To fit, or not to fit…
That is the question
Talk about a topic that’s more controversial than who’s the best skier or boarder on the mountain. Snow chains… and boy can this get some people fired up!
There is one simple basic fact… that is, it is a requirement to carry chains during the declared snow season (this year that is June 10th until Oct 7th) when coming to the snow and when entering any Victorian resort. It is a regulatory requirement of an act of parliament – so, carrying snow chains isn’t optional.
Therefore, to visit Falls Creek (or any Victorian snow resort) make sure you: 1. have a set of chains for your vehicle, 2. they fit your rims and tires, 3. you know, or someone in your party knows how to

Resort Entry is located at Howman’s Gap, approx. 4km before reaching Falls Creek. Day and Night Passes are at $54 on arrival per day, (or $49.50 on line). If arriving after 5pm and departing prior to midnight on the same day, entry is free. Visitors over 65 years of age receive a discount.
Season Passes are available at $525 (or $450 on line).

2017 GRAVITY ENDURO NATIONAL
Round One - Falls Creek
The National Gravity Enduro Series acts as the qualifying series for the Enduro World Series. See mention in the article with Ben McIlroy.
The request to fit chains is all about safety. It isn’t done to cause inconvenience, but rather to avoid it! A good rule of thumb, if you have a two wheel drive and even more so, an all-wheel drive (AWD designated) – learn how to fit them and use them when the signs say to…. if you are carrying them and you don’t know how to fit them… (check this: http://snowsafe.org.au/driving-inalpine-areas).
When instructed, if you fail to fit chains, then the resorts (and Victoria Police) have a problem and unfortunately, there are consequences ie. Fines $$$.
Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August. The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.
There are two likely fines, one for failing to obey a road sign and the second, entering an alpine resort without carrying chains. All Victoria’s alpine resorts are authorised to issue the second infringement on the grounds of safety (refer back to earlier statement about regulations), whilst Victoria Police can issue both infringements when in resort, or the lesser of the two, when outside of the resort (hint: at the very minimum, to avoid what could be a $700 infringement…
Note to self – when the weather presents conditions that require the fitting of chains, or during the course of the day, where that huge forecast cold front and the 15cms of snow predicted begins to fall, it’s a fair bet that either authorised personnel, or the police, will be out checking (with the infringements book on hand) that you’ve got a set, or have been clever enough to fit them (on the right drive wheels) already.
SERIES
Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Cost is $50 per day or $90 for 2 days. Go to www.bluedirt. com.au to book. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig
The requirement to carry chains isn’t optional. In fact, VicRoads and resort management even help to remind you on - no less than five - really bright flashing digital signs along the Kiewa Valley highway and Bogong High Plains road as you are driving to the resort - you’re welcome. That’s because we don’t want to fine you, we’d rather you go up and get down from the mountain safely and everyone has had a really good time in the snow.

diff locks (or a “snow/mud/sand” button), you’re pretty much good to go. If, however, conditions are so poor (this decision isn’t taken lightly and is usually done in consultation with road authorities and Victoria Police) – you’ve still got to have and fit them, so please follow the instructions… it is about safety, not inconvenience.
Now, of course, common sense, not to mention self-preservation, the consideration of others and general appreciation of the challenges driving in alpine area’s present, should be enough of a reason to ‘do the right thing’ and to drive sensibly. Alas, given the amount of people stranded or in the ditch on a regular basis, it’s clear Darwin’s Theory of Evolution and the outcome from natural selection is only a matter of a few season’s away from becoming a reality!
So, drive safely folks, follow the signs, use the bays to fit/unfit chains and be considerate to other drivers and pull over into any of the new overtaking pass lanes if you are driving cautiously or the person tailgating you is a little short of patience (refer back to Darwin’s Theory!).
Now – Foodie Tip of the Week – Attunga Lodge…apart from the awesome indigenous art collection, the food is just as impressive. We dined as a group of four, so sampled the extensive and well-chosen menu… trout
chowder, pork belly bites x2, duck spring rolls… then onto mains: Kangaroo, confit duck x2 , and a porterhouse… dessert at this stage was left to two teenagers with bottomless pits for stomachs… cue the Attunga Volcom S’mores and the Wattleseed brulee… then, food coma! Do yourselves a favour, visit James and his team and don’t forget to survey his wine menu, there are some rippers at really (unbelievably) good value! Bon appetite…

