Better Than Average…
With snow falling at the proverbial ‘rate of knots’ the snow base is well above the thirty year average for this time of the season. Now, with what has been predicted at the time of writing, you may need a snorkel out there!
In fact, the current base (141cms and climbing) is already beating total snow fall maximums in 17 of the last 30 years… so the outlook for skiing and boarding for the remainder of the season is excellent. Particularly since peak snow depth has been recorded on or about August 29th for the last 30 years. Of course, in 2017 the Blizzard of Oz 3.0 hit on September 8th - creating a near record 217cm base (cumulative season total of 475cm).

Whilst we are having a ripper season with snow that is plentiful and of great quality, the same can’t be said for the plight of many of the hard-working farming community who are suffering from crippling droughts. So, as a community, what better way than for ‘snow farmers’ to help out our mates in the low lands… than to raise some funds to go towards feed, water, or where ever it can be used to greatest effect…so;
Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Snowshoes for hire
Snowshoeing is a great mountain activity that doesn’t involve special skills or expensive equipment.
Snowshoes aren’t just those ancient wooden tennis-racquet contraptions hanging on the lodge wall – there are modern versions, too - and Falls Creek Cross Country at Windy Corner has brand new Tubbs snowshoes for rent. It’s the easiest, safest, and cheapest way to get yourself anywhere on snow.
There are no special skills required to snowshoe. We all know that if you can dodge a wrench then you can dodge a ball. Likewise, if you can walk, then you can snowshoe. You just strap in, grab some Nordic poles if you’d like, and get going.
You’ll be amazed at how easily you can walk, even on soft snow.
From Windy Corner there are even signed snowshoe tracks to follow, out onto the cross-country trails and into the snow gums towards Rocky Valley Dam.

Ronice Goebel has been part of the cross-country skiing community at Falls Creek since 1988. She’s sun-tanned and lively. We sat down to talk skiing, and reflected on the rising numbers of females now getting into the sport.
This Saturday the 11th August, the Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club will host its annual Ski de Femme, a free social clinic suitable for beginner and intermediate female skiers. Last year numbers exploded with over 100 women and girls involved, and clinics were run by some of Australia’s best female skiers and international coaches. The event was started in 1994 by locals Helen L’Huillier and Jenny Van der Ploeg, who were both keen to get more women into a sport that they loved.
I asked Ronice how she first got into skiing. “I’m actually from Glen Waverly. I never
even saw snow as a kid, but I started skiing when I was at university. We started off backcountry skiing because we were poor students, and you could just take a tent and go out.”
Ronice is a teacher, and you couldn’t imagine her in any other profession. Encouraging, energetic, nurturing, and approachable, a great manager of people –these are all traits that come to mind. She studied teaching at university, and has been in education her whole life. “And I still love it!” she says.
She also has a postgraduate degree in Women’s Studies, which is fitting given the work that she has done consciously and unconsciously as a role model encouraging girls to clip in to skis. She’s selfless, not just in her actions, but in the way she talks about herself. Her incredible work and experiences, in her mind, are merely just things that she has done. The real stars, the people she remembers, are the skiers she has coached and the friends she has made. Nothing is about her. She talks about her

