IThe National Gravity Enduro Series acts as the qualifying series for the Enduro World Series. See mention in the article with Ben McIlroy.
Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August.
The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.
n a non COVID-19 season, Spring is usually the tail end of the season, with plenty of deals to be had on accommodation, end of season sales on gear and plenty of sunshine to close out the season and finish off that goggle tan. Spring is the best time to come skiing for families especially. What better time of year to learn to ski, or squeeze in that last cheeky trip for the season. The sun is shining (generally), the kids have a hoot of a time – few if any complaints about being cold and the abundance of offers make it a compelling value proposition, whilst the runs are generally beginner friendly with fewer people than peak times. Then there’s the backcountry spring corn… Whatever you do decide to do, just don’t forget the sunblock and install the Sun Smart app! However, not this year!
BUT - if by the time you’re reading this

- a miracle has happened and the lifts are turning, then disregard my melancholy tone and get out there for some spring turns and celebrate. There would be nothing better than waking up from this nightmare and having 30 odd days of normal… well, as close to normal as life is going to resemble these days! (Note – it’s very hard to type with your fingers crossed…)
Spring at the resort is also the time when the community comes together in support of the many great causes, helping to raise funds for Leukemia research, with the ‘Light the Night’ campaign, or the SES BBQ on Grand Final day, the Ski Patrol raffles and fund raisers… or any reason really to get a crowd together and celebrate. Celebrate something…!
Which brings me to the footy. I’m a diehard Geelong Cats supporter – born and bred. To be a Cats supporter is to be the very definition of resilient. I’ve lost more bets on their performance in the finals than I’d care to remember, I’ve ‘donated’ cartons of beer to too many Richmond
Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Cost is $50 per day or $90 for 2 days. Go to www.bluedirt. com.au to book. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig
supporters and I’ve skied with members of the Cats footy team, here in Falls Creek – WAY too early in September, instead of holding the premiership cup. Just like I’m holding out hope to see the lifts turn and the resort full of people (any people really), I’m holding out hope that Geelong will provide a distraction from the noise of COVID-19 and erase the disappointment and frustration of losing another grand final. Well, I can dream!
No time to be smelling the roses during this weekend’s Gravity Enduro. Pic - Jiri Cech.
It would certainly be a great start to Father’s Day weekend if the Cats win on Friday night and provide another reason to celebrate and forget, for a minute, all the challenges everyone is facing during these incredibly trying times.
To all the Dad’s out there – have an awesome Father’s Day, if you’re ablecelebrate with your family (I would love to be able to say ‘and friends’) and remember the remarkable things, the little things, the things that matter most.
Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the set slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza.
Locate right beside the bottom station of Halley’s Comet Chairlift! Spend some time and take in the fabulous history that has earned this community so much respect!
And, talk to any member of our team about the rewards of volunteering in the Falls Creek Museum.

Any finally, a word of thanks and praise. The editor of this fine newspaper, through thick and thin, has not missed a beat in making sure the publication gets out into the community and a few local kids pick up a few bucks delivering it. Ken provides news, views and the occasional inappropriate joke (check out last week’s classifieds!!!). Ken Bell – you’re a legend and thanks for what you do for our community, our mountain and the Valley. You’re a true champion, who’s community spirit provides inspiration when our mettle is tested. Cheers to you Bellie and thanks.
Now, to those who can, if you can, get out there and hit the slopes…
Stuart Smythe, CEO Falls Creek Resort Management

This paper, and our contributors, are working extremely hard to be positive and care for the people in our community.
Some time back we mentioned mental health. If you have a tax problem – you go to the best tax agent. If your car blows up – you go to a very good mechanic. If you get lost – you would want the best SES personnel looking for you. Therefore, if you are feeling a little down – then you seek out the best advice possible.

With very little happening at Falls Creek this week, locals and the National XC team are taking advantage of snow, grooming, spring like weather and no crowds. Being able to get out and get a couple of hours of exercise in these pristine conditions must be very nice.
Speaking of spring, by the time you read this, it will officially be spring and we can start thinking about the best skiing conditions and arguably the best XC skiing in the world.
Very few places in the world offer the spring snow pack combined with the fantastic rolling terrain that Falls Creek’s backcountry has.
As they say every beach has its day but for the best off-piste skating I am yet to ski anywhere that matches our terrain and consistency of corn snow.

