2017 GRAVITY ENDURO NATIONAL SERIES
Round One - Falls Creek
Tin the article with Ben McIlroy. Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August.

There are clinics, championships and with the new GPS tracking of the XC Groomer, there’s an interactive way to view the freshest and most recent grooming. Check out Windy Corner, aptly named, it is the centre of Australia’s XC community. Don’t worry, if you don’t have the gear, it’s all available to hire. Don’t be fooled, if you’re a downhill skier, it’s a very different experience… and talk about exercise… what a work out! It’s no wonder the elite athletes in the XC world are some, if not the toughest and fittest humans on the planet. Hint: give it a go on a wind hold day!
If you’re staying a while, enter a team in the Wombats Rambler Night Race, it’s a lot of fun and there’s usually a few hidden challenges groomed in to make it just that little bit more ‘entertaining.’
Another big hit and back for its second year, the Mountainfilm on Tour. Recognised as one of the “Top 25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World” by MovieMaker magazine, it’s a great night showcasing an array of short films across skiing, rafting, mountaineering, culture, the environment and adventure travel. There are two sessions, the 5pm and an
8pm on Sunday July 29th… get along. Foodie Tip of the Week: Someplace Else Bar and Grill – you cannot go past a bowl (or two) of the Crumbed Mushroomspanko crumbed with gremolata, shaved parmesan and pesto kewpie. My boys ask for these instead of ‘French fries’ - now that’s a winner. Looking for a burger, the owners also know a thing or two about meat… there isn’t a bad burger on the menu… take the challenge and go ‘The 300’ - dare ya!

Leisure Balance Camp
What a weekend it was for Leisure Balance as they held their first winter camp at Falls Creek through DWA - who supplied the accommodation, transport, guides, on-snow and off-snow support. Saturday was the start of the Falls Creek camp and it was another magical day at Falls with perfect conditions.
The Leisure Balance camp consisted of four sit-ski riders and two snowboarders who could be seen roaming all over the mountain with individuals determined to achieve their own personal goals. DWA partnered and worked with the Falls Creek Snowsports School in both beginner adaptive snowboarding lessons and sit-skiing in the morning. Once out on the mountain the care and attention given by the lift operators helped to deliver the perfect ride safely up the mountain. It was extremely pleasing to see three Falls Creek teams working together as one to deliver a perfect outcome for the

On the snow, snowboarding Dan told us that he was a ‘gun’ and that he was great on a skate board in his younger years and guess what - he was! After the first half of the day was spent going over the basics for snowboarding on Mouse Trap in the afternoon Dan was off down Drovers independently linking his turns one after another. Heath - another snowboarder showed us all what determination can achieve by just ‘doing it’ no matter how many times he fell, Heath just got back up.
The DWA sit-skiers were also going strong with small bumps and sidewall rides being part of the day, while Paul was giving a thumb’s up to go faster. Luke and Robyn were also trying outriggers down Drovers and liking it - safe but fast. At Ruined Castle there was time for the DWA guides known as ‘The Two Nics’ to put Cameron into one or two 360’s and while he enjoyed the thrill of the spin, the bumps were not as much fun for him.
Whether it is sit-skiing, skiing, snowboarding, telemark or cross country, DWA and the skiing community have come up with a variety of techniques and technologies that can help newcomers break into the skiing and riding world with a minimum of difficulty. It’s only natural that people with various bodily injuries and disabilities want to find ways to start or to continue to enjoy adapted sport.
Leisure Balance took on the challenges and at the end of the weekend they had achieved their goals with a few risks, no injuries and lots of laughter. A huge thankyou to the DWA Guides and Leisure Balance crew and their carers who assisted and made this a most enjoyable weekend for all.

