The National Gravity Enduro Series acts as the qualifying series for the Enduro World Series. See mention in the article with Ben McIlroy.
With COVID-19 consuming so much ‘headspace,’ you may have missed something just as important, in fact, more important in the long run. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Changes (IPCC) released its Sixth Assessment Report summarising the current climate research on how the Earth is changing as temperatures rise and what those changes will mean for the future.
Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August.
The science behind the report comes from 234 scientists. Like many academic disciplines, reports like this try to accurately capture points of both scientific agreement and disagreement. As the science is evolving, certain processes produce broad agreement, whilst other processes, the science is still emerging and there are strong, discordant views.
The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.
Which brings me to Pascal’s Wager. I wrote about this in 2019, to expose a decision

making process, founded on probability theory, a little decision theory thrown in, plus a healthy debate about God (or your chosen faith), and whether God is or is not.
The ‘Wager’ and logic behind it can be applied to the debate around climate change too.
The game of the ‘Wager’ asks humanity to analyse a position, where any action taken can be spectacularly consequential, but our understanding of those consequences is flawed, or imperfect.
In the ‘Wager’, the use of reason and logic justifies taking action and ultimately it makes sense to do so. But, without full and complete knowledge we are effectively forced to gamble (hence ‘Wager’)… Confused? What does this have to do with climate change?
Well, think of it this way. The debate and theories around climate change are nothing if not emotive, akin to talking about politics, where no one can claim, aside from their beliefs, to be necessarily
Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Cost is $50 per day or $90 for 2 days. Go to www.bluedirt. com.au to book. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig
OPEN FRIDAY AND SATURDAY ~ 12NOON TO 4PM
right or wrong, nonetheless everyone has an opinion!
So, if climate change does result in catastrophic global warming, the steps being proposed, and effort taken now to address it will be worthwhile. The consequences of not doing anything, given what we know, suggest it’s reasonable to assume forecast change will be disruptive, to say the least.
Therefore, reason suggests that any sensible person would decide to act. Much like the reasons behind why insurance exists, to parlay the risk.
Hence, the use of the ‘Wager’ principle to draw the parallel. To believe or not to believe… this is the question.
The premise of the wager, is that it triggers an individual’s subjective validation and cognitive bias. That means, a person will consider a statement or information if it has personal meaning or significance to them and they will ignore and dismiss information that conflicts with them.
Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the set slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!
Or… When the bright yellow flags are out – we’re open! Locate right beside the bottom station of Halley’s Comet Chairlift!
Spend some time and take in the fabulous history that has earned this community so much respect!
And, talk to any member of our team about the rewards of volunteering in the Falls Creek Museum.

Hence, the analogy to God and religion and Pascal’s original theory. Whether you can prove or disprove the existence of God, it would make sense to wager that ‘s/he’ does exist, because there’s a lot to gain if it turns out ‘s/he’ does and not much lost if ‘s/he’ doesn’t.
So, back to the IPCC report – it’s grim reading. But frankly, doing nothing on climate change isn’t an option. If there is a 1% chance that the planet is heading toward a truly major disaster and delay in our actions means reaching a point of no return, our inaction is reckless. There is no planet B. We must all play a part, even the smallest change contributes.
Skiduber.com.au – what is that you ask? We’ll the team at Feathertop Lodge, in 2019, launched a delivery service for the food they serve at their outstanding restaurant, for those who want an exceptional meal, but can’t be bothered going out.
Hence, they come to you.
The offering is extensive (all off the restaurant’s a la carte menu) and caters to all tastes (and allergies). There’s a choice of four starters, six mains, five sides, three desserts, three kids meal options, three twin share deals, plus an extensive drinks menu. All delivered to you! We had the Karaage Chicken starter, the risotto, the steak, sides of broccolini and fat chips, plus wine …all delivered in under 45mins, piping hot and all in recycled packaging. If you’ve had a big day on the mountain and those legs need a rest, give www.skiduber.com.au a go. If you need to stretch those legs, you can also do pickup.

