GRAVITY ENDURO

2017 GRAVITY ENDURO NATIONAL SERIES

By Team Mount Beauty

TIt would be fair to say that Team Mount Beauty would have to be one of the longest standing and most progressive mountain bike clubs in the state. The club has been staging very well run events from as far back as the mid 90’s and pulled of a huge coup with the staging of the Nationals in February 2000, prior to the Olympics in September 2000. This weekend, February 23rd and 24th should be no different.

Round One - Falls Creek

Team Mount Beauty will provide equal cash prize money to both the male and female in the elite categories.

The Team Mount Beauty Gravity Enduro will held on the iconic single track of the Big Hill MTB park. The descents will be a mix of technical trail and fast flowing single track. Entry for the weekend is capped at 300 riders.

Proudly supported by: • All Terrain Cycles, Bright • Blue Dirt Mountain Biking • Yarra Valley Cycles • Settlers Tavern • Snowview Apartments • Falls Creek Resort Management.

We sincerely thank these sponsors for their continued valuable supporting of this event.

he National Gravity Enduro Series acts as the qualifying series for the Enduro World Series. See mention in the article with Ben McIlroy. Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August. The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.

And, this year two new categories have been added. An e-MTB category for both male and female and a ‘Le Petit Enduro.’ This category is designed for new riders to the gravity enduro format and racing - it is shortened to four stages and will not include the Honeysuckle stage.

Also the U15 category will not include the Honeysuckle stage, to reduce the overall race time as per MTBA recommendations. Riders must be 13 years or older on 31st March 2019 to enter.

Race Stages;

Stage 1 – Mount Beauty top to car park. Stage 2 – Honey Suckle. Stage 3 – Mount Beauty saddle to Cranky Charlie. Stage 4 – Mount Beauty top to 5 ways. Stage 5 –Cattle yards to car park. Stage 6 – TBC.

Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Cost is $50 per day or $90 for 2 days. Go to www.bluedirt. com.au to book. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage.

raced tracks and some we haven’t raced before. • Shuttles are provided by TMB only and are included in your entry. NO self-shuttling will be permitted.

Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig

Another Ripper Weekend

Well yes, it turned out to be a ripper weekend, but that freezing wet Saturday arvo didn’t help. But, a good dinner and a good night’s sleep meant that Sunday was much better and everyone got right into it.

With lots of volunteers ready, Falls Creek was set to stage the 4th annual MTB de Femme over the weekend. The MTB de Femme has grown from an initial “the guys are riding – but where are the girls? Why don’t we put something on social media and see how we go. If we get 25 it will be a success” That was four years ago and 50 registered and 75 turned up. “Methinks we’re onto something here!”

ANZAC Day Dawn Service: 5:45am6:15am. Service at Eagle Rock - including a Bagpipe recital.. All friends and visitors welcome. For further information please call 03 5758 1202 or visit www.fallscreek. com.au/Events.

Mount Beauty Service

The two day female-specific social weekend focuses on encouraging women of all ages and abilities to develop their skills and confidence on a mountain bike. As mentioned, mountain biking is largely male-dominated in participation and competition - social events such as this are great for building the rate of female participation in the sport.

Anzac Day Services are as follows. The Early Morning Service will take place in Bi-Centennial Park, Lakeside Avenue (beside the shire offices) beginning at 7am. A small informal service with a speaker from the local RSL. All welcome.

On the weekend just over 100 participants took part and – allowing the predicted weather – our organisers praised this figure as a success and the challenging conditions were not enough to dampen spirits of the riders.

The Anzac Day March will come down Hollonds Street, starting from the assembly point in Park Street, near the Police Station at 10:45am, but marchers should be assembled and ready to go at 10:30am. Whilst Hollonds Street will not be closed, traffic movement will be restricted as the marchers come down the street.

Social riding proved to be the most popular aspect with an endless stream of bike shuttles transporting riders to the top of Falls Creek’s mountain bike park trails across both days. Skills clinics and yoga sessions were other popular aspects that added to the amenity of the weekend.

The Commemorative Service will take place at the Cenotaph, beginning at 11am. The Motion of Loyalty will be offered by Councillor Tony Keeble of the Alpine Shire. Prayers will be led by Sister Eileen Reardon of the Catholic Church and the Guest Speaker on the day will be Flight L Richard Cornell ALTC Bandiana..

