Getting out from behind the desk and experiencing the product is a critical part of any job. In my role, I’d say it’s vital. Unfortunately, it doesn’t happen as much as I’d like it to (particularly the skiing bit… yes really!).
Nonetheless, last weekend, off the back of the National Interschools at Perisher, I ventured over to join my family and took the opportunity to ‘mystery’ shop.
Whilst being quite familiar with the competition in Victoria, my ‘North of the border’ knowledge is limited in terms of experiencing what is on offer. I mean, with such a great product offering here, why would I need to go anywhere else in our Southern hemisphere winter? (gratuitous plug no.1)
I believe it is fair to say that the Australian ski industry offers a great product. We’d all love the resorts closer to home, the season

Resort Entry is located at Howman’s Gap, approx. 4km before reaching Falls Creek. Day and Night Passes are at $54 on arrival per day, (or $49.50 on line). If arriving after 5pm and departing prior to midnight on the same day, entry is free. Visitors over 65 years of age receive a discount.

Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August. The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.
Across all the mountains, the quality of snow for this time of the season is still exceptional. Granted, as it warms up a little, North facing slopes understandably will start to deteriorate and cover starts to get thin in places (But not here at Falls Creek, most runs are south/south west facinggratuitous plug no. 2).

Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig

Women’s Camp
The DWA Women’s Camp was an outstanding success last weekend, September 7-9. There was a mixture of Sit Ski, Skiers and the utilisation of a stand-up ski slider, plus laughter, fun, challenges and excitement - what more could you ask for? The Camp started with a mixture of women who had been with DWA in the past and others who had been on camps earlier this year. All had the common goal of wanting to enjoy the company, have a great time and achieve their personal best - and that they did. As usual with DWA, the day progresses and events that unfold are never what is expected.
With a combination of DWA guides and snowsports school instructors Tim and Erik, Stephanie and Katie were ripping up and down Drovers rollers and Ruined Castle on Saturday and Sunday. The smile on Stephanie’s face never disappeared.
Meanwhile Katie, who was with Jeff and Hans was progressing well in her sit ski. Amanda had also started off on Saturday in a sit ski and then decided that this was not for her. Braving the fact of having a prior injuries Amanda took to the slopes and progressed from Mouse Trap to Drovers on Sunday. Following her DWA Guides Katie and Siobhan, Amanda was able to link several turns and complete basic Christie turns allowing her to match the skis parallel after each turn. Not to be deterred by a fall that winded her, Amanda still got back up and continued down the run. Well done Amanda what a great effort.
The fun continued Sunday for Simone with DWA guides Jane and Corinne on the snow slider. After practicing on Saturday sliding down Mouse Trap it was time to have a slide down Wombats. For the uninitiated a Snow slider is a steerable stand-up ski device that has vertical twist of the cuff, forearm angle and speed control by tether adjustments for the Instructor or Guide. The Wombats run being a long run also included a rest
where the DWA guides brought along their own seat (orange crate) for Simone to rest. Getting on and off a lift is also a timed operation but one the worked perfectly for Simone, Kane and Corrine on the Halley’s Comet lift, something to see and be amazed at how it all works.
It was a great weekend for the Women’s camp congratulations to all participants and maybe next year it will be a weekly camp with planned events and improvements for all. Let’s wait and see.

Pretty Darn Good!
With less than four weeks until the close of season 2018, I’ve been taking some time to reflect on the last 13 weeks and wanted share with you some of my highlights.
Now nearly through my second season as General Manager of the Ski Lift company, everyone said at the end of last season ‘don’t expect every season to be like this’ as we exceeded the magical two metre mark, and made the call to extend the season for an additional week.
This season we started with grass on the ground and calls for snow dancing everywhere before Mother Nature came to the party and by the 15th June we had lifts turning and the village was full ski in ski out.
It was a quick ramp up with favourable snow falls, excellent snow making and lots of hard work, Summit opened on the 16th, Drovers on the 17th, including our smaller terrain park and by 22nd, we opened Eagle Express, Ruined Castle and Scotts, just in time for the weekend! We had 90% of our terrain open for school holidays and by July 10th International was turning, and it hasn’t stopped turning since, 63 days and counting!
The early lift openings off the back of a stellar season 2017 has meant that consumer confidence is high and season to date there’s been an additional 10% more skiers and boarders experiencing all that Falls Creek has to offer than last year, huge growth numbers off a big spike last year.
We’ve had more new skiers and boarders visiting our resort, more lessons taken than last year, and when we hit the two metre
mark for the first time early August – 2018 was one of only four other seasons in the last 31 years to have two metres of snow at that time in the season! We’ve already exceed last year’s ski in ski out record with 88 days so far (2017 was 82 days in total), and our village roads are still covered with snow today!
Nickelodeon came to play with delivering an exclusive southern hemisphere snow experience; we hosted the Snowsports Industry Australia’s on-snow demos where we saw some of the best brands in the industry showcasing their 2019 products and who could forget when the Today Show did their weekend broadcast from our fabulous village! Such a buzz!
With the countdown on to the end of the season, 2018 is certainly shaping up as one for the record books again – and as we enter our early bird season pass sales period, guests are showing their love for Falls Creek with early commitments to next year! My team will be painting the village purple every Saturday until the end of the season as we celebrate ‘Super HERO PASS Saturdays’ keeping energy high right until the end!