Logic says – even if there is only a one percent chance of climate change, that is still enough reason to take action to prevent or slow climate change – to continue to enjoy what we have. Pic Chris Hocking

Falls Creek Resort Management has today announced the difficult decision to cancel the 2021 McKayos event, Australia’s most unique Mountain Bike race. The event was forecast to welcome over 400 racers from around Australia to challenge themselves on the iconic course with interest being sky high following the events postponement in 2020. The course is infamous in mountain biking circles as the only mass start event in Australia which sees racers battle head-to-head on snow, roads and trails. Racers drop almost exactly 1000 vertical metres from the Summit of Falls Creek to the finish line at Bogong Village over 15km from the start line.

Due to the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic causing uncertainty for organising major events and other external factors, Falls Creek Resort Management were left with no choice but to cancel the event again for 2021. Event Supervisor, Nick Buckley, explained the decision was both difficult and sad for the resort.
“Falls Creek Alpine Resort is devastated to have had to cancel the iconic McKayos MTB event for the second year running. However, with the continued government directed lockdowns affecting our ability to plan for a major event of this nature, as well as complicating our ability to safely transport over 400 riders to the top of

The interest in the McKaos has always been huge as this start shot from 2018 show. Let’s hope we can get it together for 2022. Pic – FCRM
the mountain, we have made the difficult decision to cancel this iconic event.”
“We know how disappointed our riders, stakeholders and community will be not to see the McKayos of the race unfold in our Alpine Resort. We want to thank all the racers, spectators and crew who have made the past iterations of McKayos so amazing, it’s been quite the ride!”
“Whilst racers won’t be able to get their wheels into snow this year, we’d encourage them to look ahead and book early for the Ignition MTB Festival taking place on November 19th – 21st. With three days of incredible shuttle riding, music, demos and amazing food & drink, it’s going to be

the ultimate way to kick start the summer MTB season in Falls Creek” •
This pic turned up on digital the other day and we just had to print it. It came from Brad Wilson who said “These were great times and a special part of my life. Working alongside these guys summer and winter was so much fun.” The photo was taken in 1994 and features, from left, Dougie ‘Cannonball’ Zollo; Jeff ‘Joffa’ Dixon; James Farley; Jim ‘Jimbo’ Holz; Ronald ‘Buzz’ Sault; Brad Wilson Junior; and Mark ‘Moustachio’ Davis – sometimes referred to as the ‘Magnificent 7.
This paper, and our contributors, are working extremely hard to be positive and care for the people in our community.
Some time back we mentioned mental health. If you have a tax problem – you go to the best tax agent. If your car blows up – you go to a very good mechanic. If you get lost – you would want the best SES personnel looking for you.
Therefore, if you are feeling a little down – then you seek out the best advice possible.

The guys worked as Ski Area Supervisors and Mobile Operators. Their roles would now be known as Zone Leaders.

If anyone has any other old shots of Falls Creek and the team, let’s see if we can’t print them and get a bit of history rolling. •

This week we are catching up with National Team Member Casey Wright, freshly minted National Sprint and Distance Champion. She is a valuable member of the staff at Falls Creek Cross Country and has been a member of the Australian National Cross Country Team since 2012. Casey represented Australia at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeong Chang and is hoping to go to Beijing for the 2022 Winter Olympics.
1. Cross country is a hard sport; why did you choose it?
Casey: why not? It’s a good challenge!
2. What’s your favourite place to ski overseas?