If you can't get off the mountain, or are finding it hard to get to the shops during lockdown, you can now order everything you need from the butchery online, and we'll deliver it to your door!
Simply head to the link below, fill out our online form and include all your contact details and any products you'd like to order.
Once we've received payment over the phone, your order will be on its way to you on your nominated delivery date!
Free delivery available to Falls Creek addresses on Wednesdays & Fridays. Mount Beauty, Tawonga South & Tawonga addresses on weekdays.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to give Will a call at the shop on 03 5754 1888. 211 Kiewa Valley Hwy, Tawonga South

After a couple of days of spring freeze / thaw the world is your oyster for back country skating - just leave early (but not too early) and follow the sun.
I tend to have two different plans when heading for a spring BC skate, either a longish tour, visiting huts or destinations like the Fainters or my favourite, skating for turns.
Grab a friend, some food, an older pair of skating skis and head off, popular longish skates include Spion Kopje, the Fainters, Mount Jim, a circumnavigation of Pretty Valley, or visit any of the Huts in the area.
My other plan of attack is skating for turns, a bit of experience and paying attention to the sun will direct you to some great descents with just enough softening effect from the sun to allow dreamy tele or parallel turns on perfect corn.
Favourite spots for turns are exploring around the Rocky Knolls especially heading back to Rocky Valley Dam, the backside of Mt Nelse and the glades off Langford’s Loop. Heathy Spur also offers lots of possibilities with many north facing glades heading down to Nelse Creek.

Tips for a successful BC skate.
❄ Pay attention to the weather, the days leading up to your trip and what is happening during the day, no one enjoys a slog through ankle deep mashed potatoes if you leave your run home too late.
❄ Use older gear, breakages can happen.
❄ A pair of older skating skis with a bit of side cut helps with the turns, non-racing poles with slightly larger baskets help if it gets soft.
❄ Older skating boots are softer and help with the tele thing, and if you have to walk a section it won’t matter.
❄ Sunscreen – of course, is a must!
Now get out and make the most of your two hours of exercise! •

Earlier last week, some of the figures being promoted around Shepparton were that nearly 20,000 people were confined to their homes, quarantining for about two week. Out of a population of some 69,000, that is a lot of people ‘out of action’ so to speak. Even if these figures were only half right, that would still be 10,000 people locked down. That’s a lot of people and a tremendous disruption to the proper functioning of the community. Getting food to people is a major problem and that is where Falls Creek comes in.
The Falls Creek Chamber of Commerce and its members have undertaken a food drive to assist with the current food and essential supply crisis currently unfolding in Shepparton.
Before the latest lockdown in Regional Victoria was announced on Saturday 21st August, lodges, cafes and restaurants across the mountain were stocked up and ready for a busy winter weekend. Following the lockdown announcement and guests having to leave the resort, there was an excess of perishable food in venues. As a result, the Falls Creek business community is donating food from its venues to the community of Shepparton to help alleviate the food and essential supplies shortage that has affected the regional city.
After a disastrous season 2020 with nothing happening – and season 2021 ‘going to the dogs’ with three lockdowns across

Melbourne and Victoria, the earnings of the operators have been decimated. But, the Falls Creek business community has ‘dug deep’ into the fridges and freezers and is donating a ‘truck load’ of perfectly good food to those in need in Shepparton
President of the Falls Creek Chamber of Commerce, Lisa Logan expressed concern at the current situation and our community’s desire to assist the regional city of Shepparton, “Falls Creek businesses are concerned about the current food shortage in Shepparton and saw an opportunity to provide direct assistance to that community in need.”
“Falls Creek has been well supported by regional Victorians who have been visiting the resort, enjoying the winter experiences,
and helping us to keep our venues and mountain open when Melbourne was in lockdown. At Falls Creek we know the importance of banding together as a community and helping out when we can.”
The food from Falls Creek operators was collected by Red Cross last Saturday and delivered to Lisa McKenzie at GVCare Lighthouse Projects in Shepparton for immediate distribution to the community. •