And Its People
Few people know the high plains better than Parks Victoria Rangers and Field Service Officers. Blair Hume is one such person. I caught up with him at his home in Mount Beauty.
We start talking about his role at Parks. “My title is Field Service Officer (Fire and Emergency) so the bulk of my work is focused on delivering our wildfire response and our planned burning programme. I work directly under the Ranger Team Leader Kev Cosgriff, who is accomplished in fire himself, as a lot of Parks people are.”
Blair also has a large visitor-services role, in addition to his fire role. When he mentions this I’m imagining him taking groups of awe-struck visitors on ridge-top walks. But he clarifies: “I get to go on romantic walks… with chainsaws and brush-cutters. We do a lot of the maintenance on the
walking trail network through the Bogong High Plains.”
A lot of the Parks Victoria work is hands on, rough, and dirty. Blair got his full-time role at Parks ‘through the back door,’ after he had worked two full seasons in a seasonal fire-fighting role. “It really is the lowliest way. You’ve got to get grubby, breath in a lot of dust, smoke, heat and flies at that fire-fighting end, then you get to learn the business a bit that way, and you develop a reputation.”
In his third season he landed a full-time role at Mount Buffalo. Then, not long after, a position came up in Tawonga South. Longtime Parks Officer Andy Kromar went from his Fire and Emergency role into a new Field Services role, and Blair took Andy’s job, which he admitted, were big shoes to fill.
Nowadays Blair and Andy work ‘in each other’s back pockets’ and share different aspects of each other’s roles.
“It’s been a privilege working alongside
him. He has patience and is willing to give information to others, all without a speck of ego. He’s been one of the best mentors that I’ve ever had in my working career.”
Before coming to Mount Beauty, Blair, his wife Julie and son Axel had spent a few years in regional Queensland. The lure had

been the high salary of driving trucks for a multinational civil construction company, but Blair never took to the climate or the culture. “There are nice people there, but it’s another world - a land untouched by modern dentistry, where every second woman has a tattoo on her neck.”
“When I felt like I’d had enough it was time to come home to Victoria, and rather than rush back to Alexandra where we owned a home, I would have died wondering what it’s like to live here in Beauty year-round, so I made some phone calls.”
Blair grew up in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. His father was blind, but was ‘very active for a blind bugger.’ They grew up sailing, bushwalking, and windsurfing.
“I cut my teeth cross-country skiing at Lake Mountain. I think I was 11 and I was guiding my brothers who were nine and seven, and we’d go off all day. Between the three of us we’d manage to get back somehow. No one died. Mum was very supportive of all our sporting interests.”
Those early trips to Lake Mountain ‘set the hook’ and Blair is now an avid cross-country skier. “I think I naturally gravitate towards outdoor pursuits that have a bit of suffering involved. I quite like a long-distance bike ride and I think it helps that there’s a mastery of equipment and technique, like there is with skiing and cycling.”
Somehow Blair also finds the time to be an active member of the Team Mount Beauty cycling club, where he’s helping to run the Mitta to Mount Beauty 50km race, which is in desperate need of revival. The Mitta is set down for Sunday 28th October this year.
“I do a lot of trail work in the mountain bike park. It’s now 50-50 whether I ride, or take a rake-hoe out. I love riding and getting feedback from other riders who appreciate the trails.”
The longer we talk the more it seems Blair spends most of his time outdoors skiing or cycling, or with a brush-cutter or chainsaw in his hands. Over summer he coordinates working bees with the Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club to maintain the cross-country ski trails, digging out drains, brush-cutting and adjusting trail routes to maximise snow coverage.
The Parks office in Tawonga South will only be getting busier. On the cards is a huge upgrade to the Falls Creek-Mount Hotham Alpine Crossing. Blair references success stories in Tasmania, New Zealand, and even the Great Ocean Walk, where improvements have made the walks premier tourist attractions.
“Healthy Parks, Healthy people… it’s one thing to conserve the park for generations to come, but we don’t want to lock it up, either. We need a healthy park to promote people coming to enjoy it. Otherwise why are we protecting it? It’s not just for the sake of the biodiversity, it’s also because it’s a bloody nice place to be.” • Struan Jones
FALLS CREEK SLED DOG CLASSIC
A Fabulous Spectacle
It’s the first week of August and Mushers from all over Australia are travelling to Falls Creek for this weekend’s 8th Annual Sled Dog Classic – the premier alpine dog sled race in this country. This really is a unique event - the only sled dog race through an Alpine Village. After an exhibition event in 2010, the race is now in its 8th year and is a must see Falls Creek Resort experience.
The event is a National Open pointscore race, accredited by the Australian Sled Dog Sports Association (ASSA) and in 2018 will see elite teams of Alaskan Huskies, Siberian Huskies, Eurohounds and Alaskan Malamutes compete for prizemoney and the coveted first place titles in six dog, four dog, three dog and two dog classes. We have teams travelling from Western Australia, Queensland, South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria.