Big Steps for Little Shredders!
Is there anything cuter (and perhaps somewhat levelling) than seeing ‘little people’ ripping up the corduroy or sliding the baby terrain park with confidence? Seriously, they are a barely helmets on skis! I speak from firsthand experience for once again, I’m left speechless as my five year old hits the latest of our Panorama Park features and tells me to just watch “because Mummy, you’re too slow and not good enough!”
Now, not that I want to share my feelings of on-snow inadequacy with other parents, but this year we’re really excited to introduce kids snowboarding lesson options for our littlest of shredders… yes, those cheeky 3-5year olds!
In another Falls Creek first, we’re very proud to be piloting this new initiative which sees the former Burton Wriglet Park program, which provided a basic play environment for tots, evolve into a fun yet meaningful teaching program to help develop true boarding skills for littlies. To help facilitate this (yep, those little rippers do need extra help) we now have limited the opportunities on certain days…
THURSDAYS & SATURDAYS ONLY –Snippets Snowboard Program
What: Group Lesson. When: 3.15pm –4.15pm. Cost: $77 per child. Age: 3-5 year olds.
If your little one has an amazing time in the Snippets program, then you might like to extend the experience and book into a half day program the next day to consolidate their learning.

One thing my little man has taught me is that kids are capable of extraordinary things... and here at Falls Creek, you can let them find their fun in the most supportive and safe of alpine environments. Let them try something new… it may not float their boat… but then again, .it may be the start of something much more than you or they could ever have dreamed!

If the Upper Kiewa Valley has a soundtrack, then Alpine Radio is playing it, broadcasting from the ‘Heart of the High Country to you.’ The station is staffed by a mix of dedicated volunteers, and managed daily by the industrious Vivienne Rochford. I caught up with
Alpine Radio occupies a small space adjacent to the Mount Beauty Visitor Centre. The inside of a radio studio is unassuming and surprisingly basic. The presenter sits in a windowed room at a desk of controls with a computer and a microphone, and that’s about it. Vivienne sits at her desk in full view of the presenter, with the radio behind her tuned in so she can hear exactly what’s happening on air.
Presenters have free reign over their programmes, so there is a sense of collective ownership.
Vivienne is genuinely in awe of the volunteers: “Without volunteers we’d be nothing. We’d be nowhere. And there are so many really lovely people, and so willing!”
Vivienne has a musical background also. Her father was a professional jazz musician and she learnt classical violin.
When the Station Manager position was advertised, Vivienne had already moved to Mount Beauty, yet would still travel back to Canberra at times to do contract work.
“I saw the position, and I thought: ‘That’s exciting!’ Because I do love radio and I do love the community here. People in this area are just the best.”
Vivienne applied for, and got the job. That ended her work in Canberra.

“It’s my job to make sure things run smoothly: to make sure we have presenters for every programme, and also make sure our sponsors are happy. And basically look after our volunteers and make sure they’re happy.”
“I love all music - classical, jazz, everything! Hip-hop - I love it all. I used to love coming in here when I was presenting and playing music, I’d want to get up and jig along.”

Vivienne and her husband Brian stumbled upon Mount Beauty by chance when they were looking to leave Canberra to move to a smaller town. “We were walking up the street here and someone smiled and said “Hello!” And I said to Brian: “This is it.” He just felt the same. We were immediately attracted. And the people, they care about you! They really do. It’s nice.”
Since then Vivienne has embedded herself in the town and its people. She explains how she loves the scenery, and loves to walk around the lake in autumn, or in winter in a ski jacket.
Alpine Radio continues to tick along. I get the impression that some days Vivienne barely pulls together enough presenters to align with time slots. But, she does it all tirelessly. No one person keeps the station on the airwaves, and Vivienne recognises that. She is always trying to attract more volunteers.

BOOT FITTING
Getting the Best Results
Are you doing your ski boots up right? Short answer, probably not.
This is an issue that affects many people. It’s such a simple fix to many problems that I’m going to write a whole article about it. Cramping of the foot, numb toes, sore shins, scrunched toes –these are all issues that can be caused by ski boots being buckled up incorrectly. So how should it be done?
Well I’m glad you ask! First, slide your foot into your boots that are at room temperature - please don’t leave them in the freezing car or outside overnight. Then loosely do up the top two buckles. Now stand up and flex back and forth in your boots - you need to get your foot right back into the heel pocket. It’s at this point that many people like to smash the heel of the boot into the floor - go ahead, you can do that if you like, but it’s fairly unnecessary,

