the first instance, the build would provide construction jobs and the ongoing management of the facility would offer a wide range of employment opportunities.

In addition, the facility would foster increased visitation and visitor expenditure in the region, an increase in demand for

local accommodation and a new business opportunity for a commercial food and beverage provider. Importantly, the Community Pavillion provides a new space for use by over 80 local community groups.

“With a brand new facility, we of course would also love to see an increase in golf participation and membership numbers, including being able to offer social memberships, to ensure the longevity of our Club,” Mr Short said.

“If successful, we will be able to market the facilities, golf course and wider township as a destination for events such as corporate retreats, conferences and workshops in order to attract new visitors to the region.”

A celebration of Lyn’s Life will take place on Friday the 28th April 2017 in the Village Bowl at Falls Creek for anyone who wishes to attend and pay tribute. Commencing at 12 noon, the afternoon will reflect Lyn’s enormous contribution to Falls Creek. Some wine and a light BBQ will be provided, but we ask that you bring other beverages and also a plate to share. In the case of wet weather, a contingency plan will be in place. Friends are welcome to pass this invite on and it is understood that members of Lyn’s family will be in attendance. • Trade Fair @ Falls Creek

The proposed Community Facility and Function Centre to overlook the 18th hole at the Mount Beauty Golf Club.

The Hub has already received strong support from local community groups and businesses, including local hospitality providers, as well as the Federal Member for Indi, Dr Helen Haines MP, State Member for Benambra, Mr Bill Tilley MLA, Alpine Shire Council, Alpine Health, Mount Beauty Chamber of Commerce and Golf Australia.

The Club has also received a financial pledge of $200,000 from the Mount Beauty and District Community Bank should the grant application be successful.

“Developing the project with local support and participation has been a big focus for the Club, as we want to make sure our local business owners and community members share our vision and see the value this facility will bring to our region,” Mr Short said.

The Mount Beauty Golf Course, which is fully maintained by volunteers, encompasses an 18-hole course and clubhouse with 135 members. It currently attracts around 1000 visiting players each year.

FALL LINES

Community Sponsorship Program

Round 2 of 2021 Community Bank - Mount Beauty & District community sponsorship program is now open, and closes on 30th September.

Like many others throughout the wider community, so many of our local clubs, groups and organisations have been forced to suspend their operations and activities due to the necessary COVID-19 lockdowns. However, it seems that restrictions on movement and activities may be gradually eased. This will give hope and will allow planning to re-start. New equipment and facilities can be planned for. Tennis Anyone

The Mount Beauty Tennis Club is keen to hear from anyone who may be interested in playing in the upcoming Kiewa and Talgarno District Tennis Association summer competition. The pennant usually occurs each Saturday between late October and February with a 2 week break over the Christmas period. The senior competitions commence at 1pm with section 1 for more competitive players and section 2 a little more relaxed. Senior teams consist of 6 players of a mixed gender make up. The junior competitions commence at 9am with section 3 (usually older more experienced juniors) and section 4 (younger less experienced players). Four players of any gender are required each week for the junior teams. The club intends to enter a Section one team for the first time in many years if a couple more male players can be found. For more information or to register your interest please contact: Andrea Moorman (0459 780 079) or Mish Forrer (0417 206 672). •