As well as the shuttles, Sunday featured a mass picnic ride to the grounds of the iconic Wallace’s Hut, one of the oldest cattlemen’s huts in the region built in

Many thanks to the fabulous event team at Falls Creek Resort Management who could not be more pleased with the event and are looking forward to staging its 5th year in 2020. Thanks also to the many volunteers who helped make the event happen. It is this community spirit that puts Falls Creek toward the top of the list for staging great fun and successful events. •

The address for the day will be offered by students from the Mount Beauty Secondary College. Speakers will be school captains, Katerina Trnka and Connor Vickers. At our local service, wreaths will be laid by many community representatives and members of the public are invited to do so if they wish.

ALPINE QUEST

Tests the Toughest

TA Life to Remember

ime seems to have flown since Falls Creek hosted the inaugural Alpine Quest Adventure Race over the Australia Day long weekend. Teams of four mountain biked, kayaked and trekked over a 150km course non-stop for up to 36 hours. The weather tested even the toughest of competitors as they endured extreme heat, and then an overnight change brought driving rain and wintery conditions.

The race attracted 29 teams with competitors arriving from across Australia as well as some international destinations. The race format was two stages. A prologue event was held in the Falls Creek village on Friday 25th January, followed by a linear course starting early the following day in which teams had 36 hours to reach the finish line.

Commencing at 12 noon, the afternoon will reflect Lyn’s enormous contribution to Falls Creek. Some wine and a light BBQ will be provided, but we ask that you bring other beverages and also a plate to share. In the case of wet weather, a contingency plan will be in place. During the hiking leg teams confronted sections of off-road hiking through abandoned walking tracks, along river beds and rough 4wd trails. The sunset was a welcome sight for all teams remaining on course with the temperature becoming more bearable, however the weather dramatically changed through the night and the heat was replaced with unrelenting rain, wind penetrating down to river canyons and requiring teams to make use of their mandatory equipment.

Dederang Races

Restaurateur Barry Iddles has come up with an event that will enhance the guest experience at the annual Dederang Country Picnic Race Meeting.

Iddles has borrowed an idea that has been very popular with racegoers at the annual Melbourne Cup Carnival. A Dederang-style Birdcage will accommodate approximately 150 punters dressed to impress. Access will only be permitted to those who pre-

As a result of extreme temperatures experienced last year, the meeting has been moved from its traditional first Saturday in January with this year’s Mount Beauty & District Community Bank Dederang Races taking place on Saturday March 16th.

Amy van de Ven, a member of the Dederang Race Club management committee said: “We’re super excited to be able to offer our race goers a fully cateredfor Marquee with such a fantastic offering. With the change of date to March we understand we are potentially targeting a new market of race goers that are looking for the catered option and it’s working with people like Barry who have an idea and being able to bring it to life, it’s something we are all very excited about.”

Amy added “We will still have all our usual activities such as Fashions on Field, our famous Mad Man’s Mile & the Tug-O- War competition at the end of the day. Then to compliment the day, the Dederang Hotel is having Danny Phegan & the Long Reach Band playing until late.”

Horses from throughout Victoria will compete in a six-race program including the feature event, the Milestone Dederang Cup. On ground food options, apart from

(at minimum) ski resorts offering about 100 ski lifts. Just sorting them out was a challenge – but frightfully rewarding. The residential area of Hakuba is at an elevation of about 700 metres (equivalent to the altitude of the Bogong High Plains Road as you enter Bogong Village). The tops of the mountains are in the area of 2300 metres (Mt Bogong is 1986m) with the tallest being around 2930 metres (but this peak did not have lifts). On average the ski area offered around 1000 vertical metres of wonderful skiing. During the time your Ed was there, we did not receive any fresh snow, but the skiing was still great with dry cold snow up the top.

As you walked around the village the Japanese drivers were courteous - slowing down to prevent splashing you as there is snow right throughout the village area.

Dining was fabulous and your Ed can report that in the whole stay, only one night was not Japanese food – it was take-away pizza with a Japanese theme.

Lachy Bowes, proprietor of Central Snowsports has three outlets in Hakuba and Scotty, the Hotham shop manager looked after our visiting skier – very much appreciated – with Central Snowsports providing a drop off and pick up service to many of the lodges.

All up – a fabulous trip and you don’t have to be Einstein to work out where your Ed will be next February. Cheers! •

We love to brag about locals doing great things, and Rachael Kable is no exception. Born and raised in our valley, Rachael has been doing some big things in the world of mindfulness.

ocal lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016. On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.