THE MCKAYOS
A Curious Event
McKayos is a curious event for an Australian ‘ski resort.’ Mountain bikes and snow are typically separate beasts so the concept to combine the two in a hybrid mountain bike race on snow is a unique idea to say the least. On October 6, 2018 – the final weekend of the snow season, at least 150 riders will take to the slopes of Falls Creek for the 4th, and biggest, event in the format yet.
McKayos takes a simple concept – putting a heap of riders on top of the highest driveable point in the country (Mount McKay Summit) and setting them all off in a mass-start race down the snowy peak. 22km away a finish line is set outside Bogong Jacks pub on the shores of beautiful Lake Guy in Bogong Village. In-between is a ski resort, national park, river crossing and hydro power plant to get through on two wheels and down 1209 metres of elevation.
The first two years of the event brought mixed results (sunshine and slushy snow then rain and slushy snow) but the event is riding on a massive high after perfect conditions in 2017 let the riders take off and race the way it was all meant to be. Last year’s event

saw blue skies, sub zero temps and a freshly groomed runway that could stand some hard treatment without riders breaking through the crust - it was almost poetic the way the planets aligned so perfectly.
2018 course from the same Ski Patrol Base starting point for this year’s event. Director of marketing and Communications, Jo Prothero, said the change was unavoidable but worked for the best.
“It was a tough call to take McKay out of McKayos but ultimately we had to do it for the good of the race. In changing the course we allowed for an earlier start time which is great to get a more frozen track, it also opens up racing on steep ski terrain that we’re otherwise unable to get to. Mt McKay will always be the spiritual home of McKayos but the new course is definitely a big improvement.”

The main change seen in 2017, however, was a happy accident on the back of unprecedented snow conditions. With too much snow to take riders to Mt McKay, Resort Management organisers were presented with the issue of digging a 2m trench for several kilometres or relocate the race from its traditional starting point. The race committee improvised and a new start line was set closer to home outside the Ski Patrol base. With the new starting point McKayos could now take in a course through steep groomed ski terrain and enter the village up high with nothing but gravity to get there. Taking 2017’s success to heart, and in consideration of the 1.5m+ base expected, Resort Management have set the

McKayos 2018 is already the biggest the event has ever been and has already registered over 120 riders four weeks out from the event. Anywhere from 150 to 200 competitors are expected to race which has seasoned competitors raring to go. Two time competitor and local mountain bike enthusiast, Eddie Wilson, said this year’s event is his most anticipated yet.

To have so many competitors this year is going to add an extra level of intensity and make it pretty entertaining! There isn’t any other race like this in Australia, it’s definitely my favourite on the calendar.”