Okay, we’re standing in our boots. Perfect. Now sit down again - everything to do with boot fitting involves a fair bit of standup - sit-down - repeat. Now do those top two buckles up tighter. They should be done firm enough that you can only just get them done up, but they’re not hurting. Consider these buckles on the cuff as holding you firmly into the drive shaft of your ski engine. These need to be done up firmly so that your energy and movements are translated into the ski and give you those fine-tuned carve turns you dream about. If these are loose, control is lost and the ski will be all over the place.
Now it’s time to do up those last buckles across the top of your foot. These are there to keep the correct shape of the boot. By doing them up correctly you create a rigid structure of the forefoot for improved energy transfer and control. You also seal the boot from snow getting in and making your foot wet and cold. You only need to close these buckles with an easy flick of your thumb - no tighter as this can deform the boot. This is where many people trip up (so to speak) and do up too tightly,
blocking one of the main arteries (the dorsalis pedis) that runs across the top of your foot and leaves you with frozen, numb and painful toes.
First Run
Good job! Your boots are done up like a pro and you’re hitting first lifts for your premier run of the day. A quick run down the groomers, warming up those legs, a few short turns then really laying into those longer GS turns. Hit the lift again and oh! The feet are pounding. It’s okay, this is perfectly normal. Loosen your boots for the chair ride up. You might find you need to do this for the first few runs of the day until your feet and legs have warmed up and are willing to accept being stuffed inside a rigid, plastic splint - a.k.a. ski boots.
After a few more runs you may find you need to tighten those top buckles at the start of the run. This is good. Do it to the point it feels firm yet comfortable again. My boots have been properly fitted but are still sore
No fear. This does not mean they’ve been fitted incorrectly - or it might - but you won’t know yet. Brand new boots will still take a bit of wearing in, even if they’ve been professionally fitted. Feeling some niggly spots on your first couple of days is perfectly normal, as long as they’re not excruciating and most importantly, as long as the issue seems to be moving around and doesn’t remain solely in the one spot. For example, you may feel a bit of pressure on your little toe, but a bit later that’s stopped and your ankle feels a bit wacky. Adjust the buckles if you like or wiggle the tongue and this should improve.
If, however, there’s a spot that is really sore all day then this needs to be addressed. Go and see a good boot-fitter to resolve this.

Skiing Parallel
Many people I ski with ask me “why am I not skiing parallel all the time?” Generally, this is easier to fix than you might think. It just takes some practice and a bucket load of confidence. You may have been skiing for a while now but you still find that your skis are not always parallel. Instead they seem to make a small snowplough at the start of your turns. You would probably tell me that it doesn’t happen all the time, only when you’re skiing on steeper runs. So, what do we need to work on to make sure your skis are parallel all of the time? To start a turn with our skis parallel we need three things:
1. To rise up taller at the start of the turn, 2. to have both skis flattened on the snow, and
3. to have both skis turn at the same time by using the legs or focusing on the feet to turn the tips of both skis downhill.
The hard part is that these three things need to be done together every time. The best thing I can suggest is to practice making parallel turns on gentler terrain. You need a certain speed to be able to make a parallel turns and if you go too slowly, which often happens on steeper runs, you will most certainly stem or step your turns. The trick is to perfect the movements above on the easier hills so that it becomes second nature. That way you won’t have to think about it when the run gets steeper.
My second tip is to show your brain that a parallel turn is natural. You can achieve this by practicing ‘patient turn’ on a nice, open, empty slope. Traverse across the hill on your

edges, stand up tall and flatten both skis (by rolling your feet and knees downhill) and then do nothing else but wait. Skis are designed to turn down the hill, tips first. Parallel turning is a natural way to start turns because that is what our skis are designed to do. I suggest trying patient turns on a gentle slope to start with as you will go quite fast. Once you’ve got the feel for how easy it is to start a parallel turn you will need to work on finishing the turn up hill to slow down.
Finally, enjoy the feeling of committing to the start of a turn, practice a lot and have fun!