Casey: It would have to be Alaska, skiing at Turn Again Pass near Anchorage in the spring is pretty good.
3. Where’s your favourite race venue?
Casey: It would have to be Pragelato, in Italy, home of the cross country events for 2006 Turin Olympics.
4. What’s your favourite training workout?
Casey: I really like adventure workouts where I get to go explore and do something challenging, it pushes my comfort zone. Apart from that, it’s probably doing some sort of speed, downhill or agility drills, just having fun on skis without thinking too much. I try to do agility once a month on snow and then speeds most weeks. Adventure sessions are reserved for big volume weeks, where I need to

get a four or five hour session in; with long skis on and off piste.
5. What did you learn in the Pyeong Chang Olympics that will help you in next year’s Beijing Olympics?
Casey: If I qualify, I think it can be quite daunting skiing at such a big event with lots of media coverage and everything that comes with large events like the Olympics. For me it’s being able to take a step back and enjoy the moment for what it is, as again it’s just another ski race.
6. If you could have dinner with any person living or not, who would it be?
Casey: I want to say David Attenborough, I feel like he could have some pretty cool conversations
7. If you were trapped on a dessert island and could only take five songs with you, what would they be?
Casey: They would be 1955 by Hilltop Hoods, Clair De Lune by Flight Facilities, Outro by M83, Nice to be Alive by Ball Park Music and Dance to Joy Division by The Wombats.
Thanks Casey, good luck with your world cup events in the Northern Hemisphere and good luck qualifying for the Olympics, not that luck has anything to do with it, we know how hard you work. •

Particularly in these spring type conditions it is really important to consider the grooming when skiing later in the day. When the grooming machine heads out in the afternoon it puts heat into the already warm snow as it smooths and packs. As the air temperature has not yet dropped to zero it remains very soft, if people ski, particularly skate, straight after the grooming machine deep skate marks are left which then freeze and make the skiing the next morning diabolical to say the least. This frustrates the groomers who go to a lot of trouble to create a good skiing surface, and anyone trying to ski in the morning. Please avoid the freshly groomed snow in the afternoon and look for the trails groomed the previous night. •
Has returned again this year with no cost to the user, thanks to Falls Creek Resort Management.
If you go to the snow report page on the fallscreek. com.au website and next to the header that says Cross Country Status and click XC Tracker you will see what trails have been groomed in the last 24 hours. There is also a QR code in the windy corner building that links directly to the report. •

Ern Reeders spent some of his childhood in Mount Beauty and has spent the last 10 winters in the valley, coming up for its natural beauty and the chance to ski tour and telemark in the mountains. His interest in bird photography was sparked by seeing an explosion of Black Kites during a 'dry flood' in the Simpson Desert. Bird shooting he finds rewarding because it's challenging - taking gear, technique, patience and luck. Last year Ern won the Birdlife Australia Photography Award for the best bird in flight. He runs the Facebook group Birds of North-east Victoria and uses Nikon and Sony gear.

On the 18th August each year, Vietnam Veterans' Day is commemorated on the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966. It is an opportunity to remember the sacrifices of those who died and say thank you to almost 60,000 Australians who served during the 10 years of our involvement in the Vietnam War.
The Vietnam War was Australia's longest military engagement of the 20th Century. The arrival of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam in South Vietnam during July and August 1962 marked the start of Australia’s involvement in the war. By the time the war had come to an end,

almost 60,000 Australians served during a decade of conflict between 1962 and 1972. Tragically, 521 of them died and 3000 were wounded.
The Battle of Long Tan was a significant moment in Australia's war in Vietnam.
On 18 August 1966, in a rubber plantation near the village of Long Tan, Australian soldiers fought one of their fiercest battles of the war.
The men of Delta Company, 6th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment, faced a force of some 2000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops. The battle was fought in wet and muddy conditions during a heavy tropical downpour.

By the end of the day, 17 Australians had been killed in action and 25 were wounded, one of whom died a few days later. This was the largest number of casualties in a single operation since the Australian Task Force had established its base at nearby Nui Dat the previous April.

A celebration of Lyn’s Life will take place on Friday the 28th April 2017 in the Village Bowl at Falls Creek for anyone who wishes to attend and pay tribute. Commencing at 12 noon, the afternoon will reflect Lyn’s enormous contribution to Falls Creek.