The weekend will be pretty busy starting with the seeding heats on Thursday and Friday evenings from Windy Corner top carpark. The teams will run out along the XC Trails and events will include two, three, four and six dog classes.
From 11am – 1pm Saturday visitors and residents will have the opportunity to meet the Mushers and their dogs in a public Sled Dog Exhibition located in Slalom Plaza opposite the car park. Come and meet the ‘rockstars’ of the event, our mushers and some of their race dogs will be available for a chat and, of course there will be plenty of husky cuddles going around. Find out what it takes to look after, train and drive a sled dog team.
Saturday night is the big one. From 6:30pm two, three, four and six dog teams will race through the village streets, starting at Slalom Plaza, up Slalom street, winding their way up Arlberg, to Koki Corner and left up Parallel, along the aqueduct, around the Village Bowl and back down the streets to finish in Slalom Plaza. This course may change subject to weather conditions.

all the way around. There is only one stipulation. You must leave your pets at home. Do not bring your dogs to the event, whether on a lead or in your pocket. These sled dogs are large, powerful racing dogs – doing what they love doing naturally. Distractions caused by pets can cause problems.
Presentations will take place at the Falls Creek Country Club restaurant around 8:30pm Saturday and the Race organisers would love to see representatives from sponsor lodges come and enjoy the celebration.

