More Than Meets The Eye
Spring is here. Blue skies and crisp, clear, cold nights help greet every morning with the knowledge that first tracks will occur on pristine corduroy, whilst the afternoons will deliver ‘spring powder’ and après sessions in the sun. A goggle tan is a ski holiday badge of honour!
Now, depending on when you are reading this, there are still 30-31 days remaining in what has been a cracking season. We’ve had it all… super dry powder snow, groomed runs to perfection and now spring corn condition on a snow pack that has been one for the record books.
So, this week’s article is a call out to the army of people, some on the front line, but many more who you don’t see, or maybe don’t want to see, but nonetheless work
tirelessly, all season long to make Falls Creek Australia’s Premier All Seasons Alpine Resort.

TIn no particular order, but with equal thanks and grateful appreciation: ski patrol, snow groomers, snow makers, lift ops and towies, outdoor crews, childcare, ski instructors and ski school teams, the tradies (of all sorts), guest services volunteers, visitor information teams, the retail and rental store operators, transport, over snow and freight, the rangers, chefs, restaurant staff and owners, the lodge and accommodation owners, cleaning and back of house crews, the garbo’s, the waste water treatment guys, the administration teams, events and marketing specialists, the team at DWA and the YMCA, the ambos’, doctors, CFA, SES, the coppers… I think you get the picture. Resort Entry
Resort Entry is located at Howman’s Gap, approx. 4km before reaching Falls Creek. Day and Night Passes are at $54 on arrival per day, (or $49.50 on line). If arriving after 5pm and departing prior to midnight on the same day, entry is free. Visitors over 65 years of age receive a discount.
Season Passes are available at $525 (or $450 on line).

GRAVITY ENDURO NATIONAL SERIES
he National Gravity Enduro Series acts as the qualifying series for the Enduro World Series. See mention in the article with Ben McIlroy.
Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August. The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.
All these people, numbering in the thousands contribute to ensuring that a visit to Falls Creek (and the journey here) builds not just life long memories, but a love of our mountain, the outdoors and snow sports. If you come back in summer, you’ll get just as hooked… trust me.
At Falls Creek we take much pride in recognising and appreciating how fortunate Australia is to have our ski resorts. In fact (well dubious… but), the Australian Snowy Mountains, or the High Country as we prefer to call them here in Victoria, receive more snow than Switzerland! Yep – tenuous fact – google it. (Of course, we are using this comparison for illustrative purposes only and are referring to the land mass area not necessarily the volume).
In any case, being able to ski (in and out) in one of the most unique and stunning landscapes in Australia, certainly capable of rivalling many of those elsewhere in the world, but topped off with our snow gums and stunning Alpine village, with a bit of good old Aussie hospitality thrown in, is, and I think you’ll agree, pretty darn good… therefore, to all our guests and visitors, we thank you too.
Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Cost is $50 per day or $90 for 2 days. Go to www.bluedirt. com.au to book. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig

Guide’s Missing Skis
A guide came up to me on Saturday morning and mentioned that his skis had gone missing after leaving them on his snowboard a week earlier. All DWA searched high and low but no skis. All the guides then proceeded up the mountain to be dropped off and the guide borrowed a pair from the DWA store. When I re-joined the group, the guide had found his skis. They had been sitting outside for two weeks in the snow at Falls Creek!

THE SUMMIT MASTERS
Returns This Weekend
The Summit Masters is a freestyle mogul event which has had a long history. It ran for 10 consecutive years from 1985 through to 1995 and inspired generations of freestyle mogul skiers. The event was the brain child of Linny Grosse, who was a Falls Creek local and Freestyle champion. Katie Steven, (who grew up in Falls while the family ran Pretty Valley Lodge) is a close friend of Linny’s and explained recently that she was the visionary behind the event and her drive was to create a world class Freestyle mogul event in Australia that was equal to or better than those in which she had competed in overseas. In the early days of Freestyle Mogul competitions, the moguls were ‘natural’ which meant that they were made simply by skiing the intended course. Each competitor needed to choose where on the course they would do their two areal tricks which added challenge and spectacle to the event. The Summit Masters prided itself with having the best natural mogul field in Australia, due in part to the perfect pitch, the fall line and the quantity of local mogul skiers creating it. During the
Summit Masters competition, technique, speed, adherence to the fall-line, two dynamic air tricks as well as the competitors own personal interpretation of The Summit run were all taken into account in judging the true mantel of Summit Master male, female and junior champion.
• The shape of the event is true to its roots with natural moguls being skied in three days before. The start will launch in the traditional spot just below the Summit rock. The finish will be on the race line.
• We will have five age divisions (for both male and female), an overall Male and Female winner and best retro outfit and competitor Male and Female.
• Breakfast for competitors only will be supplied by Frying Pan - the long-time base camp for the Summit Masters.
• New in the equation is a night event GS that is scheduled for the Saturday evening on The Slot – 7pm – 9pm. Once again four age categories and overall Male and Female.
• Saturday night with Kenton Ford DJing at the Frying Pan will drive the vibe prior to the event with tunes, themes and ‘dirt-bag’ ski movies that capture the time and era of Summit Masters.

