Round One - Falls Creek
The National Gravity Enduro Series acts as the qualifying series for the Enduro World Series. See mention in the article with Ben McIlroy.
This was my 7th opening weekend as CEO of Falls Creek Resort Management and each one has been different.
However, as challenging as they’ve been, this one was probably the most anticipated, yet least hyped and most cautiously optimistic and hopeful of them all, for all the obvious reasons!
Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August.
With our Melbourne supporters unable to participate in festivities and other borders still fragile from COVID-19, it was absolutely tremendous to still see so many people across our regional tribe come up and enjoy a longawaited slide down the hill. Thank you.
The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.
This ‘claytons’ opening (for those old enough to get the reference) will be supplanted by Opening Weekend 2021 2.0 on the 26th of June, the first weekend of

the Victorian and NSW school holidays, with a little more fanfare and fireworks, to properly kick the season into gear.
With the myriad of restrictions, it was extremely pleasing to see and watch people abiding by the resort entry and QR code registration process, actively distancing in venues and lift lines and generally being considerate of the need to keep the resort as safe as possible.
Speaking of safe, the outstanding work by both mother nature and the snow making and grooming teams provided excellent opening weekend turns, with outstanding snow conditions (can’t say the same for visibility) for all to enjoy. It was so good in fact, visitation to the resort was the second highest opening weekend in terms of visitor days, marginally missing out on 2019’s record.
By the time you’ve read this, there should have been approximately 10-15cm top up mid-week and a few windows of opportunity to make a bit more too.
For regular readers of this column, you’ll know I have a few favourite topics or themes… these generally revolve around - gear… any type of
Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig

ski gear from clothes to ski’s to boots, goggles, gloves, thermals, roof racks, snow tyres etc… you name it. I love nothing more than reading gear reviews and watching the technological innovation within the industry. My second passion is the weather and the dismal science forecasting same has become… and another hot topic is rubbish, waste, litter… call it what you will! From cigarette butts, coffee cups, paper bags, discarded Macca’s or KFC takeaway strewn over the edge of car parks… but now… it’s disposable masks.
Disposable masks (the blue ones) or single use protective masks. These surgical masks aren’t paper, despite their feel. They are in fact polypropylene, part of the thermoplastic family. They are estimated to take up to 450 years to break down if not disposed of properly. Worse still, the micro plastics will contaminate water and are likely to be ingested by animals in the food chain… so if you drop it, you’ll drink it or eat it… eventually.
So, what to do. Firstly, do not place them in the recycling bin… the general waste bin is appropriate. Alternatively, please take them home and dispose of them properly.
Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the set slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!

Foodie Tip of the Week: Again, for regular readers, you know I have to dine out at least two, if not three nights a week to get through the smorgasbord of options at Falls Creek. This week, with the help of my teenage sons, we broke tradition (normally start the season off at Someplace Else Bar & Grill) and headed to the Last Hoot.
Traditionally, ‘The Hoot’ has been pasta and pizza… not this year. Burgers have been added to their refined menu and WOW they’re good. A staple is always the cheese, bacon and garlic bread starter, which was woofed down by two very hungry boys. What followed were three outstanding burgers… the pulled pork burger, then the loaded pork burger and the buttermilk fried chicken burger, all with obligatory fries. The pork is slowed cooked at Tim & Ben’s other regional foodie pub – The Myrtleford Buttery Factory, now called the Old Factory (and Brewing Co.). 12 hours of slow cooked deliciousness, so tender. Whilst the buttermilk fried chicken burger should have the Colonel quaking… it was delicious. Son number one had regrets however, by not trying the 400g double cheese burger… so I guess we’ll be going back. Book on 03 5758 3088… oh and try the Old Factory beers on tap… the Pale Ale is mighty drinkable.

LOCAL HISTORY
Racing - Stimulates!
Such was the title of an article in the May 1950 edition of SKI-HORIZON magazine, the official journal of the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs (F.O.V.S.C) which was formed in 1947. The journal included a regular item by members “Why I Ski” and Skippy St Elmo, pioneering skier at Falls Creek wrote about her passion for racing. Then 33 years old, Skippy had first skied only five years earlier when, newly married, she and her husband Toni spent the winter living in Wallace’s Hut. After the winter working as an assistant to the S.E.C hydrological surveyor Toni was offered a new post doing similar work measuring snow depths and water flows for the S.E.C’s Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. In 1946 the couple became the first full time residents of Falls Creek.