Trail Report
Falls Creek has been chugging along nicely; - think a coal powered train traveling along a slight declined hill whereby its momentum alone is almost enough to keep it moving. There is really good snow cover over all trails with another dump having just fallen to top things up and get us over a metre. The grooming has also picked up the last week or so with much more firmly packed snow and less rat tracks around. My personal highlights lately: Last Saturday, I performed my own secret Level 3 interval session skating around the High Plains Tour course in the morning before the race started. The snow was so nice and firm and fast, I felt like a superman. Another highlight, albeit small, we had a group speed session last week, and we did double pole sets up Aitkens, and I could emit full

power through my poles without punching through the top layer of snow! How good is that?.
What Just Happened
Last weekend was pretty cool, some great weather and some great racing. On Saturday the 14th of July was the Snow Trek & Travel High Plains Tour. There were three distances 2.5km, 5km and 10km with categories for Male and Female. The course was a little different this year with the 5km loop including a loop across the Dam Wall and headed out towards Watchbed a bit. In the 10km event there were over 40 men competing. Mark Pollock came out on top dropping Ben Derrick, Nic ‘BlackSac’ Blackwell and Tom Hoogenraad over the course of the race. Mark raced topless for this one; he thought it was sunny enough to take the top thermal off - that was his decision and that’s fine. Special mention to Ben Derrick for the first man over 30 and Richie Rumberg as the first man 50+. Nice. In the women’s 10km event, young U18 Hannah Price took out the title ahead of Brianna Oldis and Lola Timewell (Iris

In the 2.5km event, young U14 chap Leuwin Harridge destroyed the field. Elle Sankey won the girls 2.5km event, also kind of destroying the field.
The 1km fun event which was held after the main event was a success also with many trying racing for a bit of fun.
On Sunday the Howman’s Gap Vic Relay champs were held. For this, teams were much more freely recognised. You could create whatever team of three people you wanted. However there were more official prizes for the club teams etc. In the 5km event (3x5km), ‘Crusty old Coaches’ consisting of the washed-up Valerio Leccardi, American outcast August Teague, and Tim Retchford took out the title thirty seconds ahead of the Wangaratta ski team consisting of Mark Pollock, Cameron Dickinson and Ben Derrick. Special mentions for ‘Multiculturalism’ (McMahon, Terry and Whitley), ‘PAT ski team’ (Manning, Forrer, Silvester) and ‘Two and a Half Men’ (Rumbergs and Budge) which was probably the best team name. The sole women’s team beat most of the mixed teams and the “Two and a half men” full male team as well. This team was

What is Coming Up
If you thought last weekend was big, well this one is perhaps even bigger. On July the 21st and 22nd Falls Creek will stage the Victorian Junior Ski Champs. This is a classic sprint on Saturday and a Skate distance on the Sunday. Also scheduled on the same days are the Australian Senior National Championships in Perisher Valley. These races are the first of the Australian/ New Zealand Cup and will have the best Aussie Skiers fighting it out for the title. So wherever you are there are no excuses not to either support some skiers or even have a race yourself. The weather is looking like it will shape up fantastically for the races. I will be in Perisher for the Aus Champs and will present a wrap for next week. • Seve de Campo

The 10km Tour race course provided some early season Hoppet training that included a challenging start for some, up the Hoppet start. However, all very soon changed to downhill running tracks followed by a flat run over the dam wall and on the road beside the dam, out past Picnic Point and back. Mark Pollock and Hanna Price were the overall winners whose names will be engraved on the perpetual trophies that reside on the walls of the dining room at Howman’s Gap.
Families and friends got into the fun spirit of the new relay format. Children formed teams with parents and siblings and mates got together to create teams with names such as Mixed Nuts, Three Peas In a Pod (the Pescod family), The Snowgirls on Skis, Two and a Half Men, Lily’s Late and, Team Low Socioeconomic. The winning men’s team was Crusty Old Coaches (from Birkebeiner Ski Club) on the 5km course narrowly beat rivals Wangaratta ski club. The winning women’s team on the 5km course was Fergie’s Echidna’s.

Last week in Falls Creek was extremely exciting for two young guests staying at Pretty Valley Lodge.
One young unsuspecting lady had been staying at the lodge all week with-out her beloved boyfriend - who had to stay home to tend to the farm.

A lodge manager’s position is available for the 2019 ski season, with the potential for extension.
Ideally the role requires two people and the Managers are responsible for the operation of the Lodge so that members and guests enjoy their holiday in a safe, clean and relaxed atmosphere.