past as though biographing someone else. Perhaps that’s been the key to her longevity. Ronice joined the Birkebeiner Club in 1988 when she moved to Bogong Village as a teacher. When she had her daughter she thought the club would be a great way to meet other kids.
The importance of community is a common thread. I comment that I hardly see her alone.
“I’m often with a bunch of kids trailing around. I genuinely like the kids. This current crop is fantastic, and you get to know them. They’re fun, and they’re the future.”
Ronice is the current secretary of the Birkebeiner Club, and also manages the Victorian Cross-Country Ski Team, which is a junior team made up of skiers aged 12 to 20 years.
“I’m really interested in cross-country skiing development - the development of juniors and making things happen, so maybe that’s how I see myself: I’m just a ‘make things happen’ kind of person.”
She has also been an active competitor in ski racing, this year approaching her 27th Kangaroo Hoppet.
“What about overseas?” I ask.
“Oh, only Loppets” she replies off-handedly “I’ve done all the main Loppets, which is all 16 of those…”
‘Only Loppets’ refers to a series of marathon-length races around Europe, Asia, and North America. It’s no small achievement.
“The most memorable one was in Iceland, just a couple of years ago. It was so spectacular, to be up high. You know, I believe the Kangaroo Hoppet on a good day, and this one, are the best two races in the world.”
“And all this because you love skiing?” “Oh yeah. You love skiing, you meet people, and because I’m on the Kangaroo Hoppet board, you’re an ambassador. It’s so many people’s dream to come here to Australia.”
I ask her if she has noticed more women out skiing now than before. She agrees that there are, “When you’re out skiing you see a lot of women, not necessarily being great skiers, but enjoying being out in nature.”
There are many brilliant female skiers in Australia, but one of her heroines is Lescinska (Linky) Grimmer, who started skiing at 23 while studying law at the ANU in Canberra, then went on to compete at a World Championships.
According to Ronice, the key to keeping people in the sport is all about the friendships they make. “You don’t pretend to be someone else when you’re out on the snow; you can just be who you are, and if kids have friends in the sport when they’re young, they’ll stay in the sport a bit longer.”
For Ronice, she never left the sport, and skiing gets to the heart of what she loves about life.
“You make these friends overseas, and there is this big thing, this cultural exchange, and I love it. It’s like our contribution to world peace, because if you travel and see other people who are similar and want similar things, that’s what makes being human good, having friendships.”

A couple of the key members of the Ducks Team are:
Darren Robertson. Michelin star UK chef Mark Raffan introduced Darren to food. When he was 24 he moved to Australia to work for Tetsuya Wakuda. He stayed at Tetsuya’s for eight years during which time he was Head Chef for three years. In 2010 he started ‘The Table Sessions,’ a ‘guerilla dining organisation’ that ran pop-up dinners. These dinners won the accolade of Best Event 2011 by Australian Gourmet Pages.
Darren is one of the founding members of the Taste of Young Sydney (TOYS), which celebrated collaboration and experimentation in the kitchen and was awarded the Innovation Award in the SMH Good Food Guide 2010. Darren then went into business with a group of friends at the Three Blue Ducks in Bronte. The Three
Blue Ducks has held a SMH Chef’s hat from 2011-2014 and for three seasons ran the Gully Bar & Restaurant at Huski.
Darren and his business partner Mark wrote The Blue Ducks book in 2013 which is now on it’s second reprint. He is co-host of Channel 10’s ‘Recipe to Riches’ and has his own show ‘Charcoal Kitchen’ on Foxtel Life Style Food.

Spina Bifida Foundation Camp
The Spina Bifida Camp was off and running on Saturday with seven sit-skiers on the mountain and supporting the sit-skiers DWA had 15 DWA Guides and three support crew. With DWA also providing transport from Melbourne, accommodation in the snow at the new Howman’s Gap facility plus instructors and guides all working together to provide this fabulous opportunity for DWA participants to enjoy their involvement in winter sports.
Weather wise, the weekend started a little wet but it did not deter all who participated. With seven sit-skis on the mountain and 15 DWA jackets, the presence of DWA could be seen around the Falls Creek resort. On moving around the mountain, it was apparent that all members of SBFV had arrived to achieve their own personal goals. Travis and Campbell wanted to achieve independence on a sit-ski and with the assistance of our DWA guides, both achieved that goal by Sunday and then realised that sit-skiing does not always require a guide.
Ben and Kezia were not far behind as they roamed the mountain in conditions that had most skiers and riders heading inside. When they did arrive at Cloud 9, both where a little cold but with ‘hot rocks’ supplied by Hot Shots, their hands were soon getting warm. Thanks, Hot Shots for your continuing help.
Katherine and Gabi were both well into quality snow time. With Gabi moving around the mountain on a wet Saturday with Jim and Ken priming her for the run of independence with Daniel and Nic on Sunday that then ended in solo sit-ski riding down wombats. Katherine excelled hitting Big Dipper, Drovers Dream and working on a variety of turns down Ruined Castle - terrain that tested Kathrine, the sit-ski and her instructor, with the end
result being perfect shaped turns. Well done Katherine and a big thanks to Daniel and Nic – Katherine’s guides who assisted and enjoyed their weekend of guiding.
Libby was riding with Hanna in a Mountain Man sit-ski down Drovers with waves of super fans appreciating Hanna’s new-found skills so much to the extent that the team had to wait a few times to let everyone pass. Hanna put in strong carving turns from top to bottom and what great moves and camera work from Issy. Thanks Issy.
The other DWA sit-skiers were once again roaming in two’s and when it comes to lift queues DWA like to have large breaks between the riders on a chair lift. Travis and Campbell, in their sit-skis were well supported by DWA guides. Loading a sitski onto a lift is a well-rehearsed and timed operation. To the public when watching it could be seen that loading a sit-ski is simple process but as we all know anything that is easy becomes that way with planning and training on a repetitive basis for both DWA Guides and Lift Operators. No doubt that while at the lift you will hear the term “Slow and Pull Back” addressed to the lift operator. The request is a standard request and in their extensive training lift operations know that they must slow the lift and go around to the back of the chair lift and pull back the sit-ski while the guides lift the sit-ski into the chair. The sit-ski is then clipped to the chair for safety and depending on type of sit-ski other unique operations are performed.