Skippy’s introduction to racing came that year when Toni entered her in the first club championships held by the Bogong Ski Club at Rocky Valley. “Up to that stage,” Skippy wrote, “my skiing was confined to the practice slopes and it seemed like I had joined the ranks of ‘no hopers’ - getting nowhere fast.” With five minutes’ notice that she was competing in the open slalom Skippy’s ‘legs went to jelly.’ “I do not even remember going through the flags - perhaps I didn’t - still at the end of the nightmare run I was happy to learn that the third fastest time was mine. I knew from then
on my goal was to be a racing skier but did not realise how hard and long the road was to be and still is.”
Skippy trained with the men from Bogong Ski Club and in 1949 won both the Downhill and Combined State Championship held at Mt Buller. In her memoirs she recalls that “I could now understand why Toni had insisted I train hard. Racing had been fun, as well as an unforgettable experience. I had felt strong and managing the rough and ice patches in the downhill was no trouble to me. After my second run in the slalom I felt so fresh and fit I was ready to do it all again.” The following year she was selected in the Victorian team to compete in New Zealand.

his rounds of the water races at weekends training with the team from Bogong Ski Club “…jogging over the plains and climbing steep slopes and river hopping along the upper Kiewa. If the weather was bad we would practice the art of tying our feet into skis with the ‘Long Thong.” Back in those early days safety bindings were unheard of. The binding of the day, as far as Toni was concerned, was unsuitable for his technique of skiing. The use of the ‘Long thong’ (a 7 foot 2.13m length of leather) securely held the boot to the ski, with absolutely no movement. I remember when I raced at Hotham and Buller I was conscious of the whispered jokes about my crazy leather bindings.”
In 1951 the first rope tow was established in the Falls Creek bowl, but now coached by Hungarian born Milan Kovacic, Skippy was training further afield on the slopes of Mt McKay and Ruined Castle. With the long climb up two runs was usually the maximum they achieved. The ski run down from the Ropers lookout was also a regular training slope. A highlight in Skippy’s racing career came in 1953 when Albury Ski Club held an Open Championship. Competing against the men in giant slalom and down-hill Skippy won the event. She wrote “it had never for a moment occurred to me it was any big deal racing against the men. Both Toni and Milan had always insisted I ski with the men whenever it was possible. John Wagner and Frank Prihoda, both Czech Olympic skiers, were both very friendly and helpful. John Wagner offered me advice which I gladly accepted ....and I did manage to win. Later, John told me, in his experience skiing, even in Europe he had never known a woman to win an Open Ski Championship.” Skippy was then 36 years old. • Article kindly supplied by Diana Patterson, a previous board member with FCRM and a member of the Falls Creek Historical Society.

XC News
Well that storm the BOM promised us was a bit of a fizzer for Falls Creek, but we did get snow on the ground, the cross country groomer was out and people were skiing. Of course we were disappointed with the rain that followed, but the winter solstice is not until next week so anything before then is a real bonus.
Our shop and café are coming together, the new ski rental fleet has arrived and the team at Falls Creek Cross Country are getting back into the swing of things.
We are optimistic for a great season (as always) and it is good to know that Falls Creek has a couple of the best and most motivated xc groomers in the country. The great xc track skiing that Falls Creek is famous for is only possible with the expertise of experienced and motivated operators backed up by modern grooming machinery and the dedication of Falls Creek management to provide xc skiers a fantastic experience. This season there are two machines available for grooming the trails, a smaller lighter Prinoth Husky with rubber tracks for early season, low snow and

New Exercise Equipment
The Rotary Club of Mount Beauty is very excited to announce that it has completed its project of installing Outdoor Fitness Equipment (OFE) for the community of the Upper Kiewa Valley.
In these uncertain days of COVID lockdowns when many people are suffering loneliness and depression, the club have provided an opportunity for our residents to get out of the house and improve their wellbeing by exercising in a
safe and beautiful outdoor environment.
Because our towns are spread over an eight kilometre stretch, there are two locations for this OFE – one in Jack Heberle Rotary Park in Tawonga South and the other in Pioneer Park in Tawonga – thus giving the whole community the opportunity of getting out and doing something positive. In planning this project, the Rotary Club was fortunate to have obtained two grants towards the OFE – $60,000 from the Mount Beauty and District Community Bendigo Bank and $40,000 from the Alpine Shire via the Bushfire Community Recovery program – for which we are truly grateful. The Alpine Shire Mayor, Cr John Forsyth, performed the ‘official opening’ last Wednesday accompanied by the majority of the members of the local rotary club and representatives from the Community Bank, Mount Beauty and District.