David Rosendale
David is a Melbourne-based photographer. His work has been featured by major domestic and international brands, and featured in prestigious publications and awards such as the Australian National Photographic Portrait Prize. Rosendale was the 2017 recipient of Falls Creek Artist in Residency Grant, and works created during The Fall made the semi-finals in the Moran Contemporary Photography Prize.
David has recently held and exhibition at the Fox Darkroom & Gallery in Kensington, inner city Melbourne. Titled ‘The Fall 2017 – 2018’ the exhibition ran through the bulk of August.
David’s series ‘The Fall’ is an extensive 12 month photographic study of seasonal change and environment in the Alpine region of Falls Creek. It followed a 2016 exhibition of the same title which comprised imagery captured exclusively in minimalist snow-covered landscape. In February 2017, David was granted Artist in Residency at Falls Creek, embarking on a project that would document all four seasons and imbue the photographer’s role as observer throughout a year-long cycle of change.
David’s work seeks graphical and compositional harmony within the landscape. His artworks act as witness to the evidences human activity leaves upon it. He constantly wanders and explores the roads less travelled to find the next window on the world. Once a feel for a location is established, through careful planning and intuition, he ensures he is present at precisely the right moment, to allow the environment to reveal something unique to him and to the resultant image.
This weekend, David is bringing his work to Falls Creek. The exhibition will be held in the Alpine Room at QT (next to Bazaar) on the Slalom Plaza Level.
The Official Opening will take place this Friday evening, September 14th at 6pm and will run until about 8pm. The exhibition will then be open from 8am until 8pm on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th September. Nutritional Importance
This week I caught up with the current Australian National Team Nutritionist Sophie Stanwell. She is completing her degree at University of Canberra and has chosen to publish a thesis on Cross Country Skiing. To do this she has been working very closely with the Australian Ski Team here at Falls Creek! This last week the team has been staying at FCRM Horseshoe apartments and skiing for many many hours on the September Training Camp.
TW: “Who are you and what do you do?”
Sophie: “I am an Accredited Sports Dietitian and am currently studying the nutrition habits of the Australian cross country skiing team. I am enrolled in
a research degree at the University of Canberra and will be working with the national team for this winter season.”
TW: “Why did you choose to do your Honours on Cross Country Skiing?”
Sophie: “Cross country skiing is one of highest energy demanding sports through training/competition alone. Adding the complexity of training at altitude, in extremely cold weather and long overseas stints competing makes for a very interesting athlete subject group. To date there is no literature or description on what Australian cross country skiers do nutritionally to meet their training demands and remain healthy.”
TW: “What did you know about Cross Country Skiing beforehand?”
Sophie: “Nothing! I have learnt the sport from absolute scratch since beginning

this research study. I have had to learn everything from competition schedules, the different skiing techniques and of course the nutrition requirements. Now back at the AIS when I tell people about what I am researching, it reminds me of what I used to be like. Most people don’t really know what it is, one person asked if we go out for a few days and camp out on the snow, I said I think that is more like mountaineering.”
TW: “Having now tried it, what is the biggest surprise with the sport?”
Sophie: “The fitness required to ski for even one hour shocked me when I first tried cross country skiing in June this year. I am quite fit myself being a competitive 200m track runner and was completely out of breath after an hour on the trails. The amount of upper body work required also was a shock!”
TW: “What data analysis have you done with the National Team this winter?”
Sophie: “Food diaries, the amount of energy expenditure burnt daily and for

the different training sessions. Hydration monitoring and also the knowledge and perspectives the athletes have about nutrition for their training.”
TW: “After receiving this data, what is the biggest area for improvement with the skiers?”
Sophie: “Carbohydrate! It’s difficult to get the amount required for the intensity and volume of training they do.”
TW: “Now some info for the people: what are your three main fuelling tips for recreational skiers? Like going out for a three hour ski - think 40-60yr old people?”
Sophie: :I would suggest fuelling up with a high carbohydrate meal about four hours beforehand - this might be a small bowl of porridge with some toast with honey/jam, add some nuts or yogurt to your porridge if you get hungry out on the course quickly. I would definitely recommend taking some carbohydrate containing snacks with you. This could be a muesli bar, breakfast bar, dried fruit, biscuits or some lollies. Fluids wise I would definitely be taking a fuel belt with you full of water or sports drink if you don’t enjoy eating out on the trails. If you wake up the day of going skiing and you suspect you’re dehydrated or have dark urine, have a 500ml drink of sports drink, hydrolyte or milk to rehydrate. After your ski, I would suggest something that contains protein, fats and some carbohydrate. This could be eggs on toast, yogurt with fruit and nuts or a meat/cheese and salad filled sandwich.”

It’s Time To Vote!!!
Pick My Project is a $30M online community grants program that gives Victorians the chance to suggest project ideas and then vote to decide which ones are funded.
This is a Victorian-first community grants initiative, with at least $1 million in funding available in each metro and regional area. It is the first program of its kind in Victoria, offering Victorians an opportunity to make their community an even better place to live.