Trail Report
With snow depths well over one and a half metres there is a lot more to like about Falls Creek at the moment. With over 50cm of snow recently fallen the groomers have been out there working hard to prepare the full trail network. A ‘hair dryer’ will be in affect this weekend though as it will be warm and windy before another cold front comes in for some more snow. I should stop with the weather report though because I’m not qualified. In terms of options, 60kms of XC trails have been groomed in the last week however more like 30km will be available on the daily. Expect all trails to be groomed after the storms settle though. Some highlights include Langford’s loop, Paul’s loop and when the winds die down definitely get up to McKay loop up top there for the nice vistas.

Many of you would know Ronice, the local Mount Beauty resident and Cross Country Ski pioneer and so it would be great to get around this as she has done a lot of work. On Sunday the 12th is a slightly longer race, the notorious Rocky Valley Rush/Sun Valley Ramble (insert location followed by dynamic adjective). This will be a 15/7.5km skate race Rambling its way along the beautiful contours of Sun Valley. Get around it.
Critique of Cross Country Skiing and the Human Condition
I was roller-skiing the other day, and although it may be kind of well-known in most of Europe/Scandinavia, it certainly isn’t in Australia. Whilst I enjoy it and it is such a good simulator for skiing, I get people asking me why would I do it? And why do I do cross country skiing even. So I thought this week I would unpack this godforsaken sport a little, delve deeper if you will.

Why do people like Cross Country Skiing?
Because cross-country skiers are existential heroes in glasses and tights. Instead of offering us distraction - the glittery melodrama of figure skating or the quirky novelty of curling - cross-country skiers lean right into a bleak truth: We are stranded on a planet that is largely indifferent to us, a world that sets mountains in our path and drops iceballs from 50,000 feet and tortures our skin with hostile air. There is no escaping it; the only noble choice is to clip in to some skis and slog right in. Cross-country skiing expresses something deep about the human condition: the absolute, non-negotiable necessity of the grind. The purity and sanctity of the goddamn slog.
The myth of Sisyphus which philosopher Albert Camus explored. That the world is absurd, man lives in a search for meaning, unity and clarity in a world that is unintelligible and has actually no real intrinsic values. Camus asks that upon realisation of the absurdity of the world, does that mean suicide? He says no, it requires revolt. For example, take the Greek myth of Sisyphus, a man condemned to perform the same meaningless task of pushing a boulder up a mountain only to see it roll back down again. Camus says Sisyphus is content because the struggle in life itself is enough to ‘fill a man’s heart.’ This in my view is similar to the sport of cross country skiing in that we find pleasure in the struggle of hill after hill. The grind is never ending but we still accept it and live it. It is important to know that whilst we think there may be meaning in what we do, there is really none. It’s good to keep that in perspective I think.

Instead, they suffer their way up. Where other skiers use gravity as jet fuel, cross-country skiers conscientiously object. They feel the tug of gravity and say: “No, thank you, I would prefer to take care of this myself. If you will excuse me now, I am going to mush my way across this gigantic flat hostile landscape using only the power of my huge, beleaguered thighs.” When we reach a downslope, we accept its burst of speed reluctantly, with gritted teeth, knowing that we will earn it back, with interest, soon enough.