To maximise your appreciation of our resort, a visit to the museum is a must. Open from 12noon until 4pm this Saturday, the museum is fantastic. There are many relics and some great films from many days back and it presents a fantastic insight into how our village grew.

Karen Smythe – has done a fabulous job of putting this museum together. But, during winter, many of the Historical Society members are flat out working their ‘normal’ jobs. Therefore we are looking for volunteers who would love the opportunity to spend some time staffing the museum to keep it open so that people can take advantage of the fabulous collection of material and videos. As an opportunity to learn about our resort and its history, volunteering in the museum is gold! Phone 03 5758 1200 if you are interested. Kade Sarte is a talented artist located in the Albury and surrounding areas. He specialises in Custom Street Art with the aim to make people happy. Kade is the guy that did the wonderful Street Art on the amenities block down at the Mount Beauty Cricket and Football oval.
Together with Traverse Alpine Group, Kade designed a happy and lively piece which brings out the beauty of the Falls Creek Native animals and flowers, as well as the character of Huski Kitchen.

Why Cave Men Never Skied
As we’ve evolved over the millennia, humans are asking their bodies to do far more than they ever have. Gymnastics, ballet, unicycle hockey, chess boxing and bobsleigh (where your bones don’t break ‘they shatter’) to name a few. It’s important to remember that skiing and ski boots, are not a natural environment for the foot. Nor is it a natural activity or position for your body to be in – humans did not evolve to go skiing and so we need that extra support. Hence the need for a honking, great, stiff, plastic boot to connect skier to the ski – something cave men didn’t have access to.
Skiing recruits the extended use of different muscle groups that everyday life does not. This is why after lunch the muscles feel depleted, fatigued and another hot chocolate is far more appealing. Technique and fitness come into play in this, but boots also have a huge impact on stance on your skis and whether the correct muscles are activating.
So often people confuse the role of the boot and the ski. The choice of boot for a skier or boarder is influenced far more by biomechanics and enthusiasm levels (your boot can’t tell how good the technique is, but it can tell how much energy is being pushed into it) than the type of skiing. Ski choice is far more dependent on the snow conditions and where the skiing will be done. So, it’s a good idea to let someone who knows biomechanics fit a ski boot

For Winter
• Check your battery. Cold weather is hard on all batteries. Make sure yours is in good nick.
• Replace your wiper blades and keep your washer bottle full. Trying to rid your windscreen of ice with your wipers will only damage the blades.
• Check the condition of your tyres – or even consider getting winter tyres- more grip in slippery conditions.
• Make sure your tire pressure is exactly what it should be.
• Check your wheel chains and ensure that you know how to fit them correctly. Too many problems are caused by people not knowing how to fit chains correctly!
• Check the amount of coolant/anti-freeze in your radiator. Our Service Centres have a Glycometer which will measure how cold your radiator fluid can get before freezing.
• Carry a few emergency supplies, like a blanket, warm gloves, ice scraper, shovel – in case you get stuck out on the road.

Orthotics in everyday or sports shoes are for the forces that go through the foot when you walk and run. Dial it up to doing 60km/hr or more on skis and those forces are exponentially increased and acting upon the foot in a vastly different way. This is not what the foot was designed to do! That foot needs some serious support.

A ski podiatrist (what better way to describe the role?) is also the best person to see when there are some of the more serious niggles like a Moreton’s neuroma, plantar fasciitis, excessive pronation or circulation issues. The management of these in a ski boot is often more effective than in a regular shoe. Pain from boot or body issue can sometimes be difficult to determine from the initial assessment. A recent client wasn’t sure if their boot pain was caused by a previous leg injury and subsequent muscle issues, or if the boot was unsuitable to their body and biomechanics. A few quick functional muscle tests and it was clear

These risks include rapid changes in the weather, visibility and surface conditions, as well as natural and artificial hazards such as rocks, trees, stumps, vehicles, lift towers, snow fences and snowmaking equipment.