Falls Creek Public Art
Falls Creek has always been an artist’s haven, supporting artists’ camps, exhibitions, comedy, film festivals and the new community Museum. Following consultation in 2015, the Board adopted an Arts Strategy in 2016 to build community resilience in the face of climate change, which will substantially impact our winters as early as the 2020’s. The Board’s community-based arts committee introduced an Artist-In-Residence Program in summer 16-17 and is now keen to commence work on the next big idea, a major public art commission in the village which will invigorate economic development in the region by attracting new green season visitation. The Rain Maker
The Rain Maker is an important arts and health production for youth suicide prevention and youth mental health care. The Rain Maker is designed to entertain and educate youth audiences around a range of issues relating to youth mental health care. Set in a football club, The Rain Maker portrays the struggles of two young players and the support shown by their coach. The play will be work shopped and rehearsed in Mount Beauty with director John Wood and performed as a free community event in Mount Beauty, Bright, Benalla, Wodonga, Wangaratta and Shepparton. Symphony of Life is a live theatre performance employing comedy, pathos, music and dance to portray the cancer journey. Starring acclaimed actor John Wood, Symphony of Life is a free community event paying tribute to leading cancer support group Brave Hearts on the Murray. AUSTRALIAN INTERSCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS
students put in their very best effort and had a lot of fun, and there were also some excellent results.
The GS and Boarder X were held on first day with sunny conditions making the snow quite slow. In the GS our boys team finished 7th overall with Hamish Wilkinson having the fastest time and taking out the individual bronze medal. Girls’ teams of Ella, Lily, Ammy and Issy also had a great result finishing in 8th place. In Boarder X, Div 4 boys Alex, Madox and Ben all had solid runs, with Alex finishing in 6th place and the team finishing just out of the medals in 4th. Jacinta Jansen also had an excellent Boarder X result finishing in 9th place overall.
The second day was Skier X and Moguls. The forecast was for heavy rain, and it arrived at lunchtime, just in time to make a very soggy Moguls event. Ella Green was

the only Div 4 girl in the Skier X event, and she finished in 18th place with boys’ team of Louie, Hamish and Alex finishing 8th as a team. In the girls Moguls event Issy Bond had the best result, finishing in 6th place on a steep and intimidating course. Team-mates Ella and Skye also had good runs putting their team in 6th overall. Div 4 boys, Louie, Hamish and Alex finished in 5th as a team in a very strong field.
The final day was the cross country events in the morning and Board GS in the afternoon. We had two strong teams in the cross country events and despite the warm conditions and very soft snow everyone put in a massive effort. In the mass-start there were a few technical problems with skis coming off and a massive stack just after the start which saw two thirds of the field in a giant pile of arms, legs and skis. Our Div 4 boys got tangled in the crash finishing 8th as a team, but Div 4 girls, Ella, Ammy and Issy had better luck and Ella had a strong race taking out the gold medal, with the three girls finishing in the silver
medal position. The girls continued their excellent form in the relay, finishing in 2nd place again. Special mention goes to Lexie Grayling, who is only in Grade 2, but who managed to complete the gruelling course with a smile on her face and a fantastic attitude despite several falls (including one when she was distracted by the crowd!).
In the afternoon only three boys remained for the Board GS event. It was a tight course on soft snow, and our boys, Madox Grayling, Alex Smythe and Ben Weir finished the event in champion style. Madox pulled of a magnificent performance to take out the bronze medal, with Alex in 6th place and Ben not far behind, but the best news of all came at final presentations when the three boys found they had taken out the gold medal as a team!
Overall our team finished in 5th place in the primary school division. Many thanks go to our fantastic group of parent helpers for all their support and also to Carol for all the organisation that goes on behind the scenes.