Shelley Earl Camp
Shelley Earl Consulting Camp was once again popular with all the participants who attended. Friday night the Shelley Earl group arrived at the DWA Howman’s gap new facility and on walking around the smiles and looks of amazement could be seen on the faces of all at the camp. After taking it in the Shelley Earl participants and the DWA team make the Friday night commute just before closing time to Falls Creek Ski Rentals who every week kindly assist DWA in obtaining skis, boards and tickets for our members, ready for the weekend. Always with a smile and always willing to help in any way they can. While back at Howman’s the sit skis and equipment are fitted and made ready for the weekend camp.
On Saturday the weather was kind, the roads were clear and with three sit skis, two skiers, one snowboarder and the DWA guides we all arrived at the bottom of Halley’s Comet chair to start the day. DWA always expect the unexpected and with a broken boarding strap to fix there was no lack of challenges to get it fixed with Chris being up to the challenge. When fixed Damien and DWA guide Chris started on their snowboarding journey. They could be seen down Main St, Highway and Drovers experimenting with unloading.
The sit skis with Katie, Andrew and Natasha made their way up via Halley’s chair with their guides and the runs were selected. Kate with her love of the winter and snow kept continuous turns and enjoyed the mastery of Jane guiding the sit ski. Andrew was in the hands of Falls Creek Instructor Tim and was being instructed about initiating a turn and rotation. Gerry with Ruth as his guide
progressed from Mouse Trap to Drovers and although vision was limited it certainly did not detract from Gerry’s ability to master turning. While Raylene, after being away from skiing for several years, had the steady hand of Jim encouraging her progression. Dan as the main DWA guide for Natasha and assisted by Corinne and Ken could be seen exploring the runs less used down Rapunzel and then next through the Nastar Race Course and into the trees on Highway 83. The sit ski was certainly on edge and Tash was leaning right over helping Dan with every turn.
It was the Shelley Earl camp and Shelley herself also joined in on the camp by skiing from person to person during the day and making sure all her camp members were enjoying the camp. Later Shelley was given several guiding tips by Jane Costello for assisting with a sit ski. Great effort Shelley and Jane.
Sunday proved to be an experimental day with the weather dictating what the DWA Shelley Earl Camp could do and where we could go but as expected everyone came out to brave the rain, hail and wind and continued to improve. A few hot coffees and hot chocolates were consumed at Cloud 9 and as always Cloud 9 delivered the best food and service and a place to rest. Thank you Cloud 9 you always do your best for everyone at Falls Creek. And, despite the severe weather, the Shelley Earl Camp was enjoyed by all. For Women in Skiing
The Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club was founded in 1977 when a small group of enthusiastic skiers met and created a ski club that would foster the development of cross-country skiing
Fast forward to the winter of 1993 when two top-ranked female Swedish athletes and their coach visited Falls Creek Alpine Resort to conduct clinics, exposing Australian women and girls to elite cross-country skiing. The other positive aspect of this encounter with world-class ski racers led to greater race participation amongst female skiers.
It was also the catalyst for Falls Creek’s annual Ski de Femme, a community crosscountry ski event for women.
The first event, organised in1994 by two local passionate skiers and Birkebeiner members Helen L’Huillier and Jenny van der Ploeg, was designed to encourage more women to get involved in a sport they loved. Since its early beginning, Falls Creek’s annual Ski de Femme has evolved into a very popular day that will be held this winter (at the Nordic Bowl) on Saturday, August 11.
It is an open event for women from beginner to intermediate skiers of all ages. Free clinics, run by some of Australia’s best female skiers, such as National Team members Kat Paul and Casey Wright, will be supported by two very talented French skiers Aurelie Dabudyk and Iris Pessey, who came out from France to join the Falls Creek Cross Country Centre.

Tony Pammer, Manager at Falls Creek Cross Country, has noted a ‘four-fold increase’ in lessons this season compared to the same time two years ago.
It has been a record year for visitation this summer and Resort Management would like to get your feedback on events, visitor demographic, mountain biking and general observations.
“More cross-country instructors have been hired to keep up with the demand, including three female instructors from Europe” he said.
Therefore you are invited to join the relevant Resort Management personnel and other members of the community for a summer season debrief meeting.
Ronice Goebels, Secretary of the Birkebeiner Ski Club and Manager of the Victorian Cross-Country Ski Team, says today about two-thirds of the Victorian team comprises young female athletes, and agrees that there are more women out skiing now than ever before.
This meeting will take place on Wednesday 26th April from 9:30am to around 11:30am in the Boardroom above Foodworks in QT.

the sport most notably on the rise. This year the Birkebeiner Club is hosting American Cambria McDermott, the first female ski coach to conduct lessons and clinics with its members.
The sport isn’t all about competition and racing. In fact, the opposite is probably more accurate.
“It’s not about winning so much. It’s not even about racing. It’s about enjoying the sport, making connections and friendships with people from all over the world” said Ronice.