Local lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016.
Imagine skiing, gliding across glowing snow on a silent, deserted trail at night, with the snowgums casting shadows onto the snow under a bright full moon. A night-time ski is an unparalleled experience, and July 28 is the night to do it.
On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.
MR: Is this your first overseas race?
Ben: Yep, first overseas race, first EWS (Enduro World Series), so it’s going to be pretty exciting.
Whether you have been aware of it or not, the full moon has an incredible impact on your life. When that big round moon lights up the night sky, things can get a bit loony. The words ‘lunacy’ and ‘lunatic’ stem from the word ‘Luna’ – the name of the ancient Roman moon goddess, whose evil influence was often blamed for mania amongst people.
MR: Is it excitement or are you nervous?
Ben: I’m probably a bit more nervous than excited. Excited to race overseas, but nervous because it’s such a big event.
MR: Have you heard anything about the tracks over in Rotorua, NZ?
Your most memorable skiing experience of 2018 may very well be the one you have on the night of July 28. Ben: My first national year in 2015. I raced three events, Toowoomba, Adelaide, and Canberra and placed 3rd overall for the series.
Support Needed
In 2016 I raced the Bright, Perth and Adelaide National series events winning all three and the U19 series overall. I then went on to win U19 National Champs in Adelaide (with a time that would have knocked Troy Brosnan off the elite podium).
Last week, Thursday 12th to be precise, during the day, some ‘low life nuff nuff’ went to a fair amount of trouble to do damage to a particular staff vehicle parked in the day staff parking area.
MR: How did you end up travelling and racing alongside Chris Panozzo (2 time Elite Gravity Enduro Australian champion)?
This total dick-head ripped off the number plate, kicked in a door, bent wiper blades and ripped off three door handles – during the day. And for what reason? No-one can possibly fathom why this ‘tossa’ would do
Ben: I first met Chris at a Victorian Enduro state round at Barjarg, I was still like Under 15s or Under 17s and I knew that he was a fast dude. I wanted to hang out with the fast guys so I wanted to hang out with Chris Panozzo.

Ben: I’m racing the EWS in New Zealand and in Tasmania but this year I want to finish Year 12 and get out alive, do as much riding as I can and stay fit. It’s probably not the best year to be going into my first EWS because Year 12 takes up such a massive chunk of my time.

CONGRATULATIONS
…And Well Done!
Late at night on the last day of June in 1993, a young family pulled into the car park at Snow Gum Motel after an eight hour trek from Hamilton in Western Victoria.
The next morning, they would begin the next chapter in their lives as the new owners of the Tawonga South Newsagency and Post Office and, 25 years later, they’re still there.
Stephen and Lynne Short recently celebrated this significant milestone, and it’s safe to say the business is unrecognisable compared to the one they took over all those years ago.
Firstly, the location. For those new to town, you may not know that the store was originally located next door (now Swiss and Chips) and was also known for the delicious takeaway food they cooked. If you never had the chance to taste one of their hamburgers, you definitely missed out!
Their three children - Rachel, Simone and Christopher - who were seven, five and three when the family arrived, still aren’t quite sure how their parents managed to wrangle three young children on top of a business that was open 15 hours a day, seven days a week. The workload, however, became a lot lighter once hot food was out of the picture when they cooked their last burger on 29th February, 2000.
The store has definitely been a family business, with all three children helping out as they grew up. You may remember their faces popping up from behind the counter from time to time, and they also spent many mornings helping with newspaper deliveries - even on Christmas Day, when presents weren’t opened until the deliveries had been made.
Stephen and Lynne also introduced post office boxes to the town, starting out with 52 in 1995, which has grown to over 420 today.

“We have made wonderful friends throughout our 25 years serving the community from behind the counter,” Stephen said - not to mention his 12 years as a member of the Upper Kiewa Valley Lions Club, and seven years on the Mount Beauty Golf Club Committee.
Although their children left home to study, Simone, along with her husband Wes, has returned to make their new home in Tawonga (much to the delight of her parents).
Something Stephen and Lynne have noticed during their 25 years is the increase in young families and retirees moving to the Upper Kiewa Valley.
“Why wouldn’t you?” Stephen said. “We have great schools, great services, and great people.”

Once again Wombats Ramble will be taken over by a bunch of speed demons flying around the GS Gates and obstacles set by our Falls Creek Race Department to decide who will be the fastest individual skier, boarder, and Rambler Team in Falls Creek!
The Night Rambler is Australia’s longest ski race under lights from the top of drovers to Slalom Plaza down the entire 3km of Wombats Ramble. Better start doing those squats because this is a real leg burner!