Thank you once again for holding another successful ‘Light The Night’ event to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation! It was mentioned that Vesna and Stuart had the whole crowd captivated and the report came back that the event raised $3000 which is another fantastic outcome. The Loop Challenge
Winter is a busy time in the valley, and with it comes the challenge of maintaining good mental health. Regular exercise is proven to help and as a result Glenyse and Brian Peacock and Meredith Iaria have decided to ride in the Sydney to Dubbo ‘Zoo 2 Zoo’ in October and raise funds and awareness for the Black Dog Institute. No not everyone wants to ride 430km but we would like to invite everyone to join us on for a week of riding, starting 14th Sept 2018 (R U OK Day) to ride the Mount Beauty Damms Road Loop as many times as you can, to improve your health and the health others at the same time. All funds go directly to Black Dog Institute, you can even ask people to sponsor you per loop. Just get outside and enjoy this beautiful valley. It’s not about speed, just consistency.

Another Great Event
Well done to all who ventured out last Saturday for Telemark Nordic Ski Club’s Snow Trek & Travel Mini Series #4. The weather for our final event did not live up to our usual of blue skies and sunshine but nevertheless we had a great race day.
Telemark would like to thank those who participated in one or more of this year’s Mini Series events, we hope you’ve ‘caught the bug’ of cross country skiing!
Thank you to all who have assisted us during the season with setting up, bib collection, drinks and packing up. Your help has been greatly appreciated and has helped make the Mini Series possible. Massive congratulations to those kids who have taken on the role of officials during the adults/open Mini Series events! Your efforts and willingness to help has allowed your parents to join in on all the fun also!! So on behalf of all the adults “thank you kids! Job well done!”
At the completion of the races on Saturday, the presentations were held in the Nordic Bowl for this season’s Snow Trek & Travel Mini Series. Each participant receives a special and unique diploma and those completing all four events received a special Telemark Nordic Ski Club medal. Congratulations must go to the 11 children and two adults who completed all four Snow Trek & Travel Mini Series events for 2018.

Race Season Recap
The racing season down under has come to a close, there have been many races, some small (like Ronice), some large (like Phil Bellingham), and some medium sized (like Ken Bell). There have been heaps of people getting amongst it this winter. I don’t want to speak for everyone but I reckon many goals were ticked off, whether that be getting involved in more club races, finishing the 21km Birkie or qualifying for the World Nordic Championships in Seefeld, Austria 2019. I’ll do my best to cover some highlights from the Australian Race season. Mostly about the national team.
National Junior Team
From the three weekends of National level competitions (one being junior champs) there have been plenty of fresh faces qualify

for the Junior National Team, and of course many athletes requalify. To qualify for the Australian junior ski team you need at least two results where you come 10% behind the best junior in a distance race or 7.5% behind in a sprint race. Nic Blackwell was undefeated in all distance races for the juniors with hot rod Will Middlemiss claiming the Junior Sprint title. Emily Champion had another very strong season taking out the sprint title with Darcie Morton and Phoebe Cridland good in the distance events this year. Juniors new to the team include Fedele de Campo, Declan Burke, Hugo Hinkfuss, Will Middlemiss, Tommy Hoogenraad and for the girls, a Norwegian girl (who has an Australian father Lee Bygraves - who has represented Australia at two World Championships) qualified by the name of Tuva Bygrave, next to Tuva was Brianna Oldis and Rosie Fordham. The best thing is, you can meet all these lovely people and the rest of the team including myself at the AUSXC Season Launch party in Melbourne on the 12th of October (see below for more details).