Her latest achievement is the release of her first book, also titled ‘The Mindful Kind,’ last Monday. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, pressured, anxious and disconnected, this book will change your life - one mindful step at a time. Rachael’s book is a guide to de-stressing and becoming happier by becoming more mindful in your everyday life.

MR: Is it excitement or are you nervous?

Ben: Yep, first overseas race, first EWS (Enduro World Series), so it’s going to be pretty exciting.

Kelly Gibbons from Wodonga Eyecare consulting at the new rooms in the Mount Beauty Medical Centre, Tawonga Crescent.

Ben: My first national year in 2015. I raced three events, Toowoomba, Adelaide, and Canberra and placed 3rd overall for the series. In 2016 I raced the Bright, Perth and Adelaide National series events winning all three and the U19 series overall. I then went on to win U19 National Champs in Adelaide (with a time that would have knocked Troy Brosnan off the elite podium).

Ben: I’m probably a bit more nervous than excited. Excited to race overseas, but nervous because it’s such a big event.

After heading to Melbourne to study a Bachelor of Psychological Science and her Graduate Certificate in Coaching and Counselling, Rachael started her very successful podcast, ‘The Mindful Kind,’ in 2016. Within a month, ‘The Mindful Kind’ podcast had reached number seven in the Australian iTunes charts and number 31 in the British iTunes charts, while receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews. In December 2018, The Mindful Kind reached a whopping three million downloads and continues to reach new people around the world.

Ben: I first met Chris at a Victorian Enduro state round at Barjarg, I was still like Under 15s or Under 17s and I knew that he was a fast dude. I wanted to hang out with the fast guys so I wanted to hang out with Chris Panozzo. I remember at Barjarg the shuttles were always a bit delayed, we were hanging out down the bottom for so long that we nearly missed our race runs. When we got to the top, everyone was wondering where we’d been. He was just like “Ah we’ve just been chilling at the bottom.” So that felt pretty cool.

FALL LINES

Shrove Tuesday

Shrove Tuesday (also known in Commonwealth countries and Ireland as Pancake Tuesday or Pancake Day) is the day in February or March immediately preceding Ash Wednesday (the first day of Lent), which is celebrated in some countries by consuming pancakes. In others, especially those where it is called Mardi Gras or some translation thereof, this is a carnival day, and also the last day of ‘fat eating’ or ‘gorging’ before the fasting period of Lent.

Locally Shrove Tuesday will be celebrated on March 5th with dinner at Tawonga Hall from 6pm. Cost: Adults $15. Primary kids $5. Per-school free. •

Teddy Bears Picnic

Under the auspices of Upper Kiewa Valley Regional Arts, a group joined together with a view to assist school age kids to further their musical aspirations. When Kitty Vigo heard about the group fund-raising to assist these kids she gave a very generous donation, explaining that her late husband David was passionate about encouraging young musicians.

The group then asked Kitty if the scholarship could be named after David and Kitty responded “He would have been thrilled” so the David Vigo Youth Music Scholarship was formed.

The Scholarship relies exclusively on fund raising, no grants and last year in excess of $4000 was raised with four events.

As a result the group were able to award $2300 in scholarship money to three of the applicants. On top of this, folk at the Conservatorium of Music in Albury heard of the scholarship and gave a master class award to each applicant.

The first fund-raiser event to be held in 2019 is the Teddy Bears Picnic on the 3rd March at Tawonga Park – which will be a free entry event. Coordinator Fay Mason said “Everything we’ve done so far has been adult events and it was time to do something that the kids could enjoy”

The committee has been working on making this a very special occasion. There will be a Sunday school picnic atmosphere, three races will be the sack race, the three legged, and the wheel barrow , there will be age group heats and lots of prizes to be given out.

ROAD

Kable from The Mindful Kind

Add to this a sausage sizzle, fairy floss machine, face painting and live music. So far the line-up is Smoke and Mirrors, Spooky Ukees, Dennis Cartwright, and last year’s winner Tamehana Pahina playing on his new keyboard that he was able to purchase with the prize money.

Karen Ziemnicki will be conducting a Yogi Bears discount shop where there will be lots of Teddy bear items for sale at low prices.

The main event will be the Teddy Bear Grand Parade, many categories on offer and the judges will be Megan Rigoni, Barb Talbot and Ellene Wood. So be sure and bring your favourite Teddy bear along with your picnic.

Future events this year will be a Disco, The Comedy Cup and a Big Quiz night.