We are a people that by one way or another may have been connected with a higher sort of happiness and satisfaction. MIM SODERGREN WOMEN’S PROGRAM
Five Day Wrap-Up
The week of 23rd – 27th July 2018 saw the annual Mim Sodergren Women’s 5-Day Program hosted by the Falls Creek Snowsports School and our beautiful alpine village and resort. 30 women and seven female coaches took to the slopes to transform technique and conquer terrain that both challenged and excited our participants.
The Women’s Program is named for Mim Sodergren, a ski instructor at Falls Creek during the 1980s who moved to New South Wales with her husband Mike - also an instructor - and were tragically killed in the Thredbo landslide in 1997. Mim ran a local ladies’ day at Falls Creek, and was a key proponent in developing the children’s ski school curriculum that continues today in the form of the Snowclub and Junior Workshop programs.
While the Program saw a week of wild weather and limited visibility, the women were incredible sports and truly embraced
the ‘ski by feel’ attitude that the weather called for. Venturing through Vertigo and Corkscrew Valleys, the Summit and The Maze in search of fresh tracks with only tactile senses to guide us certainly tested our balance, but these off-piste experiences
markedly improved our technique once back on the groomers.
The après events were a highlight, as Feathertop hosted welcome drinks at the start of the Program, and the Falls Creek Hotel once again put on après cocktails on Wednesday. Dinner on Thursday night at Huski was a culinary treat, and some ladies were lucky enough to walk away with a pair of Dragon Goggles or Rossignol skis, courtesy of our generous sponsors. An evening of Champagne shopping at the newly branded Ālp store allowed the ladies to relax after our first day, and many stocked up on the beautiful winter warmers that Layla Lee and her team have so carefully curated in store.

MIM SODERGREN WOMEN’S PROGRAM
The skiing continued, with all groups progressing to more difficult terrain throughout the week, and supplementing their learning with tips, tricks, drills and mileage. This year we had a spread of green, blue and black skiers, with more than twothirds of the group returning from previous years. It is a testament to the quality of the Program that so many women continue to return – not only for ski instruction, but also to share their alpine experience with old and new friends.
On the final day, the group paid tribute to Mim and Mike Sodergren, and their colleague Mary Phillips, all former Falls Creek employees who had moved to Thredbo and perished in the landslide. In the five years I have been coaching the Program, there’s not a time when I sit at Eagle Rock and listen to the words of the memorial without feeling a nostalgia for a woman I never met.
Huge thanks must go to my fellow coaches, Danielle Brooke, Nicole ‘Nik Nok’ Scheuch, Jane Mann, Rebecca ‘Bex’ Viney, Louise Knast and Kat Keane, as well as our Program Coordinator, Dickie Nott, and FCSL Marketing Department. Thank you also to all of the wonderful Falls Creek venues for hosting lunch, drinks, dinner and shopping events - the week was a real success, and we are very grateful for your hospitality.

Mini Series Three
Well done to those of you who braved Windy Corner’s notorious weather to enter Telemark Nordic Ski Club’s 3rd Mini Series event. Like on many occasions the Nordic Bowl proved to be poles apart from Windy Corner, providing wind protection and beautiful sunny weather. Last Sunday we had 22 children participating from under 8’s to under 18 age groups, and 8 in the adults category.

Also thank you goes to Falls Creek XC Grooming– the tracks were great especially after the rain we have had in the couple of days leading up to the event.

For those who stayed for the Laser Biathlon event, we had an inter-club competition between Telemark Nordic Ski Club and Birkebeiner/Telemark (Birke/Tele team). It was very exciting, seeing unique interpretations of the usual rules (jumping the start, pole throwing, sharing poles, track cut short, shooting twice and even bindings undoing). However, there was an eventual winner and that went to the Birke/Tele team! Well done to you all, we’ll have to have a rematch soon.

Supporting a Mate
According to a report from the Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience, in March 2014, 80 per cent of Queensland was officially in drought, including all 10 shires in the state’s north-west. As of 1 January 2015, there were 44 entire local government areas and three part local government areas drought declared, with another 78 Individually Droughted Property (IDP) declarations in an additional nine local government areas.
In May 2013, one sixth of New South Wales was in drought and by February 2014, 62 per cent of the state had received no significant rainfall for two years. Graziers experienced falling cattle prices and loss of income, with some having to shoot their stock or move them to other properties in response to deteriorating pasture and water availability.
The sad part is that, while the figures (and the awareness of drought) have been around for five years, the recent media flurry has brought it to our attention. The good part is that this community is jumping on board and is doing something for our mates on farms who are doing it ‘tough!’