And Its People
The Dederang Mount Beauty Football Club has had one of its best seasons in years, finishing with nine wins, nine losses and only just missing out on the finals. It’s been an incredible turn-around for the club, and critical to that success has been new recruit Patty Stow, vice-captain of the senior team.
Patty grew up in Kancoona, a small locality to the west of the Kiewa Valley. He played most of his junior footy there, starting at the age of ten, or as he describes “when my mum eventually allowed me to play football.” As a kid, Patty hung around the football/netball club so much that he actually played a year of netball first, before joining the football team. He says it’s a story no one really forgets, though he doesn’t hesitate to share it.
Halfway through this year players were already signing on for next season. Patty hasn’t signed anything as yet, but he assures me he’ll be there.
As a wingman, Patty is compact, fit and incredibly skilful on both sides of his body. I’ve watched a number of their games this year, and he’s been one of the most consistent competitors, although his blonde hair and number 1 jumper might just make him easier to spot.
He went to school in Wodonga where he won a number of premierships playing in the school team. He was footy-mad as a teenager, obsessed with the game, playing and watching it. Now 23, Patty is studying physiotherapy in Thurgoona, living in Albury, and working part-time at Bunnings in Wodonga. He didn’t play football at all last season, and the year before managed only two games because of injury, and admits that footy “had become a bit of a drag.”
The return to the game was thanks to a family connection. Head coach Jack Neil, a family friend, invited Patty to do a pre-season and join the team. Now, 18 games for the Bombers later, he couldn’t be happier with the season. “This year has been awesome. It’s been so much fun.”
And there’s a lot to be optimistic about. Last season the club managed only one win, so the improvement has been drastic.
As vice-captain, Patty works with the captain and leadership team to make sure everyone understands their roles and makes it easier for some of the younger players, the 18- and 19-year olds, to ask questions and be heard. He’s serious about competing, but approachable and knows that playing footy is ultimately about having fun.
It’s obvious Patty has a good footy brain. “What makes a good footballer?” I asked. “I think confidence is important. But you think of a good footballer and so many come to mind that have different traits. You don’t have to be the strongest or most skilful player, but if you can stay composed and have confidence, that puts you a step above everyone else.”
This season has instilled a confidence in the club that hasn’t been there for years. There is now an expectation that the team will win, or at least be competitive in defeat. Only two of this year’s losses were big, and many others were winnable. Despite the relative success, Patty says the season feels incomplete because they missed out on playing finals by only one game, but that’s

just made the team more motivated for next season. The feeling is upbeat, with plenty of reasons to be confident.
There’s a lot to love about football when your team is winning. Patty agrees: “It’s hard to say what’s so good about footy because the two hours on game day goes so quickly and it’s very competitive. But when you win, the feeling afterwards when you’re together with your mates, it’s really enjoyable. The group having a common goal - then achieving that goal - is an awesome feeling. The mateship is great.”

It is with a heavy heart that this paper has the task of informing the community of the passing of Eric Hymans. After launching a book on his life during the Summit Masters last weekend, Eric passed away peacefully in his sleep.

and emotional life. Eric was a trailblazer during the birth of freestyle skiing in the 70s with deep Falls Creek roots. His father Bob Hymans built the first chairlift at Falls Creek in the fifties and pioneered skiing as we know it today.
The book – ‘Born to Fly’ by Peter Corney - details the pioneering days of Falls Creek and the 80s boom when Eric won two Australian mogul skiing championships. Eric is an important historical figure who was instrumental in the legend of Team Red and Falls Creek freestyle history. If you haven’t seen it already, the book can be found online.
There will be an intimate family gathering on Saturday night at a venue to be determined for friends who knew and loved him. Local Sabrina Spano
Meet local big mountain snowboarder Sabrina Spano. Sabrina’s love for snowboarding began when she was a child visiting Falls Creek with her parents. Those family holidays sparked her desire to spend as much time at Falls Creek as possible, and in 2001 she became a ski and snowboard instructor. She enjoyed teaching people how to ride for three years and began to venture overseas to experience different mountains. During her time here at Falls Creek Sabrina has worked at various lodges and restaurants and since 2014 has been capturing your precious holiday memories for Top Shots Photography in Cloud 9. Each year, as the snow season winds down in Australia and most Victorians set their sights on beaches and summer fun, Sabrina is packing her bags and preparing to chase the winter overseas. She heads to North America to compete in the Freeride World Qualifier Circuit, where she rides steep faces, narrow chutes and technical lines.
So what is Freeriding? There’s no slalom poles down the mountain or artificial jumps or halfpipes. And there’s certainly no groomed slopes. There’s a start gate at the top and a finish gate at the bottom and that’s it. Best run down wins. It’s all about picking the best line down the mountain over cliff faces,

through tight chutes and rocks.
In September of last year Sabrina was chosen to compete in the first ever Buller X, where 16 elite skiers and snowboarders from around the country took on the challenge of Mt Buller’s steep and treacherous chutes. This year Buller X has gone international and 20 of the world’s best big mountain skiers and boarders will compete for the title. Sabrina has been lucky to secure a spot in the line-up and is looking forward to tackling the infamous ‘Chute 3.’
The Buller X is held on some of the most extreme terrain Australia has to offer. Because of this an exact date for this year’s competition has not yet been set. Conditions have to be just right in order to allow the athletes to tackle the mountain safely. Nature chooses the exact date the event will be held, however the contest is set to run in the next couple of weeks.
Of course, no professional athlete in the snow sports arena can manage a season of competition on their own.