Senior Team
The season was a little different, a little bit unusual for the seniors this race season down under because we had two big dawgs Phil Bellingham and Callum Watson who has publicly retired from proper ski racing however still raced all season because, I guess they just love it - can’t get enough of it. Phil and Callum kept the level nice and high, Callum winning the 15km skate in Perisher and Phil winning the 10km Classic in Falls and the Sprint in Perisher. Valerio Leccardi, also a retired athlete as we all know won the Kangaroo Hoppet. In terms of qualifications, Mark Pollock and myself A qualified for the World Senior Champs in Seefeld, Austria 2019 with Liam Burton close with a B qualifier from his two distance events. The three of us lads also qualified for the Davos World Cup in Switzerland which will be in December. Among the women, Barbara Jezersek remained a dominant force across all competitions as she managed to find time away from her coaching job in Perisher to compete and win the Aus distance champs as well as the Hoppet for a second time. Where to now?

a Junior Team Tour in preparation for the World Junior Championships which will be held in Lahti, Finland mid/late January, the juniors will be in Davos as will the senior team who will be led by Coach Valerio Leccardi, aiming at U23 World Championships and the Senior World Championships in Seefeld, Austria in late February. New coaches have been appointed to lead these trips, Callum Watson and partner, Swedish Teresa Riman will be taking charge of the Juniors in Davos, whilst Phil Bellingham and partner, French Iris Pessey, will be leading the younger juniors in Canada. I suppose the formula is Ex Olympic Skier accompanied by foreign girlfriend. I’m excited to see how the new coaches go as I reckon they will do a really good job, fresh - straight out of the game I’m sure they will have lots to offer.
Prep
The team has a senior team camp this week at Falls Creek staying at the lovely Horse Shoe Apartments (courtesy of FCRM). The Juniors have a training camp a couple of weeks later staying at Howman’s Gap and well, apart from that, like everyone out there, we are just training away at our respective locations. Remember, the key is to be smart and keep it ski specific this time of year.

Linny Grosse was born in Sydney in 1961 to a lower middle class family with one brother two years older.
In 1969 the family moved to Adelaide, living not fat from school and near the beach – what a joy! She gained good grades at school and, as an active kid took to gymnastics and trampolining – building a foundation for what was to follow.
With other kids riding skateboards, Dad, being excellent in mechanics and anything he could put his hands to, helped Lin turn her ‘dodgy’ old roller skates into her first skateboard!
In 1975 skateboarding was being revived from the 1960s era. Lin entered the South Australian championship and won! A small team of skateboarders was formed with the sponsorship of a local skateboard/surf/ snow ski company, and two high-profile USA champions arrived in Australia to promote the sport. Our team was invited to accompany them on the tour of schools,
shopping centres, and so on. A month or so after they departed, Lin returned home from school where she found her parents in deep discussion and a telegram inviting her to the World Invitational Skateboard Titles In Los Angeles, USA!
Lin was aged 14, in 1976 it was a big decision for her parents to give permission for her to attend – but they did – and she won! She was nicknamed the ‘Little Dark Horse from Down Under.’
Linny returned from three months in California with a broken thumb, but also with an interest in surfing, as all of her skateboard mates were also surfers. So, while she fulfilled her skateboard tours, she took up surfing, and within a few months had won the South Australian Women’s surfing title!
A suggestion from her sponsors “that snow might me a good idea” and Lin arrived in Falls Creek in 1978 to work – having never seen snow before. This is Linny’s story from here on!
Thus began another ‘chapter of life.’ There were no handouts or free rides. So I worked many casual jobs, such as housekeeping, shovelling snow, baby-sitting and cooking. I still allowed several hours in the day to snow ski. I was blessed with amazing balance, and within a few months I was performing somersaults on my trusty second-hand skis.

Unbeknown to me, it was apparently quite an extraordinary feat!
So my freestyle snow ski journey commenced. I had saved my frugal income all my life, and after my second Australian snow ski season, I travelled to France with my friends to do my first European winter. With my snow ski mates we pooled our money to eat well and we ski-ed all day in the Swiss Alps at the highest altitude. Those mates are still my best friends to this day.
In those days we had no official or supporting government organisation for our ‘crazy antics’ of Freestyle Snow Skiing.
There was no sponsorship. I had to find a bit ‘extra’ to compete in the Europe and World Cup competitions that were held in various countries. Having won several Europe and World Cup titles I made a pledge in 1985 to create a platform for the youth who were following in our ‘snow steps.’ I did not want them to have to endure the hardships to succeed in this newly recognised sport. A few good mates and I put together the first only mogul snow ski event at Falls Creek, Victoria in 1985. This event was named the

Summit Masters. I was the co-founder with so many lessons to learn about the corporate world. It became the foundation of what is now an Olympic sport, along with BMX, skateboarding and surfing. These are all acknowledged now as ‘extreme sports.’ How I wish I had been born 20 years later!
After ten years of officiating at the Summit Masters event, my little body was aching, and I did not like being cold. In 1995 I bought a one-way ticket to Cairns. Although I had travelled the world, I had never been to Queensland. Between my many winters I had always managed to meet up with friends in South East Asia, and spent that time sailing on the big blue ocean. On arriving in Cairns I jumped on a bus with my one small bag, and once we hit that curvy road north, all my fibres tingled. “Yes - Yes, this is where I want to be.”
That was about 23 years ago and Lin called the Port Douglas – Cairns region home –working on boats and diving on the reef. Lin passed away earlier this year.