Recap from Last Weekend
Whilst there was no racing in Falls Creek last weekend, the Australian Junior Nationals were held in Perisher Valley with a skate sprint event on the Saturday and a classic distance on the Sunday. The Conditions where pretty dreary as it both rained and snowed, the sun only poking through Saturday morning just to say hello for a little while. There were lots of age categories to ensure equal level racing and good spectating. In the Men’s U20 sprint final Will Middlemiss skied away from the field early to claim the gold ahead of Tom Hoogenraad and Archie Gordon. The Women’s U20 was similar with Darcie Morton too strong for Emily Champion and Lulu Miskin. The Men’s U18 was won by Declan Burke who - although having a bad time-trialpulled it out in the final ahead of Bentley Walker-Broose and Cooper Anderson from USA. The Men’s U16 was won for the third time in a row by Hugo Hinkfuss and Lily
Murnane won the Women’s U16 final. The Men (or more like boys) U14 was won by Thomas Inglis, and the Girls U14 was strongly won by Heli Laajoki from ACT. Damika Morton and Isaac Spring were the U12 sprint final winner from Saturday. On Sunday was a 7.5km classic for the older boys and a 5km classic for the older girls with distances lessening for the younger fields. The Sunday was blowing a gusty wind and snow conditions were quite soft meaning lots of klister! Nic (Blacksac) Blackwell skied very well coming in 1:25 ahead of second place Tom Hoogenraad and third place Will Middlemiss who was tired from the day before. In the Junior Women, Darcie Morton - who this year has transferred codes from Biathlon to XC - edged in front of an in-form Phoebe Cridland to claim the gold with Tuva Bygrave from Norway in third place. Zana Evens skied well to get the girls U16 3.5km medal and likewise did Hugo Hinkfuss for the boys U16 5km. Jayden Spring and Heli Laajoki were our U14 winner and brother Isaac Spring as well as Damika Morton were our U12 1.4km winners. Great competitive racing from all and from all reports it was a fun weekend! I almost forgot to say that Victoria beat NSW in the state v state points competition.
This weekend
There’s not heaps this week in terms of XC racing at Falls Creek but still it is a good chance to practice some hoppet skills and clock in some big skis. On Sunday the 5th of August is the Snow Trek & Travel Mini Series in the Nordic Bowl. This will be a classic race of distances 0.5/1.5 and 2.5km. Looking elsewhere, our arch nemesis in Mount Hotham is holding their annual ‘Pub to Pub’ extravaganza, the 12km skate race from Hotham to Dinner Plain. I did this one last year and I was pleasantly surprised with how cool the course was. That’s on Saturday the 3rd starting at ‘The General’ pub at Hotham.

Competitive International Success
What does it take to have constant reliable success in cross country skiing? Since I have spoken a bit about racing in light of our Junior Champs from last weekend, it reminded me of when I was in Norway last year competing at Norwegian Junior Championships. I stood at the start line in a field of 300 boys all aged between 18 and 19 years with age field getting even larger as you go down. So I thought is this why Norway is the most successful Winter Sport country? What do they have? Let’s see.
Long, long winters and lots of snow

Brooding Nordic introspection
From the middle of November until the end of January, the northernmost parts of Norway don’t see any sun. Much of the winter also brings sub-zero temperatures and snowfall – but that’s not enough to explain winter sport prowess on its own.
A nation born with skis on
“In Norway we are born with skis on our feet” is a Folk saying with a ring of truth to it. Away from urban centres, even a trip down the road to the shops might involve a bit of cross-country skiing.

Norway endured a terrible 2006 Winter Olympic Games Torino, securing only two golds. Worse than that, they fell behind Sweden in the medal table, a moment of national shame. This led to an intense period of contemplation, with some of the Norwegian press reduced to claiming ‘partly Norwegian’ medals for foreign competitors with Norwegian ancestry. For two people who have spent their lives enjoying copious varieties and amounts of exercise, one thing became obvious. Yoga was the next step! Why? It became clear to us that without appropriate forms of exercise and movement longevity of exercise was in question. Wellness, preservation and mindfulness is an absolute requirement for us. After many years of practicing yoga, we found ourselves on a flight to Bali to study under three incredible teachers from the University of Mumbai; both to enhance our own personal practice and to graduate with an international qualification to share the experience of yoga.
Having spent the last fifteen years in Falls Creek we were eager to get a program off the ground as we saw a growing demand for this type of activity on the hill. The feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive. Our philosophy is that all people can benefit from yoga. We have designed mixed level classes that aim to keep people ski fit and injury free. #SkiFitYoga