Firstly, we’d like to acknowledge the significant toll the Pandemic has taken on our community members and local businesses. We say thank you to the many hundreds of people in our Community who are already fully or partially vaccinated. Your vaccination protects more than just yourself; it protects our community, our children, our elderly, our friends and our vulnerable. It also protects the things we cherish such as our small businesses, health services, community services, sport and recreation.
Vaccinations
Vaccination is the way out of lockdowns and will lead to resumption of a more normal life. The vaccines are very safe and extremely effective. There is ample evidence from overseas, and now in NSW and Victoria,
that Covid-19 is rapidly becoming a disease of unvaccinated people. Fully vaccinated people are significantly less likely to have any symptoms, be hospitalised or die.
Community members can be reassured that our medical, nursing and reception staff have all been vaccinated, with either Astra Zeneca or Pfizer.
As a small, remote community we are particularly vulnerable to the effects of this Pandemic. Our community should be aware that if Covid-19 comes to our town, our hospital will not be able to manage anybody with flu-like symptoms, much less Covid-19. All unwell people will need to go to Albury, or beyond, for their care. Many of you will already know the significant toll this takes on our patients and their families.

There is no denying that the Pandemic is causing fear and anxiety and propagating distrust. This is a natural reaction to our current circumstances. We all have opinions on how hotel quarantine, lockdowns, closed borders and vaccination programs could have been run better. But we should try not to confuse these concerns with how the medical and scientific community agrees the virus should be managed.
We have become increasingly concerned about some of the information being shared, especially on social media. We acknowledge that most people only have the best intentions, but some of this information puts people at risk, especially vulnerable people.
One scientist or doctor may have an opinion and it may even be the opinion of some of their peers. But scientific evidence is not the opinion of one or many individuals. It is formed by extensive research which is rigorously scrutinised and then re-checked by independent experts.
We would encourage everyone to gather their advice from published, scientific evidence rather than opinions. If you feel strongly about sharing something, please consider sharing it privately rather than with the community. If you can’t verify that the information is accurate, even if it looks accurate, then please consider not sharing it at all. Misinformation is the enemy to beating Covid-19.
Our GPs have been asked almost any question you can imagine. Please make a time to chat with one of your trusted doctors, who will confidentially support you through these challenging times, without judgement. Please also consider booking your vaccine as soon as possible. •

Heart disease affects hundreds of thousands of people and their families in Australia so it’s very close to home for many of us.
Funds raised for the Heart Foundation have gone into some great advances including the development of the pacemaker, mobile intensive care ambulances, and the 000 number.
Therefore you are invited to join the relevant Resort Management personnel and other members of the community for a summer season debrief meeting. This meeting will take place on Wednesday 26th April from 9:30am to around 11:30am in the Boardroom above Foodworks in QT.
How can you help? Well, consider making a donation (and any donation is wonderful) to a participant via their fundraising page – this means you can sponsor any child’s efforts. Chelsea, Xander and Kirsten’s pages are:

Bill was happy to lend the book – until now when it has not been returned. This is a valuable piece of the area’s history and we hope this notice may prompt some-ones memory. Your Editor has purchased a digital copy from Melbourne University for reference, but we would love to have the original bound copy returned. Ph: 00400 350 488.

AFather, A Son, Two Fishing Rods in the Pond. The blokes standing side by side, silently admiring the peace and tranquillity of this stunning landscape in the late afternoon sun.
I wonder what stories they would be sharing; the joy of being together; the memories of special times shared together, as they basked in the last of the late winter sun.
Local hirer of steel Kwikstage SCAFFOLD

Happy Father's Day to all the blokes this Sunday, whether you be Fathers, Sons, Uncles, Granddads, Brothers and those no longer with us, as we are once again isolated from the ones that we love.
In the meantime, let's hope these two can reel in some mighty big ones!
In memory of my own late father and brother. • Elene Wood