The Summit Masters is the only Australian skiing event that has run without missing a year since its inception. Lynne, who ‘bailed out from the freestyle bureaucracy to set up the Summit Masters’ is an organiser who works off rapport and respect. She was world skateboarding champion at the age of 14, won two South Australian surfing titles and took up skiing at the age of 16. She became the first Australian woman to pull off the backward somersault and won the Australian freestyle championships. •

Past Mongan’s Bridge on the back road along the river, I met Rob Clutterbuck on his property where he keeps cows. Rob is the president of the local Parish Council of the Uniting Church on Hill Street, Mount Beauty.
I’d wanted to interview a local church minister for a while now, since I’ve always seen the church in three contradictory lights: as an aged institution drifting into irrelevance; as a historically meaningful place that links us back to our heritage (even if you don’t go to church, it’s likely your grandparents did), and; thirdly,
as a modern social organisation that is the largest non-government provider of community and health services in this country.
Rob is not a minister, but has been part of the Uniting Church his whole life, and the parish council manages the administrative requirements of the church and its various outreach projects.
Rob’s family, the Clutterbucks, have a long history in the Upper Kiewa. His grandfather owned property in the valley before World War One saw him sent to France, where he suffered a horrific head wound. Although he returned to farming, the injury was permanent, and he sold

Later, in 1950, Rob’s father bought property next door to where we were sitting, and Rob was born only a few kilometres down the road. As a kid in the 1950s, Rob remembers attending church services with his family at the Mongan’s Bridge school, where the caravan park is now. From the start, he was drawn to the church.
In high school, the minister at the time, Max Finley established a 40-strong youth group in Mount Beauty. Most of Rob’s mates from those days have since left the valley, as farms got larger, the farming population effectively halved. Today, the church congregation is mostly an older generation of approximately 30 locals.
Rob never left the Valley, however, and continued farming. While working at a coffee shop in Wodonga organised by the church, as an adult, he met Cheryl. Cheryl was part of the God Squad, a Christian motorcycle group from Melbourne. Despite guffawing at the clipped syllables of Rob’s surname, the two fell in love, got married and raised four children.
In the late 1980s Rob felt his Christianity so strongly he applied to become a minister. He travelled to Melbourne to face a selection board, and despite stating he had suitable qualities and qualifications to be

a minister, they didn’t believe that this was his path. Rob mused over the decision for a couple of week, then moved on.
This was all before he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. The symptoms had started in 1980, however it took 13 years to have his condition confirmed. As the disease progressed it affected him physically and cognitively, and he now admits that group discussions can be difficult to keep up with. Today, he sees his MS as a blessing. It’s impacted his ability to work, but it’s enabled him to see other people differently. The illness confronted him and made him grow. It humbled him, forcing him to rely on other people more. He says he’s become a better person because of the struggles he’s had. He admits that it’s embarrassing – horribly embarrassing – but he’s still got to show his face, he says matter-of-factly, laughing.
And his illness hasn’t lessened his dedication to the church and its work. The congregation has a busy outreach program, actively supporting the Centre Against Violence in Wodonga, North East Health, Women for Women in Africa, the Care Van in Albury, the Samaritan’s Purse, as well as operating the op shop on Hollonds Street. For Rob, the role of the church is to make God relevant to people. “People like to have a God that they can understand, but God’s too big for any of us to understand, so my thing is to keep people open to new

The “new expressions of God” Rob talks about are accepting people’s differences. He doesn’t believe everyone must conform to a certain set of rules and expressions of how we act and react to things. For him, people are made differently for a reason. He believes the Bible was written in a different culture to ours, and it won’t work to recreate that culture today, but rather to allow the Bible to speak new things to each generation.
As we were concluding our discussion Rob recounted a story of seeing a man propose to his girlfriend at a beach not long ago. He said that everyone around lit up when they saw it, and even if no one acknowledged it, God was at work in that moment, because love was there. “Until we can see that love is there in all places, at all times, we have a lot of growing to do.” • Struan Jones
